Description

The present invention relates to an image forming apparatus such as a copying machine, a laser printer, and an ink jet printer, and more particularly, to an image forming apparatus having a function of discriminating a paper type of a recording sheet using an image sensor.

Conventionally, there are various types of recording paper used in this type of image forming apparatus in terms of thickness, basis weight, surface property, material, and the like, and image formation of such a wide variety of recording papers under the same process conditions is possible. However, there is a problem that a good image cannot be obtained with another type of recording paper, although a good image is output with a certain type of recording paper.

In particular, in terms of surface properties of recording paper, the process conditions (for example, the fixing temperature of an electrophotographic apparatus using a thermal fixing method, etc.) where the output image is the best with a recording paper with a smooth surface and a recording paper with a large unevenness (rough paper) ) Are greatly different, a large difference in image quality occurs when output under the same process conditions.

Therefore, as in Patent Document 1, for example, a surface image of a recording paper is read by an image pickup device such as a CCD, the surface property of the recording paper is detected by a predetermined algorithm based on the image, and a process is performed according to the detection result. It has been proposed to automatically adjust the conditions.

Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 11-271037

However, the conventional image forming apparatus as described above has the following problems.

That is, in the configuration in which the image sensor is arranged on the conveyance path as in Patent Document 1, since the surface image is read during conveyance of the recording paper, in order to obtain a good image with no blur in the read image, It is necessary to increase the shutter speed, and it is necessary to use a higher-performance and expensive image sensor, and it is necessary to increase the amount of light irradiated on the surface of the recording paper by increasing the shutter speed. This imposes a burden on the user in terms of cost.

Further, in the configuration in which the image sensor is disposed in the paper feed unit, in the case of an image forming apparatus having a plurality of paper feed units, there is an inconvenience that only the recording paper of a specific paper feed unit can be detected. Alternatively, it is necessary to provide as many image sensors as the number of paper feeding units, and in this case as well, a burden is imposed on the user in terms of cost.

The present invention has been made in view of the above problems, and in an image forming apparatus that performs paper type discrimination using an image sensor, there is no blur even when the shutter time of the image sensor is increased, and the accuracy is high. Another object of the present invention is to provide an image forming apparatus capable of discriminating paper types at a lower cost even in the case of having a plurality of paper feeding units in an image forming apparatus that performs paper type discrimination using an image sensor. Embodiments of the present invention will be described below with reference to the drawings.

First, a first embodiment of the present invention will be described.

FIG. 1 is a cross-sectional view showing the configuration of an image forming apparatus according to the present invention. Here, the configuration of an electrophotographic color laser printer (hereinafter referred to as a printer) 100 connected to a host computer 200 as an external device is schematically shown. Is shown.

The printer 100 includes a deck 101 that is a first paper feed unit and stores recording paper P. Further, the printer 100 includes a deck paper presence sensor 102 that detects the presence or absence of the recording paper P in the deck 101, and a deck 101. Pickup roller 103 for feeding out the recording paper P, deck paper feeding roller 104 for transporting the recording paper P fed out by the pickup roller 103, and a retard roller for making a pair with the deck paper feeding roller 104 to prevent double feeding of the recording paper P 105 is provided.

Reference numeral 180 denotes a recording paper tray as a second paper supply unit, and a tray paper supply roller 181 for feeding out the recording paper P on the tray 180 is provided. A video reading sensor 106 described later is provided downstream of the deck paper feed roller 104 and the tray paper feed roller 181.

The video reading sensor 106 irradiates light onto the surface of the recording paper P that is fed and conveyed from the deck 101 by the deck paper feeding roller 104, collects the reflected light and forms an image, and the recording paper P is present. The video of a specific area is detected. Here, the distance between the image detection specific area position by the image reading sensor 106 and a registration roller pair 107 described later is set to be shorter than the minimum length in the transport direction of various recording paper sizes handled by the printer 100.

Further, a registration roller pair 107 that synchronously conveys the recording paper P and a pre-registration sensor 108 that detects the conveyance state of the recording paper P to the registration roller pair 107 are disposed downstream of the image reading sensor 106. Further, an intermediate transfer belt (hereinafter referred to as ITB) 109 is disposed downstream of the registration roller pair 107.

On the ITB 109, an image forming unit comprising process cartridges 110, 111, 112, 113 for four colors (yellow Y, magenta M, cyan C, black B) and scanner units 114, 115, 116, 117 is provided. The formed toner images are sequentially superimposed by the primary transfer rollers 118, 119, 120, and 121. Thus, a color image is formed, and this color image is further transferred onto the recording paper P by the secondary transfer roller 122 and conveyed.

Downstream of the secondary transfer roller 122, a pair of a fixing roller 124 and a pressure roller 125 each provided with a heater 123 for heating in order to thermally fix the toner image transferred onto the recording paper P, and a fixing roller 124. Each scanner unit 114, 115, 116, 117 is not shown, but each laser unit emits a laser beam modulated based on each image signal sent from a video controller 131, which will be described later, and each laser unit. Are formed of a polygon mirror, a scanner motor, and an imaging lens group for scanning the laser light from the photosensitive drums 132, 133, 134, and 135.

Each of the process cartridges 110, 111, 112, and 113 includes photosensitive drums 132, 133, 134, and 135 necessary for a well-known electrophotographic process, and a charging roller and a developing roller (not shown). It is comprised so that attachment or detachment is possible.

When the video controller 131 receives image data sent from the personal computer 200 or the like as an external device, the video controller 131 expands the image data into bitmap data and generates an image signal for image formation.

A DC controller 137 is a control unit of the printer 100, and includes an MPU (microcomputer) 138 having a RAM 138a, a ROM 138b, a timer 138c, a digital input / output port 138d, and various input / output control circuits (not shown). It is configured.

Reference numeral 139 denotes a main motor, which rotates and drives the conveyance system rollers such as the ITB 109, the photosensitive drums 132, 133, 134, 135, and the fixing roller 124 via a drive transmission system (not shown), and a registration roller via the clutch 140. The pair 107 is driven to rotate. Reference numeral 141 denotes a stepping motor that rotates the pickup roller 103 and the deck discharge roller 104.

Next, the structure of the image reading sensor 106 will be described with reference to FIG. As shown in the figure, the image reading sensor 106 includes an LED 3 as a light irradiation means, a CMOS sensor 4 as a reading means, lenses 5 and 6 as imaging lenses. The light having the LED 3 as a light source is applied to the surface of the recording paper transport guide 1 or the surface of the recording paper P on the recording paper transport guide (recording paper transport path) 1 through the lens 5.

The reflected light from the recording paper P is collected through the lens 6 and imaged on the CMOS sensor 4. Thereby, the surface image of the recording paper conveyance guide 1 or the recording paper P is read. In this embodiment, the LED 3 is arranged so that the LED light is irradiated obliquely with a predetermined angle with respect to the surface of the recording paper P as shown in FIG.

FIG. 3 is a diagram showing the relationship between the surface of the recording paper P read by the CMOS sensor 4 of the video reading sensor 106 and an example in which the output from the CMOS sensor 4 is digitally processed to 8 × 8 pixels. The digital processing is performed by converting the analog output from the CMOS sensor 4 into 8-bit pixel data by an A / D converter (not shown) as conversion means.

3A is an enlarged image of the surface of the recording paper A, which is a so-called rough paper, in which the fibers of the paper on the surface are relatively loose, and FIG. 3B is a diagram of the recording paper B, which is a commonly used so-called plain paper. The enlarged surface image (c) shows an enlarged image of the surface of the recording paper C, which is a glossy paper in which the paper fibers are sufficiently compressed. Then, these images read into the CMOS sensor 4 are digitally processed to become images shown in (d), (e), and (f) of FIG.

Thus, the image on the surface varies depending on the type of recording paper. This is a phenomenon that occurs mainly because the fiber state on the paper surface is different. Therefore, as described above, the image that has been digitally processed by reading the surface of the recording paper by the CMOS sensor 4 can be discriminated by the surface state of the paper fiber of the recording paper.

Then, for example, if the paper type has a paper fiber on the surface like recording paper A shown in FIG. 3, the fixing temperature is increased, and if the paper fiber on the surface is smooth like recording paper C, the fixing temperature is low. The temperature control of the fixing roller 124 is performed by setting.

Next, the control operation of this embodiment by the MPU 138 provided in the DC controller 137 serving as a reading timing control means will be described using the flowchart of FIG.

First, it is determined whether or not the image forming operation is started in S101. If the image forming operation is started, the recording paper P waits before the recording paper registration roller in the registration adjustment by the registration roller pair 107 accompanying the image forming operation in S102. Wait until it reaches the state (hereinafter referred to as waiting before registering). When the pre-registration standby state is entered, the LED 3 is turned on in S103, and the image of the recording paper P is read by the CMOS sensor 4 in S104.

Next, after the LED 33 is turned off in S105, it is determined in S106 that the recording paper P is waiting before registration again in S106. This is because the video is read again when the recording paper P is in a transport state during image reading and a good video cannot be read (such as blurring of the read image). If it is in the pre-registration standby state in S106, a video comparison calculation described later is performed in S107, and the paper type is determined based on the video comparison calculation result in S108.

Here, the above-described video comparison calculation method will be described. In this image comparison calculation, the maximum density pixel Dmax and the minimum density pixel Dmin are derived from the result of reading a plurality of video images on the surface of the recording paper. This is executed for each read video and averaged. That is, when the paper fiber on the surface is sticking like the recording paper A, many shadows of the fiber are generated. As a result, the difference between the bright part and the dark part is large, and Dmax−Dmin becomes large. On the other hand, on the surface such as the recording paper C, the shadow of the fiber is small and Dmax−Dmin is small. By this comparison, the paper type of the recording paper can be determined.

In addition, since the above-mentioned video comparison calculation needs to process the sampling processing of the video from the CMOS sensor 4 and the gain and filter calculation processing in real time, it is desirable to use a digital signal processor.

As described above, in this embodiment, in the image forming apparatus that performs the paper type discrimination using the image sensor such as the CMOS sensor 4 or the CCD sensor, the LED 3 and the CMOS sensor 4 are disposed on the recording paper conveyance guide 1. Since the reading operation of the recording paper surface image by the CMOS sensor 4 is performed when the recording paper P is stopped, even if the shutter time of the image sensor is extended, there is no blurring and an accurate image can be read.

Even in the case of having a plurality of paper feed units, the LED 3 and the CMOS sensor 4 are arranged on the downstream side from the junction of the recording paper conveyance path from each paper feed unit, so that the paper type is discriminated at a lower cost. It becomes possible.

Next, a second embodiment of the present invention will be described. In addition, about the structure similar to the 1st Example shown in FIGS. 1-4, the same code | symbol is attached | subjected and the description is abbreviate | omitted.

FIG. 5 is a flowchart showing the control operation by the MPU 138 provided in the DC controller 137 as the reading timing control means according to this embodiment.

The difference from the first embodiment is that the image reading operation is not waited until the recording paper P is stopped in the standby state before registration after the image forming operation is started, but the paper feeding unit that feeds the recording paper P in S201. Is determined, the recording paper P is fed in S202, the recording paper P is transported to the pre-registration standby position in S203, the pre-registration standby state is set in S204, and the S108 paper is turned on from the LED lighting in S103. It is a point that performs a series of operations up to seed determination.

By this control, it is possible to provide a longer waiting time for the recording paper P before the registration, so that the recording paper P can be forcibly stopped before the registration at the time of image reading.

As described above, in this embodiment, the LED 3 and the CMOS sensor 4 are arranged on the recording paper conveyance guide 1 and the conveyance of the recording paper P is stopped when the CMOS sensor 4 reads the recording paper surface image. The same effect as the above-described embodiment can be obtained.

Since the recording paper P can perform a normal image forming operation from the pre-registration standby state after the above processing, the description is omitted here.
