Abstract
Description
The present invention belongs to the technical field of a top emission type organic light emitting device having a plurality of organic light emitting elements (organic EL elements) and emitting light of two or more colors.
In recent years, self-luminous devices compatible with flat panels have attracted attention. Examples of the self-luminous device include a plasma light-emitting display element, a field emission element, and an electroluminescence (EL) element.
In particular, organic light-emitting elements are being researched and developed vigorously, and area-color type organic light-emitting devices that add colors such as green, blue, and red have been commercialized. Development for full color is active.
The organic light-emitting element has a thickness of the organic compound layer through which the emitted light passes is as thin as the emission wavelength or less, so that in order to obtain an element having a desired emission color and good emission efficiency, It is known that a design considering the influence of optical interference is necessary.
Patent Document 1 discloses a technique for improving luminous efficiency in consideration of the influence of optical interference in an organic electroluminescent multicolor display in which organic EL elements having different emission colors are arranged in an array. That is, in an organic electroluminescence multicolor display, any functional layer (for example, a hole transport layer or an electron transport layer) having the same function as the organic compound material layer excluding the light emitting layer is provided corresponding to the emission color. This is a technique for improving the light emission efficiency by using different thicknesses.
The structure of a general organic light emitting device is that a transparent anode such as ITO, an organic compound layer composed of a hole transport layer, a light emitting layer, an electron transport layer, and the like, and a low work function upper reflective electrode are sequentially formed on a glass substrate. It becomes. This element structure is generally called a bottom emission type, and emitted light is emitted from the back side of the substrate through a light-transmitting anode.
When driving an organic light emitting device in which such bottom emission type organic light emitting elements are arranged in a two-dimensional array by an active matrix method, the bottom emission type has openings for thin film transistors (TFTs) and wiring on the substrate. There is a problem that the rate becomes narrower. As an attempt to improve this, a so-called top emission type organic light emitting device that emits emitted light in the stacking direction of the organic layer has been proposed.
In a top emission type organic light emitting device, it is necessary to form a light transmissive electrode, that is, a transparent or translucent electrode, on the outermost layer of the organic compound layer opposite to the substrate direction, for example, on the organic compound layer. ITO is deposited by sputtering. At this time, it is widely known that there is a problem that the driving voltage of the element increases due to damage such as oxidation of the organic compound layer. In order to prevent such damage caused by sputtering, for example, in Patent Document 3, the ITO film is formed by a coating method. In
In
In order to improve the light emission efficiency of the organic light emitting device, it is necessary to consider optical interference. In general, the condition for the maximum light emission efficiency is that the distance between the reflection surface and the light emission surface is λ / 4 with respect to the light emission wavelength λ. Is an odd multiple of. In other words, it is necessary to change the distance between the reflecting surface and the light emitting surface for each emission wavelength. However, when the thickness is adjusted with a general charge transport material, the charge transport material is driven by high resistance. There is a problem that the voltage differs for each emission color and it is difficult to drive under similar driving conditions. In this case, it becomes necessary to change the drive circuit and wiring for each emission color. In particular, when driving an organic light emitting device using a thin film transistor (TFT), it becomes difficult to satisfy the same drive characteristics for each luminescent color if the drive voltage differs greatly. In particular, when the distance between the reflecting surface and the light emitting surface is set to 3λ / 4 or more, the thickness of the charge transport layer increases, and the difference in driving voltage is further widened. .
The present invention has been made in view of the above problems, and an object thereof is to provide an organic light-emitting device having a low driving voltage and a small difference in driving voltage for each luminescent color.
As means for solving the problems of the background art, an organic light-emitting device according to the invention described in claim 1 is:
A substrate and a plurality of organic light emitting elements having different emission colors formed on the substrate,
Each organic light emitting element has a cathode, an organic compound layer including an electron injection layer and a light emitting layer in contact with the cathode, and a light-transmitting anode in order on the substrate,
The electron injection layer is an organic light emitting device including at least one of an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal, an alkali metal compound, an alkaline earth metal compound, and an organic compound,
The thickness of the electron injection layer is adjusted for each emission color so that each of the plurality of organic light emitting elements having different emission colors intensifies light emitted from the emission layer.
According to the present invention, since the thickness of the electron injection layer with little increase in driving voltage even when the thickness is increased is adjusted for each color, an organic light emitting device with a low driving voltage and a small difference in driving voltage for each emission color is obtained. Can be provided.
The organic light-emitting device according to the present invention includes a substrate and a plurality of organic light-emitting elements formed on the substrate and having different emission colors. Each organic light-emitting element has a cathode, an electron injection layer in contact with the cathode, an organic compound layer including the light-emitting layer, and a light-transmitting anode in order on the substrate. The electron injection layer contains at least one kind of alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, alkali metal compound, alkaline earth metal compound, and an organic compound. By having these materials, the electron injection property is improved. be able to.
The present invention is characterized in that the thickness of the electron injection layer is adjusted for each emission color so that each of the plurality of organic light emitting elements having different emission colors enhances the light emitted from the emission layer. Since the electron injection layer has a lower electrical resistance than other organic compound layers, adjusting the thickness of the electron injection layer can increase the light emitted from the light emitting layer while suppressing an increase in driving voltage. Furthermore, since the increase in drive voltage is small, the difference in drive voltage for each luminescent color can be reduced.
Hereinafter, a specific embodiment of the organic light-emitting device of the present invention will be described with reference to the drawings, but the present invention is not limited to this embodiment.

The organic light-emitting device of the present invention is a so-called top emission type organic light-emitting device that has a plurality of such organic light-emitting elements and emits light of two or more colors.

At least one is contained as a dopant.
Examples of the electron transport material used as the host material include, but are not limited to, an aluminum quinolinol derivative, an oxadiazole derivative, a triazole derivative, a phenyl quinoxaline derivative, and a silole derivative.
Examples of the alkali metal include Li, Na, K, and Cs, and examples of the alkaline earth metal include Ca, Sr, and Ba. As such a dopant, cesium and a cesium compound are particularly preferable. Cesium is preferable from the viewpoint of suppressing diffusion because it has a small electronegativity compared to other lithium, sodium, and the like, and thus has a large effect of improving electron injection properties, and has a larger atomic weight than other alkali metals. Furthermore, what doped the substance obtained by heat-depositing cesium carbonate is preferable. Cesium carbonate is stable in the air and easy to handle.
Since the electron injection layer 13 thus configured has a very small resistance value compared to other organic compound layers, the thickness can be increased. On the other hand, the thickness of the other organic compound layers can be determined without considering interference, so that the same thickness can be obtained regardless of the emission color. Of the organic compound layers other than the electron injection layer, a different material may be used for each light emission color for the light emission layer. In this case, it is necessary to form a film separately for each light emission color. Among the other organic compound layers, the charge conductive layer (electron transport layer, hole transport layer, hole injection layer) which is an organic compound layer excluding the light emitting layer straddles a plurality of organic light emitting elements having different emission colors. Can be formed in common. In this case, the film forming process can be simplified, and the cost can be reduced and the tact time can be shortened. As for the light emitting layer, when the same material is used regardless of the light emitting color, for example, when the light emitting color is changed by a color filter using a white light emitting layer, a plurality of organic light emitting elements having different light emitting colors are similarly used. It can be formed in common across the gaps.
In the top emission element, it is known that the optical distance between the reflective electrode and the air interface also affects the light extraction efficiency. For the purpose of improving the light extraction efficiency, the film thickness can be adjusted by changing the film thickness of the light emitting layer formed separately for each luminescent color for each luminescent color. In this case, it is desirable to adjust the thickness within a range in which the driving voltage does not change greatly for each emission color.
The thickness of the electron injection layer 13 is preferably set in the vicinity of the thickness where the efficiency of the organic light emitting element is maximized.
<数1>
nd=(1/4)λ×(2m−1) (mは、1以上の整数)
In other words, using FIG. 2, the light emitted from the light emitting region (light emitting position) 30 is directly emitted to the outside, and the reflected light 33 is reflected by the reflecting surface of the reflecting electrode 32 and extracted to the outside. Interfere with each other and are taken out through the transparent electrode 34. In the form of FIG. 2, the reflection surface is the interface between the reflection electrode 32 and the organic compound layer. Here, the optical condition in which the direct light 31 and the reflected light 33 are intensified is given by the following expression, where λ is the emission wavelength, d is the distance between the reflective electrode 32 and the light emitting region 30, and n is the refractive index.
<Equation 1>
nd = (1/4) λ × (2m−1) (m is an integer of 1 or more)
That is, when the optical distance from the light emitting position of each color organic light emitting element to the reflecting surface is an odd multiple of 1/4 of the peak wavelength (λ) of the emitted light, the direct light and the reflected light are intensified by interference. As a result, the light extraction efficiency to the outside is increased.
Therefore, in the organic light emitting device of the present invention, the thickness of the electron injection layer 13 is set so that the value of d derived from the above <Equation 1> is obtained.
Therefore, the organic light emitting device having the above configuration has a low driving voltage and a highly efficient configuration.
Since the interference condition is affected by the phase shift on the surface of the reflective electrode, it does not necessarily match the above-described <Equation 1>, so it is necessary to optimize depending on the type of the reflective electrode used. In view of display quality, it is preferable to use an optimum value of d from the viewpoint of obtaining light emission with higher color purity.
Further, when the value of d is used so as to meet the optical condition of m = 2, that is, 3λ / 4, the thickness of the organic compound layer can be increased, so that it is possible to suppress a short circuit / leakage that causes a light emission failure.
Other constituent members may be the same as those of the conventional organic light emitting device.
As the substrate 11, various glass substrates, a glass substrate in which a plurality of driving circuits such as TFTs (thin film transistors) are formed in a semiconductor layer such as poly-Si or a-Si (amorphous silicon), and a driving circuit is provided on a silicon wafer. And the like. In particular, since the present invention has a cathode on the substrate side, a-Si which is relatively inexpensive as compared with poly-Si, or a poly-Si substrate composed only of an n-channel type even if poly-Si is used. Can be used. In this case, the cost can be reduced as compared with the case of using both the p-channel type and the p-channel type.
In addition, when the driving of each organic light emitting element is controlled using the TFT, the current supplied to the organic light emitting element passes through the TFT. Normally, TFTs having the same configuration are formed regardless of the light emission color of the organic light emitting element. However, when the driving voltage of the organic light emitting element is different, there is a problem that the driving characteristics of the TFT differ depending on the light emission color. In the present invention, since the difference in driving voltage for each luminescent color can be reduced, the driving characteristics can be made uniform even if the same TFT is used regardless of the luminescent color, and a more accurate color can be expressed. An organic light emitting device can be obtained.
The cathode 12 is preferably a material having a high reflectance. For example, Cr, Pt, Ag, Au, Al, etc., and alloys containing these metal materials are preferably used. A thin transparent conductive material may be used on a highly reflective metal material. In general, a material having a low work function is preferable as the cathode material. In particular, since the electron injection layer 13 used in the present invention has a good electron injection property regardless of the work function of the electrode, a wide range of metals is used. I can do it.
Examples of the electron transport layer 14 include, but are not limited to, an aluminum quinolinol derivative, an oxadiazole derivative, a triazole derivative, a phenylquinoxaline derivative, and a silole derivative.
As the light emitting layer 15, a material that obtains desired light emission with a single material or a host material doped with a guest material is used. As the method, a host material and a guest material are simultaneously vacuum-deposited, and a light-emitting layer having an arbitrary dope concentration can be obtained by adjusting respective deposition rates. At this time, an arbitrary luminescent color can be obtained by changing the material of the luminescent layer or the host / guest combination constituting the luminescent layer, corresponding to the luminescent color.
Examples of the hole transport layer 16 include, but are not limited to, low molecular compounds such as triphenyldiamine derivatives, oxadiazole derivatives, polyphyllyl derivatives, and stilbene derivatives.
Examples of the hole injection layer 17 include, but are not limited to, organic substances such as steel phthalocyanine, star-perstamine compounds, polyaniline, and polythiophene, and metal oxide films. Further, the hole injection layer 17 is not necessarily required when sufficient hole injection properties can be obtained without the hole injection layer 17.
Each organic compound layer including the light emitting layer 15 is preferably formed by vapor deposition or the like. In particular, the light emitting layer 15 is formed at an arbitrary position by using a mask at the time of formation.
As the anode 18, a transparent conductive material such as ITO is used. Alternatively, a metal material having a high work function may be formed as a thin film with a thickness of about 1 nm to 10 nm and used in a light-transmitting state. Further, the anode 18 and the cathode 12 can be used to improve the external extraction efficiency and the color purity by utilizing the interference effect.
The organic light emitting device thus manufactured is preferably provided with a cap (not shown) on the organic light emitting element for the purpose of shielding from moisture, oxygen, etc. in the air. When light is extracted from the film surface side of the substrate 11, the cap is preferably translucent and glass or the like is used. Further, a gap may be provided between the cap and the organic light emitting device, and a desiccant or the like may be disposed.
As another method for protecting the organic light emitting device from moisture, oxygen, etc. in the air, a protective film may be formed on the surface of the organic light emitting device. Specific examples of such materials include silicon-based films such as silicon nitride, silicon oxide, and silicon oxynitride, inorganic films and polymer films such as films containing metal oxides, and laminated films thereof. However, a transparent material that can block moisture and oxygen is preferable.

<実施例1>
<Example 1>
The configuration of Example 1 of the organic light-emitting device of the present invention will be described along the manufacturing steps.
In this example, an organic light emitting device was prepared by preparing a substrate of 100 × 100 dots provided with an organic light emitting element having the same configuration as described above and a reflective cathode 112. At this time, an Al electrode was used as the reflective cathode 112. An outline of the configuration at this time is shown in FIG. Table 1 shows the thickness of each member constituting the organic light emitting device.
First, the organic compound layer was formed using a vacuum deposition method under a vacuum of 10 −4 Pa. The chemical structure of each material used in this example is shown in <Chemical Formula 1> below.
An electron injection layer (ET-1 + Cs 2 CO 3 ) 113 was formed to a thickness of 30 nm in common for all the pixel regions. The film forming method was performed by co-evaporating by adjusting the rate so that the doping concentration of Cs 2 CO 3 was 0.65 vol% with respect to the deposition rate of ET-1 of 0.3 nm / sec.
Further, a shadow mask was used to form a 30 nm thick pixel region of the element emitting red light and a 10 nm thick pixel region of the element emitting green light by the same method. Therefore, the thickness of the electron injection layer 113 corresponding to each color is 60 nm, 40 nm, and 30 nm for red, green, and blue, respectively.
Thereafter, an electron transport layer (ET-1) 114 was formed to a thickness of 10 nm in common for all the pixel regions at a deposition rate of 0.3 nm / sec. Subsequently, a light emitting layer was formed in the pixel region of each element that emits red, green, and blue light using a shadow mask.
As the light emitting layer 115a for red light emission, a co-evaporated film of EM-5 and EM-6 was formed by co-evaporation at 0.09 / sec for EM-5 and 0.01 / sec for EM-6.
As the light emitting layer 115b for green light emission, the co-deposited film of EM-3 and EM-4 is co-deposited with the deposition rate of EM-3 being 0.09 / sec and the deposition rate of EM-4 being 0.01 / sec. Formed.
As the light emitting layer 115c for blue light emission, (EM-1 + EM-2) was adjusted by adjusting the vapor deposition rate so that the vapor deposition rate of EM-1 was 0.87 nm / sec and the vapor deposition rate of EM-2 was 0.13 nm / sec. Vapor deposition was performed.
At this time, the thickness of the red, green, and blue light-emitting layers was 20 nm, respectively.
Subsequently, a hole transport layer (HT-1) 116 was formed to a thickness of 30 nm at a deposition rate of 0.3 nm / sec.
Further, as the hole injection layer 117, vanadium oxide (V 2 O 5 ) was formed to a thickness of 10 nm by EB (electron beam) evaporation.
Thereafter, a transparent anode (ITO) 118 having a thickness of 80 nm was formed by sputtering.
Now, consider the optical interference conditions for each color. The thickness of the element exhibiting red light emission from the reflective cathode 112 to the light emitting layer 115a is 70 nm, and the thickness of the light emitting layer 115a is 20 nm. The red light emitting material used in this example is a phosphorescent material, and its exciton lifetime is as long as 1 μsec. Therefore, it is presumed that the entire light emitting layer 115a is shining. Accordingly, assuming that the light emitting region is the center of the light emitting layer 115a and the refractive index of the organic layer is 1.8, the optical distance between the reflective cathode 112 and the light emitting region is calculated to be (60 + 10 + 10) × 1.8 = 144 nm. Since the peak wavelength of the element exhibiting red light emission is about 620 nm, the peak of the first order interference is calculated as 620/4 = 155 nm, but is set to the above thickness in consideration of the phase shift at the time of reflection and the like. .
Similarly, consider green and blue. Since the light emitting layers 115b and 115c of the element exhibiting green and blue light emission have high electron transport properties, it is considered that there is a light emitting region on the hole transport layer 116 side. The light emitting region is assumed to be the interface of the electron injection layer 113 on the hole transport layer 116 side and the refractive index of the organic layer is 1.8, and the optical distance between the reflective cathode 112 and the light emitting region is calculated. Green: (40 + 10 + 20) × 1.8 = 126 nm, Blue: (30 + 10 + 20) × 1.8 = 108 nm The primary interference peaks for green and blue are calculated as green: 520/4 = 130 nm and blue: 450/4 = 113 nm, and are set so as to substantially meet the interference conditions.
Luminous efficiency, and red, green, driving voltage when each blue and 1200cd / m 2, 2400cd / m 2, 400cd /
Note that the proportion of defective pixels in the device was about 0.5%.

<Comparative Example 1>
An organic light-emitting device was fabricated in the same manner as in Example 1 except that the thickness of the electron injection layer was 10 nm for each color and the thickness of the electron transport layer was 60 nm, 40 nm, and 30 nm corresponding to red, green, and blue. The optical interference conditions at this time are the same as those in the first embodiment. Table 1 shows the thickness of each member constituting the organic light emitting device.
Luminous efficiency, and red, green, driving voltage when each blue and 1200cd / m 2, 2400cd / m 2, 400cd /
<実施例2>
<Example 2>
An example in which the interference peak of each color is set to 3λ / 4 is shown (not shown). That is, an organic light emitting device was produced in the same manner as in Example 1 except that the reflective cathode had a laminated structure of Al and ITO having a thickness of 100 nm and the thickness of the electron injection layer was changed to 120 nm, 70 nm, and 40 nm in red, green, and blue. . Table 3 shows the thickness of each member constituting the organic light emitting device.
The light emitting region in the light emitting layer, the refractive index, etc. are considered in the same manner as in Example 1, assuming that the refractive index of ITO on the reflective cathode is 2.0, and the optical distance between the red, green, and blue reflective cathodes and the light emitting region. Calculate Red: (120 + 10 + 10) × 1.8 + 100 × 2.0 = 412 nm, Green: (70 + 10 + 20) × 1.8 + 100 × 2.0 = 380 nm, Blue: (40 + 10 + 20) × 1.8 + 100 × 2.0 = 326 nm. These values are 3λ / 4 conditions obtained by calculation, that is, red: 620 × 3/4 = 465 nm, green: 520 × 3/4 = 390 nm, blue: 450 × 3/4 = 338 nm, and almost calculated. Matches the value.
Luminous efficiency, and red, green, driving voltage when each blue and 1200cd / m 2, 2400cd / m 2, 400cd /
Note that the ratio of defective pixels in the organic light-emitting device of Example 1 was about 0.5%, whereas that of Example 2 was about 0.2%, and the number of defective pixels was small.
<比較例2>

That is, an organic light emitting device is manufactured in the same manner as in Example 2 except that the thickness of the electron injection layer is 10 nm common to all colors and the thickness of the electron transport layer corresponds to red, green, and blue, and is 120 nm, 70 nm, and 40 nm. did. The optical interference conditions at this time are the same as those in the second embodiment. Table 3 shows the thickness of each member constituting the organic light emitting device.
