Abstract
【解決手段】フィルム長手方向と透過軸が平行である反射型直線偏光子(Pr)と、長手方向と透過軸が平行である吸収型偏光子(Pa)とを、それぞれ少なくとも1層有し、両者の透過軸が平行となるように配置されている長尺積層偏光板(PL)により、上記課題が解決される。

Description
本発明の長尺積層板の製造方法の第3の好ましい実施形態は、幅方向に配向軸を有する長尺配向基材上に、重合性官能基を有する液晶モノマーと二色性色素を含有する溶液を塗布する工程、液晶モノマーを重合することでホモジニアス配向させフィルム長手方向と透過軸が平行である吸収型偏光子を形成する工程、前記吸収型偏光子をフィルム長手方向と透過軸が平行である反射型直線偏光子上に積層する工程、を含む。
常、直線偏光の偏光方向を変える場合に用いられる。
長手方向に透過軸を有する1300mm幅の長尺反射型直線偏光子(3M製、D−BEF、偏光度:87%)にコロナ処理を施した。その上にロールコーターを用いて、リオトロピック液晶性色素(オプティバ製、LCポラライザー)を塗工幅1250mmで塗設したのち、80℃で2分間乾燥することで長手方向に透過軸を有する吸収型偏光子を形成し、長尺積層偏光板を得た。
トリアセチルセルロース(TAC)フィルム上に、実施例1と同様にリオトロピック液晶性色素の吸収型偏光子を塗設・形成した。この吸収型偏光子の吸収スペクトルを、偏光子を塗設していないTACフィルムをリファレンスとして、日立製作所製分光光度計U4100を用い、プリズム偏光子にて透過軸方向(塗設時のフィルム搬送方向)の直線偏光、吸収軸方向(搬送方向と垂直方向)の直線偏光のそれぞれについて測定した。吸収スペクトルを図6に示す。なお、550nmの光に対する吸光度は、透過軸方向が0.117、吸収軸方向が1.163であった。
ジアクリル液晶モノマー(BASF製 PalioColor LC-242)、重合開始剤(チバスペシャリティーケミカルズ製 イルガギュアー906)、二色性色素(三井化学製 S−428)を97:3:0.5の重量比で配合した20重量%のシクロペンタノン溶液を、幅方向に配向軸を有する1330mm幅のPETフィルム(東レ製 ルミラー)にグラビアロールコーターを用いて、塗工幅1250mmで塗設し、80℃で2分間乾燥後、積算光量300mJの紫外線照射により硬化させ、長手方向に透過軸を有する吸収型偏光子層を形成した。
実施例2と同様の吸収型偏光子層をPETフィルム上からTACフィルム上に転写し、参考例1と同様に吸収スペクトルを測定した。吸収スペクトルを図7に示す。なお、550nmの光に対する吸光度は、透過軸方向が0.143、吸収軸方向が0.589であった。
反射型直線偏光子として、実施例1と同様の長尺反射型直線偏光子2枚を、両者の透過軸が平行となるようにロール・トゥー・ロールで積層して用いた以外は、実施例1と同様にして、長尺積層偏光板を得た。反射型偏光子を二枚積層した状態での偏光度は95%であった。
吸収型偏光子の液晶層の塗設厚みを大きくした以外は、実施例1と同様にして長尺積層偏光板を得た。なお、参考例1と同様に、吸収型偏光子層のみの吸収スペクトルを測定したところ、550nmの光に対する吸光度は、透過軸方向が0.210、吸収軸方向が2.037であった。
吸収型偏光子の液晶層の塗設厚みを小さくした以外は実施例1と同様にして長尺積層偏光板を得た。なお、参考例1と同様に、吸収型偏光子層のみの吸収スペクトルを測定したところ、550nmの光に対する吸光度は、透過軸方向が0.047、吸収軸方向が0.458であった。
市販のIPSモード液晶パネル(日立製、WOO7000)に、光源側偏光板として、実施例1で得られた長尺積層偏光板を、透過軸がパネルの長辺方向と平行となるように切り出して配置し、視認側偏光板として、ヨウ素系偏光板(日東電工製 SEG1423DU)を、透過軸がパネル短辺方向と平行となるように配置して液晶表示装置を得た。得られた液晶表示装置を照度200ルクスの外光下で、黒表示(電圧がOFFの状態)とした場合の正面観察時の視認性および、方位角45°、極角60°方向から斜視した場合の視認性、ならびに、白表示(電源ONの状態)での正面観察時の視認性を確認した。結果を表1に示す。
光源側偏光板として、実施例2〜5の長尺積層偏光板、ならびに、反射型直線偏光子(D−BEF)、ヨウ素系吸収型偏光板(日東電工製 SEG1423DU)を用いた以外は実施例6と同様に液晶表示装置を作成し、視認性および斜視時視認性を確認した。結果を表1に示す。また、前記の実施例および比較例に関して、画面のアスペクト比が16:9のワイド型液晶表示装置に、光源側偏光板と視認側偏光板の透過軸が垂直となるように配置した場合に、最大対応可能な画面サイズ(長辺方向)の計算結果を表1に併せて記載する。

Claims (13)
- フィルム長手方向と透過軸が平行である反射型直線偏光子と、フィルム長手方向と透過軸が平行である吸収型偏光子とを、それぞれ少なくとも1層有し、両者の透過軸が平行となるように配置されている長尺積層偏光板。
- 前記吸収型偏光子の波長550nmにおける吸光度が、透過軸方向の直線偏光に対して0.2以下であり、かつ、吸収軸方向の直線偏光に対して0.5〜2.5である請求項1記載の長尺積層偏光板。
- 前記反射型直線偏光子の偏光度が、80%以上である請求項1または2記載の長尺積層偏光板。
- 前記吸収型偏光子が、配向固定されたリオトロピック液晶性を示す物質、ホモジニアス配向したサーモトロピック液晶ポリマー、または、ホモジニアス配向した架橋性液晶ポリマーの少なくともいずれか1つを含む請求項1〜3のいずれか記載の長尺積層偏光板。
- フィルム幅が850mm以上である請求項1〜4のいずれか記載の長尺積層偏光板。
- 請求項1〜5のいずれか記載の長尺積層偏光板の製造方法であって、リオトロピック液晶性を示す二色性色素を含有する溶液を、長尺基材上に、前記長尺基材の長手方向にせん断を加えながら塗設し配向を固定して吸収型偏光子を形成する工程、前記吸収型偏光子をフィルム長手方向と透過軸が平行である反射型直線偏光子上に積層する工程、を含む長尺積層偏光板の製造方法。
- 請求項1〜5のいずれか記載の長尺積層偏光板の製造方法であって、リオトロピック液晶性を示す二色性色素を含有する溶液を、フィルム長手方向と透過軸が平行である反射型直線偏光子上に、前記反射型直線偏光子の長手方向にせん断を加えながら塗設し配向を固定して吸収型偏光子を形成する工程を含む長尺積層板の製造方法。
- 請求項1〜5のいずれか記載の長尺積層偏光板の製造方法であって、幅方向に配向軸を有する長尺配向基材上に、重合性官能基を有する液晶モノマーと二色性色素を含有する溶液を塗布する工程、液晶モノマーを重合することでホモジニアス配向させフィルム長手方向と透過軸が平行である吸収型偏光子を形成する工程、前記吸収型偏光子をフィルム長手方向と透過軸が平行である反射型直線偏光子上に積層する工程、を含む長尺積層偏光板の製造方法。
- 請求項1〜5のいずれか記載の長尺積層偏光板の製造方法であって、幅方向に配向軸を有する長尺配向基材上にサーモトロピック液晶ポリマーと二色性色素を含有する溶液を塗布する工程、前記液晶ポリマーを液晶転移温度以上に加熱する工程、加熱後に冷却して配向を固定しホモジニアス配向させフィルム長手方向と透過軸が平行である吸収型偏光子を形成する工程、前記吸収型偏光子をフィルム長手方向と透過軸が平行である反射型直線偏光子上に積層する工程、を含む長尺積層偏光板の製造方法。
- 前記長尺配向基材が、少なくとも幅方向に延伸された延伸フィルムである、請求項8または9記載の長尺積層偏光板の製造方法。
- 前記反射型直線偏光子と、前記吸収型偏光子とを、両者の透過軸が平行となるようにロール・トゥー・ロールで積層する請求項6、8〜10のいずれか記載の長尺積層偏光板の製造方法。
- 光源、光源側偏光板、液晶セル、視認側偏光板を、この順に有する液晶表示装置であって、
光源側偏光板が請求項1〜5のいずれか記載の長尺積層偏光板から切り出されたものであり、前記反射型直線偏光子が光源に近い側に、吸収型偏光子が液晶セルに近い側となるように配置されており、視認側偏光板が、ヨウ素系偏光板であることを特徴とする液晶表示装置。 - 前記光源側偏光板の透過軸が液晶表示装置の長辺方向と平行であり、前記視認側偏光板の透過軸が液晶表示装置の短辺方向と平行である、請求項12記載の液晶表示装置。
