[Description of the embodiments of the present disclosure]
First, the contents of the embodiments of the present disclosure will be listed and described.
[1] A ferrule according to an embodiment of the present disclosure is a ferrule that houses a plurality of optical fibers and is fixed to the plurality of optical fibers by an adhesive. The ferrule includes a first surface on which a plurality of light input/output parts configured to be optically coupled to the plurality of optical fibers are provided, a second surface located on the opposite side of the first surface in a first direction intersecting with the first surface, a third surface extending from the first surface toward the second surface and connected to at least the first surface, a window portion opening in the third surface, a plurality of fiber grooves provided between the first surface and the second surface, extending along the first direction and arranged along a second direction intersecting with the first direction, and configured to determine the positions of the plurality of optical fibers with respect to the plurality of light input/output parts, and an introduction region provided between the plurality of fiber grooves and the second surface and configured to introduce an adhesive. In this ferrule, when viewed from a third direction intersecting with the first direction and the second direction, the plurality of fiber grooves and at least a portion of the introduction region are located inside the window portion.
In this ferrule, the multiple fiber grooves are located inside the window. That is, the worker can visually confirm the multiple fiber grooves from the window. Therefore, when storing multiple optical fibers in the ferrule, the worker can easily place the multiple optical fibers in the multiple fiber grooves. Therefore, with this ferrule, the positioning of the multiple optical fibers can be easily performed. Furthermore, with this ferrule, at least a part of the planned introduction area into which the adhesive is introduced is located inside the window. Therefore, the adhesive can be easily introduced from the window to a part of the planned introduction area that is located inside the window. Therefore, with this ferrule, it is possible to easily manufacture an optical connector, such as arranging the optical fiber and introducing the adhesive to the optical fiber. Furthermore, in this ferrule, when an ultraviolet-curing adhesive is used as the adhesive, ultraviolet rays can be directly irradiated from the window to the ultraviolet-curing adhesive introduced into the part of the planned introduction area that is located inside the window. With this ferrule, it is easier to fix multiple optical fibers to the ferrule using the ultraviolet-curing adhesive, and in this respect, it is also easy to manufacture an optical connector.
[2] In the ferrule of [1] above, when viewed from the third direction, the ratio of the area of the window to the sum of the area of the portion of the third surface where the window is provided and the area of the portion of the third surface where the window is not provided may be 50% or more. In this case, the ratio of the portion located inside the window to the area intended for adhesive introduction can be increased, making it easier to introduce the adhesive into the inside of the ferrule. This makes it easier to manufacture an optical connector with this ferrule. Also, in the case where an ultraviolet-curing adhesive is used as the adhesive in this ferrule, the amount of ultraviolet-curing adhesive directly irradiated with ultraviolet rays can be increased to more firmly bond multiple optical fibers to the ferrule.
[3] In the ferrule of [2] above, the ratio of the area of the window portion to the total area may be 90% or less. In this case, the mechanical strength of the ferrule can be prevented from decreasing. This makes it possible to provide a ferrule with a predetermined strength.
[4] In any of the ferrules [1] to [3] above, the length of the window portion along the first direction may be 4 mm or more and 10 mm or less, and the width of the window portion along the second direction may be 2 mm or more and 4 mm or less. By having the length of the window portion be 4 mm or more and the width of the window portion be 2 mm or more, the adhesive can be more easily introduced into the inside of the ferrule. As a result, this ferrule makes it easier to manufacture an optical connector. In addition, in the case where an ultraviolet-curing adhesive is used as the adhesive in this ferrule, by having the length of the window portion be 4 mm or more and the width of the window portion be 2 mm or more, the amount of ultraviolet-curing adhesive directly irradiated with ultraviolet light can be increased, and multiple optical fibers can be more firmly fixed to the ferrule. On the other hand, by having the length of the window portion be 10 mm or less and the width of the window portion be 4 mm or less, the mechanical strength of the ferrule can be suppressed from decreasing. As a result, a ferrule having a predetermined strength can be provided.
[5] In any of the ferrules [1] to [4] above, a first bottom surface may be provided between the plurality of fiber grooves and the second surface, a second bottom surface may be provided between the first bottom surface and the second surface, and a step may be provided between the first bottom surface and the second bottom surface. The second bottom surface may be closer to the window portion than the first bottom surface in the third direction. The introduction region may be configured to include the first bottom surface and the step. In this case, when the adhesive is introduced, the step prevents the adhesive from entering the second bottom surface. Thus, this ferrule can prevent the adhesive from leaking out from the second surface (rear end) of the ferrule.
[6] In the ferrule of [5] above, the step may be located inside the window when viewed from the third direction. In this case, the work can be performed while checking the entirety of the introduced adhesive. Furthermore, in this ferrule, when an ultraviolet-curable adhesive is used as the adhesive, ultraviolet rays can be directly irradiated onto the entirety of the ultraviolet-curable adhesive introduced into the intended introduction area. Thus, the proportion of the ultraviolet-curable adhesive that is directly irradiated with ultraviolet rays can be increased, and multiple optical fibers can be efficiently fixed to the ferrule.
[7] Any of the ferrules [1] to [6] above may further include a fourth surface located between the first surface and the second surface and intersecting with the third surface. The ferrule body may be formed by a surface including the first surface and the third surface. The flange may be formed by a surface including the second surface and the fourth surface. When viewed from the first direction, the ferrule body may be located inside the flange, and the window portion may be separated from the fourth surface. In this case, the flange has higher rigidity than the ferrule body. Therefore, in this ferrule, deformation due to stress generated when the adhesive cures and shrinks is unlikely to occur. Furthermore, by separating the window portion from the fourth surface, deformation of the ferrule when the ferrule thermally expands or when the ferrule thermally shrinks is suppressed.
[8] Any of the ferrules [1] to [6] above may further include a fourth surface located between the first surface and the second surface and intersecting with the third surface. The ferrule body may be formed by a surface including the first surface and the third surface. The flange may be formed by a surface including the second surface and the fourth surface. When viewed from the first direction, the ferrule body may be located inside the flange, and the window portion may extend to the fourth surface. In this case, deformation due to stress generated during hardening and shrinkage of the adhesive is unlikely to occur. Furthermore, the positions of the multiple optical fibers can be easily confirmed between the multiple fiber grooves and the second surface, and the multiple optical fibers can be easily introduced into the multiple fiber grooves, making it possible to easily manufacture an optical connector.
[9] Any of the ferrules [1] to [6] above may further include a fourth surface located between the first surface and the second surface and intersecting with the third surface. The ferrule body may be formed by a surface including the first surface and the third surface. The flange may be formed by a surface including the second surface and the fourth surface. When viewed from the first direction, the ferrule body may be located inside the flange, and the window portion may extend to the second surface. In this case, deformation due to stress generated during hardening and shrinkage of the adhesive is unlikely to occur. Furthermore, the positions of the multiple optical fibers can be more easily confirmed between the multiple fiber grooves and the second surface, and the multiple optical fibers can be more easily introduced into the multiple fiber grooves, making it possible to easily manufacture the optical connector. In addition, a reinforcing material for reinforcing the ferrule can be easily introduced between the adhesive and the second surface.
[10] In any of the ferrules [1] to [9] above, the multiple light input/output sections may include multiple lenses configured to optically couple with the multiple optical fibers arranged in the multiple fiber grooves. The ferrule may be configured to include a material that can transmit light having a wavelength of 1000 nm or more and 1675 nm or less. In this case, it is possible to provide an optical connector that can input and output optical signals input and output from the multiple optical fibers from the multiple light input/output sections provided on the first surface. Furthermore, when an ultraviolet-curing adhesive is used as the adhesive, ultraviolet rays can be irradiated onto the ultraviolet-curing adhesive from the window portion, so that the material constituting the ferrule does not need to be ultraviolet-transparent. Therefore, this ferrule can increase the options for materials that can be used for the ferrule.
[11] An optical connector according to an embodiment of the present disclosure includes a ferrule according to any one of [1] to [10] above, a plurality of optical fibers arranged in a plurality of fiber grooves so as to be optically coupled to a plurality of light input/output portions, and a lid portion that presses the plurality of optical fibers toward the plurality of fiber grooves inside the window portion. The plurality of optical fibers are fixed to the ferrule by adhesive introduced into at least one of the intended introduction area and the plurality of fiber grooves. In this case, an optical connector can be provided in which the positioning of the plurality of optical fibers and the fixing of the plurality of optical fibers to the ferrule by the adhesive are reliably performed. Furthermore, according to this optical connector, since the plurality of optical fibers are pressed against the plurality of fiber grooves by the lid portion, the positioning of the plurality of optical fibers in the plurality of fiber grooves can be more reliably performed.
[12] In the optical connector of [11] above, a reinforcing material may be introduced between the adhesive and the second surface. This optical connector can improve the mechanical strength of the ferrule.

The
The
The
The
The
The
The pair of side surfaces 37 are a pair of surfaces connected to the
In the
The
The
As shown in FIG. 4, the
In the
The height of the
The
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the
The adhesive 60 is introduced into the
The reinforcing
Here, the size of the
Next, a method for manufacturing an
Then, the
After the placement of the
When the adhesive 60 has finished hardening, the reinforcing
In the
In the
When viewed from the Z direction, the ratio of the area of the
In the
In the
In the
The
The distance between the
In the
The
In the
In the

(Fifth Modification)
FIG. 10 is a perspective view showing a
The ferrule and optical connector according to the present disclosure are not limited to the above-described embodiment, and various other modifications are possible. For example, a portion of the fiber groove may be provided with an inclined portion inclined with respect to the XY plane, and the inclined portion may be connected to the first bottom surface. The height of the inclined portion from the first bottom surface along the Z direction may increase as it moves away from the first bottom surface along the X direction toward the first surface. In this case, the optical fiber can be more easily placed in the fiber groove by aligning the optical fiber along the inclined portion.
In the above embodiment, the ferrule is integrally formed with the multiple lenses, but the ferrule may be formed separately from the lenses. In this case, the ferrule may be made of a material other than light-transmitting resin. Even if the ferrule is made of a material other than light-transmitting resin, the ferrule according to the present disclosure allows ultraviolet light to be directly irradiated from the window portion onto the ultraviolet-curable adhesive introduced into the intended introduction area. In addition, it is sufficient that the adhesive is introduced into at least one of the intended introduction area and the multiple fiber grooves.
