Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a field emission light source (hereinafter referred to as FEL) that can be used for illumination and display.
The FEL uses light emission of a phosphor excited by electron beam irradiation, that is, cathode luminescence, like a vacuum fluorescent display or a cathode ray tube, but a filament as an electron emission source. Instead, it is characterized by the use of a field electron-emitting device that emits electrons with a quantum effect.
It is known that when a field electron-emitting device is used, a large current can be taken out without requiring heating of the filament as in a cathode ray tube, so that high-luminance emission can be obtained with low power consumption and high durability. .
As an example of FEL,
The phosphor used in the FEL as disclosed in
In addition, the lifetime of the phosphor is the total amount of incident electrons per unit area incident on the phosphor from the start of light emission until the half-life until the emission intensity is halved, that is, the accumulated charge (C / cm 2 ) is evaluated.
In general phosphors, the accumulated charge amount up to the half-life is high and is about several hundred C / cm 2 .
Therefore, in order to set the half-life to 4000 hours or longer using a general phosphor, it is necessary to set the density of incident electron beams incident on the phosphor to 20 μA / cm 2 or less.
An electron emission film is formed on the cathode electrode, and the electron emission characteristic of the electron emission film is an electric field intensity that brings about an electron emission density of 1 mA / cm 2 (this electric field intensity is also referred to as a threshold electric field intensity). Expressed. The electron emission characteristics (threshold electric field strength) vary depending on the material of the electron emission film. When the electron emission film is nanodiamond / carbon nanowall (ND / CNW), the electron emission is about 0.7 to 1.5 V / μm. When the film is a carbon nanowall, it is about 1.5 to 2.0 V / μm.
Such an electron emission film is formed by exposing the cathode electrode to plasma by a method such as chemical vapor deposition (CVD), and it is possible to adjust the threshold electric field intensity by adjusting the film formation conditions and the like. However, the adjustable range is limited.
Also, when the electron emission film is formed by CVD, if the shape of the cathode electrode is not a flat plate shape and the surface on which the electron emission film is formed has a three-dimensional shape, the film formation cannot be performed uniformly. There is. Therefore, there are certain limitations on the shape of the cathode electrode.
For example, when forming an electron emission film on a cylindrical substrate, if the radius of curvature of the cylinder is too large, the temperature gradient of the substrate also increases accordingly, so the electron emission film may be formed only on a part of the substrate. .
In addition, if the cylindrical substrate is too large in the longitudinal direction, the film-forming property of the electron-emitting film is impaired, and there is a problem that the substrate is likely to be bent due to the thermal history during film formation.
In this case, the electric field strength in the electron emission film on the cathode electrode placed on the cylindrical central axis is 2.94 V / μm as shown in the following formula (1).
On the other hand, in the above example, in order to satisfy the condition of “incident electron beam density of 20 μA / cm 2 or less” required for setting the half-life of the phosphor within a preferable range, the electron emission density is set to 0. It is necessary to set it to 6 mA / cm 2 or less. However, since the electron emission density estimated from the formula (1) is considered to be much higher than 1 mA / cm 2 , there is a problem that the FEL does not have an appropriate half-life under the above conditions.
From equation (1), it is conceivable to increase the cylindrical
The present invention has been made to solve the above-described problem, and the electric field intensity in the electron emission film on the cathode electrode can be set to a low range without changing the electron emission characteristics and applied voltage of the electron emission film. An object of the present invention is to provide a field emission type light source capable of making the density of incident electron beams incident on a phosphor within a preferable range.
The field emission light source of the present invention is embedded in a vacuum sealed container, a bar-shaped support bar disposed along the central axis of the vacuum sealed container, and an outer periphery of the support bar, A cathode electrode provided with one or a plurality of rod-shaped electron emission members, each having an electron emission film formed on a portion exposed from the support rod, wherein the curvature radius of the support rod is D, and the electron emission member When the radius of curvature of r is r, D> r.
In the field emission light source of the present invention, the cathode electrode is composed of a support rod and an electron emission member in which an electron emission film is formed by being embedded in the outer periphery of the support rod. A relationship of D> r is established between the curvature radius D of the support rod and the curvature radius r of the electron emission member.
With such a configuration, the electric field concentration in the field emission film is alleviated due to the large curvature radius of the support rod.
Therefore, the electric field strength in the electron emission film on the cathode electrode can be reduced without changing the electron emission characteristics and applied voltage of the electron emission film.
In the field emission light source of the present invention, it is desirable that h <r, where h is the height of the portion where the electron emission member is exposed from the support rod.
In such a form, since the electron emission member is firmly fixed to the support rod, the electron emission member is prevented from being detached from the support rod.
In the field emission light source of the present invention, it is desirable that the electron emission member is divided into a plurality of pieces in the longitudinal direction of the support rod.
Since the field emission type light source of the present invention has a form in which an electron emission member is embedded in a support rod, a cathode electrode having an arbitrary length can be produced by dividing the electron emission member into a plurality of lines. . Therefore, a long cathode electrode can be manufactured without depending on the length of an apparatus for forming an electron emission film.
In the field emission light source of the present invention, the phosphor layer is formed over the entire circumference of the inner wall of the vacuum sealed container, the number of the electron emission members is plural, and the cross section perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the support rod It is desirable that the angles formed by the centers of two adjacent electron-emitting members and the center of the support rod are all equal.
In such a form, since the electron emission from the electron emission member is made uniform, the light emission becomes uniform.
In the field emission type light source of the present invention, the electric field intensity in the electron emission film on the cathode electrode can be set to a low range without changing the electron emission characteristics and applied voltage of the electron emission film, and the incident light enters the phosphor. The density of the electron beam can be within a preferable range.

In such a form, even if the electron emission member attempts to move outward from the outer peripheral surface of the support rod, the electron emission member cannot be moved because it is caught by the support rod. This prevents the electron emission member from being detached from the support rod.

As a specific example, for example, when a cathode electrode having a length of 150 mm is to be produced, an electron emission film having a length of 50 mm, which is excellent in the film forming property of the electron emission film and hardly causes problems such as bending at the time of film formation. It is preferable to produce a cathode electrode by arranging three emission members.

From this graph, it can be seen that when this electron emission film is used, the electron emission density is 0.6 mA / cm 2 or less when the electric field strength is 1.23 V / μm or less.
In FIG. 4, a line where the electric field intensity at the point F is 1.23 V / μm is indicated by a dotted line.
From the results shown in the above two figures, in order to make the electron emission density 0.6 mA / cm 2 or less, when the applied voltage is 5 kV, the radius of curvature D is about 2.1 mm or more, and the applied voltage is 6 kV. In the case of, it is understood that the radius of curvature D may be set to about 3.2 mm or more.
That is, even when an electron emitting member having a small radius of curvature r = 0.5 mm is used, the support rod and the electron emitting member are combined using a support rod having an appropriate radius of curvature. It can be seen that by using the cathode electrode, the density of the incident electron beam incident on the phosphor in a state where a predetermined voltage is applied can be within a preferable range.

The field emission type

The
The
6A and 6B show an example in which the number of electron-emitting members is one, the number of electron-emitting members in the case of an electron irradiation surface light emission type FEL is as follows. The number is not limited to one, and it is desirable to provide an arbitrary number of electron emitting members at positions where the phosphor layer can be effectively irradiated with an electron beam.
(Other embodiments)
The shape of the support bar is not limited to a substantially cylindrical shape, and may be a bar shape.
For example, the shape may be a polygonal column shape, a semi-columnar shape, an elliptical column shape, or the like.
In the case of the electron beam irradiation surface emitting type FEL, if the radius of curvature of the support rod is large (the support rod is thick), the light extraction efficiency may decrease. For this reason, it is preferable to make the curvature radius of the support rod as small as possible. However, if the curvature radius of the support rod is small, the electric field strength in the electron emission film increases.
Here, when the shape of the support bar is a polygon, the effect of reducing the electric field strength is more effective than when a round bar type support bar having a diameter equal to or larger than the diameter of the circumscribed circle of the polygon is used. Can be demonstrated. For example, if the shape of the support rod is a triangular prism and an electron-emitting device is embedded in the center of each side, the electric field is greatly distorted by the apex of the triangle, so the columnar cathode electrode is thicker than the cylinder with the same diameter as the circumscribed circle of the triangle It is possible to obtain an electric field strength equivalent to that of the case.
From this, in the electron beam irradiation surface light emission type FEL, it is possible to effectively obtain the effect of weakening the electric field strength while suppressing the support rod from being shaded and preventing the light extraction.
Preferable materials for the support rod include aluminum, titanium, aluminum alloy, titanium alloy, and stainless alloy.
These metals are preferable because they have sufficient strength and have a low gas release rate in the vacuum sealing process in the FEL manufacturing process in the vacuum sealed container.
The shape of the electron emission member is not limited to a substantially cylindrical shape or a semi-cylindrical shape, and may be an arbitrary shape.
The electron emission film does not need to be provided on all the portions exposed from the support rod. If the electron beam can be incident on the phosphor layer at an appropriate density, it is provided only on a portion of the exposed portion from the support rod. It may be done.
