外形が円盤形などの回転体形状となされた照明器具は、通常、器具本体、カバー、ソケットその他の各部品が相互に嵌合しうる同心円状に形成され、それらが爪や溝などの係合手段を介して係合しうるように構成されている。
商品価値を高めるため、枠材を別部品として形成し、器具本体に取り付ける場合にも同様の構成となる。
天井に取り付ける照明の場合、照明器具の重量には限界があり、できるだけ軽量にしなければならない。そのため、本来の機能とは関係のない枠材はできるだけ軽量に形成され、厚さが薄くなるためそれ自体の剛性は低い。
天井に取り付ける照明器具においては、地震による振動などで取り付けた部品の嵌合が外れて落下する可能性があり危険であるので、従来は各部品はねじ止めにより固定されている。
