Abstract
Description
TECHNICAL FIELD The present invention relates to a membrane electrode assembly, a polymer electrolyte fuel cell, and a method for producing a membrane electrode assembly.
A polymer electrolyte fuel cell includes a membrane electrode assembly. A membrane electrode assembly includes a fuel electrode, an oxygen electrode, and a polymer electrolyte membrane sandwiched between the fuel electrode and the oxygen electrode. The fuel electrode and the oxygen electrode each have a gas diffusion layer and an electrode catalyst layer. The electrode catalyst layer includes a catalyst material, a carrier, and a polymer electrolyte.
Hydrogen contained in the fuel gas flows from the gas diffusion layer of the fuel electrode to the electrode catalyst layer of the fuel electrode. Hydrogen that has flowed into the electrode catalyst layer is oxidized to produce protons and electrons. Protons reach the electrode catalyst layer of the oxygen electrode through the polymer electrolyte of the fuel electrode and the polymer electrolyte membrane. The electrons reach the electrode catalyst layer of the oxygen electrode through the carrier of the anode and an external circuit. Oxygen contained in the oxidant gas reacts with protons and electrons in the electrode catalyst layer of the oxygen electrode, thereby producing water.
Substances involved in the electrode reaction flow through the pores of the electrode catalyst layer. For example, the fuel gas flows through the pores of the anode and reaches the reaction field of the anode. Water for conducting protons flows through the pores of the anode and reaches the polymer electrolyte membrane. The oxidant gas reaches the reaction field of the oxygen electrode through the pores of the oxygen electrode. Water produced at the oxygen electrode is discharged from the oxygen electrode through the pores of the oxygen electrode.
Retention of excess water in the electrode catalyst layer hinders movement of substances involved in cell reactions. Smooth transport of substances through pores suppresses the retention of excess water and suppresses the occurrence of flooding (see, for example, Patent Documents 1 to 4). On the other hand, the excellent proton conductivity of the polymer electrolyte membrane requires the polymer electrolyte membrane to have an appropriate moisture content. The water content is the ratio of the required weight of water to the weight of the polymer electrolyte membrane when dry. A humidity control film interposed between an electrode catalyst layer and a gas diffusion layer suppresses a decrease in moisture content under low humidification conditions and suppresses drying up of a polymer electrolyte membrane (see, for example, Patent Document 5). The groove structure interposed between the electrode catalyst layer and the polymer electrolyte membrane also suppresses the decrease in moisture content under low humidification conditions and suppresses drying up of the polymer electrolyte membrane (see, for example, Patent Document 6). .
Between (i) suppression of retention of excess water and (ii) suppression of decrease in moisture content, a trade-off relationship is likely to be established in which one effect is increased and the other effect is decreased. . Achieving compatibility between (i) suppression of retention of surplus water and (ii) suppression of decrease in water content by means of a structure other than the humidity control film and the groove structure is a condition for use of polymer electrolyte fuel cells with high power generation performance. can be further expanded to accelerate the spread of polymer electrolyte fuel cells.
