Abstract
2Dry reforming upstream of the carbon nanotube production reactor that allows carbon monoxide to be produced on demand and eliminates the need to transport carbon monoxide to the production site or store large amounts of carbon monoxide on site Or, an integrated process of partial oxidation will be described. An apparatus is also provided that enables implementation of such an integration process. Carbon dioxide emissions can be eliminated from the carbon nanotube production process. This can be accomplished by recycling the carbon dioxide byproduct and combining it with the feed to the partial oxidation process.

Another process that can be used produces carbon nanotubes in a reactor cell by contacting metal catalyst particles with an effective amount of carbon-containing gas at a temperature sufficient to catalytically produce carbon nanotubes. Including that. The resulting carbon nanotubes contain a substantial portion of single-walled carbon nanotubes and the metal catalyst particles that can be used contain a Group VIII metal or a Group VIb metal.
CH 4 + CO 2 → 2CO + 2H 2 (III)
More specifically, the dry reforming process shown by reaction (III) typically involves high temperatures, such as between about 700 ° C. and about 1,000 ° C., and high, eg, up to about 150 atmospheres. Performed with pressure. The process may be carried out in the presence of a catalyst. Suitable catalysts can be selected from a variety of known options. For example, the catalyst that can be used may include a noble metal such as platinum, palladium, or rhodium, or a transition base metal such as nickel. This metal may be embedded in a porous carrier such as alumina or zeolite.
In practice, a combination of dry and steam reforming may be used as desired for optimal operability of the reformer unit and to avoid coke formation on the process equipment. One possible pathway for steam reforming can be schematically illustrated by reaction (IV).
CH4+H2O → CO+3H2 (IV)
CH 4 + H 2 O → CO + 3H 2 (IV)
When using steam reforming, the optimum conditions (ie, temperature, pressure, catalyst) used for it may be selected. For carbon nanomaterial production, it is desirable to maximize the amount of carbon monoxide produced by the reformer and minimize the amount of hydrogen produced. Accordingly, the reformer feed may contain as much steam as necessary to avoid coke formation.
In one embodiment of FIG. 2, the synthesis gas produced as shown by reaction scheme (III) includes hydrogen, carbon monoxide, remaining unreacted carbon dioxide, and remaining unreacted hydrocarbon. This admixture may be further processed by removing all other components, i.e. hydrogen, unreacted carbon dioxide, and unreacted hydrocarbons to the desired extent to obtain purified carbon monoxide. The purification process may be described as follows.
Hydrogen and unreacted hydrocarbons may be removed, leaving a main stream comprising carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide and a by-product stream comprising hydrogen and unreacted hydrocarbons. Such separation of hydrogen and unreacted hydrocarbons from the synthesis gas may be achieved by using one or more membranes as described above. The membrane (s) can be the same as described with respect to FIG. Alternatively, such separation may be achieved using other suitable processes such as, for example, a pressure swing adsorption process and / or a cryogenic separation process.
After separating hydrogen and unreacted hydrocarbons using the membrane (s), the main stream containing carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide is directed to the carbon nanomaterial generation unit, using the aforementioned Baudart reaction (I) As a result, a carbon nanomaterial and a carbon dioxide stream are generated. Alternatively, carbon dioxide may be removed from the main stream to the desired extent to produce a substantially pure carbon monoxide stream that is then directed to a carbon nanomaterial production unit. Recycle the carbon dioxide stream (including the unreacted portion of carbon dioxide that was present in the main stream and the carbon dioxide formed as a result of the Boudart reaction) as described above, and the dry reforming process or dry and steam reforming May be used in any combination process.
This will be described in more detail with reference to FIG. As can be seen from FIG. 2, the
After leaving the pretreatment reactor 2A, the hydrocarbons may enter the hydrocarbon conversion reactor 2B via
The
In FIG. 2,
The
The permeated
The
In some cases, the carbon
Many variations of the apparatus and process illustrated by FIG. 2 are possible. The heat required for the reformer can be generated by combustion of a portion of the hydrogen product from the reformer. Alternatively, hydrogen products can be sold and natural gas can be used as reformer fuel. Furthermore, the heat released by the exothermic reaction in the carbon
In some embodiments, additional amounts of carbon dioxide can be taken from an external source and blended with the feed to the reformer to achieve additional benefits. If the hydrocarbon supplied to the reformer is methane, up to an equimolar amount of external carbon dioxide may also be supplied from
CH4+CO2 → 2C+2H2O (V)
CH 4 + CO 2 → 2C + 2H 2 O (V)
This process provides a means for consuming carbon dioxide and thus preventing its release into the atmosphere, which is believed to be an obvious contributor to global warming. Since the total reaction (V) is exothermic, the efficient energy integration of the operation of the various units of the process combines the combination of carbon nanotube production with the sequestration of externally generated carbon dioxide, and almost no additional combustion of fossil fuels. Or it can be accomplished without any.
In the other case described with reference to FIG. 3, the synthesis gas may be obtained by the dry reforming process shown by reaction scheme (III). The process of dry reforming may be substantially similar to that described with respect to FIG. 2, optionally including the use of steam reforming. As mentioned above, the carbon dioxide by-product may be recycled and blended with the feed to the reformer, increasing the amount of carbon monoxide produced by the reformer.
However, some additional features may be used. These additional features may include using a cold box instead of a membrane separator to separate hydrogen and unreacted hydrocarbons from the synthesis gas. This feature may be used in large-scale production plants. The process also makes it possible to produce hydrogen as a valuable coproduct.
This can be explained in more detail with reference to FIG. As can be seen from FIG. 3, the

The
The

The
The nanocarbon production unit 3F comprises a carbon nanomaterial production reactor, an apparatus for separating a solid carbon nanomaterial product from an effluent gas stream, an apparatus for separating and reusing unreacted feed gas, and optionally a carbon dioxide. It may contain several subunits (not shown) such as an apparatus for separating unwanted by-products from the carbon by-product stream.
The
Many variations of the above process can be devised. For example, the heat required for the reformer may be generated by combustion of a portion of the hydrogen product from the reformer. Alternatively, hydrogen products may be sold and natural gas can be used as reformer fuel. Furthermore, the heat released by the exothermic reaction in the carbon nanomaterial reactor unit 3F may be used to preheat the feed to the reformer, thereby reducing the amount of fuel required for the process.
In some embodiments, additional amounts of carbon dioxide can be taken from an external source and blended with the feed to the reformer to achieve additional benefits. When the hydrocarbon supplied to the reformer is methane, up to an equimolar amount of external carbon dioxide may also be supplied to the reactor via

All the aforementioned process integration schemes can help to eliminate substantially all carbon dioxide emissions from the carbon nanomaterial production process. It is also possible to capture carbon dioxide and serve as part of the supply to the process. Thus, the integration process can serve as an effective way to sequester carbon dioxide in the form of valuable products (carbon nanomaterials).
