Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to an electro-optical panel, an electro-optical panel module, and a projection display device, and more particularly to a structure of an electro-optical panel suitable for use as a light valve of a projection display device.
In a projection display device such as a liquid crystal projector, an electro-optical panel for light modulation may be used to form a predetermined image. In this case, a condensing optical system for applying light from the light source to the electro-optical panel, and an enlarged projection optical system for projecting light transmitted through the electro-optical panel onto a projection surface such as a screen and forming an enlarged image The light collected and condensed by the condensing optical system is transmitted through the electro-optical panel to form a predetermined image, which is projected forward by the magnifying projection optical system.
However, if dust adheres to or is scratched on the outer surfaces of the two transparent substrates that constitute the electro-optical panel, the outer surface of the transparent substrate is the surface of the electro-optical panel focused by the condensing optical system. Since the outer surface of the transparent substrate is in a focused state because it is only about 1 mm away from the liquid crystal layer, even if dust or scratches of about 10 to 20 μm are present, the projected image is remarkably deteriorated. There is a problem.
Further, in the projection display device, strong light is emitted from the light source, and therefore, a local temperature rise is likely to occur in the electro-optical panel. Such a rise in temperature partially changes the light transmittance of the liquid crystal, thus degrading the display quality. Further, the temperature rise also causes deterioration of electro-optical materials such as liquid crystals.
Therefore, Patent Document 1 (Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 9-105901) and Patent Document 2 (Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 9-113906) are separated by using a bonding material on the outer surface of the transparent substrate of the electro-optic panel. The transparent substrate of the electro-optic panel is installed, heat dissipation is enhanced by the air layer between the transparent substrate of the electro-optic panel and another transparent substrate, and scratches and dust are prevented from being attached to the outer surface of the transparent substrate of the electro-optic panel. The technology is described. However, in this method, when another transparent substrate is installed at an interval, light is reflected at the interface between the electro-optical panel and the air layer or at the interface between the air layer and another transparent substrate. In addition, there is a problem that an additional process of forming an antireflection film on the substrate surface is required to prevent reflection.
In order to solve the above problems, the inventor of the present application has already studied and filed various methods for bonding another transparent substrate on the outer surface of the transparent substrate of the electro-optical panel via a transparent adhesive. FIG. 6 schematically shows the structure of such an electro-optical panel. A liquid crystal as an electro-optical material is sealed between a
Therefore, the present invention solves the above-mentioned problems, and when the transparent substrate is bonded to the outer surface of the transparent substrate constituting the electro-optic panel using a transparent adhesive, the shape of the transparent substrate is changed to be transparent. An object of the present invention is to provide a novel structure capable of facilitating handling and reducing product defects by suppressing overflow of adhesive.
In order to solve the above-mentioned problems, the present invention has a means in which an electro-optical material is sandwiched between a first substrate and a second substrate, and at least one of the first and second substrates is provided. A third substrate is bonded to the outside by an adhesive, and a step is formed by shifting the end surfaces of the first substrate and the third substrate facing each other through the adhesive. Features.
According to this configuration of the present invention, even if the outer surface of the first substrate is scratched or dusted by the surface bonding of the third substrate, the scratch or dust is separated from the electro-optic material and defocused. A reduction in display quality can be prevented, a heat capacity of the electro-optical panel can be increased, and a reduction in display quality due to overheating of the electro-optical material can also be reduced. In addition, since the step is formed with the adhesive portion between the end surface of the first substrate and the end surface of the third substrate being sandwiched, even if the adhesive flows out from between the substrates, the amount of the step is limited to a certain level. It will be retained and retained and will be prevented from flowing out of the step. Therefore, the adhesive adheres to the outer surface of the electro-optical panel during the manufacturing process or after manufacturing, making it difficult to handle during work, or the adhesive adheres to the light transmission part of the electro-optical panel, resulting in product defects. Can be prevented. Further, since the adhesive is cured with the adhesive accumulated in the step, the adhesive force between the first substrate and the third substrate can be increased.
The present invention is characterized in that the step is formed by different planar sizes of the first substrate and the third substrate.
According to such a configuration of the present invention, the step can be formed only by changing the size of the substrate, so that it is not necessary to perform special processing on the end surface of the substrate.
The present invention is characterized in that the third substrate is larger than the first substrate, and the end surface of the first substrate is disposed inside the end surface of the third substrate.
According to this configuration of the present invention, the end surface of the first substrate is disposed inside the end surface of the third substrate, that is, the third substrate is formed so as to surround the first substrate. Even if the adhesive flows out, it is covered with the third substrate, so that the outflow to the outside of the electro-optical panel can be suppressed.
According to the present invention, an electro-optical material is sandwiched between a first substrate and a second substrate, and a third substrate is surface bonded with an adhesive to an outer surface of at least one of the first and second substrates. Thus, a groove is formed in a peripheral portion of the surface on which the adhesive is formed on at least one of the first substrate and the third substrate.
According to such a configuration of the present invention, even if the adhesive overflows from the substrate, it is retained and held at the level difference by a certain amount, so that it is prevented from flowing out of the groove. Therefore, the adhesive adheres to the outer surface of the electro-optical panel during the manufacturing process or after manufacturing, making it difficult to handle during work, or the adhesive adheres to the light transmission part of the electro-optical panel, resulting in product defects. Can be prevented. Furthermore, since the adhesive is cured in a state where the adhesive is accumulated in the groove, the adhesive force between the first substrate and the third substrate can be increased.
The present invention is characterized in that at least one end surface of the first substrate and the third substrate has an inclined surface inclined toward the inside of the substrate.
According to such a configuration of the present invention, since the inclined surface is provided, a region for storing the adhesive that flows out is widened, and as a result, it is possible to further prevent the adhesive from flowing out.
In the present invention, it is preferable that the inclined surface portion is partially formed on the bonding surface side in the substrate thickness direction at the end surface. Since it has an inclined surface part, the flowed-out adhesive can be collected by the inclined surface part. Furthermore, since the inclined surface portion is partially formed, the portion of the end surface where the inclined surface portion is not formed can be an end surface portion perpendicular to the plate surface as usual, so that the end surface portion can hold the panel. And positioning can be performed.
The present invention is characterized in that the step is formed by surface-adhering the first substrate and the third substrate while shifting them in the plane direction.
According to this configuration of the present invention, a step can be formed between the end faces even if the third substrate is formed to have the same size as the first substrate, so that no special processing is required for the substrate. .
In the present invention, it is preferable that the third substrate and the transparent adhesive have substantially the same refractive index as that of the first substrate.
According to this configuration of the present invention, it is possible to reduce interface reflection in the transparent adhesive and the third transparent substrate.
In the present invention, it is preferable that the transparent adhesive has elasticity even after curing.
According to this configuration of the present invention, by using the transparent adhesive having elasticity after curing, it is possible to reduce the distortion of the substrate due to the stress generated during the curing.
In the present invention, it is desirable that the transparent adhesive has a penetration after curing of 60 or more and less than 90.
With this configuration of the present invention, it is possible to avoid substrate distortion by absorbing the stress of the transparent adhesive itself while reducing the flow of the transparent adhesive as much as possible.
In the present invention, the thickness of the adhesive is preferably 5 μm or more and 30 μm or less.
With this configuration of the present invention, it is possible to conceal scratches and dust on the substrate with the adhesive by setting the thickness of the adhesive to 5 μm or more. Further, the adhesive strength can be made sufficiently high by making it 10 μm or less.
In another electro-optical panel of the present invention, a first substrate and a second substrate are bonded together with a sealing material, and an electro-optical material is sandwiched between the first substrate and the second substrate. A third substrate is disposed outside at least one of the substrate and the second substrate, the third substrate is larger than the first substrate, and the end surface of the first substrate is inside the end surface of the third substrate. A light shielding member is disposed on the third substrate along the periphery of the third substrate.
According to this configuration of the present invention, the third substrate has a larger outer shape than the first substrate, and the light shielding member is formed along the periphery of the third substrate. Intrusion can be prevented.
In the electro-optical panel of the present invention, light incident from the third substrate side is emitted to the second substrate side through the first substrate, and the light shielding member overlaps the sealing material in plan view. And it is extended outside the said sealing material, It is characterized by the above-mentioned.
According to this configuration of the present invention, since the light shielding member extends outside the sealing material, for example, when a thin film transistor is formed in the display area of the first substrate, scattered light from the sealing material is transferred to the thin film transistor or the like. Incident light can be prevented and deterioration of thin film transistor characteristics can be prevented.
According to the present invention, light incident from the third substrate side is emitted to the second substrate side through the first substrate, and one of the first substrate and the second substrate has an inner side of the sealing material. A light shielding film is disposed on the light shielding film, and the light shielding member overlaps the light shielding film in a plan view and extends outside the sealing material.
According to this configuration of the present invention, since the light shielding film and the light shielding member formed on the inner side of the sealing material overlap in a planar manner, light around the display area can be shielded, and a display with good contrast can be performed. In addition, it is possible to prevent the influence of leakage light on the panel, for example, deterioration of characteristics of the thin film transistor formed on the element substrate.
The present invention is characterized in that the light shielding member is disposed on the electro-optic material side of the third substrate.
According to such a configuration of the present invention, the distance between the light shielding film and the light shielding member inside the sealing material is smaller than the case where the light shielding member is provided on the opposite side of the liquid crystal layer side of the third substrate. It is possible to easily perform alignment when overlapping two-dimensionally.
The present invention is characterized in that the light shielding member is disposed on a surface of the third substrate opposite to the electro-optical material side.
According to this configuration of the present invention, since the light shielding member is disposed outside the third substrate, it is further effective to prevent light that is incident obliquely on the sealing material.
The present invention is characterized in that the first substrate and the third substrate are bonded to each other with an adhesive.
According to this configuration of the present invention, since the first substrate and the third substrate are surface-bonded with the adhesive, there is no air layer. Therefore, it is possible to prevent the occurrence of light reflection at the interface between the panel and the air layer. In addition, since the third substrate disposed outside the first substrate is larger than the first substrate, even if the adhesive flows out, the adhesive is covered from the third substrate, so that it flows out of the electro-optical panel. Can be suppressed.
The present invention is an electro-optical panel module including the electro-optical panel, a wiring member conductively connected to the electro-optical panel, and a case body that houses the electro-optical panel.
According to this configuration of the present invention, the adhesive can be prevented from flowing out by the case body.
The present invention is a projection display device including the electro-optical panel or the electro-optical panel module as a liquid crystal light valve. Here, the projection type display device includes a condensing optical system that condenses the light emitted from the light source onto the electro-optical panel, and expands the modulated light transmitted through the electro-optical panel to a projection surface such as a screen. And an enlarged projection optical system for projecting. The present invention is particularly affected by scratches and dust on the outer surface of the substrate of the electro-optical panel, and can be remarkably effective when applied to a projection display device in which overheating of the electro-optical panel is likely to occur.
In the electro-optical panel, it is preferable that the third substrate is surface-bonded to the outer surface of the second substrate via a transparent adhesive.
As described above, according to the present invention, since the outer surface is separated from the electro-optic material by debonding the third substrate, the display quality is reduced due to scratches and dust on the outer surface of the first substrate. In addition, the heat capacity of the electro-optical panel can be increased, and the deterioration of display quality due to overheating of the electro-optical material can be reduced. Further, a step formed between the end surface of the first substrate and the end surface of the third substrate, a step formed in the vicinity of the adhesive portion, or a recess including the adhesive portion is formed. As a result, even if the adhesive overflows from between the substrates, if it is a certain amount, it accumulates and is retained in the step or the recess, so that it is prevented from flowing out of the step or the recess. Therefore, transparent adhesive adheres to the outer surface of the electro-optical panel during the manufacturing process and after manufacturing, making it difficult to handle during work, and adhesive adheres to the light transmission part of the electro-optical panel, resulting in product defects Can be prevented. Furthermore, since it hardens | cures in the state which the adhesive agent accumulated in the level | step difference or the recessed part, the adhesive force of a 1st board | substrate and a 3rd board | substrate can be improved.
Further, when the third substrate has an outer shape larger than that of the first substrate, it is possible to prevent light from entering the sealing material by providing a light shielding member along the outer periphery of the first substrate.
Next, embodiments according to the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the drawings.

As the
Of course, if the
In the present embodiment, a quartz substrate having a thickness of 1.2 mm and a quartz substrate having a thickness of 1.1 mm are used as the
In the step of surface-bonding the
Here, the transparent adhesive preferably has elasticity even after curing. If the penetration of the transparent adhesive after curing is 90 or more, the adhesive flows from the substrate during curing, and an appropriate amount of adhesive cannot be held on the substrate. Further, if the penetration is less than 60, the stress at the time of curing the adhesive cannot be absorbed, and distortion occurs between the substrates. Therefore, the transparent adhesive preferably has a penetration of 60 or more and less than 90 after curing.
このようにすると、素子基板11又は対向基板12の端面と透明基板31,32の端面との間の接着部30a(面接着された両基板の間に形成される接着層における端部に相当する。)
In the present embodiment, the
In order for the protruding portion of the transparent adhesive 30 to be held by the stepped portion in the state as described above, the amount of the

The

Next, a second embodiment of the electro-optical panel according to the present invention will be described with reference to FIG. In this embodiment, the internal structure of the electro-

Next, a third embodiment of the electro-optical panel according to the present invention will be described with reference to FIG. In this embodiment, the internal structure of the electro-
In this embodiment, the end surfaces of the
In this case, instead of forming the end surfaces of the
Next, a fourth embodiment of the electro-optical panel according to the present invention will be described with reference to FIG. Also in this embodiment, the internal structure of the electro-
In this embodiment, the chamfered
Also in this embodiment, it is possible to hold the
In the third embodiment and the fourth embodiment described above, the end portions of the
A fifth embodiment of an electro-optical panel according to the present invention will be described with reference to FIG. Also in this embodiment, the internal structure of the electro-
In this embodiment, the
In this embodiment, the
In the second to fifth embodiments described above, the size of the element substrate and the transparent substrate and the size of the counter substrate and the transparent substrate are different, but the electro-optical panel module shown in FIG. Accordingly, the shape of the
Next, a sixth embodiment of the electro-optical panel according to the present invention will be described with reference to FIG. 11 is a cross-sectional view corresponding to the cross-sectional view of FIG. 8 describing the internal structure of the electro-optical panel of the first embodiment. Also in this embodiment, the internal structure of the electro-
In the present embodiment, as in the first embodiment, the
Next, a sixth embodiment of the electro-optical panel according to the present invention will be described with reference to FIG. 12 is a cross-sectional view corresponding to the cross-sectional view of FIG. 8 describing the internal structure of the electro-optical panel of the first embodiment. Also in this embodiment, the internal structure of the electro-
In the present embodiment, as in the sixth embodiment, the
In the sixth embodiment and the seventh embodiment described above, the

Although not shown in the figure, instead of forming a step on the end surfaces of the first and third substrates, or by providing a groove in the peripheral portion of the first substrate and the third substrate on the side facing the adhesive together with the step, The flow of the agent can be suppressed. With such a configuration, the adhesive strength can be increased by the adhesive accumulated in the groove, and the flow of the adhesive can be suppressed.
The element substrate and the counter substrate have been described using transparent substrates, but are not limited thereto. For example, in a reflection type electro-optical panel, an opaque substrate such as a silicon substrate may be used as one substrate, but the present invention can be applied to such a configuration.
