Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to an ink circulation system of an ink jet recording apparatus.
An ink jet recording apparatus has a relatively simple configuration and can directly form characters and images on a recording medium, and thus is applied to various fields. Such an apparatus is provided with a recording head for ejecting ink droplets. The recording head generally has a nozzle part composed of a hole through which ink passes and a driving part such as a piezoelectric element or a heating element arranged in the vicinity thereof, and gives a driving signal from the outside to the driving part. Thus, ink is ejected from the nozzle portion onto the recording medium to form an image.
Generally, high definition is required for the formed image. For this reason, the nozzle portion is finely processed to have a diameter of about several tens of μm. On the other hand, with the miniaturization of nozzle processing, foreign matter mixed in the ink causes nozzle clogging.
In order to deal with this problem, for example,
The ink circulation method described above has come to be used in industrial printers and the like that require high speed, reliability, and high availability because of the advantage that the quality of image formation can be made relatively stable. .
However, even in the ink circulation method, before the ink jet recording apparatus is turned on or after it is stopped, minute objects contained in the ink in the recording head may settle down and gather in the vicinity of the nozzle and cause clogging when activated. There is sex.
Further, inks used in such an ink jet recording apparatus are roughly classified into dye-based inks and pigment-based inks from the viewpoint of colorants. Dye-based inks have few problems such as sedimentation of pigments as seen with pigment-based inks, so nozzle clogging is less, but in recent years, pigment-based inks that have advantages such as excellent water resistance and density characteristics have been developed. It is popular.
For example, when such a pigment-based ink is left without stirring, the pigment tends to settle or aggregate. Accordingly, when the ink jet recording apparatus is left unstarted for a long period of time, the pigment in the ink causes aggregation and sedimentation. When the apparatus is driven in a state where aggregation or sedimentation occurs, the nozzles of the recording head are likely to be clogged. For example, if the device is started after being left for a long period of time, such as several weeks to several months, a large amount of the settled pigment will flow into the nozzles of the recording head, causing clogging, and causing the flight of the ejected ink to be bent. There is a risk that.
In addition, precipitation and aggregation of the pigment are not only time-dependent, but also temperature and humidity dependent. For example, if the ink is allowed to stand at a high temperature, the viscosity of the ink decreases, and sedimentation / aggregation easily occurs. Also, drying may occur like water-based ink.
Furthermore, there is a market demand for dealing with a wide variety of inks, such as inks containing pigments with a large specific gravity. For example, in an apparatus capable of forming an image on a transparent resin film, such as an ultraviolet ink jet printer, an image may be formed with white ink on a base on which characters and the like are recorded. For such a white ink pigment, a pigment having a relatively large specific gravity such as TiO 2 is used. Then, the problem of sedimentation of the pigment as described above is likely to occur. Therefore, if the number of types of ink and the number of colors is increased to increase the number of types of pigments and the like, nozzle clogging due to sedimentation of the pigment tends to occur.
As described above, clogging factors vary widely such as elapsed time, temperature / humidity, ink color, and the like, and it is difficult to design ink that does not clog under all environmental conditions.
Accordingly, an object of the present invention is to provide an ink circulation system in which clogging of a recording head is improved and the ejection characteristics of the recording head are good.

A tank, a second tank connected downstream of the first flow path, and a second flow path for circulating the fluid in the second tank to the first tank. An ink circulation system comprising a step of flowing ink with a low content of an object due to sedimentation to the recording head.
According to another embodiment of the present invention, there is provided a recording head having a nozzle for ejecting ink containing a sinking object, a first flow path connected to the nozzle, and a first head connected upstream of the first flow path. 1 tank, a second tank connected downstream of the first flow path, and a second flow path for circulating the fluid of the second tank to the first tank. And a cleaning mode in which the ink speed in the first flow path is adjusted so that the average speed is lower than the settling speed of the object in the first tank or the second tank. An ink circulation system characterized by the above.
Still another embodiment according to the present invention includes a recording head having a nozzle for ejecting ink containing a sinking object and a first flow path connected to the nozzle, and connected upstream of the first flow path. A first tank, a second tank connected downstream of the first flow path, a second flow path for circulating ink in the second tank to the first tank, A first step of flowing ink to the first flow path with the circulation stopped, and a second step of flowing ink to the first flow path with the circulation started, An ink circulation system.

Further, a dispersant for dispersing the pigment is added to the ink. When white ink is used, ink containing titanium oxide as a pigment can be used. When black ink is used, ink containing carbon black as a pigment can be used. Further, an ink containing an antifriction agent and other auxiliary agents can be used.

Further, the ink path 6 includes an

The nozzle 5a of the nozzle portion of the
Since the nozzle part is sufficiently delicate compared to other parts, it functions to draw ink by the capillary force of the nozzle part when the ink is consumed by ink ejection. Accordingly, the ink is appropriately supplied from the
The material of the ink and the nozzle part is appropriately adjusted in compatibility with the ink, and as a result, the pressure by the ink meniscus is a negative pressure of about 2 kPa.

When the main power is turned on, each component of the
If an out of ink or a shortage of recording medium is found, an error is notified, for example, an error is displayed on the
In the standby mode (step S6), the reception port is repeatedly monitored by LAN communication to receive an image recording start signal and image data. If received, image recording processing is performed. Details will be described later.
After the standby mode (step S6), it is determined whether the ink amount in each tank is an appropriate amount (step S7). If the ink amount is insufficient (NO), the process proceeds to ink filling processing (step S5), and ink is supplied from the
Accordingly, when the
Next, the ink filling process (step S5) will be described.
In the initial state, the
If it is determined in step S3 described above that the predetermined amount of ink in each tank is not filled, first, the
Next, the
At the time of initial filling, the amount of ink flowing through the
As the ink level in the
By repeating the above ink filling operation as needed, the amount of ink in the ink circulation path is always adjusted to an appropriate amount.
As shown in FIG. 2, the
The ink liquid level in each tank in FIG. 2 indicates a state where the ink amount is appropriate. Specifically, the
Next, the image recording process in the standby mode (step S6) will be described.
In the standby mode, as shown in FIG. 1, the
In the standby mode, when the
Next, the cleaning process (step S4) when an appropriate amount of ink is already filled in the tank when the power is turned on will be described.
In the first embodiment, the cleaning process is performed only when ink is already filled at the start-up, and is not performed at the initial filling. This is because, during initial filling, an
On the other hand, when ink is already filled in each tank at the time of activation, a cleaning process (step S4) is performed. In the present invention, the cleaning process refers to deposition caused by sedimentation of pigment at a portion where the flow path is relatively narrow and the ink is likely to stay, such as the inside of the nozzle of the
FIG. 6 is a flowchart of the cleaning process of the ink circulation system of the first embodiment. FIG. 7 is a timing chart showing an operation including a cleaning process.
FIG. 8A shows an initial state of the ink circulation path. As shown in FIG. 6, when the cleaning process is started (step S10), it is first determined whether or not there is an abnormality in various sensors (step S11). If an abnormality is detected (YES), nothing is done and the process is terminated and the control is returned to the upper level (step S17). If no abnormality is detected (NO), the
For ink recommended in the product specifications of the printer, the pigment concentration and the like are defined in advance. Therefore, the settling height H4 of the pigment shown in FIG. 8A can be experimentally estimated in advance for the recommended pigment ink. For example, the settling height H4 of the pigment of the ink can be measured by performing a standing experiment for several months. The opening position H5 of the
As a result, as shown in FIG. 8B, the ink (supernatant ink) having a low pigment concentration and a high dispersant concentration, that is, a low pigment content is applied to the
At this time, the flow resistance of the
After a predetermined time, the
During this time, the output of the
Thus, since the gas portion in the
At this time, the
At this time, the pressure by the
Further, as shown in FIG. 8B and FIG. 8C, the pigment settled in the
FIG. 9 shows the pigment concentration of the ink flowing into the
The inside of the
Compared to the cross-sectional areas of the
FIG. 12 is a comparative example for explaining the prior art.
According to the prior art that does not constitute a circulation system, the ink flow is unidirectional. Therefore, the accumulation or aggregation of the pigment flows into the nozzle as it is, and damages the nozzle portion.
Further, according to the prior art, even when an ink circulation system is configured, there is a possibility that pigment deposits flow into the
Furthermore, according to the prior art, the circulation pump is driven simultaneously with the startup of the printer. In addition, there is a tube mounting position that is an ink path provided in a lower portion of the tank.
In this case, as shown in FIG. 12A, when the
Further, as shown in FIG. 12B, when the
On the other hand, in the
According to the first embodiment of the present invention, as shown in FIG. 8A and FIG. 8B, before the circulation pump is driven, ink having a high dispersant concentration is poured into the recording head. It is washed out by high vortex. Furthermore, the flow rate Q1 at this time is adjusted to be smaller than the flow rate Q2 that drives the circulation pump (Q1 <Q2). That is, at the initial stage of startup, the internal ink is allowed to flow without applying an excessive pressure to the recording head (flow rate Q1), and then the drive pump is driven (Q1> Q2), thereby promoting clogging. There is no.
Further, according to the first embodiment of the present invention, nozzle clogging is remarkably improved by causing the ink from which the pigment has been removed by sedimentation to flow first at the start.
Next, an ink circulation system according to a second embodiment of the present invention will be described.
FIG. 10 is a flowchart of the cleaning mode of the ink circulation system of the second embodiment. FIG. 11 is a timing chart showing the behavior of the
In the second embodiment, a mode for cleaning the
In the second embodiment, a timer counter that monitors the time during which the image recording process is idle is provided. The
At startup, the
If received (YES), the setting of the continuous circulation mode of the
If not received (NO), the value T1 of the timer counter increases (T1 = T1 + 1) (step S23). Further, it is determined whether the predetermined time T2 has elapsed (step S24). If it has elapsed (YES), the
The above steps S18 to S26 are repeatedly executed in the standby mode (step S6) in FIG.
Accordingly, when the image recording process becomes idle and these steps are repeatedly executed, the value T1 of the timer counter increases, and when the predetermined time T2, for example, 5 minutes has passed, the continuous circulation mode is changed to the intermittent circulation mode. Switch.
The behavior of the
On the other hand, the driving of the
In the first embodiment of the present invention, since the
The portion where the sedimentation of the pigment tends to proceed is a portion where the flow velocity is low, and is generally a portion where the cross-sectional area of the flow path is large. Accordingly, the places where the sedimentation is likely to proceed are the
When an image recording command is received in this state, the intermittent circulation mode returns to the continuous circulation mode and image recording is started. Accordingly, image recording is performed in a state where the average ink density is restored.
On the other hand, when left in the intermittent circulation mode for a long period of time, in the
In this state, when the user shuts off the main power supply of the printer, the circulation stops with the pigment concentration in the
Thereafter, when the user turns on the printer again, the cleaning mode described in the first embodiment is further executed, so that clogging and contamination of foreign matters are improved.
Further, the average flow velocity in the intermittent circulation mode can be set to a very small value as compared with the continuous circulation mode. For example, it is easy to set the activation time of the
In this case, not only power consumption can be reduced, but also precipitation of the pigment in each tank can be promoted. In other words, since the absolute amount of pigment is reduced in the
The recording medium in the present invention is not limited to inkjet paper, and may be, for example, a resin, a film, or the like. The ink color is not limited to the CKMY color, and for example, white, light cyan, light magenta, or the like may be added.

For example, it can be used for color filter manufacturing equipment, three-dimensional shape forming equipment, image recording equipment, dispensing equipment, precision medical equipment, curing equipment, adhesive equipment, coating film forming equipment, rapid model forming equipment, production equipment, etc. . In addition, a mobile order ink jet printer and a barcode reader can be combined to form an ordering / ordering system for use outdoors or in an airplane. Since fixability and the like are improved, a character recognition system may be configured as an OCR (Optical Character Reader) device.
