【0003】
液晶表示装置に代表される非発光型の表示装置は、CRT(Cathode Ray Tube)、PDP(Plasma Display Panel)およびEL(Electro Luminescence)などの自発光型の表示装置とは異なり、自らは発光せずに、外部から照射された光の透過光量や反射光量を制御することによって文字や画像を表示する。
【0004】

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a light guide, an illumination device including the same, and a display device, and more particularly to a light guide suitably used for an illumination device (front light) included in a reflective liquid crystal display device, and the illumination device and display device including the light guide. About.
[0002]
[Prior art]
In recent years, liquid crystal displays (Liquid Crystal Display) have been made thin and have low power consumption, so they are OA devices such as word processors and personal computers, portable information devices such as electronic notebooks, or camera bodies equipped with a liquid crystal monitor. Widely used in VTR and the like.
[0003]
Unlike self-luminous display devices such as CRT (Cathode Ray Tube), PDP (Plasma Display Panel) and EL (Electro Luminescence), non-luminous display devices typified by liquid crystal display devices emit light themselves. Instead, characters and images are displayed by controlling the amount of transmitted light and the amount of reflected light emitted from the outside.
[0004]
The liquid crystal display devices described above are roughly classified into a transmission type and a reflection type.
[0005]
In a transmissive liquid crystal display device, display is performed by modulating illumination light from an illumination device (so-called backlight) disposed behind the liquid crystal display panel with a liquid crystal layer of the liquid crystal display panel.
[0006]
On the other hand, since the reflective liquid crystal display device performs display using ambient light (external light), it does not require a backlight, and thus has the advantages of light weight, thinness, and low power consumption. In a very bright usage environment, the visibility is not lowered and the image can be seen more clearly. However, the reflective liquid crystal display device has a problem that the brightness and contrast ratio of the display are greatly influenced by the usage environment such as the ambient brightness, and the visibility is extremely lowered particularly in a dark usage environment. Has the disadvantage of
[0007]
For this reason, some reflective liquid crystal display devices include an illuminating device for improving display quality when ambient light with sufficient intensity cannot be obtained, and this illuminating device is arranged on the front surface of the liquid crystal display panel. The illuminating device of the transmissive liquid crystal display device is called “backlight”, whereas it is called “front light”.
[0008]
A reflective liquid crystal display device having a front light is disclosed in, for example, Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 11-52375.
[0009]
In the reflection-type liquid crystal display device disclosed in the above-mentioned Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 11-52375, the light guide included in the front light has a strip-shaped step portion formed on the surface facing the emission surface from which light is emitted. The transmission axis of the polarizing plate disposed on the front surface of the liquid crystal display panel is disposed in parallel with the direction in which the band-shaped step portion extends. If the incident angle of the light incident on the stepped portion is close to the Brewster angle, the light reflected by the stepped portion and emitted to the liquid crystal display panel side has a lot of S-polarized light that vibrates in a direction parallel to the extending direction of the stepped portion. Including. In the reflection type liquid crystal display device disclosed in the above publication, the transmission axis of the polarizing plate is arranged in parallel with the extending direction of the stepped portion, so that the polarizing plate of light emitted from the light exit surface of the light guide is used. Absorption is suppressed, and light efficiently enters the liquid crystal layer of the liquid crystal display panel.
[0010]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
However, the inventor of the present application has found that the reflective liquid crystal display device disclosed in the above-mentioned JP-A-11-52375 has the following problems.
[0011]
By forming the step portion so that the incident angle of light to the step portion is near the Brewster angle, the light reflected by the step portion contains a lot of S-polarized light, but for the retardation of the light guide itself This light is disturbed in its polarization state before being emitted from the light guide. Therefore, even if the transmission axis of the polarizing plate is arranged in parallel with the direction in which the step portion extends, the absorption of light emitted from the light guide in the polarizing plate cannot actually be sufficiently suppressed. Usage efficiency cannot be improved sufficiently.
[0012]
In particular, when the step portion is formed integrally with the light guide by injection molding or the like, the light guide is parallel to the exit surface due to distortion during molding (for example, due to variations in the direction of resin flow during injection). Retardation has a relatively large value in a plane, and the value varies greatly in the plane. Further, the slow axis and the fast axis that the light guide has in a plane parallel to the exit surface also vary in the plane. For this reason, the light reflected by the stepped portion (the light containing a lot of S-polarized light) is greatly disturbed in the polarization state, so that the light absorption by the polarizing plate is not sufficiently suppressed, and the light use efficiency is lowered. Resulting in.

The present invention has been made in view of the above-described problems, and an object of the present invention is to provide a light guide having high light utilization efficiency, an illumination device including the light guide, and a display device.
[0018]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
A light guide according to the present invention includes a light guide having at least one side surface that receives light emitted from a light source, an emission surface that emits light incident from the at least one side surface, and a prism surface that faces the emission surface. An optical body, comprising a first light guide layer including the prism surface, and a second light guide layer facing the first light guide layer and including the exit surface, the second light guide The layer has a slow axis in a plane parallel to the exit surface, and the slow axis is substantially aligned in a plane parallel to the exit surface. The prism surface has a plurality of ridge lines extending substantially parallel to each other, and the slow axis of the second light guide layer is substantially parallel or substantially perpendicular to the plurality of ridge lines,This achieves the above object.
[0019]
The first light guide layer including the prism surface includes a prism sheet having a plurality of prisms formed on the prism surface side, and an adhesive layer provided on the second light guide layer side of the prism sheet. The second light guide layer is preferably a light guide plate bonded to the prism sheet via the adhesive layer.
[0020]
The thickness t of the first light guide layer1And the thickness t of the second light guide layer2And t1/ T2It is preferable to satisfy the relationship of ≦ 0.30.
[0021]
It is preferable that a reflection suppressing process for suppressing interface reflection on the emission surface is performed on the emission surface.
[0022]
An illumination device according to the present invention includes a light guide having the above-described configuration and at least one light source that emits light toward the at least one side surface of the light guide. Achieved.
[0023]
A display device according to the present invention includes an illumination device having the above-described configuration, and a display panel that is disposed on the emission surface side of the light guide with respect to the illumination device and modulates light emitted from the illumination device. This achieves the above objective.
[0024]
Hereinafter, the operation of the present invention will be described.
[0025]
In the light guide according to the present invention, the slow axes of the second light guide layer including the exit surface are substantially aligned in a plane parallel to the exit surface.Approximately parallel to or substantially perpendicular to each ridgeline constituting the prism surfaceThen, the second light guide layer hardly gives a phase difference to the light passing through the second light guide layer, and the light passing through the second light guide layer is suppressed from being disturbed in its polarization state. Therefore, the light reflected by the prism surface exits from the exit surface with almost no disturbance in its polarization state. Therefore, light absorption by the polarizing plate included in the display device is suppressed, so that light can be efficiently incident on the display device.
[0026]
The first light guide layer including the prism surface includes a prism sheet having a plurality of prisms formed on the prism surface side, and an adhesive layer provided on the second light guide layer side of the prism sheet. 2 When the configuration in which the light guide layer is a light guide plate bonded to the prism sheet via the adhesive layer is adopted, it is not necessary to make a special structure such as a prism in the light guide plate constituting the second light guide layer. . Therefore, it is easy to form the light guide plate by extrusion molding, and the retardation value of the second light guide layer in the plane parallel to the emission surface is set to 15 nm or less, or the slow axis of the second light guide layer is set to It is easy to substantially align them in a plane parallel to the exit surface. In addition, when such a configuration is adopted, when a defect occurs on the prism surface in the manufacturing process, it can be dealt with by replacing the prism sheet, so that the productivity of the light guide can be improved.
[0027]
The thickness t of the first light guide layer1And the thickness t of the second light guide layer2And t1/ T2If the relationship of ≦ 0.30 is satisfied, the amount of light incident on the first light guide layer from the incident surface is sufficiently smaller than the amount of light incident on the second light guide layer from the incident surface. Even when there is a difference in refractive index between the light layer and the second light guide layer, the occurrence of bright and dark stripes can be suppressed. From the point of view of displaying higher quality, t1/ T2More preferably, ≦ 0.25, t1/ T2More preferably, ≦ 0.10. t1/ T2The smaller the value of, the higher the effect of suppressing the occurrence of light and dark stripes.1/ T2If the value is less than 0.01, it may be difficult to produce the light guide. Therefore, considering the ease of production, the thickness t of the first
[0028]
When the reflection suppressing process for suppressing the interface reflection at the emission surface is performed on the emission surface, the interface reflection at the emission surface is suppressed, and the amount of light emitted from the emission surface can be increased. Therefore, when used for a lighting device of a display device, a bright display with a high contrast ratio is realized.
