Coded excitation systems for improving the penetration of real-time phased-array imaging systems" (IEEE Transactions UFFC, Vol.39,No.3,May 1992)において、発表されている。
【0006】
Depth-Dependent Mismatched Filtering Using Ultrasonic Attenuation as a Filter Design Parameter", proceedings of the IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium, 1998.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an ultrasonic diagnostic apparatus, and more particularly to a pulse compression technique.
[0002]
[Prior art and problems]
In ultrasonic diagnosis, an ultrasonic pulse is first transmitted to a medium to be inspected, for example, a certain region in the human body, and then reflected by a number of discontinuous parts of the medium. The transmitted ultrasonic echo (reflected wave) is converted into an electric signal (received signal). The received signal is subjected to various processes such as amplification, filtering, beam forming, and detection, and finally converted into a set of digital values (pixel values) (that is, an ultrasonic image). The ultrasound image can be displayed on an electronic display such as a cathode ray tube (CRT), or a photograph can be generated from the ultrasound image. One problem with ultrasound diagnostics (and other coherent imaging systems) is electrical noise. If the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is low, the noise may completely or partially cover a significant signal (especially in the deep part of an ultrasound image). Thus, manufacturers are striving to design low noise systems, but there is some thermal noise in any system. Therefore, it is desirable to enhance the signal in order to improve SNR while reducing the noise level. In short, this is achieved by increasing the transmission energy.
[0003]
Increasing the signal amplitude and / or duration increases the transmission energy. However, there is a limit to the extent to which the signal amplitude can be increased. For example, in radar, there is a practical limit on the maximum amplitude. In the field of medical ultrasonic waves, there is a possibility that the sound pressure with high amplitude may cause damage to the living tissue. Therefore, in order to increase the signal energy without increasing the amplitude, it is necessary to transmit a waveform having a long lifetime. When this long-time waveform is a simple sinusoidal burst, the bandwidth of the signal is reduced as compared with a short pulse signal, and the resolution in the distance direction is deteriorated. Therefore, it is necessary to frequency modulate the transmitted signal so that the bandwidth of the long-time waveform signal is maintained equal to or greater than the bandwidth of the conventional short pulse signal. This modulated transmission wave is referred to as “encoded waveform (encoded waveform)”. Roughly speaking, this is equivalent to transmitting a different instantaneous frequency for each transmission period.
[0004]
When the transmitted signal is an encoded waveform, the received echo signal is processed by the “pulse compression filter”. The pulse compression filter gives different phase delays for each frequency component, and adds the phases of all frequency components so as to increase the amplitude. This produces a short and high amplitude “compressed” pulse.
[0005]
Methods using encoded waveforms are well known and are described in numerous communication theories and radar textbooks. For example, it is described in "Radar Principles" by Peyton Z. Peebles Junior, John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 1998. Specific methods of applying this method to medical ultrasound are described, for example, by M. O'Donnell in "Coded excitation systems for improving the penetration of real-time phased-array imaging systems" (IEEE Transactions UFFC, Vol.39, No.3, May 1992).
[0006]
A first problem in the case of implementing a method using an encoded waveform is the cost of the pulse compression filter. Considering the application of the method to high performance devices, the pulse compression filter is implemented as a digital FIR (finite impulse response) filter, but the cost of this pulse compression filter is the number of filter taps (ie, the impulse of the filter). Increase with the number of samples in the response). The number of filter taps is defined by the product of the effective time of the filter and the sampling rate, and exceeds 512 taps in the field of medical ultrasound. When long data strings must be filtered in real time, one filter is required for each filter tap, which increases the circuit scale of the pulse compression filter and its cost is very high. Become.
[0007]
It is known that it is more efficient to perform convolution operations in the frequency domain for filtering long data strings. That is, first, a fast Fourier transform (FFT) is performed on the data, the transformed data is multiplied by a filter frequency characteristic, and the result is subjected to inverse Fourier transform (IFFT), whereby a filtered time domain signal is obtained. can get. Although the calculation amount is reduced by this method, it is still very difficult to realize the processing at a satisfactory data processing speed.
[0008]
As a method of reducing the amount of calculation, a method of executing an FFT operation on two sets of data in parallel can be considered. That is, certain data is supplied to the real part input of the FFT calculator, and another data is supplied to the imaginary part input of the FFT calculator. Separate the two signals (real part signal and imaginary part signal) output from the FFT computing unit, and individually convert the separated signal from the time domain filter characteristics to the frequency domain. Multiplication is performed, and furthermore, they are individually inverse Fourier transformed. According to this method, the total calculation amount is reduced by more than 20%, but it cannot be said that the improvement is so great.
[0009]
Incidentally, in another method for reducing the amount of calculation required for pulse compression for an encoded waveform having an RF frequency, the RF signal is demodulated to baseband, whereas data thinning processing is performed prior to pulse compression. The Thereby, the sampling rate is reduced. However, in the field of medical ultrasound technology where the effective bandwidth exceeds 50% of the center frequency, there is very little, if any, computational complexity reduction by this method. Moreover, since it is more difficult to design an appropriate pulse compression filter, the resolution in the distance direction may be inferior. Therefore, it is desired to reduce the amount of calculation required for pulse compression of the encoded waveform.
[0010]
A second problem with coded waveform systems is due to non-linearities in the transmit and receive circuits and media, in particular due to signal distortions caused by frequency dependent attenuation in the media. The pulse compression filter is designed for a specific theoretical waveform shape, and its performance is degraded when a distorted waveform is processed. Therefore, a simple method for compensating for such waveform distortion is desired.
[0011]
An object of the present invention is to increase the signal-to-noise ratio at a low cost.
[0012]
Another object of the present invention is to improve the image quality of an ultrasonic image from a shallow part to a deep part.
[0013]
Another object of the present invention is to exhibit the advantages of both non-encoded transmission and encoded transmission.
[0014]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
(1) In the present invention, a transmission pulse is encoded (including frequency modulation), and a convolution operation in a frequency domain is performed on a received signal obtained by receiving a reflected wave, that is, pulse compression is performed. Applied. Then, the signal after pulse compression is returned to the received signal in the time domain. If necessary, an ultrasonic image is formed based on the received signal after pulse compression.
[0015]
Desirably, an RF reception signal before detection (envelope detection or quadrature detection) is input to the pulse compression filter. Preferably, the pulse compression filter includes a complex FFT calculator, a complex multiplier, and a complex IFFT calculator. Two RF reception signals (two real signals) are input to the complex FFT calculator, that is, the two real signals are combined (packed) into one complex signal, and the complex FFT calculator is then input to the complex FFT calculator. Entered. Then, the complex signal as a result of the complex FFT operation is input to the complex multiplier, where filtering (pulse compression) is performed on the complex signal in the frequency domain. The complex signal after filtering is input to the complex IFFT circuit, where separation processing (unpacking) is performed on the complex signal, and two filtered real signals are output. The frequency characteristics of the filter are designed to correspond to the actual impulse response in the time domain in order to realize pulse compression in the frequency domain. According to the above configuration, since the filtering can be performed in the packing state in the frequency domain, the calculation amount can be halved. The packing circuit and the unpacking circuit are provided in the input stage and the output stage of the pulse compression filter as necessary.
[0016]
In the present invention, preferably, a plurality of zones (units of filtering processing) are set in the depth direction, and a filter frequency characteristic is adaptively selected for each zone. For example, the deeper the reflected wave, the larger the distortion amount tends to be. However, according to the above configuration, the filtering can be performed in consideration of the reflected wave distortion amount. If each zone is partially overlapped, a more natural ultrasonic image can be constructed.
[0017]
In the present invention, preferably, unencoded transmission and encoded transmission are performed in combination. In processing the received signal, pulse compression processing is performed on the received signal corresponding to the encoded transmission. According to this configuration, the advantages of both non-encoded transmission and encoded transmission can be enjoyed.
[0018]
(2)PreferablyIn an ultrasonic diagnostic apparatus that performs pulse compression on a real signal obtained by transmitting an ultrasonic wave and receiving a reflected wave, the first real signal is a real part and the second real signal is an imaginary part. Means for constructing a first complex signal; means for transforming the first complex signal from the time domain to the frequency domain, thereby generating a frequency spectrum of the first complex signal; and Means for multiplying the frequency spectrum by a first filter frequency characteristic and thereby generating a frequency spectrum of the filtered first complex signal; and the frequency spectrum of the filtered first complex signal in the frequency domain. From the time domain to the time domain, so that the filtered first real signal is the real part and the filtered second real signal is the imaginary part Means for generating a first complex signal, the freeMu
[0019]
According to the above configuration, the first and second real signals (preferably, the first and second RF reception signals) are configured (packed) as the first complex signal, and the first complex signal has the frequency. It is converted into a spectrum (a signal representing the component amount for each frequency). Then, filtering, that is, pulse compression, is performed on the frequency spectrum in the frequency domain. Then, the filtered frequency spectrum is converted into the time domain, thereby generating a first complex signal after pulse compression. Furthermore, the first and second real signals constituting the first complex signal after pulse compression are separated as necessary (unpacking). Therefore, there is an advantage that the amount of calculation can be greatly reduced as compared with the prior art by performing pulse compression processing collectively on a set of packed real signals in the frequency domain. For the same reason, since two real signals can be processed in parallel or collectively, real-time performance can be improved. Note that the first and second real signals are obtained on the same beam direction or on different beam directions.
[0020]
Preferably, means for selecting the first filter frequency characteristic from a plurality of filter frequency characteristics is included. For example, if the filter frequency characteristics are switched according to the depth of each zone that defines the processing range in the depth direction, the image quality of the entire ultrasound image can be improved.

Means for generating a filtered second complex signal having the fourth real signal as an imaginary part.

According to the above configuration, two processing units (each processing unit includes a means for forming a complex signal, a means for generating a frequency spectrum, and a means for filtering) are provided in parallel. Signals can be processed in parallel. That is, four real signals can be processed in parallel or with a time difference. Of course, it can also be designed so that more real signals are processed in parallel.

The fast Fourier transformer may be referred to as a complex FFT calculator, and the inverse fast Fourier transformer may be referred to as a complex IFFT calculator.
[0027]
Preferably, a plurality of filter frequency characteristics are stored, and when the first filter frequency characteristic is selected from among the plurality of filter frequency characteristics, the selected first filter frequency characteristic is supplied to the first complex multiplier. Including equipment. Each filter frequency characteristic is preferably configured as a complex filter coefficient sequence, which is stored in the memory device and selectively used as necessary.
[0028]
Preferably, a first processing unit including the first fast Fourier transformer, the first complex multiplier, and the first inverse fast Fourier transformer is included.
[0029]
Preferably, the second processing unit includes means for alternately supplying a complex signal to the first processing unit and the second processing unit, and the second processing unit includes a third actual unit. A second fast Fourier transform that transforms a second complex signal having a real part of the signal and an imaginary part of the fourth real signal from the time domain to the frequency domain, thereby generating a frequency spectrum of the second complex signal A second complex multiplier that multiplies the frequency spectrum of the second complex signal by a second filter frequency characteristic to generate a frequency spectrum of the filtered second complex signal, and the filtering Transforming the frequency spectrum of the second complex signal that has been filtered from the frequency domain to the time domain, so that the filtered third real signal is the real part and the filtered fourth real signal is the imaginary part, fill Comprising a second inverse fast Fourier transformer for generating a second complex signal which is a ring, a.

[0031]
Preferably, it includes an output buffer that inputs the filtered first complex signal and outputs the filtered first real signal and the filtered second real signal in series. The output buffer separates (unpacks) the first real signal and the second real signal that constitute the filtered second complex signal. Preferably, the pulse compression filter is configured according to at least one of a superposition addition filter method and a superposition hold filter method. Both methods are related to processing of overlapping portions of signals between adjacent zones, and both methods are known per se. It is desirable to design the filter frequency characteristics in consideration of such overlap, that is, in consideration of weighting between zones (similarly, weighting according to a window function).

Preferably, the transmission signal is an encoded waveform. Preferably, the transmission signal is configured according to one of a linear chirp scheme and a Barker code scheme. The former uses frequency modulation, and the latter uses a transmission code.
[0037]
Preferably, the transmission signal includes an uncoded waveform and a coded waveform. According to the former, since the number of waves constituting the pulse is small, the reception blank period from the start of transmission to the start of reception can be reduced, and the convergence in the azimuth direction can be improved upon the transmission focus. On the other hand, according to the latter, SNR can be improved. Therefore, it is desirable to use them in combination according to various conditions.

And means for inputting the received signal and distributing the received signal in time series order, and comprising preprocessing for forming a complex signal having the first received signal as a real part and the second received signal as an imaginary part Means for converting the complex signal from the time domain to the frequency domain to generate a frequency spectrum of the complex signal, wherein the real part input to which the first received signal is input, and the second received signal are Complex Fourier transform means having an imaginary part input, a real part output from which a real part signal representing the frequency spectrum is output, and an imaginary part output from which an imaginary part signal representing the frequency spectrum is output; Of the complex signal A first multiplier for outputting a filtered real part signal by multiplying a real part signal representing a wave number spectrum by a filter frequency characteristic for pulse compression; and an imaginary part signal representing a frequency spectrum of the complex signal. [0041]
The pre-processing means corresponds to a packing processing means, and the post-processing means corresponds to an unpacking processing means.

According to the above configuration, transmission of non-encoded transmission pulses (normal transmission) and transmission of encoded transmission pulses (encoded transmission) are executed according to a predetermined sequence. In this case, for example, in the short distance zone, it is desirable to perform normal transmission from the viewpoint of reducing the reception blank period. For long distance (or medium and long distance) zones, it is desirable to perform coded transmission in order to improve sensitivity. In that case, for example, it is desirable to set a plurality of sub-zones for the long-distance zone and to switch the filter frequency characteristics for each sub-zone according to the depth. In the above configuration, it is desirable to pack two received signals into a complex signal and perform pulse compression on the complex signal in the frequency domain. However, pulse compression processing other than such processing is performed. You may do it. In other words, the above configuration is characterized by a combination of normal transmission and encoded transmission.

Preferably, a plurality of zones are set in the depth direction, an ultrasonic pulse is transmitted for each zone, and transmission of the non-encoded pulse or transmission of the encoded pulse is performed according to the depth of the zone. Is selected. Preferably, the ultrasonic image is a two-dimensional tomographic image or a two-dimensional Doppler image.

Further, the two real signals constituting the complex signal are acquired sequentially on the same beam, or acquired sequentially or simultaneously on different beams.
[0057]
Because of the linearity of the convolution operation, when the complex signal is filtered by a filter with a pure real impulse response, the real and imaginary parts of the complex signal are filtered separately without interaction. Using this property, it is possible to process two real signals in parallel.

When processing an RF signal in a plurality of segments, a known filtering technique “overlap-add” or preferably “overlap-save” can be applied. According to the latter superposition hold method, the input segments partially overlap (the length of the overlap is equal to the length of the impulse response minus 1). Such duplication can be realized using the
[0080]
In ultrasound diagnostics, ultrasound undergoes frequency dependent attenuation as it propagates through the medium. Attenuation increases as the signal propagates, and each frequency component is attenuated separately. Due to this phenomenon, the spectrum of the echo differs at different depths. For this reason, in the pulse compression, it is necessary to use a plurality of filter frequency characteristics corresponding to each depth. That is, a pulse compression filter whose characteristics are variable depending on the depth is required.
[0081]
In order to implement a variable depth pulse compression filter, a superposition pending filter technique is used. In this technique, a segment size is selected that corresponds to a relatively small range where the signal is not significantly deformed by attenuation. For example, for medical ultrasound for a center frequency of 3.75 MHz, an RF sampling frequency of 15 MHz, and a filter impulse response of 513 taps, a segment size of 1024 samples is selected. Considering that two segments are processed in parallel by the method of this embodiment, the segment size covers a range of 0.5 × (1024 ÷ 15 MHz) × 1.54 mm / μs = 52.56 mm. There are 1024 filtering samples. Different filter characteristics may be used for each of the 52.56 mm segments. The filter
[0082]
Appropriate filter frequency characteristics for each depth segment are described in K.A. From RF signals from each beam or group of beams, as described in Eck and co-author "Depth-Dependent Mismatched Filtering Using Ultrasonic Attenuation as a Filter Design Parameter", proceedings of the IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium, 1998. That is, it can be calculated adaptively from the signal itself. However, a more preferable method is a method of measuring a spectrum of an echo from a phantom having an attenuation characteristic close to the attenuation characteristic of the tissue, and calculating a filter frequency characteristic at each depth in advance.
[0083]
The phantom used for the preliminary calculation of the filter characteristics is composed of a plurality of strong reflectors (metal or nylon threads) arranged in a uniform medium with low reflection intensity, for example one at a target depth for every 2 cm depth. ). With such a phantom, the attenuated signal can be measured directly. This is because the attenuated echo signal is completely generated (except for some additive noise) from one strong reflector. In order to reduce noise, echoes from each reflector are repeatedly measured, and a plurality of measured values are averaged. This can improve the signal to noise ratio in proportion to the square root of the number of measurements. This is possible using a stationary phantom that can perform measurements as many times as desired under the same conditions. If a reliable signal estimate is obtained, the filter frequency characteristics of the
[0084]
Calculation of the frequency characteristics of the filter is best performed off-line, but the selection of an appropriate filter during actual operation may be a fixed method based solely on the depth of the filtered signal segment, It may be an adaptive method using a simplified real-time attenuation estimate for. Such fixed or adaptive methods for selecting an appropriate filter during the execution of a pulse compression filter are known techniques.
