Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to an image forming apparatus such as a copying machine, a laser printer, a facsimile machine, a printing apparatus using an electrophotographic method or an electrostatic recording method, or a multifunction device having a plurality of these functions.
2. Description of the Related Art Conventionally, in an image forming apparatus such as a copying machine using an electrophotographic method, a toner image formed on an image bearing member such as a photoreceptor or an intermediate transfer member is transferred onto a recording material. Transfer of a toner image from an image carrier to a recording material is often performed by applying a transfer voltage to a transfer member such as a transfer roller that comes into contact with the image carrier to form a transfer portion. The transfer voltage is based on a transfer partial voltage corresponding to the electrical resistance of the transfer section detected during a pre-rotation step before image formation, and a preset recording material shared voltage according to the type of recording material. can be determined. Thereby, it is possible to set an appropriate transfer voltage according to environmental changes, usage history of the transfer member, type of recording material, and the like. In order to obtain good transferability, it is important to stably form a sufficient electric field in the transfer portion.
Further,
However, in conventional image forming apparatuses, when a recording material with low electrical resistance (hereinafter also simply referred to as "low resistance paper") is used for image formation, image defects such as a decrease in image density may occur. be. This is because when low-resistance paper is used for image formation, a transfer current flows through the recording material to contact members such as conveyance rollers and guide members that are in contact with the recording material in the recording material conveyance path. This is because an appropriate transfer current cannot be supplied to the recording material. For example, when low-resistance paper such as vapor-deposited paper with a metal layer on one side is used for image formation, transfer current may flow into contact members such as a transport roller or guide member through the recording material during transport of the recording material. This may occur. As a result, an optimal transfer current does not flow to the recording material, which may cause image defects such as a decrease in density. Note that "low resistance paper" and the like and "recording material" are sometimes referred to as "paper." However, even in this case, "paper" refers to a recording material made of a material other than paper, or a recording material made of a material containing a material other than paper (for example, a recording material with a metal layer such as vapor-deposited paper). material).
In the configuration described in
Further, in a situation where such a phenomenon occurs, it may be difficult to set an appropriate transfer voltage using the conventional adjustment mode as described in
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION Therefore, an object of the present invention is to easily adjust a transfer voltage that is advantageous for transfer performance to low-resistance paper, which can cause transfer current to flow into members existing in the conveyance path of the recording material, without increasing the operational load on the operator. It is possible to set the control.

The charged surface of the photosensitive drum 51 is scanned and exposed by the exposure device 42 based on image information, and an electrostatic image is formed on the photosensitive drum 51. The exposure device 42 is a laser scanner in this embodiment. The exposure device 42 emits a laser beam according to the separated color image information output from the

In this embodiment, the primary transfer roller 47 includes an elastic layer of ion conductive foam rubber (NBR rubber) and a core metal. The outer diameter of the primary transfer roller 47 is, for example, 15 to 20 mm. Further, as the primary transfer roller 47, a roller having an electrical resistance value of 1×10 5 to 1×10 8 Ω (measured at N/N (23° C., 50% RH), 2 kV applied) can be suitably used. .

2. Control of Secondary Transfer Voltage Next, control of the secondary transfer voltage will be explained. FIG. 3 is a flowchart showing an outline of the procedure for controlling the secondary transfer voltage in this embodiment. In this embodiment, constant voltage control and constant current control are possible to control the secondary transfer voltage, but as will be described in detail later, basically constant voltage control is used. Note that constant voltage control is control that adjusts the output of the power supply so that the voltage applied to the object is substantially constant at a target voltage. Further, constant current control is control that adjusts the output of the power supply so that the current supplied to the supply target is substantially constant at a target current.
First, when the control section 30 (image formation
Next, the control unit 30 (image formation

そして、制御部30(二次転写電圧記憶部/演算部31f)は、このVtr(=Vb+Vp+ΔV)をRAM33(又は二次転写電圧記憶部/演算部31f)に書き込む。

Here, the recording material shared voltage Vp may vary depending on the surface properties of the recording material S as well as information related to the thickness of the recording material S (thickness, basis weight, etc.). Therefore, the table data may be set so that the recording material shared voltage Vp also changes depending on information related to the surface properties of the recording material S. Further, in this embodiment, information related to the thickness of the recording material S (further information related to the surface quality of the recording material S) is included in the job information acquired in S101. However, the
Next, the control unit 30 (image forming process unit 31c) executes image formation, sends the recording material S to the secondary transfer unit N, and applies the secondary transfer voltage Vtr determined as described above to the secondary transfer inner roller. 45a to perform secondary transfer (S107). Thereafter, the control unit 30 (image forming process unit 31c) repeats S107 until all images of the job are transferred onto the recording material S and outputted (S108).
Regarding the primary transfer unit 48, the same ATVC control as described above is performed from the start of the job until the toner image is conveyed to the primary transfer unit 48, but a detailed explanation will be omitted here.
3. Secondary Transfer Voltage Supply Method The secondary transfer voltage is generally controlled on the premise that all the current flows from the transfer rollers, which are disposed opposite to each other with the intermediate transfer belt in between, to the opposing roller. However, when low-resistance paper such as a recording material with a metal layer is used for image formation, the current that should normally flow to the opposing roller passes through the recording material and comes into contact with the recording material present in the recording material conveyance path. A phenomenon occurs in which the liquid flows into contact members such as rollers and guide members. If the current from the transfer roller flows into a member other than the opposing roller, the total impedance related to secondary transfer will change, so when controlling the secondary transfer voltage at a constant voltage, the current value may vary greatly. .
Here, in this embodiment, the reason why a power supply method (internal power supply method) is used in which a voltage is applied to the inner secondary transfer roller 75a and the outer secondary transfer roller 75b is electrically grounded will be explained.
FIG. 20 shows the case where the secondary transfer voltage is applied from the secondary transfer
FIG. 21 is a schematic diagram showing a current path when a secondary transfer voltage is applied from the inner
Note that even when an image is formed on the paper base material side of the recording material S having a metal layer, the electrical resistance of the recording material S as a whole is low, and the metal layer is exposed at the end surface etc. Since there are some parts, the current flow has the same tendency as described above. Furthermore, in the recording material S having a metal layer, the surface of the metal layer may be coated with a material other than metal (for example, resin), but in that case, the same tendency as described above occurs regarding the flow of current. Become.
Further, the contact members that are present in the conveyance path of the recording material S and may come into contact with the recording material S at the same time as the secondary transfer portion N (
Next, the reason why the basic operation of the secondary transfer voltage is constant voltage control in this embodiment will be explained.
The current flowing through the secondary transfer portion N when the secondary transfer voltage is applied to the inner
4. Overview of Simple Adjustment Mode Next, a simple adjustment mode (herein also simply referred to as "adjustment mode") for adjusting the set voltage of the secondary transfer voltage will be described. Depending on the type and condition of the recording material S used for image formation, the moisture content and electrical resistance value of the recording material S may be significantly different from those of the standard recording material S. In this case, optimal transfer may not be performed with the secondary transfer voltage set using the default recording material sharing voltage Vp set in advance as described above.
First, the secondary transfer voltage needs to be a voltage necessary to transfer the toner on the
On the other hand, depending on the type and condition of the recording material S actually used for image formation, the moisture content of the recording material S may be increased, and the electrical resistance may be lower than the value assumed as a standard value. Sometimes it happens. In this case, if the secondary transfer voltage is set using the preset default recording material sharing voltage Vp, the voltage may become excessive and image defects may occur due to abnormal discharge. Therefore, in this case, it is desirable to lower the set voltage of the secondary transfer voltage by lowering the recording material shared voltage Vp.
Therefore, operators such as users and service personnel adjust (change) the recording material shared voltage Vp according to the recording material S actually used for image formation, thereby adjusting the secondary transfer voltage during job execution. It is desirable to be able to adjust (change) the set voltage to an optimal value. In other words, it is only necessary to select the optimal recording material sharing voltage Vp+ΔV (adjustment amount) according to the recording material S actually used for image formation. This adjustment may also be performed by the following method. For example, an operator outputs the image he wants to output while switching the secondary transfer voltage for each sheet of recording material S, checks whether there are any image defects that occur in the output image, and selects the optimal secondary transfer voltage. This is a method of determining the set voltage (more specifically, recording material shared voltage Vp+ΔV). However, in this method, the output of the image and the adjustment of the set voltage of the secondary transfer voltage are repeated, which may increase the amount of recording material S that is wasted or take a long time.
In this embodiment, the

5. Chart In the present embodiment, in the adjustment mode, the
Considering the visual confirmation by the operator, the larger the patch size of the chart output in the adjustment mode, the easier it is to confirm image defects. However, when the patches are large, the number of patches that can be formed on one sheet of recording material S decreases. The shape of the patch may be square or the like. The color of the patch can be determined depending on the image defect to be confirmed and the ease of confirmation. For example, when the secondary transfer voltage is increased from a low value to a high value, the lower limit value of the secondary transfer voltage is determined from the voltage value that allows patches of secondary colors such as red, green, and blue to be appropriately transferred. Can be done. For example, when an operator visually checks, if the secondary transfer voltage is further increased, the voltage value at which image defects will occur on halftone patches due to high secondary transfer voltage, The upper limit of the transfer voltage can be determined.
The chart used in the adjustment mode in this embodiment will be explained. In the adjustment mode in this embodiment, two types of
In this embodiment, the maximum size (maximum paper passing size) of the recording material S on which the
The
The
Considering the visual confirmation by the operator, the size of the patch is required to be a size that allows the operator to easily determine the presence or absence of an image defect. Regarding the transferability of the blue
Note that it is preferable that no patch be formed near the leading edge and trailing edge of the recording material S in the process direction (for example, within a range of about 20 to 30 mm inward from the edge). This is because there may be image defects that occur only at the leading or trailing edge of the recording material S, and it may be difficult to determine whether or not the image defects are caused by the secondary transfer voltage setting. It is from.
Note that the solid image is an image at the maximum density level. Furthermore, in this embodiment, a halftone image is an image with a toner coverage amount of 10% to 80% when the toner coverage amount of a solid image is 100%. When using the above-mentioned
The
The
Using the above-mentioned
In addition, in this embodiment, not only the standard size but also any size (A5 size or more, 13 inches x 19.2 inches or less) can be specified, for example, by the operator inputting and specifying from the

First, the operator selects the type and size of the recording material S to be used in the adjustment mode. (S1). At this time, the control section 30 (adjustment process section 31d) causes the
Next, the operator sets the center voltage value of the secondary transfer voltage to be applied when outputting the chart, and whether the chart is to be output on one side or both sides of the recording material S (S2). In addition, in this embodiment, in order to be able to adjust the secondary transfer voltage at the time of secondary transfer to the front side (first side) and back side (second side) in double-sided printing (automatic double-sided printing), the adjustment mode is also used. Charts can be output on both sides of the recording material S. In order to perform the above settings, the control section 30 (adjustment process section 31d) causes the
Next, when the output instruction section 93 of the
Next, the control unit 30 (adjustment process unit 31d) controls to output a chart (S4). At this time, the control unit 30 (adjustment process unit 31d) cuts out the chart data as described above based on the information on the size of the recording material S acquired in S1, and creates 11 sets while changing the secondary transfer voltage every 150V. control to output a chart that is a transcription of the patch set. For example, assume that the
Next, the control unit 30 (adjustment process unit 31d) determines whether the recording material S is low resistance paper (S5). In this embodiment, the control unit 30 (adjustment process unit 31d) uses the
The determination at S5 will be further explained. FIG. 17 shows the following IV curves. First, it is an IV curve obtained when there is no recording material S in the secondary transfer portion N (here, also referred to as "at the time of ATVC control"). It is also an IV curve obtained when normal paper (typically plain paper) is passed through. In addition, when low resistance paper (typically a recording material S having a metal layer) is passed through, a current flows into a contact member that contacts the recording material S at a place other than the secondary transfer area N. be. When comparing the IV curve obtained during ATVC control and the IV curve obtained during normal paper feeding, the voltage required to flow the target current Itarget is The value increases when normal paper is passed than during ATVC control. On the other hand, when passing low-resistance paper that causes current to flow into the contact member, the total impedance related to secondary transfer becomes relatively low as described above. As a result, the voltage value required to flow the same target Itarget becomes lower. In other words, if a current value lower than the current value determined from the IV curve obtained during ATVC control is detected when the same voltage is applied, it can be determined that the paper is normal paper. On the other hand, if a current value higher than the current value determined from the IV curve obtained during ATVC control is detected when the same voltage is applied, it can be determined that the paper is of low resistance.
In this example, when a current value of 1.2 times or more of the current value determined from the IV curve obtained during ATVC control is detected in one or more patch parts when outputting a chart, it is determined that the paper is low resistance paper. However, it is not limited to this. The above-mentioned multiple is not limited to 1.2, and any appropriate multiple of 1 or more can be used, for example. As will be described later, it is sufficient to be able to determine with sufficient accuracy whether or not the paper is of such low resistance that current can flow into the contact member to the extent that it is desirable to control the secondary transfer voltage under constant current control.
Alternatively, it may be determined that the paper is low resistance paper when a current value equal to or greater than a predetermined value is detected. Furthermore, in this embodiment, the case is assumed that a current value that is a predetermined times or more when the recording material S is not present (or a current value that is more than the predetermined value) is detected in one or more patch parts, but two or more patch parts The detection may be performed at an arbitrary number of patch sections. Alternatively, it may be detected in one or more predetermined patch categories (adjustment values, patch numbers). Similarly to the above, it is sufficient to be able to determine with sufficient accuracy whether or not the paper is of such low resistance that current can flow into the contact member to the extent that constant current control of the secondary transfer voltage is desired as will be described later.
Next, the processing after S6 when it is determined in S5 that the paper is low resistance paper ("Yes") will be described. Note that the processing from S14' onward when it is determined in S5 that the paper is not low resistance paper ("No") will be described later.
As described above, the control unit 30 (adjustment process unit 31d) determines the relationship between voltage and current (IV A polynomial of quadratic or higher order (in this embodiment, a quadratic equation) of the curve) is obtained (S5). The control unit 30 (adjustment process unit 31d) writes information on the relationship between this voltage and current into the RAM 33 (or adjustment process unit 31d). Note that the current when the recording material S is in the secondary transfer section N can typically be detected by detecting the current during patch transfer (at the patch section), but depending on the voltage level, it is necessary to detect the current when there is no toner before or after the patch. The detection may be performed in the recording material S portion.
Then, the control unit (adjustment process unit 31d) obtains the recording material shared voltage Vp(n) at each voltage level from the following information (S6). In other words, the relationship (quadratic equation) between the voltage and current when there is a recording material S in the secondary transfer area N obtained in S5, and the voltage when there is no recording material S in the secondary transfer area N obtained in S3. and the relationship (quadratic equation) with the current. Here, n indicates each voltage level, and here it is 1 to 11 corresponding to 11 levels (11 patch sets). Further, the voltage value of each voltage level is assumed to be Vtr(n). In addition, each current value detected when applying a voltage of each voltage level is applied to the relationship (quadratic equation) between voltage and current when there is no recording material S in the secondary transfer portion N acquired in S3. Let the calculated voltage value be Vb(n). At this time, the recording material shared voltage Vp(n) at each voltage level is calculated by the following formula:
Vp(n)=Vtr(n)-Vb(n)
It is expressed as
Next, the output chart is supplied to the
D(n):輝度分散値
Kave:
D(n)=1/N×Σ{B(m)-Kave}2
Kave=1/N×Σ{B(m)}
Following the brightness average value of the blue
D(n): Luminance variance value Kave: Luminance average value of black solid patch D(n) = 1/N x Σ {B(m) - Kave} 2
Kave=1/N×Σ{B(m)}
Next, the control unit 30 (adjustment process unit 31d) calculates an adjustment value Na that minimizes the average brightness value of the blue solid patch acquired in S8 (S10). In the case of the relationship between the adjustment value and the average brightness value of the blue solid patch in FIG. 10, the brightness decreases as the adjustment value increases from the adjustment value -5 to +2. In this adjustment value range, the electric field necessary to transfer a solid blue patch is insufficient, and the larger the adjustment value is, the better the transferability of the blue solid is. The brightness average value at adjustment values +3 to +4, which are further increased adjustment values, is the lowest. If the secondary transfer voltage is larger than necessary, the risk of image defects due to discharge phenomena such as "breakthrough" which will be described later increases, so in this example, the smaller of the adjustment values +3 to +4 is set to The adjustment value Na is selected to give the lowest average brightness value.
Next, the control unit 30 (adjustment process unit 31d) determines whether or not "throughput" has occurred in the adjustment value selected in S10 (S11). A method for determining whether "through-through" has occurred will be explained using FIGS. 12 and 13. FIG. 12 is a graph showing the relationship between the occurrence of "throughout" and the luminance dispersion value of a solid black patch when an image is outputted while changing the secondary transfer voltage using the
With reference to FIG. 13, the determination as to whether or not "penetration" has occurred in S11 will be further explained. The slope of the relationship between the adjustment value based on the chart reading result and the brightness dispersion value of the black solid patch is calculated near the adjustment value Na at which the average brightness value of the blue solid patch becomes the minimum. Specifically, in this embodiment, the following adjustment values are used. First, it is the "adjustment value (Na) at which the average luminance value of the blue solid patch calculated in S10 is the minimum value". Further, it is "an adjustment value (Na-1) that is one smaller than the adjustment value (Na) calculated in S10". Moreover, it is "an adjustment value (Na+1) that is one larger than the adjustment value (Na) calculated in S10". The control unit 30 (adjustment process unit 31d) calculates the slope of the approximate straight line l indicating the relationship between the adjustment value and the brightness dispersion value of the black solid patch using the least squares method within the above adjustment value range. Then, if the slope of the approximate straight line l is larger than the slope of the straight line L serving as the above-mentioned threshold value, the
Next, the control unit 30 (adjustment process unit 31d) corrects the adjustment value if it is determined in S11 that “through-through” has occurred (“Yes”) (S12). FIG. 14 shows the recording material sharing voltage of the secondary transfer voltage when checking an image formed on the recording material S in the NL environment (temperature 23° C.,
Specifically, in this embodiment, the control unit 30 (adjustment process unit 31d) determines the upper limit set according to the information regarding the thickness of the recording material S from the recording material shared voltage Vp(n) acquired in S6. Extract those that do not exceed the value. In this embodiment, information regarding the thickness of the recording material S on the market (here, tsubo The relationship between the maximum value of the recording material shared voltage Vp(n) and the upper limit of the recording material shared voltage Vp(n) has been investigated in advance. The relationship between the type of recording material S and the recording material shared voltage Vp(n) is stored in the
Next, the control section 30 (adjustment process section 31d) causes the adjustment value Na or Na' calculated so far to be displayed on the setting screen 90 (voltage setting section 91) as shown in FIG. 9 on the
Next, the processing after S14' when it is determined in S5 that the paper is not low resistance paper ("No") will be described.
In this embodiment, the operator can determine whether the displayed adjustment values are acceptable based on the display contents of the
The control unit 30 (adjustment process unit 31d) performs the following when the adjustment value is changed. In other words, it specifies that the control of the secondary transfer voltage during image formation (secondary transfer) for subsequent jobs using the type of recording material S for which the adjustment mode was performed is to be switched from constant voltage control to constant current control. The information is stored in the RAM 33 (or the image forming process section 31c). At the same time, the current value detected by the patch section corresponding to the adjustment value input by the operator is stored in the RAM 33 (or the secondary transfer current storage section/
The effects of changing the secondary transfer voltage control from constant voltage control to constant current control when passing low-resistance paper will be described in detail later.
Here, in this embodiment, when the
Note that when determining the amount of adjustment of the secondary transfer voltage setting based only on the average brightness value of the patch, the average patch brightness value may become minimum at the upper limit of the recording material shared voltage, and "break through" may occur. There is a concern to determine the amount of adjustment that may occur. On the other hand, according to the present embodiment, it is possible to avoid adjustment amounts that may cause "throughput" and determine an appropriate adjustment amount.
Further, the information regarding the upper limit value of the recording material shared voltage Vp(n) used in S12 described above is not limited to being set as table data as in this embodiment. For example, a relational expression indicating the relationship between information regarding the thickness of the recording material S and the recording material shared voltage Vp(n) at which "piercing" is likely to occur can be determined in advance and stored in the
Further, the information regarding the thickness of the recording material S is not limited to being categorized by the type of recording material S. For example, in S1 described above, the operator can directly input values related to the thickness of the recording material S, such as the thickness and basis weight. In addition, in the step corresponding to S1 described above, values related to the thickness such as the thickness and basis weight of the recording material S are measured by a measuring means that measures values related to the thickness such as the thickness and basis weight of the recording material S. You may obtain it. As the measuring means, for example, a known thickness sensor using ultrasonic waves can be provided upstream of the secondary transfer portion N in the process advancing direction of the recording material S.
Further, in this embodiment, blue and black patches are used as patches for obtaining the brightness average value and the brightness variance value, but the present invention is not limited to this. For example, instead of blue, secondary colors such as red or green can be used, or single solid colors of yellow, magenta, cyan, and black can be used.
Furthermore, in this embodiment, the adjustment mode is executed by an operation performed by the operator via the
Furthermore, in this embodiment, information regarding the electrical resistance of the secondary transfer portion N when there is no recording material S in the secondary transfer portion N after starting the adjustment mode was acquired. Thereby, it is possible to obtain information regarding the electrical resistance of the secondary transfer portion N that is more suitable for the situation when determining the adjustment amount of the secondary transfer voltage setting. However, if it is permissible from the viewpoint of accuracy, for example, the result of ATVC control at the start of the job immediately before (most recent) execution of the adjustment mode may be used as information regarding the electrical resistance of the secondary transfer section N. Good too.
Further, in this embodiment, the adjustment mode is controlled using the display of the adjustment value corresponding to the adjustment amount ΔV, but it may be controlled using the display of the adjustment amount ΔV more directly.
In addition, in this example, when obtaining the relationship between voltage and current, the current value that flowed when a predetermined voltage was supplied was detected, but the voltage value that occurred when a predetermined current value was supplied was detected. May be detected.
Furthermore, the rank itself used to determine whether "through-through" has occurred is based on visual evaluation by the inventors, and may be based on a different standard. Furthermore, the method of determining whether "breakthrough" has occurred using the luminance dispersion value is not limited to the method of this embodiment. For example, it may be determined based on the difference in luminance dispersion between previous and subsequent adjustment values instead of the slope. is also possible. Furthermore, in this embodiment, the adjustment values used for determination are Na-1, Na, and Na+1, but adjustment values other than these three points may also be used.
As described above, according to the present embodiment, in a configuration including an adjustment mode that outputs a chart on which patches are formed and adjusts the settings of the secondary transfer voltage, the settings of the secondary transfer voltage can be adjusted more appropriately. becomes possible.
7. Effects of switching to constant current control when passing low-resistance paper Next, the effects of switching the control of the secondary transfer voltage from constant-voltage control to constant-current control when passing low-resistance paper will be described.
FIG. 22 shows the applied voltage, the current flowing to the inner
On the other hand, FIG. 23 shows the applied voltage, the current flowing through the secondary transfer
Typical paper types for which constant voltage control is used to control the secondary transfer voltage include thin paper, plain paper, thick paper, coated paper, colored paper, Japanese paper, recycled paper, tab paper, postcards, envelopes, and embossed paper. can be mentioned. Further, typical paper types for which it is desired to switch the control of the secondary transfer voltage to constant current control include special paper having a metal layer (such as vapor-deposited paper), paper containing carbon, and the like.
As described above, in the present embodiment, the
In this embodiment, the
As described above, according to this embodiment, even when the recording material S used for image formation is paper with such low resistance that transfer current leaks through the recording material S, the adjustment mode can be executed. By doing so, the control of the secondary transfer voltage for the recording material S can be easily switched to constant current control suitable for low resistance paper. Therefore, after execution of the adjustment mode, the secondary transfer performance to the low resistance paper can be improved. Therefore, according to this embodiment, it is possible to easily perform transfer without increasing the operational load on the operator, which is advantageous in transferability to low-resistance paper where the transfer current can flow into members existing in the conveyance path of the recording material S. It becomes possible to set voltage control.

[Example 2]
Next, other embodiments of the present invention will be described. The basic configuration and operation of the image forming apparatus of this embodiment are the same as those of the image forming apparatus of the first embodiment. Therefore, in the image forming apparatus of this embodiment, elements having the same or corresponding functions or configurations as those of the image forming apparatus of
In
FIG. 18 is a flowchart showing an outline of the procedure of the adjustment mode in this embodiment. Note that in the procedure shown in FIG. 18, the same steps as those in the adjustment mode of the first embodiment shown in FIG. 8 are given the same step numbers as in FIG. 8, and the description thereof will be omitted as appropriate.
As in the first embodiment, the control unit 30 (adjustment process unit 31d) determines the relationship between voltage and current according to the electrical resistance of the secondary transfer unit N and the recording material S, based on the detection results of current for 11 levels of voltage. IV curve) is obtained (S5). The control unit 30 (adjustment process unit 31d) writes information on the relationship between this voltage and current into the RAM 33 (or adjustment process unit 31d). However, in this embodiment, at this time, the control unit 30 (adjustment process unit 31d) writes only the following relationship. In other words, when outputting a chart, among the current values detected at the patch section when voltages of each voltage level are applied, the same voltage is obtained from the IV curve obtained when there is no recording material S in the secondary transfer section N in S3. This is the relationship between a current value that is less than 1.2 times the current value corresponding to , and a corresponding voltage value. In other words, the control unit 30 (adjustment process unit 31d) controls the voltage level (patch) classification detected when no current flows into the contact member that contacts the recording material S other than the secondary transfer unit N. Only information indicating the relationship between voltage and current shall be written. The control unit 30 (adjustment process unit 31d) uses the written voltage as the voltage and current information regarding the voltage level (patch) section in which a current value of 1.2 times or more when the recording material S is not present is detected. It is generated by interpolation using linear interpolation or the like based on the current information. Note that the current when the recording material S is in the secondary transfer section N can typically be detected by detecting the current during patch transfer (at the patch section), but depending on the voltage level, it is necessary to detect the current when there is no toner before or after the patch. The detection may be performed in the recording material S portion.
Then, the control unit (adjustment process unit 31d) obtains the recording material shared voltage Vp(n) at each voltage level from the following information (S6'). In other words, the relationship (quadratic equation) between the voltage and current when there is a recording material S in the secondary transfer area N obtained in S5, and the voltage when there is no recording material S in the secondary transfer area N obtained in S3. and the relationship (quadratic equation) with the current. As described above, in this embodiment, the relationship (quadratic equation) between the voltage and current when the recording material S is present in the secondary transfer portion N acquired in S5 is the same as the detection result (when the recording material S is not present). 1.2 times)) and the interpolation result (1.2 times or more when there is no recording material S). Here, n indicates each voltage level, and here it is 1 to 11 corresponding to 11 levels (11 patch sets). Further, the voltage value of each voltage level is assumed to be Vtr(n). In addition, each current value detected when applying a voltage of each voltage level is applied to the relationship (quadratic equation) between voltage and current when there is no recording material S in the secondary transfer portion N obtained in S3. Let the calculated voltage value be Vb(n). At this time, the recording material shared voltage Vp(n) at each voltage level is calculated by the following formula:

The processing from S9' to S13' in FIG. 18 is the same as the processing from S9 to S13 for normal paper described in Example 1 using FIG. 8, so the description thereof will be omitted.
The operator can determine whether or not the displayed adjustment values are acceptable based on the display contents of the
The control unit 30 (adjustment process unit 31d) performs the following when the adjustment value is changed. In other words, it specifies that the control of the secondary transfer voltage during image formation (secondary transfer) for subsequent jobs using the type of recording material S for which the adjustment mode was performed is to be switched from constant voltage control to constant current control. The information is stored in the RAM 33 (or the image forming process unit 31c). At the same time, the current value (or complemented current value) detected by the patch section corresponding to the adjustment value input by the operator is stored in the RAM 33 (or secondary transfer current storage section/calculation section) as the target current in the constant current control. 31g) (S15'). On the other hand, when the determination unit 94 is operated without changing the adjustment value, the control unit 30 (adjustment process unit 31d) performs the following procedure. At the same time, the current value detected at the patch portion with the smallest average luminance value calculated in S8' is stored in the RAM 33 (or the secondary transfer current storage unit/
Note that when the
As described above, in this embodiment, when determining to perform constant current control of the transfer voltage when transferring a toner image onto a predetermined type of recording material S, the
As explained above, according to this embodiment, the same effects as in the first embodiment can be obtained. Further, according to this embodiment, in the adjustment mode, the optimum transfer current value for low resistance paper can be determined and presented to the operator, and the target current in constant current control of the secondary transfer voltage can be determined more appropriately. It becomes possible to set.
[others]
Although the present invention has been described above with reference to specific examples, the present invention is not limited to the above-mentioned examples.
Constant current control of the secondary transfer voltage when transferring a toner image means constant current control during the entire period when the recording material passes through the secondary transfer section, as well as constant current control during the entire period when the recording material passes through the secondary transfer section. It also includes performing constant current control during a part of the period. For example, while an area other than the image forming area (for example, a margin area) in the conveyance direction of the recording material is passing through the secondary transfer section, or when a part of the image forming area is passing through the secondary transfer section. There may be a period during which the secondary transfer voltage is controlled at a constant voltage.
Furthermore, the method for determining low resistance paper in the adjustment mode is not limited to the method in the above embodiment. For example, in the adjustment mode, in addition to the current value and voltage value when voltage is applied to the secondary transfer section when the recording material that forms the chart is in the secondary transfer section, the electrical resistance of the recording material determined based on these values. Low resistance paper can be determined based on the value.
An example of a method for determining low resistance paper in the adjustment mode will be further described. For example, the
Furthermore, when a current flows into the contact member through the low-resistance paper (typically the recording material S having a metal layer), it is detected when a predetermined voltage is applied to the secondary transfer
Further, as shown in FIG. 24, the current detection unit 151 (corresponding to the above-described
In addition, in each of the above-mentioned methods, instead of or in addition to detecting that the paper is a low-resistance paper, the conditions for determining the magnitude relationship of the detection result with respect to the threshold value are changed as appropriate to detect the detection of normal paper (such as plain paper). It is also possible to detect that it is (not a low resistance paper).
Further, in the above-described embodiment, the adjustment value presented by the control unit is allowed to be changed by the operator, but the adjustment value may not be changed.
Further, in the above embodiment, the operator sets the chart output from the image forming apparatus in the adjustment mode on the image reading device and reads the chart, but the present invention is not limited to this. For example, when the chart is output from the image forming apparatus, the chart may be read by an inline image reading means.
Further, control of the secondary transfer voltage is not limited to setting to constant voltage control or constant current control for each job. For example, in a job in which a plurality of paper types coexist, control of the secondary transfer voltage can be changed to constant current control or constant voltage control within the job depending on the paper type of each recording material.
