Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to an active matrix electroluminescence display device and an electronic apparatus.
An active matrix electroluminescence (hereinafter referred to as “EL”) display device includes, for each pixel, a light emitting element including a pixel electrode, a functional layer including at least an EL layer, and a cathode, and the light emitting element. And a thin film transistor to be controlled (hereinafter referred to as “TFT”). Since the EL display device is driven by current, in the case of an active matrix type, two or more TFTs including a switching TFT and a driving current supply TFT are required per pixel. Therefore, a top emission type capable of forming an EL layer on the upper surface of the TFT has been devised in order to achieve both securing of the TFT formation region and improvement in open efficiency (expansion of the EL layer formation region).
However, since silicon normally used for the active layer of TFT is light sensitive, when light generated in the EL layer enters the active layer, a light leakage current is generated, causing the EL layer to emit light and causing a decrease in contrast. It might be. Therefore, as described in Patent Document 1, a structure has been proposed in which a reflection plate made of a metal material is provided between the EL layer and the TFT formation region and the contrast is improved by suppressing the incidence of light on the TFT. ing.
However, since the EL display device having the above structure does not cover the entire substrate with the reflection plate, light from the EL layer directly above is blocked, but light irradiated from the outside such as sunlight (hereinafter referred to as “ Incident light into the device is not completely blocked. The incident external light is irregularly reflected between the components inside the apparatus including the back surface of the reflecting plate and becomes stray light, and part of the light reaches the TFT.
In order to solve the above problems, an EL display device of the present invention includes at least a pixel electrode made of a transparent conductive material, a light-transmitting cathode, and an EL layer sandwiched between the pixel electrode and the cathode. A light-emitting element comprising a functional layer, a light-absorbing insulating film made of a material that absorbs light of at least a wavelength in the visible range, formed on the opposite side of the light extraction direction of the pixel electrode, and the pixel electrode And a filter having at least absorption in a wavelength range corresponding to the excitation light of the EL layer.
The filter can suppress light emission of the EL layer due to external light. The anode and cathode forming the light-emitting element are transparent and have no reflection function, and light emitted from the EL layer toward the inside of the device is shielded by the insulating film having the above-described light absorption function instead of the reflection plate. Therefore, generation of stray light due to diffused reflection of light inside the device and generation of leakage current due to the stray light reaching the TFT can be suppressed. As a result, an EL display device with excellent contrast can be obtained.
Preferably, the filter includes a color filter that is formed on the light emitting element and transmits light of any one color of red light, green light, and blue light, and a black matrix that shields the periphery of the color filter. And consist of
Since the amount and wavelength range of external light incident on the inside of the device from the display surface side can be minimized, generation of stray light can be further suppressed, and an EL display device with further excellent contrast can be obtained.
Preferably, a light-absorbing partition made of a material that absorbs at least light having a wavelength in the visible range is provided above the light-absorbing insulating film.
Since a thicker light-absorbing material layer can be formed on the upper layer of the TFT, the incidence of external light can be further suppressed, and an EL display device with further excellent contrast can be obtained.
Preferably, the filter is formed on the cathode only through a sealing film.
In order to form a filter on a substrate on which a light emitting element or the like is formed, a filter is formed on a substrate different from the substrate on which the light emitting element or the like is formed, and both the substrates are mounted while aligning the light emitting element and the filter. The process can be simplified compared to the method of bonding. As a result, the manufacturing cost can be reduced and the yield rate can be improved.
Preferably, the sealing film is a silicon nitride film.
Since the silicon nitride film has a thin film thickness and can secure a sealing property against intrusion of moisture or the like, a light-transmitting region around the color filter can be reduced. As a result, it is possible to further suppress external light incident on the device as compared with a configuration in which a filter is formed through an adhesive layer, and an EL display device with further excellent contrast can be obtained.
Preferably, a thin film made of a material having a refractive index larger than the refractive index of the light absorbing insulating film and smaller than the refractive index of the pixel electrode between the light absorbing insulating film and the pixel electrode. It comprises.
Since the difference in refractive index between the thin films can be reduced, interface reflection can be reduced. Therefore, it is possible to further suppress the generation of stray light due to irregular reflection of light incident on the device, and to obtain an EL display device with further improved contrast.
Preferably, the optical density of the light absorption insulating film is in the range of 0.5 to 3.0.
A light-absorbing insulating film having an optical density within such a range can achieve both insulating properties and light shielding properties, so that contrast can be improved while maintaining reliability.
In order to solve the above problems, an electronic apparatus according to the present invention includes the above-described EL display device.
With this configuration, an electronic device with improved contrast when used in a bright place can be obtained.
DESCRIPTION OF EXEMPLARY EMBODIMENTS Hereinafter, embodiments of the invention will be described with reference to the drawings. Embodiments of the present invention are characterized in cross section. On the other hand, the plan view is substantially the same as a conventional EL display device, and the circuit configuration is also the same. Therefore, first, the configuration of an active matrix EL display device common to a later-described conventional example and each embodiment will be described with reference to FIGS.

The
A
In the case of a conventional EL display device, a microcavity structure is employed to generate three primary colors of red, green, and blue while using a functional layer that generates common white light throughout the
However, the EL display device having the above structure tends to have a low contrast when used in a bright place such as outdoors in the daytime. The reason is that stray light is generated by the
In addition, since the wavelength emphasized by a slight change in the optical path length also changes in the microcavity structure, it is necessary to maintain the film thickness accuracy of each component, particularly the
(First embodiment)
FIG. 4 is a cross-sectional configuration diagram of the EL display device according to the first embodiment. Unlike the conventional EL display device, the second
In addition to the absorption function described above, the
That is, the
The ITO film, which is a material for forming the
With the above-described configuration, the EL display device of this embodiment has the following effects.
First, excitation of the
In addition, since external light is suppressed from being reflected by the reflecting
In addition, since the periphery of the switching
Further, since the
Further, by removing the reflecting
Since the light
(Second Embodiment)
FIG. 5 is a cross-sectional configuration diagram of an EL display device according to the second embodiment of the present invention. First, the first embodiment differs from the first embodiment in that a
Since light absorption is also imparted to the partition wall, external light that has entered the device is absorbed even before reaching the light-absorbing
In addition, a
