BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a liquid crystal display device for displaying video and text information. In placeIt is related.
[0002]
[Prior art]
Liquid crystal display devices are widely used as flat displays such as flat-screen TVs, car navigation systems, personal computers, and word processors because of their thin and light features.
A number of display modes, each with its own characteristics, have been proposed for liquid crystal displays. Among them, the Pi cell (Pi cell or π cell) disclosed in US Pat. No. 4,566,758 is attracting attention as a display for moving images because of its high switching speed of about 2 msec. is there.
[0003]
In this pi-cell, the liquid crystal molecules are bend-aligned, and display is performed by changing the amount of transmitted light by controlling the equivalent retardation from the normal direction by the magnitude of the applied voltage.
Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 7-49509 discloses a technique for adding a member that generates a fixed negative phase difference to the pi-cell to reduce the operating voltage or expand the viewing angle characteristics. As a result, the drive voltage is reduced to 5 volts or less, and the viewing angle range in consideration of contrast inversion in gradation display is expanded as compared with the case without the phase plate. However, since the viewing angle dependence of the black display characteristics is still large, black floating occurs in the display as the tilt angle from the normal direction increases. As a member that generates a negative phase difference, a method such as making a positive birefringent medium orthogonal to the optical axis of the pi-cell, or arranging a negative birefringent medium parallel to the optical axis of the pi-cell, can be considered. Details are not disclosed in the patent.
[0004]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
However, with the above configuration, the viewing angle characteristics are still insufficient, and the black display characteristics are particularly dependent on the viewing angle. Therefore, when the display is viewed from a direction away from the front, the transmittance in the black display state is high. Increase greatly. For this reason, when the display is viewed from a direction deviating from the front, black floating occurs, and there is a problem that the display becomes whitish and the hue becomes extremely light or the contrast is greatly reduced.
[0005]
In addition, the alignment state of the liquid crystal layer before voltage application is splay alignment. Actually, it is not easy to perform bend alignment from this state, and in order to promote the alignment transition from splay to bend, the display is changed to black and white. There is a problem that a voltage much higher than the operating voltage to be applied needs to be applied.
Accordingly, an object of the present invention is to provide a liquid crystal display device capable of improving viewing angle characteristics.PlaceIs to provide.
[0008]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
Claim1The liquid crystal display device described above includes a liquid crystal layer in which liquid crystal molecules having a positive refractive index anisotropy and a positive dielectric anisotropy are bend-aligned during operation, and a negative refractive index in which the principal axis is bend-aligned. It has a phase plate made of an optical medium having anisotropy and means for applying a voltage to the liquid crystal layer, and the product of the refractive index anisotropy of the liquid crystal and the thickness of the liquid crystal layer is 790 nm to 1190 nm. is there.
[0009]
In this way, an optical medium having a negative refractive index anisotropy in which a liquid crystal layer having a positive refractive index anisotropy and a positive dielectric anisotropy is bend-aligned during operation of the liquid crystal layer is bent. Since the phase plate made of the layers is laminated, the liquid crystal molecule direction of the liquid crystal layer and the optical axis direction of the optical medium of the phase plate correspond to compensate the viewing angle dependence of the optical propagation characteristics of the liquid crystal layer in the on or off state. Therefore, a good black display can be performed and the viewing angle characteristics of the liquid crystal display device can be improved. At the same time, by setting the product of the birefringence of the liquid crystal and the thickness of the liquid crystal layer between 790 and 1190 nm, the front luminance of the liquid crystal display device is increased and the hue change due to the viewing angle of white display is reduced. Have.
[0010]
Claim2The liquid crystal display device according to claim1The positive dielectric anisotropy was 10 or more. Thus, by setting the dielectric anisotropy of the liquid crystal to 10 or more, the bend alignment transition during operation is facilitated, and at the same time, the operation voltage is lowered.
Claim3The liquid crystal display device according to claim 1.Or 2The thickness of the liquid crystal layer was set to 6 μm or less. Thus, by reducing the thickness of the liquid crystal layer to 6 μm or less, the thickness of the liquid crystal layer can be reduced to the same level as that of a conventional TN, and as a result, the electric field strength in the liquid crystal layer is increased. At the same time, and has the effect of lowering the operating voltage.
[0012]
Claim4The liquid crystal display device described above includes a liquid crystal layer in which liquid crystal molecules having a positive refractive index anisotropy and a negative dielectric anisotropy are bend-aligned, and a negative refractive index anisotropy in which the principal axis is bend-aligned And a means for applying a voltage to the liquid crystal layer.
In this way, a phase composed of an optical medium having a negative refractive index anisotropy having a principal axis bend-aligned on a liquid crystal layer in which liquid crystal molecules having a positive refractive index anisotropy and a negative dielectric anisotropy are bend-aligned. Since the plates were laminated, the claim1In the same way as above, it compensates for the viewing angle dependence of the optical propagation characteristics of the liquid crystal layer that is in the on or off state, thereby providing good black display and improving the viewing angle characteristics of the liquid crystal display device. From this state, a stable bend orientation is present.

[0021]
The propagation of polarized light is mathematically expressed by (Equation 1) using the propagation matrices T21a, T22a,... T30a, T21b, T22b,. Ex and Ey are electric field components having vibration surfaces in the x and y directions, respectively. FIG. 8 shows the result of measuring the front luminance of white display (off state) by changing Δn × d in the above liquid crystal display device. The birefringence amounts of the
[0028]
When Δn × d is 1230 nm or more, the polarization modulation between the on state and the off state is in an overmodulation state. Therefore, by setting the off voltage higher than 2 volts, as shown by the broken line in the figure. The white display luminance can be made almost 100% as a relative value. Accordingly, if the value of Δn × d is set to 790 nm or more, the front luminance becomes 70% or more of the maximum value, and a practically sufficient brightness can be obtained, and if this is set to 910 nm or more, the front luminance reaches the limit value of 80 If it is set to not less than% and not less than 990 nm, the front luminance becomes 90% or more of the limit value, and a brighter display can be obtained.
[0029]
On the other hand, in such a liquid crystal display device, the hue of white display changes depending on the viewing direction. In particular, when the azimuth angle φ is 90 degrees and 270 degrees, the tilt angle increases and the display is slightly yellowish. FIG. 9 shows the Δn × d dependency of the chromaticity depending on the viewing angle. The vertical axis represents the average of the color differences obtained by measuring the liquid crystal display device every 5 degrees from the azimuth angle of 0 degrees to 360 degrees from the cone-shaped direction with a tilt angle of 30 degrees. Hereinafter, this is referred to as an average color difference. The color difference is calculated based on the display characteristics in the front direction, and the color system is based on the L * a * b * chromaticity system. The color difference is calculated (ΔC) without considering the luminance difference. The broken line in the figure indicates the characteristic when the off-voltage is adjusted when Δn × d is 1230 nm or more.
[0030]
As can be seen from the figure, when Δn × d is too large, the hue change of white display is large. When the same measurement was performed on the TN liquid crystal display device in which the viewing angle characteristics were improved by the film phase plate, the average color difference was about 3.5. thisReference exampleIn the liquid crystal display device, when Δn × d is 1190 nm or more, the average color difference is twice or more (7 or more) as compared with the TN type with a phase plate, which is not preferable from the aspect of hue change of white display. If Δn × d is set to 1030 nm or less, the average color difference is 5 or less (that is, about 1.5 times or less that of the TN type with a phase plate), and considerably good viewing angle characteristics can be obtained in terms of hue change. Further, if Δn × d is set to 910 nm or less, the average color difference is 3.5 or less, and characteristics superior to those of the TN type with a phase plate can be obtained.
[0031]
Therefore, when both the front luminance and the hue change of white display are combined, the value of Δn × d is set between 790 and 1190 nm because the front relative luminance is 70% or more and the average color difference is 7 or less. desirable. However, in applications where light utilization efficiency on the front side is important, such as a display for a personal laptop computer, the relative luminance is 80% or more if Δn × d is set between 910 and 1190 nm. Thus, it is possible to obtain a liquid crystal display device in which the hue change is practically sufficient. If Δn × d is 990 nm or more, it is more desirable from the viewpoint of brightness. On the other hand, viewing angle characteristics are important in applications that are often viewed by a plurality of people such as televisions. Therefore, it is preferable to set the value of Δn × d between 790 and 1030 nm with emphasis on hue change. In particular, when it is set to 910 nm or less, a liquid crystal display device with very little hue change can be obtained.

After forming the polymer network while maintaining, the nematic liquid crystal in the polymer network can be replaced with a discotic liquid crystal. In this method, a discotic liquid crystal that is difficult to control the alignment is replaced with a nematic liquid crystal that can be controlled relatively easily, thereby achieving a desired alignment distribution. In this case, there is an advantage that protective layers are formed on both sides of the finished bend phase plate without forming a protective film on the upper surface when the hybrid array phase plate is manufactured.

【The invention's effect】
Claims of the invention1According to the described liquid crystal display device, a negative refractive index anisotropic whose principal axis is bend-aligned in a liquid crystal layer in which liquid crystal molecules having a positive refractive index anisotropy and a positive dielectric anisotropy bend in operation Since the phase plate made of an optical medium having the same properties is laminated, the direction of the liquid crystal molecules in the liquid crystal layer corresponds to the optical axis direction of the optical medium in the phase plate, and the viewing angle of the optical propagation characteristics of the liquid crystal layer in the on or off state It is possible to compensate for the dependency and perform good black display and improve the viewing angle characteristics of the liquid crystal display device. At the same time, by setting the product of the birefringence of the liquid crystal and the thickness of the liquid crystal layer between 790 and 1190 nm, the effect of increasing the front luminance of the liquid crystal display device and reducing the hue change due to the viewing angle of white display is achieved. Have.
[0056]
Claim2Then, setting the dielectric anisotropy of the liquid crystal to 10 or more has the effect of facilitating the bend alignment transition during operation and lowering the operating voltage.
Claim3Then, by reducing the thickness of the liquid crystal layer to 6 μm or less, the thickness of the liquid crystal layer can be reduced to the same level as the conventional TN. As a result, the electric field strength in the liquid crystal layer is increased, so that the bend alignment transition during operation is easy. At the same time, it has the effect of lowering the operating voltage.

Claims of the invention4According to the described liquid crystal display device, the liquid crystal layer in which liquid crystal molecules having positive refractive index anisotropy and negative dielectric anisotropy are bend-aligned has a negative refractive index anisotropy in which the main axis is bend-aligned. Since the phase plate made of an optical medium is laminated, the claim1In the same way as above, it compensates for the viewing angle dependence of the optical propagation characteristics of the liquid crystal layer that is in the on or off state, thereby achieving good black display and improving the viewing angle characteristics of the liquid crystal display device. From this state, a stable bend orientation exists.
