This application claims priority to US Provisional Patent Application No. 62 / 011,358, filed June 12, 2014, and US Patent Application No. 14 / 736,159, filed June 10, 2015. All of which are hereby incorporated by reference in their entirety for all purposes.
The present invention relates generally to lithium ion electrochemical cells, and more specifically to materials and methods for prelithiation of the same.
A lithium ion battery stores energy by moving a plurality of lithium ions from the positive electrode to the negative electrode, and the battery releases energy by moving a plurality of lithium ions from the negative electrode to the positive electrode. Some of the plurality of lithium ions in the battery participate in side reactions that prevent the lithium ions from contributing to the battery's energy storage capacity. For example, passivation of the electrolyte membrane formed on the negative electrode and the positive electrode is often referred to as a solid electrolyte interface (SEI) membrane and is the result of a side reaction that consumes lithium. Other phenomena that can reduce the amount of lithium available for energy storage include reactions such as permanent capture of lithium ions in the negative electrode. This can occur when the battery voltage is prevented from becoming low enough to release all of the lithium stored in the negative electrode during discharge.
Typically, such side reactions have the greatest impact on the initial cycle of the battery, and the efficiency of the initial cycle is typically reduced to 70% -95% for various battery chemistries. Side reactions continue throughout the cycle life of the battery, but in most applications, efficiency after the initial cycle is much higher than 99%. The lithium ion reaction in the side reaction has the undesirable effect of reducing the initial capacity of the battery and shortening the cycle life of the battery.
Coulomb efficiency is the ratio of discharge capacity to charge capacity in a particular cycle. Silicon-based negative electrodes are desirable because they can store more lithium per unit weight than carbon-based negative electrodes, and usually have low Coulomb efficiency in the initial cycle due to side reactions and lithium scavenging effects.
Typically, the lithium inventory in a lithium ion battery is completely supplied by a lithium-containing cathode active material. Additional positive electrode materials can be added to the battery to compensate for side reactions and other phenomena that consume and trap multiple lithium ions. Most positive electrodes store lithium per unit mass lower than most negative electrodes and reduce the energy density of the battery by adding additional positive electrode materials.

The foregoing aspects and others will be readily understood by those skilled in the art from the following description of exemplary embodiments, when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings.
Prelithiation is a process in which lithium is added to the negative electrode before battery manufacture is complete, and more lithium is inserted into the battery than is contained in the positive electrode. The plurality of negative electrodes can be prelithiated prior to battery assembly. For example, lithium metal can be mixed with the active material when the electrode is manufactured, but this can add cost and make the processing and handling of the electrode more difficult. Multiple anodes can also be pre-lithiated after battery assembly. For example, the lithium metal electrode can be temporarily inserted into the battery in the electrochemical circuit along with the negative electrode. Current can be passed between the lithium metal electrode and the negative electrode to prelithiate the negative electrode. This is not particularly practical in several designs of commercial batteries that use jellyroll electrodes or laminated electrodes. This is because most of the negative electrodes are not easily accessible.
Lithium in multiple anodes has high thermodynamic activity and is therefore very reactive and potentially dangerous to handle. Some prelithiation methods are performed prior to battery assembly. However, due to problems with lithium, multiple prelithiated electrodes prior to battery assembly add additional safety risks and handling costs. Multiple methods of prelithiating multiple batteries with spare electrodes after battery assembly cannot achieve sufficient current distribution to uniformly store charge in multilayer (commercial) batteries. Various embodiments of the present invention disclosed herein describe a cost effective and practical prelithiation method that can be implemented in a battery assembled without using a spare electrode.
In some embodiments, an economical, easily manufacturable and expandable approach is provided that prelithiates the negative electrode in multiple Li-ion batteries. One or more of the following advantages may be in the multiple solutions, methods, and electrochemical cells described herein. In certain embodiments, prelithiation using the solutions disclosed herein may be safer than using lithium metal powder. In certain embodiments, prelithiation can be performed in a fairly simple manner. This is less expensive and easier to implement than processes that are pre-lithiated prior to battery assembly (eg, by separate electroplating baths or by transferring lithium from the lithium foil) or using spare electrodes. In certain embodiments, the multiple prelithiation solutions and methods described herein can be implemented with a wide variety of anode architectures, and thus the anode architecture is not limited by the prelithiation process.

Used as a thing. The term “pre-lithiated solution” may be used interchangeably with the term “pre-lithiated electrolyte”. The term “standard electrolyte” is used to mean an electrolyte that contains a Li ion conducting salt and is used in the normal cycle operation of an electrochemical cell. In some embodiments, a prelithiated solution comprising a Li ion conducting salt can also be implemented as a standard electrolyte.
Although this specification primarily refers to a plurality of lithium ion batteries, a plurality of prelithiation solutions and methods are advantageously improved by adding lithium to one of the plurality of electrodes, or It can be used with any electrochemical cell that can be enabled. These can include capacitors, supercapacitors, and other storage devices.
In one embodiment of the present invention, an electrolyte solution specifically manufactured for prelithiation is described. The pre-lithiated solution contains a lithium salt dissolved in a solvent compatible with a plurality of lithium ion electrode materials or a plurality of solvents such as those listed below. In one configuration, the solvent or solvents are stable over the entire voltage range in the prelithiation process. In another configuration, the solvent or solvents are oxidized at the cathode. Oxidation does not produce reaction products that are detrimental to the effects of either the prelithiation process or normal battery operation. It is preferred that the solvent or solvents are not reduced at the anode. Such a reaction can compete with the lithium insertion process and adversely affect prelithiation.
The prelithiated solution can be used to prelithiate the anode in a lithium ion electrochemical cell such as that shown in the schematic of FIG. The
In one embodiment, the cathode does not contain lithium. In this case, there is more freedom in selecting the voltage for prelithiation. This is because there is no concern about removing lithium from the cathode.
In one configuration, prelithiation is performed at room temperature. It may be desirable to increase the temperature to increase the solubility of the salt or improve the dynamics of the process. It may not be desirable to raise the temperature to such an extent that the solvent evaporates or a plurality of other components of the battery, such as the separator, begin to break. In one configuration, prelithiation is performed at a temperature of about 30 ° C to 100 ° C, or about 30 ° C to 75 ° C.

According to various embodiments, the pre-lithiated solution contains a pre-lithiated salt, which is a lithium salt that decomposes at a voltage lower than the battery operating voltage. In various embodiments, the prelithiated solution has 0.01% to 25 wt% lithium. For example, the pre-lithiated solution may have 10% to 25% lithium, or about 10-20% lithium, or 10% to 15% lithium. In another example, the prelithiated solution has 0.01 to 15 wt% lithium, or 0.01 to 10 wt% lithium. It will be appreciated that such concentrations can be achieved by an appropriate combination of lithium salt content and salt solubility in a solvent or solvents.
The amount of lithium also depends on whether the prelithiated solution is used as a standard operating electrolyte for electrochemical cells. As described below, in some embodiments, the pre-lithiated solution acts as or is mixed with an electrolyte that includes one or more Li-containing ion conducting electrolyte salts. In several such embodiments, the pre-lithiated solution may have 5% to 25 wt% lithium. In embodiments where the pre-lithiated solution does not include a typical electrolyte salt, the pre-lithiated solution can have 0.01% to 10% wt lithium.
The Li salt for prelithiation is a lithium source for the negative electrode. This differs from the Li salt used in typical Li-ion battery electrolytes, which are stable ionic conductors that are not designed to be consumed during battery operation. In contrast, a pre-lithiated Li salt is one in which Li decomposes at multiple voltages lower than the voltage leaving the cathode (usually V 2 ).
In general, any such lithium salt that can be dissolved in a solvent compatible with the process can be used. Examples of R in R 3 Li include methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl, tert-butyl, biphenyl, naphthyl, and combinations thereof. Note that these salts are not normally found in lithium ion battery electrolytes because they decompose at typical battery operating voltages. Furthermore, at higher voltages decompose Li salt (including those that may be found in the Li-ion battery electrolyte) may be used in certain applications where the battery operating voltage V 2 becomes higher.

Thus, the prelithiated electrolyte can have two types of salts. That is, one or more prelithiated salts, as well as one or more ion conducting salts, which are more unstable than ion conducting salts and decompose at lower voltages. It should be understood that while the prelithiated salt is generally consumed during the prelithiated process, the ion conducting salt remains in the prelithiated electrolyte during the next battery cycle that conducts multiple ions. Also, ion conducting salts can be used in situations where the electrolyte changes after prelithiation to promote conduction during prelithiation.

FIG. 3 is a process flow diagram illustrating certain operations in an example prelithiation method using a prelithiation solution as described herein. At 310, a plurality of components of the electrochemical cell are assembled. These components generally include an anode, a cathode, and a separator. Multiple other components of the battery may or may not be added at 310. This may depend, in part, on whether the battery is sealed in the package after the prelithiation solution has been added.
At 320, a prelithiated solution containing a lithium salt and solvent according to an embodiment of the invention is added to the battery. Sufficient solution can be added so that the separator is saturated. The lithium salt is a prelithiated salt as described above. According to various embodiments, the pre-lithiated solution may also contain one or more ion conducting salts as described above. In some embodiments, the pre-lithiated solution can be mixed with a standard electrolyte.
At 330, pre-lithiated voltage V 1 is applied between the anode and the cathode. The pre-lithiation voltage V 1 is sufficient to cause the lithium salt to undergo an electrochemical dissociation reaction at the cathode. In some embodiments, the pre-lithiation voltage V 1 is not high enough for the solvent in the pre-lithiation solution to oxidize. In another configuration, the solvent can be oxidized as long as no harmful reaction products are present.
The applied voltage V 1 can be constant or can vary. In
In some embodiments, the prelithiated salt is consumed during the prelithiation protocol and prior to any formation cycle. However, as described above, in some embodiments, prelithiation can be continued or performed as a whole during the formation cycle or initial charge of the battery. The prelithiated salt may be consumed during the prelithiation protocol. During battery formation, the SEI layer can be formed on the negative electrode. An example of a battery formation cycle protocol can be found in US Pat. No. 8,801,810, which is incorporated herein by reference for purposes of illustrating the formation cycle, although any suitable protocol may be used. . When used, prelithiated salts are usually consumed during the prelithiation protocol. In some embodiments, the electrolyte is replaced after the prelithiation formation protocol is performed.
In some embodiments, an
In
In embodiments where the prelithiated solvent is removed, some residual amount of salt or solvent may be present in the sealed battery. Thus, it is particularly useful when the pre-lithiated salt and solvent are selected to allow or work with residual amounts of salt or solvent from which the battery is not removed. In 360, the battery fully assembled, can be operated in the specified voltage V 2. As described above, according to various embodiments, at least a portion (and in some embodiments all) of
In some embodiments, the battery is immediately charged to its operating voltage after the prelithiation protocol. Several measures can be taken to mitigate the effects of any prelithiated by-products. These can include venting and replacing the prelithiated solution with electrolyte. When vented, the battery can be in an environment with low moisture content.
Pre lithiated voltages V 1 may be chosen carefully. As described above, in some embodiments, V 1 is selected that is lower than the battery operating voltage V 2 . In embodiments where V 1 is lower than V 2 , lithium is not removed from the positive electrode. This is because the salt decomposes at a voltage lower than the voltage at which the positive electrode can release lithium. During prelithiation, the battery voltage is maintained below the voltage at which the cathode can release lithium, so that current can flow and the negative electrode can be prelithiated without removing lithium from the positive electrode. However, in some embodiments, prelithiation can proceed during the initial charge of the battery. For example, V 1 can be continuously ramped from V 0 (or other starting voltage) to V 2 .
Lithium is inserted into the anode when multiple lithium positive ions of the prelithiated salt are reduced at the anode. In one configuration, multiple other reaction products, such as gases, are produced when multiple anions oxidize at the cathode. Such gas can be released from the battery. In other configurations, there may be other reaction products, such as liquid soluble products remaining in solution. These can be removed from the battery when the prelithiated electrolyte is removed. When inert, multiple by-products may remain in solution when used as a standard electrolyte, rather than removing the prelithiated electrolyte.
The multiple methods and materials of prelithiation described herein can be useful in multiple battery configurations with several layers of stacked electrodes or jelly roll electrodes. The pre-lithiated solution can enter the pre-assembled battery and penetrate whenever the electrolyte can penetrate. There is no obstacle to prelithiation in any battery designed to undergo cycling. The prelithiation method disclosed herein avoids some of the safety and cost issues that make it difficult to use other prelithiation methods in mass production. The distribution of current through the battery is very uniform. This is because the cathode of the battery itself is used in the circuit instead of using the spare electrode located outside the electrode stack. Further, in some embodiments, the cathode composition does not change during prelithiation. This is because lithium ions are not removed from the cathode in the process.

FIG. 4A is a graph showing the capacity supplied to carbon / lithium cobalt oxide (LCO) cells 1-3 in a constant current / constant voltage (CC / CV) charging protocol using a prelithiated solution. For comparison, batteries 4-6 are charged with the same protocol using a conventional electrolyte that does not use a prelithiated salt.
FIG. 4B is a graph showing the carbon anode potential (vs. Li / Li +) after the prelithiation protocol is complete. Cells 1-3 used a prelithiated solution formulation, and a negative electrode potential of less than 250 mV indicates that a substantial amount of lithium was transferred to the material during prelithiation. In contrast, batteries 4-6 do not use a pre-lithiation solution formulation and have a negative electrode potential greater than 1500 mV, which is that multiple graphite electrodes store very little lithium after the pre-lithiation protocol. Indicates that
The prelithiation formulation increases the amount of charge that passes through the cell at a voltage that is less than the voltage required to extract lithium from the cathode. That is, the prelithiated salt is decomposed and the lithium prelithiates the anode. Prelithiation is confirmed by the low potential reached by the anode in multiple batteries using prelithiation formulations.
すなわち、左軸におけるEwe(カソード電圧対Liの基準)対時間、Ece(アノード電圧)対時間、およびEwe‐Ece(電池電圧)対時間、ならびに右軸におけるQ‐Qo(システムを通る電荷)および電流(ライン510)である。 A prelithiation formation charging protocol is shown in FIG. The Si anode / LCO cathode cell was filled with a prelithiated electrolyte. The prelithiated electrolyte was a standard Li ion electrolyte of carbonate type solvent and LiPF 6 salt, to which prelithiated salt and additives were added. Constant current is applied in four charging stages divided into constant voltage stages of 3.65, 3.85, 4.05, and 4.25V, the latter being the limit of the charging voltage of the battery. The following values are shown in the plot: Ewe (cathode voltage vs. Li) vs. time, Ece (anode voltage) vs. time, and Ewe-Ece (battery voltage) vs. time on the left axis, and Q-Qo (charge through the system) and Current (line 510).
When at the first voltage held at 3.65V, it can be observed that the current (line 510) first rises to a peak and falls. The initial rise indicates that additional charge is injected into the system at a voltage that is too low for lithium to be extracted from the cathode. This additional charge increases battery capacity and degrades the prelithiated salt.
FIG. 6 shows the anode potential versus Li / Li + reference electrode in three electrode cells during the first constant current charge (formation) in standard (non-prelithiated) and prelithiated electrolytes as shown. Show. In the presence of the prelithiated electrolyte, additional charge is required to reduce the voltage, in other words, it is clear that further reactions occur at multiple electrodes before typical charging begins. is there.
Positive electrode material]
In one embodiment of the present invention, any of a number of lithium-containing compounds can be used. In certain embodiments, the active material may be in the form of LiMO 2. Where M is a metal such as LiCoO 2 , LiNiO 2 , and LiMnO 2 . In general, lithium cobaltate (LiCoO 2 ) is a material used for small batteries, but it is also one of the most expensive. Cobalt in LiCoO 2 can be partially substituted with Sn, Mg, Fe, Ti, Al, Zr, Cr, V, Ga, Zn, or Cu. Lithium nickelate (LiNiO 2 ) does not tend to run as hot as LiCoO 2 but is still expensive. Compared because lithium manganate (LiMnO 2 ) is the cheapest in the traditional family of materials, and its three-dimensional crystal structure provides a larger surface area, thereby allowing greater ion flux between multiple electrodes High power. Here, lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO 4 ) is also used commercially as the positive electrode active material.
