BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an optical signal transmission device that transmits and receives an optical signal through an optical transmission medium, and a signal processing device that performs signal processing including transmission and reception of a plurality of different optical signals.
[0002]
[Prior art]
In recent years, the data processing speed of an LSI has been dramatically increased due to the improvement in the degree of integration of a semiconductor integrated circuit (LSI). Along with this, improvement in signal transmission capability is required for a wiring board on which a semiconductor integrated circuit is mounted. In general, as a signal transmission means within an information apparatus or between information apparatuses, a parallel architecture configuration using a bus having a plurality of channels is generally used. In recent years, ALUs, registers, timers / timers are also used in personal computers and workstations. In general, many functional blocks such as a counter, a ROM, and a RAM are combined using a bus of 16 to 64 channels. However, in the parallel architecture, a large number of connection connectors and wirings are required, so that the circuit scale becomes large and the transmission capability of the bus is limited accordingly. Therefore, further parallelization has been promoted by multilayering and miniaturization of wiring, thereby improving the transmission capability of the bus.
[0003]
Various parallel processing apparatuses that operate a plurality of processors (CPUs) in parallel to perform high-speed arithmetic processing have been proposed. For example, there has been proposed a parallel processing device that employs a system in which a memory group connected to a shared bus system is shared by a plurality of CPUs also connected to the shared bus system. In this shared bus system, a shared bus, an arbiter circuit that grants access by arbitrating an access request to the shared bus output from a device connected to the shared bus, and a memory group (shared memory) It includes a device for inputting and outputting data as appropriate. In such a type of parallel processing device having a shared memory connected to a shared bus system, a large number of read cycles and write cycles from a plurality of CPUs may compete in a complicated manner on the shared bus system. In order to mediate access contention due to a large number of read cycles and write cycles, useless time is generated on the shared bus system side, and throughput is reduced accordingly. In conjunction with this, there is a problem that the waiting time on the CPU side becomes longer and the overhead of the entire processing system increases. In view of this, several methods for efficiently using the CPU by reducing the idle time of the bus cycle have been proposed. For example, Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 9-62640 discloses that a CPU that has attempted to access a shared memory that has already been accessed by another CPU accesses another non-shared memory until the access to the shared memory is completed. It has been proposed to reduce the idle state of the CPU. Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 8-339353 discloses that a plurality of common buses are connected to a shared memory via a plurality of buffers, and the CPU accesses a free buffer, and the buffer accesses the shared memory. Thus, a technique that prevents the CPU itself from waiting for access to the shared memory has been proposed.
[0004]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
However, in the parallel architecture using a bus having a plurality of channels as described above, it is reaching the limit to further improve the bus transmission capability due to signal delay and transmission waveform distortion caused by inter-wire capacitance and wiring resistance. is there. In addition, electromagnetic noise (EMI: Electromagnetic Interference) becomes a serious problem due to the improvement of the operation speed. On the other hand, even in a parallel processing device that operates a plurality of CPUs in parallel, when configured using one electric bus, only a pair of devices can perform data transmission within a certain period of time. Even if a method such as time division is used, the speeding up of data processing is limited due to the limitations of electrical transmission caused by the inter-wiring capacitance and wiring resistance described above.
[0005]
Therefore, use of an in-system optical connection technique called optical interconnection has been studied. The outline of the optical interconnection technology is described in “Koji Uchida, 9th Circuit Packaging Conference, 15C01, pp. 201-202 "and" H. Tomimura, et al. "Packaging Technology for Optical Interconnects", IEEE Tokyo, No. 33, pp. 81-86, 1994 ", Osamu Wada, Electronics April 1993, pp. 52-55 ”, various forms have been proposed depending on the contents of the system configuration. In this optical interconnection technology, a method of multiplexing data using a bus system using optical signals and realizing high-speed processing by high-speed access can be considered. A wavelength multiplexing method is known for optical multiplexing. For example, as disclosed in Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 9-98137, if a plurality of signal transmission wavelengths are changed and sent, multiplex communication can be performed on one transmission path. However, in wavelength division multiplexing communication, a device for receiving and transmitting a plurality of wavelengths, specifically, a plurality of transmitting elements and a plurality of wavelength filters that pass a specific wavelength are prepared, or these elements are made variable in wavelength. It is necessary to make it a thing, and the size of an apparatus will become large. Further, the cost increases by increasing the accuracy of the wavelength or suppressing variations in output intensity between different wavelengths. As the number of CPUs increases and the number of required wavelengths increases, the increase in cost becomes more remarkable.
[0006]
The present invention has been made in order to solve the above-described problems, and an optical signal transmission in which an idle time of a CPU among a plurality of terminals (devices, circuit boards, etc.) is reduced and an increase in cost is prevented. An object is to provide an apparatus and a signal processing apparatus.

Here, the case where data is written from the CPU 60_2 to the memory 70_3 at the same time as the data writing from the CPU 60_1 to the memory 70_1 is described. When converting the electrical signal received from the CPU 60_2 into a drive signal, the signal conversion circuit 41_2 refers to the light intensity level identification signal sent from the signal conversion circuit 41_1 on the CPU 60_1 side, and already performs another communication (here, the CPU 60_1). And a communication signal between the memory 70_1 and the
[0032]
Here, as described above, there are eight combinations (see FIG. 2) of combined signal intensities determined by turning on and off the three types of optical signals from the CPUs 60_1, 60_2, and 60_3, and the intensity ratio of the optical signals is, for example, By setting the ratio to 1: 2: 4, the sum of all combinations (the value of the combined signal) is uniquely determined without overlapping. Therefore, it is possible to uniquely recognize the signals output from the respective emission units of the
[0033]
Next, a case where the CPU reads data from the memory will be described. For example, when the CPU 60_1 reads out data written in the memory 70_3, the signal conversion circuit 41_1 on the CPU 60_1 side sends an address signal to the signal conversion circuit 41_6 on the memory 70_3 side via the address /
[0034]
Further, when a plurality of communications are performed between the CPU and the memory, an identification signal having a light intensity level to be used is sent to another signal conversion circuit so as to avoid using a signal having the same light intensity level in advance. . In this way, at the same time that a certain CPU reads data from a certain memory, another CPU can send the data to the other memory, and thus simultaneous bidirectional communication is realized.
[0035]
In the optical signal transmission apparatus according to the present embodiment, the example of communication between the CPU and the memory has been described. However, communication may be performed using a part of the memory replaced with another input / output device. In general, n kinds of light intensity levels are not necessarily required for n CPUs, and it is possible to communicate with m kinds of intensity levels which are smaller than n kinds of light intensity levels. In addition, the power consumed to generate a high light intensity level is large, but with this method, it can always be used in order from the lowest intensity level, so it is also effective for low power consumption.
[0036]
Furthermore, since the signal conversion circuit, the light emitting element, and the light receiving element in the optical signal transmission device of the present embodiment can realize modulation of light intensity by adjusting the driving voltage, for example, wavelength multiplexing communication that changes the wavelength of the optical signal is used. Compared with the signal processing apparatus, it can be configured more simply and cost increase can be suppressed.
In the optical signal transmission device of this embodiment, the intensity levels of the optical signals input and output on the CPU 60_1, 60_2, 60_3 side and the memories 70_1, 70_2, 70_3 side of the
[0037]
As described above, in the optical signal transmission device according to the present embodiment, different types of optical signals can be sent simultaneously in the same direction or in both directions in the communication between the CPU and the memory. The idle time is greatly reduced. Therefore, it is possible to provide an optical signal transmission device with high CPU utilization efficiency.
