BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a plasma addressed liquid crystal display device having a flat panel structure in which a display cell and a plasma cell are arranged to face each other.
[0002]
[Prior art]
The plasma addressed liquid crystal display device has a flat panel structure provided with display cells and plasma cells arranged opposite to each other on both sides of an intermediate sheet. A plasma addressed liquid crystal display device having such a structure is disclosed in, for example, Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 4-265931.

When a plasma discharge is generated in the discharge channel 9, the inside of the discharge channel 9 is filled with charged particles and becomes an anode potential almost uniformly, and one row of pixels is selected. That is, one discharge channel 9 corresponds to one scanning line and functions as a sampling switch. When an image signal (signal voltage) is applied to each signal electrode Y of the display cell 4 in a state where the sampling switch is turned on, the display cell 4 is sampled by the anode potential of the discharge channel 9 and each

[Problems to be solved by the invention]
In general, a display cell used in a plasma addressed liquid crystal display device encloses a liquid crystal that is an electro-optical material. When a direct current voltage is constantly applied to the liquid crystal, the quality characteristics of the liquid crystal are deteriorated. Therefore, the display cell is usually driven by an alternating voltage.
[0019]
The display cell 4 in which the
[0020]
However, such a simple frame inversion drive does not provide a complete AC drive due to a slight level shift of the image signal, asymmetry of the signal circuit, etc., and a frame in which a positive image signal is written. There is a difference in luminance of the entire screen between the frame in which the negative image signal is written. For this reason, luminance modulation occurs every frame period, and there is a possibility that the observer may recognize it as flicker (flickering of the screen).
[0021]
In order to avoid flicker synchronized with the frame period, so-called line inversion driving is employed.
[0022]
FIG. 8 is a schematic diagram for explaining this line inversion driving.
[0023]
According to this line inversion drive, in a certain frame, as shown in FIG. 8A, a positive-polarity image signal is written in odd-numbered lines and a negative-polarity image signal is written in even-numbered lines. In the display cell 4, in order to realize line inversion driving, it is necessary to invert the polarity of the image signal applied to each signal electrode Y at high speed every horizontal period (1H).
[0024]
In the next frame, as shown in FIG. 8B, a negative-polarity image signal is written in the odd-numbered lines, and a positive-polarity image signal is written in the even-numbered lines. Thereby, line inversion driving and frame inversion driving can be performed together.
[0025]
According to this driving method, the flickers appear because the polarity of each

Therefore, in the plasma addressed liquid
[0028]
In order to compensate for such a write loss, it is necessary to apply to the signal electrode Y at a voltage higher than the signal voltage to be originally written. Furthermore, if there is a variation in the disappearance time of charged particles between the lines, local display unevenness appears as the entire screen, and the image quality is deteriorated.
[0029]
The problem is that the discharge channel 9 is applied with an image signal having an opposite polarity for each one or a plurality of adjacent signal electrodes Y, and the polarity of the image signal applied to each signal electrode Y is inverted every frame period. This can be solved by using a driving method. In this driving method, since the polarity of the image signal is inverted for each signal electrode arranged in a column, this driving method is hereinafter referred to as column inversion driving.
[0030]
Unlike the normal line inversion drive, the column inversion drive does not invert the polarity of the image signal every horizontal period of the discharge channel 9, so that even if the charge particle extinction time is long, the image signal of the opposite polarity is overwritten. There is no fear of the occurrence of such a large write loss. In general, image signals adjacent to each other have almost the same signal voltage level due to the continuity of the image, and if the same polarity is used, a large write loss does not occur. Therefore, the influence of the time constant of the switch characteristics due to plasma discharge is not affected. It is possible to make it difficult to receive. In the column inversion driving, the polarity of the image signal is inverted for each column. Therefore, when viewed as the whole image, the luminance deviation due to the difference in polarity is averaged, and the variation in luminance is suppressed. Therefore, when the column inversion drive and the frame inversion drive are combined, almost no flicker occurs. Therefore, by performing both the column inversion drive and the frame inversion drive, the display cell 4 using the
[0031]
However, in the column inversion driving, a very large potential difference is generated between the signal electrodes Y whose polarity is inverted, so that a so-called crosstalk phenomenon peculiar to the plasma addressed liquid crystal display device is remarkably observed. For this reason, when performing column inversion driving, the crosstalk phenomenon is prevented by increasing the width of the black matrix between the
[0032]
The present invention has been made in order to solve the above-described problem. When the column inversion driving and the frame inversion driving are performed together, the display brightness of the image is reduced by reducing the aperture ratio of the display cell. An object of the present invention is to provide a plasma addressed liquid crystal display device capable of preventing the crosstalk phenomenon without lowering.
[0033]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to solve the above problems, a plasma addressed liquid crystal display device according to the present invention includes a plurality of signal electrodes each along the column direction. And a liquid crystal layer provided opposite to the plurality of signal electrodes; Display cells with a plurality of each along the row direction Discharge channels and a pair of discharge electrodes provided in each of the discharge channels A plasma cell having Through the intermediate sheet Mutually joined Cage The plasma cell In the above each A pair of in the discharge channel Apply discharge pulses sequentially to the discharge electrodes, In each discharge channel Generates plasma discharge and applies image signal with reversed polarity for each of multiple adjacent signal electrodes The column inversion driving and the frame inversion driving for inverting the polarity of the image signal applied to each signal electrode for each frame are performed together. In the plasma addressed liquid crystal display device, The plurality of signal electrodes to which image signals having the same polarity are applied in the column inversion drive are arranged with a spacing T1 ′ between them, and the spacing T2 ′ between the signal electrodes whose polarities are reversed is the same. The interval between the plurality of signal electrodes to which the polar image signal is applied is wider than the interval T1 ′, and is opposed to the intervals T1 ′ and T2 ′, and has the same width as the intervals T1 ′ and T2 ′. A black matrix is provided so that .

The image signal with the polarity reversed is preferably applied to every three adjacent signal electrodes.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
Hereinafter, a plasma addressed liquid crystal display device according to the present invention will be described with reference to the drawings.
[0036]
The plasma addressed liquid crystal display device of the present embodiment has substantially the same configuration as the conventional plasma addressed liquid
[0037]
Each plasma cell 3 has a plurality of discharge channels 9 each along the row direction. A pair of

The operation for performing both the column inversion driving and the frame inversion driving will be specifically described with reference to FIG.

[0048]
The plasma addressed liquid crystal display device according to the present embodiment employs column inversion driving in which image signals having opposite polarities are applied to each of the three signal electrodes Y. However, the difference in luminance due to the difference in polarity is spatially distributed over the entire screen. However, instead of this configuration, a configuration may be adopted in which the driving is inverted every two signal electrodes Y or every four or more signal electrodes Y.
[0049]
However, when displaying a color image, the RGB three
[0050]
In general, in the plasma addressed liquid crystal display device, most of the image signal voltage applied to the signal electrode is consumed by the intermediate sheet, and the image signal voltage applied to the liquid crystal layer is close to 1/10 of the original voltage. It is known that it will decline. For this reason, the image signal voltage applied to the signal electrode is about 60V to 80V at the maximum. Therefore, the maximum potential difference between adjacent signal electrodes is a signal in which a positive image signal is applied between signal electrodes in which the polarity of the image signal is inverted, assuming that the image signal voltage applied to each signal electrode is 60 to 80 V. Since +60 to +80 V is applied to the electrode, and −60 to −80 V is applied to the signal electrode to which the negative image signal is applied, an extremely high voltage of 120 to 160 V is provided between both signal electrodes. A large potential difference will occur. For this reason, a large crosstalk phenomenon occurs between the signal electrodes whose polarities are inverted. Therefore, in order to prevent this crosstalk phenomenon, it is necessary to increase the width of the black matrix.
[0051]
Therefore, in the column inversion driving in which the polarity is inverted for each signal electrode, it is necessary to increase the width of all the black matrices, and the aperture ratio of the display cell is lowered.
[0052]
On the other hand, an image signal is applied to the signal electrodes by column inversion driving that performs polarity inversion for each plurality, and the width of the black matrix between the signal electrodes for polarity inversion is wider than the width of the black matrix in other portions. Thus, the demerit that the aperture ratio of the display cell is reduced can be eliminated.
[0053]
FIG. 4A is a waveform diagram for explaining the operation of the plasma addressed liquid crystal display device of the present embodiment.
[0054]
A signal waveform C shown in FIG. 4A represents an image signal applied to three signal electrodes (
[0055]
Therefore, positive polarity data D1, D2, and D3 are applied to the signal waveform C over
[0056]
On the other hand, the signal waveform L shown in FIG. 4B is applied to three signal electrodes (
[0057]
Thus, the polarity inversion of the signal waveform C shown in FIG. 4A is for each frame, whereas the polarity inversion of the signal waveform L shown in FIG. 4B is for each line. Since the signal waveform C shown in FIG. 4A is slower in polarity switching than the signal waveform L shown in FIG. 4B, the power consumption of the signal circuit can be reduced accordingly.
[0058]
A
[0059]
Even after the voltage pulse P1 is released, the charged particles generated by the plasma discharge in the discharge channel 9 remain, so that the plasma switch is not completely shut off. A curve indicated by W <b> 1 in FIG. 4C represents the disappearance process of charged particles generated by the plasma discharge of the discharge channel 9. This curve W1 represents a case where the decay is long, and the time assigned to the line 2 is extended beyond the time assigned to the
[0060]
On the other hand, in the column inversion driving shown in FIG. 4A, after the positive polarity image data D1 is written in the
[0061]
Next, the voltage waveform 2 is applied to the cathode K2 of the line 2 as shown in FIG. That is, a pulse P2 of about minus several hundred volts is applied to the cathode K2, and plasma discharge of the discharge channel 9 of the line 2 is generated. The decay of the charged particles generated thereby is represented by the curve W2. The decay of the disappearance of charged particles varies between the lines, and FIG. 4D shows the case where the curve W2 is shorter than the curve W1. That is, in the line 2, the plasma discharge of the discharge channel 9 is completed within the assigned horizontal period, and the normal image signal D2 can be written in any of the line inversion driving and the column inversion driving.
[0062]
Thus, if there is a variation in the decay of the disappearance of charged particles between the lines, display unevenness occurs depending on whether or not there is overwriting. It can be seen that in the line inversion drive, this display unevenness appears remarkably, whereas in the column inversion drive, it is hardly affected.
[0063]
As described above, according to the plasma addressed liquid crystal display device of the present embodiment, the image signal voltage is applied to the signal electrodes Y0 to Ym by column inversion driving. Even when the decay time is long, the voltage loss of the image signal written in each
[0064]
In the column inversion driving having the above advantages, since the potential difference between the signal electrodes to which the image signals of different polarities are applied becomes large, the occurrence of the crosstalk phenomenon is remarkable, but the plasma addressed liquid crystal display of the present embodiment In the apparatus, the black matrix formed between the signal electrodes where the image signal is inverted is made wider than the black matrix of other portions, so that the crosstalk phenomenon can be prevented. In addition, since the black matrix width is not increased with respect to the black matrix between all the signal electrodes, it is possible to suppress a decrease in the aperture ratio of the display cell due to the increase in the black matrix width, and display a bright image on the display panel. Can be provided.
[0065]
【The invention's effect】
As described above, according to the present invention, the width of the black matrix that shields light between the plurality of signal electrodes to which the image signal with reversed polarity is applied is the width of the black matrix formed between the other signal electrodes. Therefore, the crosstalk phenomenon can be prevented. In addition, since the width of the black matrix is not increased with respect to the black matrix between all the signal electrodes, it is possible to suppress a decrease in the aperture ratio of the display cell caused by increasing the black matrix width. A bright image display can be provided on the panel.
