Description
【0001】

TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for detecting an abnormal shadow candidate, and more particularly to an improvement in resolution of a target image in which an abnormal shadow candidate is to be detected.
[0002]
[Prior art]
2. Description of the Related Art Conventionally, image processing such as gradation processing and frequency processing has been performed on an image signal representing an image obtained by various image acquisition methods to improve image observation and interpretation performance. Particularly in the field of medical images such as radiation images of the human body, it is necessary for specialists such as doctors to accurately diagnose the presence or absence of a patient's disease or injury based on the obtained images. Image processing for improving the image reading performance has become indispensable.
[0003]
In such image processing, the entire image may be processed, but if the purpose of inspection or diagnosis is clear to some extent, only the desired image portion suitable for the purpose is selectively emphasized. Sometimes.
[0004]
Normally, such an image portion is selected manually by an observer while observing the original image before the image processing is performed, and is manually performed as necessary. The range is affected by the observer's experience and the level of image reading ability, and may not be objective.
[0005]
For example, in a radiographic image taken for the purpose of examining breast cancer, it is necessary to extract a tumor shadow, which is one of the features of a cancerous part, from the radiographic image. Not always possible. For this reason, it is required to accurately detect abnormal shadows such as tumor shadows without depending on the skill of the observer.
[0006]
In order to respond to this demand, research on computer aided diagnosis of medical images (CADM) that automatically detects abnormal shadow candidates using computer processing has been advanced. As one of the CADM techniques, an iris filter process has been proposed (Obata et al., “Detection of Tumor Shadow in DR Image (Iris Filter)”, Transactions of the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers, D-II Vol. J75-D-II No. 3 P663). 670, March 1992). This iris filter processing has been studied as an effective method for detecting a tumor shadow, which is one of the characteristic features of breast cancer, but the target image is not limited to such a tumor shadow in a mammogram. However, if the gradient of the image signal (density or the like) representing the image is concentrated, it can be applied to any image portion.
[0007]
Hereinafter, the outline of the process of detecting a candidate for a tumor shadow using the iris filter will be described, taking the process of detecting a tumor shadow as an example.
[0008]
For example, in a radiographic image (an image represented by an image signal having a high density and a high signal level) on an X-ray film, it is known that a tumor shadow has a slightly lower density value than a surrounding image portion. The density value distribution has a density value gradient such that the density value decreases from the substantially circular periphery toward the center. Therefore, in the tumor shadow, a local gradient of the density value is recognized, and the gradient line is concentrated toward the center of the tumor.
[0009]
The iris filter calculates the gradient of the image signal represented by the density value as a gradient vector, and outputs the degree of concentration of the gradient vector.Iris filter processing is based on the degree of concentration of the gradient vector. This is to detect a shadow.
[0010]
That is, for example, in the mammogram as shown in FIG. 1 The gradient vector at an arbitrary pixel in the figure points near the center of the tumor shadow as shown in FIG. 2 Since the gradient vector does not concentrate on a specific point as shown in FIG. 3C, if the distribution of the direction of the gradient vector is locally evaluated and an area concentrated on the specific point is extracted, , It becomes a mass shadow. Note that a shadow P in which elongated shadows such as mammary glands intersect each other as shown in FIG. 3 For, the gradient vector tends to concentrate on a specific point, which may be a pseudo abnormal shadow.
[0011]
The above is the basic concept of the iris filter processing. The specific algorithm steps are shown below.
[0012]
(Step 1) Calculation of gradient vector
For all pixels constituting the target image, the direction θ of the gradient vector of the image data is obtained for each pixel j based on the calculation formula shown in the following expression (1).
[0013]
(Equation 1)
[0014]
Where f 1 ~ F 16 Is a pixel value (image data) corresponding to a pixel on the outer periphery of a mask having a size of, for example, 5 pixels by 5 pixels centered on the pixel j, as shown in FIG.
[0015]
(Step 2) Calculation of concentration of gradient vector
Next, for all the pixels constituting the target image, the degree of concentration C of the gradient vector having the pixel as the target pixel is calculated according to the following equation (2).
[0016]
(Equation 2)
[0017]
Here, N is the number of pixels existing in a circle having a radius R around the target pixel, and θj is a straight line connecting the target pixel and each pixel j in the circle, and the above equation (1) for each pixel j. (See FIG. 8). Therefore, the degree of concentration C represented by the above equation (2) takes a large value when the direction of the gradient vector of each pixel j is concentrated on the target pixel.
[0018]
By the way, since the gradient vector of each pixel j in the vicinity of the tumor shadow is almost directed to the center of the tumor shadow regardless of the contrast of the tumor shadow, the pixel of interest for which the concentration C takes a large value is the tumor shadow. Can be said to be the central pixel. On the other hand, in the shadow of a linear pattern such as a blood vessel, the value of the degree of concentration C is small because the direction of the gradient vector is biased in a certain direction. Therefore, the value of the degree of concentration C with respect to the pixel of interest is calculated for each of all the pixels constituting the image, and whether or not the value of the degree of concentration C exceeds a preset threshold value is evaluated. Can be detected. That is, this filter has a feature that it is less affected by blood vessels and mammary glands and can efficiently detect a tumor shadow as compared with a normal difference filter.
[0019]
Further, in the actual processing, in order to achieve a detection power that is not affected by the size or shape of the tumor, a device for adaptively changing the size and shape of the filter is used. FIG. 9 shows the filter. This filter is different from the filter shown in FIG. 8 in that radial directions of M kinds of directions (in FIG. 9, 32 directions every 11.25 degrees) are adjacent at an angular interval of 2π / M degrees with respect to the target pixel. The above-mentioned degree of concentration is evaluated only by pixels on the direction line.
[0020]
Here, the coordinates ([x], [y]) of the n-th pixel on the i-th direction line and from the target pixel are given by the following formula (k, l), where the coordinates of the target pixel are (k, l). 3) and (4).
[0021]
(Equation 3)
[0022]
Here, [x] and [y] are the maximum integers not exceeding x and y.
[0023]
Further, the output value up to the pixel at which the maximum concentration is obtained for each direction line on the radial direction line is defined as the concentration Cimax in the direction, and the concentration Cimax is averaged for all the direction lines. Let the value be the degree of concentration C of the gradient vector group for the pixel of interest.
[0024]
Specifically, first, the degree of concentration Ci (n) obtained from the target pixel to the n-th pixel on the i-th radial line is obtained by the following equation (5).
[0025]
(Equation 4)
[0026]
That is, Expression (5) calculates the degree of concentration Ci (n) by changing the start point of the target pixel and the end point within the range from Rmin to Rmax.
[0027]
Here, Rmin and Rmax are the minimum value and the maximum value of the radius of the tumor shadow to be detected (extracted).
[0028]
Next, the degree of concentration C of the gradient vector group is calculated by the following equations (6) and (7).
[0029]
(Equation 5)
[0030]
Here, since Cimax in Expression (6) is the maximum value of the concentration Ci (n) for each radial direction line obtained in Expression (5), the concentration Ci (n) is the maximum value from the pixel of interest. The region up to the pixel becomes a candidate region of the tumor shadow in the direction of the direction line.
[0031]
Equation (6) is calculated for all radial direction lines to determine the outline (edge point) of the region of the tumor shadow on each direction line, and the adjacent edge of the region of the tumor shadow on each direction line is calculated. By connecting the points with a straight line or a non-linear curve, it is possible to specify the outline of a region that can be a candidate for a tumor shadow.
[0032]
Further, in Expression (7), a value obtained by averaging the maximum value Cimax of the degree of concentration given by Expression (6) in this region in all directions of the radial line (in Expression (7), the case of 32 directions is illustrated) Ask for. The obtained value is an output value I of the iris filter processing, and this output value I is compared with a predetermined fixed threshold value T suitable for determining whether or not the shadow is a tumor shadow. If so, it is determined that the region around the pixel of interest is an abnormal shadow candidate (tumor shadow candidate), and if I <T, it is determined that the region is not a tumor shadow candidate.
[0033]
It should be noted that the state in which the size and shape of the area for evaluating the degree of concentration C of the gradient vector group in Equation (7) adaptively changes in accordance with the distribution of the gradient vector is determined by a human who expands or contracts in accordance with the brightness of the outside world. The above-described method of detecting a candidate region of a tumor shadow using the degree of concentration of a gradient vector is called iris filter processing because it resembles the state of the iris of the eye.
[0034]
The calculation of the concentration Ci (n) described above may use the following equation (5 ') instead of the equation (5).
[0035]
(Equation 6)
[0036]
That is, equation (5 ') calculates the degree of concentration Ci (n) within a range where the pixel corresponding to the minimum value Rmin of the radius of the tumor shadow to be extracted is set as a start point and the end point is set between Rmin and Rmax. is there.
[0037]
By the above-mentioned steps, the iris filter can effectively detect only a tumor shadow of a desired size from a radiographic image, and has been studied mainly for detecting a cancerous portion in a mammogram.
[0038]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
As described above, the iris filter processing has a feature that it is possible to efficiently separate and detect a tumor shadow from a non-tumor shadow such as a blood vessel or a mammary gland compared to the normal difference filter processing. In the irradiation direction, the tumor shadow may partially overlap with the non-tumor shadows of the blood vessels, mammary glands, and the like. In particular, as the size of the tumor shadow is larger, the tumor shadow tends to overlap with other structures that are not the tumor shadow.
[0039]
When the non-tumor shadow overlaps the tumor shadow in this way, the direction of the density gradient vector is disturbed, the degree of concentration of the gradient vector on the target pixel is reduced, and the output value of the iris filter processing may be reduced. .
[0040]
If the decreased output value falls below the threshold value, a region that should normally be detected as a tumor shadow candidate is not detected, which is not preferable from the viewpoint of diagnosis support.
[0041]
In addition, not only the iris filter processing but also the processing for detecting an abnormal shadow candidate based on the feature amount of the abnormal shadow has a similar problem.
[0042]
The present invention has been made in view of the above circumstances, and provides an abnormal shadow candidate detection method and apparatus capable of stably detecting the abnormal shadow candidate regardless of the size of the abnormal shadow candidate to be detected. It is intended to do so.
[0043]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
The method and apparatus for detecting an abnormal shadow candidate according to the present invention reduces the resolution of the target image or reduces the sharpness as the size of the abnormal shadow candidate to be detected increases. The other structures that have a higher probability of overlapping with the abnormal shadow candidate as become larger are smoothed relatively to the abnormal shadow candidate.
[0044]
That is, the first method for detecting an abnormal shadow candidate according to the present invention is a method for detecting an abnormal shadow candidate having a desired size in a radiographic image, wherein the abnormal shadow candidate for which the radiographic image is to be detected is used. In accordance with the size of the image, the original image data representing the radiation image is subjected to a resolution conversion process, and the resolution conversion process is performed so as to obtain an image having a resolution that becomes lower as the size increases. Detecting the abnormal shadow candidate based on the obtained resolution-converted image data.
[0046]
Also, performing resolution conversion processing on the original image data means that the resolution conversion processing is directly performed on the original image data, or that the resolution conversion processing is performed on the resolution conversion image data obtained by performing the resolution conversion processing on the original image data. It is intended to include both cases where processing is performed.
[0048]
It is preferable that the abnormal shadow candidate is detected in accordance with the iris filter processing for evaluating the concentration of the density gradient vector described above, particularly when a tumor shadow candidate is detected. When a candidate is detected, the candidate may be detected according to a detection process based on a morphological operation. The same applies to the following inventions.
[0049]
The calcified shadow candidate detection process by the process based on the morphological operation uses a structural element set in accordance with the size and shape of the abnormal shadow (calcified shadow) candidate to be detected, and performs processing on the original image data. It is an arithmetic processing such as dilation processing, erosion processing, opening processing, closing processing, etc., and is described in the document "Extraction of microcalcification image by morphological filter using multiple structural elements". IEICE Transactions D-II Vol. J75-D-II No. 7 P1170-1176, July 1992, document "Basics of Morphology and Its Application to Mammogram Processing", MEDICAL IMAGING TECHNOLOGY Vol. 12 No. 1 January 1994, and Japanese Patent Application No. 7-316679 filed by the present applicant.
[0050]
The method for detecting an abnormal shadow candidate according to the second aspect of the present invention is the method for detecting an abnormal shadow candidate of a desired size in a radiographic image, the method for detecting an abnormal shadow candidate for which the radiographic image is to be detected. In accordance with the size, the original image data representing the radiation image is subjected to a sharpness conversion process, and the sharpness conversion process is performed so that the image has a sharpness that decreases as the size increases. And detecting the abnormal shadow candidate based on the sharpness-converted image data obtained as described above.
[0052]
Also, performing the sharpness conversion process on the original image data means that the sharpness conversion process is directly performed on the original image data, and the sharpness conversion image data obtained by performing the sharpness conversion process on the original image data. And further performing the sharpness conversion process.
[0054]
A first apparatus for detecting an abnormal shadow candidate according to the present invention is an apparatus for detecting an abnormal shadow candidate having a desired size in a radiographic image. Resolution setting means for setting a resolution corresponding to the size such that the resolution decreases as the size increases; and an original representing the radiation image such that the radiation image has the set resolution. Resolution conversion processing means for performing resolution conversion processing on the image data, wherein the abnormal shadow candidate is detected based on the resolution conversion image data obtained by performing the resolution conversion processing.
[0056]
Further, the resolution conversion processing to the original image data by the resolution conversion processing means is performed when the resolution conversion processing is directly performed on the original image data, or when the resolution conversion processing is performed on the original image data. Further, it is intended to include both cases where resolution conversion processing is performed.
[0058]
The detection of abnormal shadow candidates is preferably performed in accordance with the above-described iris filter processing for evaluating the degree of concentration of the density gradient vector, particularly when detecting a tumor shadow candidate, but calcification shadow, which is a form of cancerous tissue, is preferable. When a candidate is detected, the candidate may be detected according to a detection process based on a morphological operation. The same applies to the following inventions.
[0059]
A second abnormal shadow candidate detecting device of the present invention is an abnormal shadow candidate detecting device that detects an abnormal shadow candidate of a desired size in a radiographic image. Sharpness setting means for setting the sharpness according to the size such that the sharpness decreases as the size increases, and the radiation setting unit sets the radiation image to the set sharpness. Sharpness conversion processing means for performing a sharpness conversion process on original image data representing an image, and detecting the abnormal shadow candidate based on the sharpness conversion image data obtained by performing the sharpness conversion process It is characterized by the following.
[0061]
Further, the sharpness conversion processing to the original image data by the sharpness conversion processing means includes a case where the original image data is directly subjected to the sharpness conversion processing and a case where the original image data is subjected to the sharpness conversion processing. It is intended to include both cases where the sharpness conversion processing is further performed on the image data.
[0063]
【The invention's effect】
According to the method and apparatus for detecting an abnormal shadow candidate of the present invention, as the size of the abnormal shadow candidate to be detected increases, the resolution of the target image is reduced, or the sharpness is reduced. Other structures that have a high probability of overlapping with the abnormal shadow candidate as the size of the shadow candidate increases become relatively smooth with respect to the abnormal shadow candidate. It is possible to prevent the output value of the processing for determining whether or not to be reduced by another structure overlapping the abnormal shadow candidate, and to improve the detectability of the abnormal shadow candidate.
[0064]

[0104]
As described above, according to the abnormal shadow candidate detecting device of the present embodiment, even when another structure overlaps with the tumor shadow because the size of the abnormal shadow candidate to be detected is large, the influence of the other structures is not affected. By reducing the density, it is possible to accurately detect a tumor shadow that should be originally detected.

Note that, in the abnormal shadow candidate detection device of the above embodiment, an example of detecting a tumor shadow candidate using the iris filter processing means has been described, but the abnormal shadow candidate detection device of the present invention is not limited to this. Various combinations can be considered as the unsharp mask prepared in advance according to the type of abnormal shadow to be detected. In the present embodiment, however, the sharpness of the image represented by the input image data remains unchanged. Here, the iris filter processing means 11 has three types of threshold values T set in advance. 1 ', T 2 ', T 3 ', The second threshold T 2 'And each output value I of the iris filter processing 1 ', I 2 ', I 3 '.
[0132]
Output value I of iris filter processing 1 Mass shadow P corresponding to ' 1 Is output value I because the density gradient vector is concentrated at the central pixel. 1 Is the second threshold T 2 ′, Is detected as a tumor shadow candidate, and is output from the iris filter processing means 11 to the
[0133]
On the other hand, the output value I of the iris filter processing 2 Gamma shadow corresponding to ' 2 Is output value I because the concentration gradient vector does not concentrate on a certain portion. 2 'Is the second threshold T 2 ′, And is not detected as a tumor shadow candidate.
[0134]
Also, the output value I of the iris filter processing is 3 ', A shadow P in which the shadow of the blood vessel overlaps the shadow of the mass corresponding to 3 Is that the density gradient vector of the tumor shadow alone is concentrated in a certain part, but the concentration of the density gradient vector is disturbed by overlapping the shadow of the blood vessel, and the output value I 3 'Is a tumor shadow P 1 Output value I corresponding to 1 ', But the second sharpness-converted image data to be subjected to the iris filter processing is inferior in sharpness to the first sharpness-converted image data. Therefore, the influence of the concentration gradient vector on the degree of concentration is reduced.
[0135]
As a result, the output value I of the iris filter processing 3 'Is the second threshold T 2 ′, Is detected as a tumor shadow candidate, and is output to the

As a result of this iris filter processing, the tumor shadow P 1 , Mammary gland shadow P 2 , Shadow P in which the shadow of the blood vessel overlaps the shadow of the mass 3 For each output value of each iris filter process for 1 ″, I 2 ″, I 3 ", These are the level values as shown in FIG. 3 (4).

Since the result of this comparison is the same as the result of the comparison for the second sharpness-converted image data, the description is omitted, but the

[0141]
On the other hand, the whole image data S that has been subjected to image processing suitable for observing the whole image, such as gradation processing and frequency processing, by the whole image processing means 30 is also input to the display means 50. While displaying the image, only the image portion of the abnormal shadow candidate in the whole image is replaced with the image of the abnormal shadow candidate image-processed by the local image processing means 40 and displayed. Provided for diagnosis.
[0142]
As described above, according to the abnormal shadow candidate detecting device of the present embodiment, even when another structure overlaps with the tumor shadow because the size of the abnormal shadow candidate to be detected is large, the influence of the other structures is not affected. By reducing the density, it is possible to accurately detect a tumor shadow that should be originally detected.
[0143]
The abnormal shadow candidate detection device of the above embodiment is not limited to the example of detecting a tumor shadow candidate using the iris filter processing means, and is not limited to a mammogram as a target image.
[0144]
Further, in the abnormal shadow candidate detecting device of the present embodiment, as the size of the tumor shadow candidate to be detected increases, the sharpness setting means sets a non-sharp mask such that the sharpness is lower than that of the original image. The sharpness setting means sets the degree of enhancement such that the sharpness is improved as compared with the original image as the size of the tumor shadow candidate to be detected becomes smaller. Good.
