Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing an electro-optical device in which an electro-optical material is interposed in at least a display region between the element substrate and the counter substrate that are disposed to face each other, a method for manufacturing a substrate for an electro-optical device, and a substrate for an electro-optical device. The present invention relates to a substrate for an electro-optical device, an electro-optical device, and an electronic apparatus manufactured by the manufacturing method.
As is well known, an electro-optical device, for example, a liquid crystal device is configured by sandwiching liquid crystal between two substrates made of a glass substrate, a quartz substrate, a silicon substrate, and the like. Switching elements such as film transistors (hereinafter referred to as TFTs) and pixel electrodes are arranged in a matrix, the counter electrode is arranged on the other substrate, and the optical characteristics of the liquid crystal layer sandwiched between the two substrates according to the image signal This makes it possible to display images.
In addition, the TFT substrate on which the TFT is disposed and the counter substrate disposed to face the TFT substrate are manufactured separately. The TFT substrate and the counter substrate are configured, for example, by laminating a semiconductor thin film, an insulating thin film, or a conductive thin film having a predetermined pattern on a quartz substrate. Each layer is formed by repeating a film forming process and a photolithography process for various films.
The TFT substrate and the counter substrate thus formed are bonded with high accuracy (for example, within an alignment error of 1 μ) in the panel assembly process. An example of this panel assembling process will be described. First, the surfaces of the TFT substrates formed in a large substrate and the liquid crystal layers of the plurality of chip-like counter substrates, which are manufactured in the manufacturing process of each substrate, are in contact with each liquid crystal layer. On the top, an alignment film made of, for example, polyimide is formed to align liquid crystal molecules along the substrate surface. Thereafter, baking is performed, and a rubbing treatment for determining the alignment of liquid crystal molecules when no voltage is applied is applied to the alignment film.
Next, when liquid crystal is interposed between the TFT substrate and the counter substrate, for example, by a liquid crystal sealing method, one substrate of a plurality of TFT substrates and a plurality of chip-shaped counter substrates on a large substrate In each of the sealing material forming regions above, a sealing material as an adhesive is formed in a substantially circumferential shape so as to have a notch serving as an injection port in part, and a plurality of the sealing materials are used on a large board. A plurality of chip-like counter substrates are bonded to the configured TFT substrate.
Next, after alignment is performed and each is cured by pressure bonding, a prescribed amount of liquid crystal is dropped in the vicinity of the inlet of the sealing material of each TFT substrate under vacuum, and then released to the atmosphere, thereby opening the inlet. The liquid crystal is injected between the TFT substrate and the counter substrate, and the injection port is sealed with a sealing material cured by heat or the like after formation.
Finally, a plurality of liquid crystal devices are manufactured by dividing the TFT substrate, to which the counter substrate is attached, from the large substrate along the dividing line along each TFT substrate.
By the way, in order to ensure a large display area of the liquid crystal device, the sealing material is generally formed in a substantially circumferential shape having an injection port as described above in the vicinity of the outer peripheral edge of the counter substrate. A region on the TFT substrate between the end surface of the TFT substrate and the end surface of the counter substrate (hereinafter referred to as a connection region) formed by the TFT substrate being larger than the counter substrate includes a liquid crystal device and an external device. Are connected to a flat flexible substrate (hereinafter referred to as FPC).
Here, when the sealing material injection port is sealed with the sealing material by the method shown in
Therefore, since the connection region on the TFT substrate needs to be formed large in consideration of the protrusion of the sealing material in order to secure a region for providing the external connection terminal, the number of TFT substrates configured in a large plate is small. In addition to being restricted, there is a problem that the TFT substrate becomes large and increases in weight, and as a result, the liquid crystal device becomes large and increases in weight.
Further, in
The object of the present invention has been made by paying attention to the above-mentioned problems, and according to the formation position of the sealing material, the electro-optical device can be reduced in size and weight, and the quality and productivity of the electro-optical device can be improved. To provide an electro-optical device manufacturing method, an electro-optical device substrate manufacturing method, an electro-optical device substrate manufacturing method, an electro-optical device substrate, an electro-optical device, and an electronic apparatus manufactured by the electro-optical device substrate manufacturing method. .
In order to achieve the above object, an electro-optical device manufacturing method according to the present invention includes an element substrate and a counter substrate opposed to the element substrate, and at least a display area between the element substrate and the counter substrate. In the method of manufacturing an electro-optical device in which an electro-optical material is interposed, a recess forming step of forming a recess on one end surface of the counter substrate using a laser beam, and one of the element substrate and the counter substrate A seal that surrounds the display area in a plane between the display area and the outer peripheral edge of the counter substrate, and forms a sealing material by opening an injection port on the one end face side where the recess is formed. A material forming step, a bonding step of bonding the element substrate and the counter substrate, and dropping the electro-optic material onto the element substrate exposed by the recess, and from the injection port to the display region Electric An injection step of injecting an optical material; and after injecting the electro-optical material, a sealing material is formed at the injection port, and at least a part of the sealing material is caused to enter the injection port by the concave portion, and A sealing step of entering the sealing material side from the one end face of the substrate and sealing the injection port with the sealing material.
According to the present invention, at least a part of the sealing material enters the inlet of the sealing material, and at least a part of the sealing material enters the sealing material side from one end surface of the counter substrate to seal the inlet. By forming the concave portion to be sealed with the stopping material in the counter substrate, the sealing material can be formed without protruding from one end surface of the counter substrate to the connection region on the element substrate. For this reason, the connection area | region of an element substrate can be made smaller than before. As a result, it is possible to reduce the size of the element substrate. Therefore, it is possible to increase the number of element substrates configured on a large plate as compared to the conventional case, thereby realizing cost reduction. Therefore, the electro-optical device itself can also be reduced in size and weight as compared with the related art. Furthermore, by dropping the liquid crystal on the element substrate exposed by the recess, it is easy to define the dropping position of the liquid crystal, and the element substrate exposed by the recess is closer to the sealing material side than one end surface of the counter substrate. Since it is an area | region, since a liquid crystal is difficult to disperse | distribute after a liquid crystal dropping, the connection area | region on an element substrate is not soiled by the dripping of a liquid crystal, Therefore The quality of an electro-optical apparatus can be improved. Further, since the cleaning process after the injection is not required, the productivity of the electro-optical device can be improved.
The recess forming step is performed when the counter substrate is divided from a large substrate on which the counter substrate is formed.
According to the present invention, when a plurality of counter substrates are divided from a large substrate, a sealing material is formed on each element substrate from the end surface of each counter substrate by forming a recess for each of the plurality of counter substrates. It can be formed without protruding into the connection region. For this reason, the space | interval of the end surface of each element substrate and the one end surface of each counter substrate, ie, the connection area | region on each element substrate, can be made smaller than before. As a result, each element substrate can be reduced in size, so that the number of element substrates formed on a large plate can be increased as compared with the prior art, and the cost can be reduced. Therefore, the electro-optical device itself can also be reduced in size and weight as compared with the related art. Furthermore, by dropping liquid crystal on each element substrate exposed by each recess, it is easy to define the dropping position of the liquid crystal, and each element substrate exposed by each recess is sealed more than the end face of the counter substrate. Since it is an area on the material side, it is difficult for the liquid crystal to scatter after the liquid crystal is dropped, so that the connection area on each element substrate is not soiled by dropping the liquid crystal, so that the quality of each electro-optical device can be improved. . In addition, since the cleaning process after the injection is not necessary, the productivity of each electro-optical device can be improved.
Further, the recess forming step irradiates the laser beam with a condensing point at a set depth inside the counter substrate, and forms a modified region by multiphoton absorption at the set depth. It is characterized by forming along a line.
According to the present invention, there is an effect that a concave portion that is difficult to process by dicing or scribing can be easily formed into a desired shape using a laser beam.
Moreover, the said recessed part formation process forms the said recessed part in the position of the said opposing board | substrate with which the said recessed part planarly overlaps with the said sealing material after the said bonding process.
According to the present invention, the sealing material has an effect that the inlet of the sealing material can be reliably sealed.
Furthermore, the said recessed part formation process forms the said recessed part in the position of the said opposing substrate which the said recessed part faces planarly with respect to the said injection hole after the said bonding process.
According to the present invention, there is an effect that a concave portion can be formed without worrying about the position of the sealing material on the counter substrate.
Moreover, the said recessed part has a some ridge part, and the said recessed part formation process forms at least one part of the said ridge part of the said recessed part in a curved-surface shape, It is characterized by the above-mentioned.
According to the present invention, it is possible to prevent the ridges of the recesses from being chipped after the formation of the recesses.
Furthermore, the concave portion forming step is characterized in that a convex portion having the same size as the concave portion is formed on the other end surface facing the one end surface of the counter substrate.
Advantageous Effects of Invention According to the present invention, it is possible to efficiently divide a plurality of counter substrates from a large plate on which a plurality of counter substrates are configured, and it is possible to efficiently form recesses in the plurality of counter substrates. .
In the method for manufacturing a substrate for an electro-optical device according to the present invention, an element substrate and a counter substrate facing the element substrate are disposed to face each other via a sealing material having an injection port opened, and the element substrate and the counter substrate Of the electro-optical device substrate constituting the counter substrate in the electro-optical device in which an electro-optical material is interposed through the injection port at least in a display region between the injection port and the injection port is sealed with a sealing material In the manufacturing method, after the electro-optical material is injected into the display region on one end surface of the counter substrate, at least a part of the sealing material is inserted into the injection port, and a part of the sealing material is A recess forming step of forming a recess that enters the sealing material side from the one end face of the counter substrate and seals the injection port is formed using a laser beam.

In the apparatus, a sealing material formed between the element substrate and the counter substrate and between the display region and an outer peripheral end of the counter substrate so as to surround the display region in a plane. An inlet for injecting the electro-optical material into the display region, formed by opening the seal material, and a sealing material for sealing the injection port after injecting the electro-optical material into the display region; And at least one part of the sealing material enters the sealing material side from the one end surface of the counter substrate to one end surface located on the injection port side of the counter substrate, and the injection port Less of the sealing material Characterized in that it also has a recess to penetrate the part being formed.

Since the concave portion to be sealed with the stopper is formed in the counter substrate, the sealant is formed to prevent the end surface of the counter substrate from protruding from the one end surface of the counter substrate. The distance between the end face and the end face of the counter substrate, that is, the connection region on the element substrate can be made smaller than in the conventional case. Since the liquid crystal is not easily scattered after dropping, the connection region on the element substrate is not soiled by dropping the liquid crystal, and the quality of the electro-optical device can be improved. Further, since the cleaning process after the injection is not required, the productivity of the electro-optical device can be improved.

First, the overall configuration of the liquid crystal device manufactured by the manufacturing method of the present embodiment will be described. 1 is a plan view of the liquid crystal device manufactured according to the present embodiment, FIG. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken along the line II-II in FIG. 1, and FIG. 3 is a view of the vicinity of the liquid crystal injection port of FIG. It is the elements on larger scale which expand and show.
As shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, the

Further, in the

As shown in FIG. 1, the sealing
Further, the opening formed in the sealing
Here, as shown in FIGS. 1 and 3, a planar surface having a plurality of
As shown in FIG. 3, when the liquid

First, an example of the configuration of the laser processing apparatus will be schematically described with reference to FIG. As shown in FIG. 4, the laser processing apparatus 60 includes a laser light source 61 that generates laser light L, a laser light source controller 62 that controls the laser light source 61 to adjust the output and pulse width of the laser light L, and the like. A dichroic mirror 75 that reflects the laser light L emitted from the laser light source 61 toward the condensing
In addition, the laser processing device 60 is irradiated with the laser light L condensed by the
The movement of the condensing point P of the laser light L by the condensing
Further, the movement of the condensing point P of the laser light L by the condensing
Therefore, by moving the
Further, in the movement of the condensing point P of the laser light L by the condensing
The laser light source 61 irradiates a laser beam having a wavelength that is absorbed by the
Further, the laser light source 61 is irradiated with the laser light L, and the modified region which is, for example, a cylindrical cavity by multiphoton absorption at the condensing point P at the set depth of the
The laser processing apparatus 60 further includes an observation light source 63 that generates visible light to illuminate the
A dichroic mirror 75 is disposed between the
About half of the visible light R emitted from the observation light source 63 is reflected by the
The laser processing device 60 further includes an
The
The laser processing apparatus 60 further includes an imaging
The imaging
Further, the imaging
After the data from the
In addition, the structure of the laser processing apparatus 60 mentioned above is an example, and of course is not limited to the structure mentioned above. Specifically, when irradiating the laser beam L inside the
Next, using the laser processing apparatus 60 configured as described above, as shown in FIG. 6, the
As shown in FIG. 5, first, in step S <b> 1, a plurality of chip-
The plurality of
Next, in step S <b> 2, a concave portion forming step for forming the
Specifically, first, the
Thereafter, the Z-
Thereafter, the
Thereafter, the Z-
As a result, as shown in FIG. 7, each of the plurality of
Note that the laser beam L irradiation by the laser processing device 60 is used to form the
Further, the modified
Further, as described above, the
Then, after forming various thin films such as the
Specifically, when the
Thereafter, in step S4, a
In the subsequent step S5, as shown in FIG. 9, as shown in FIG. 1 and FIG. 2, each
After bonding, each
As described above, the
Next, in step S6, under vacuum, the
Thereafter, in step S <b> 7, the liquid
In the present embodiment, as described above, at least a part of the sealing
As a result, as shown in FIG. 10, the
Thereafter, the plurality of
As described above, in the present embodiment, when the
According to this, the sealing
For this reason, the
As a result, the
Furthermore, after dropping the
In the following, modifications are shown in FIGS. 11 is a partial front view showing a state in which the counter substrate is configured as a large substrate, and FIG. 12 is a front view showing a state in which the counter substrate is divided from the large substrate in FIG.
In the present embodiment, the
Specifically, as shown in FIG. 11, when the plurality of opposing
Thereafter, when the plurality of
According to this, the plurality of
In this case, the
Hereinafter, another modification will be described with reference to FIG. FIG. 13 is a partially enlarged view showing, in an enlarged manner, the vicinity of the liquid crystal injection port in FIG. 1 as a modification of the formation position of the recess formed in the counter substrate.
In the present embodiment, as shown in FIG. 3, the
Not limited to this, the
Furthermore, another modification will be described below with reference to FIGS. FIG. 14 is a front view showing a state in which the concave portion of the concave portion has a chamfered portion and the concave portion is formed on the counter substrate, and FIG. FIG. 16 is a front view showing a state in which the concave portion is formed obliquely downward with respect to the Z-axis direction in the counter substrate, and FIG. 17 is a cross-sectional view taken along line XVII-XVII in FIG. .
In the present embodiment, it has been shown that the
If this is used, the recessed
As shown in FIG. 15, at least a part of the plurality of
Further, as shown in FIGS. 16 and 17, the laser beam L is irradiated obliquely from above to the one
The shape of the
Further, the liquid crystal device is not limited to the above-described illustrated examples, and it is needless to say that various changes can be made without departing from the gist of the present invention. For example, the above-described liquid crystal device has been described by taking an active matrix type liquid crystal display module using an active element (active element) such as a TFT (thin film transistor) as an example. An active matrix type liquid crystal display module using active elements (active elements) may be used.
Further, in the present embodiment, the electro-optical device has been described by taking a liquid crystal device as an example, but the present invention is not limited to this, and an electroluminescence device, in particular, an organic electroluminescence device, an inorganic electroluminescence device, or the like. また、電気光学装置は、半導体基板に素子を形成する表示用デバイス、例えばLCOS(Liquid Crystal On Silicon)等であっても構わない。 The electro-optical device may be a display device that forms elements on a semiconductor substrate, for example, LCOS (Liquid Crystal On Silicon). In addition, a reflective pixel electrode is used for the pixel, and each element of the pixel is formed below the pixel electrode.
In addition, the electro-optical device has a display device in which a pair of electrodes are formed on the same layer of a substrate on one side, for example, IPS (In-Plane Switching), or a pair of electrodes on one substrate via an insulating film.
