Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a printing apparatus and a print alignment method, and more particularly to a print alignment between heads when printing is performed using a plurality of print heads, and when printing is performed in both forward and backward scans of a print head. It is about alignment.
This type of conventional print alignment is generally performed as follows.
For example, in print alignment for forward scanning and backward scanning in reciprocal printing, or for positioning between heads when there are multiple heads, by adjusting the print timing for each of forward scanning, backward scanning, or between multiple heads The ruled lines are printed on the print medium while changing the relative print alignment conditions. Then, the user or the like observes the print result, selects the print condition with the best position, and sets the print condition related to the alignment with a printing apparatus or a host computer.
However, such a conventional alignment method often involves the complexity that the user or the like must select the alignment condition by looking at the print result and set the print condition.
Therefore, a pattern corresponding to a plurality of shift amounts of relative print positions of the first print and the second print (forward scan and reverse scan prints, or prints by a plurality of heads, respectively) relating to the alignment is printed, and the reflection is performed. Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 10-329381 discloses a technique for measuring optical characteristics such as density for each pattern and determining the print alignment condition between the first and second prints using the result. According to the technology disclosed in the publication, it is possible to easily perform print alignment without bothering the user.
Further, in particular, in an ink jet printing apparatus capable of color recording, at least each ink of cyan, magenta and yellow is generally used in addition to black, and more recently ink is formed by landing on a print medium. Some devices use ink such as light cyan (light cyan), light magenta (light magenta), and light yellow (light yellow) in order to reduce the graininess of dots.
However, in Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 2001-105577, a multi-color filter is provided in the sensor light receiving section, and the color filter is selected and used so as to be complementary to the pattern. Therefore, the sensor configuration is complicated, and the manufacturing cost of the printer is reduced. Was disadvantageous.
By the way, the problem that occurs when measuring high-brightness ink using a sensor light receiving unit that does not include the multi-color filter is not necessarily caused by each measurement, but is affected by the measurement environment. It may occur with a certain probability, or may occur due to aging or contamination of the sensor. On the other hand, accurate measurement can be performed when no malfunction occurs. The problem is that when a malfunction occurs, no appropriate action is taken, and print alignment is performed based on an inaccurate measurement result, resulting in a loss of print quality thereafter.
For the above-described problems, the printing apparatus according to the present invention has the same color tone in order to suppress the influence of the defect when the determination unit determines that the measurement result is defective and the determination unit determines that the measurement result is defective. If there is another print head, the print alignment condition determining means for using the adjustment value as a substitute is provided.
According to the present invention, even if a sensor light-receiving unit having a relatively simple configuration that does not include a color filter is used, it is possible to align the print position of ink with high brightness.
Hereinafter, the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the drawings. Hereinafter, the case where the present invention is applied mainly to an inkjet printing apparatus and a printing system using the inkjet printing apparatus will be described.
1. Outline In a dot formation position (ink landing position) adjustment (print position alignment) method and printing apparatus according to an embodiment of the present invention, forward printing and return printing in bidirectional printing in which dot formation position adjustment should be performed mutually (Corresponding to the first print and the second print, respectively) or each print (first print, second print) by a plurality of (two) print heads is performed at the same position on the print medium . At this time, printing is performed under a plurality of conditions by changing the relative dot formation position conditions between the first print and the second print. That is, a plurality of print patterns (patches) to be described later are formed by changing the relative dot formation position conditions of the first and second prints.
Then, according to the optical conditions determined in advance corresponding to the patches, the density of each print is read with an optical sensor having a resolution lower than the resolution of this print, and the most printable based on the relative relationship between the density values. Calculate the condition where the position is correct. This calculation depends on what pattern is printed.
In the present embodiment, a case where print alignment is performed between a print head that performs printing by discharging black ink and a print head that performs printing by discharging light cyan ink will be described.
2. Configuration Example of Printing Apparatus FIG. 1 is a schematic perspective view showing a main configuration of another configuration example of an inkjet printing apparatus to which the present invention is applied.
In FIG. 1, a plurality (six) of

6). Next, a print pattern used for print alignment will be described. In the following description, the ratio of the area printed by the printing apparatus to the predetermined area on the print medium is referred to as “area factor”. For example, the area factor is 100% if dots are formed entirely within a predetermined area on the print medium, 0% if no dots are formed at all, and if the printed area is half the area of the area, the area factor is 50%.
FIG. 5 is a schematic diagram showing a print pattern for print alignment used in the present embodiment.
In FIG. 5,
This print pattern is designed so that the density of the entire print portion decreases as the print position shifts. That is, the area factor is approximately 100% within the range of the patch as the print pattern in FIG. As the print position is shifted as shown in FIGS. 5B to 5C, the overlap between the light cyan ink dots (white dots) and the black ink dots (hatched dots) increases. , Areas that are not printed, that is, areas that are not covered by dots, also spread. As a result, the area factor decreases, so that on average, the overall density decreases.
In the present embodiment, the print position is shifted by shifting the print timing. This can be done by shifting the print data.
Although FIGS. 5A to 5C show the dot unit in the scanning direction, an appropriate unit can be set in accordance with the accuracy of registration adjustment or the accuracy of registration detection.
FIG. 6 shows the case of 4 dots.
In FIG. 6, FIG. 6 (A) shows a dot when the print position is aligned, FIG. 6 (B) shows a slightly shifted state, and FIG. 6 (C) shows a dot when printed in a further shifted state. The intention of these patterns is that the position of the first print (print with light cyan ink in this embodiment) and the second print (print with black ink in this embodiment) are shifted from each other, whereas the area factor is It is to make it decrease. This is because the density of the print portion strongly depends on the change of the area factor.
FIG. 7 shows the amount of deviation of the print position and the change in reflection optical density in the print patterns shown in FIGS. 5 (A) to 5 (C) and FIGS. 6 (A) to 6 (C) of this embodiment. An outline of the relationship is shown.
7). Processing for Print Positioning FIG. 8 shows an outline of an example of a processing procedure for print positioning.
First, the
The subsequent steps from printing the measurement pattern to determining the defect of the measurement result are performed for all the print heads (steps S802 and S806).
First, a print alignment pattern is printed (step S803). Next, the optical characteristic of this print pattern is measured by the optical sensor 30 (step S804). The optical characteristics obtained from the measured data are checked by the defect determination means (step S805), and the above processing is repeated for all print heads.
Next, an appropriate print alignment condition is obtained based on the defect determination result and the optical characteristics obtained from the measured data (step S807).
In order to obtain an appropriate print alignment condition from the optical characteristics, for example, as shown in FIG. 10 (described later), a point having the highest reflection optical density is obtained and data adjacent to the point having the highest reflection optical density is passed. Each straight line is obtained using a method of least squares or the like, and an intersection P of these straight lines is obtained. In addition to such linear approximation, it can also be obtained by curve approximation. The drive timing change is set by the print position parameter for this point P (step S808).
FIG. 9 shows a state in which the print patterns shown in FIGS. 6A to 6C are printed on the
The
In this way, by measuring with the carriage 2 stationary, the influence of noise due to the driving of the carriage 2 can be avoided. Further, by increasing the size of the measurement spot of the
As a configuration for making the measurement spot of the
That is, in order to avoid the influence of measurement variations, the reflection optical density may be measured a plurality of times for the same patch, and the average value thereof may be employed.
In order to avoid the influence of measurement variation due to density unevenness in the patch, a plurality of points in the patch may be measured and averaged, or some arithmetic processing may be performed. It is also possible to perform measurement while moving the carriage 2 to reduce time. In this case, it is highly desirable to increase the number of samplings and perform averaging or perform some arithmetic processing in order to avoid measurement variations due to electrical noise caused by motor drive.
FIG. 10 schematically shows an example of measured reflection optical density data.
In FIG. 10, the vertical axis represents the reflection optical density, and the horizontal axis represents a print position parameter for changing the relative print position of the light cyan ink print (first print) and the black ink print (second print). . As described above, the print position parameter can be a parameter for increasing or decreasing the print start timing of printing with black ink relative to printing with light cyan ink.
When the measurement result shown in FIG. 10 is obtained, in this embodiment, two points (both adjacent to the point having the highest reflection optical density (the point corresponding to the print position parameter (d) in FIG. 10)) ( The point P where the straight lines passing through the print position parameters (b), (c), (e), and (f)) in FIG. 10 intersect is determined as the point with the best print position. To do. In the present embodiment, the print start timing of printing with the corresponding black ink is set by the print position parameter corresponding to this point P. However, the print position parameter (d) may be used if strict print alignment is not desired or is not required.
As shown in FIG. 10, according to this method, the print alignment condition is selected with a finer pitch or higher resolution than the print alignment condition such as the print pitch used to print the
In FIG. 10, the density does not change greatly between the high density points corresponding to the print position parameters (c), (d), and (e) with respect to the difference in the print alignment conditions. On the other hand, between the points corresponding to the print position parameters (a), (b), (c) and between the points corresponding to the print position parameters (f), (g), (h), (i), The density changes sensitively to changes in print alignment conditions. In the case where the characteristic of density close to left-right symmetry is shown as in the present embodiment, the print registration condition used for printing is calculated by using points indicating density changes sensitive to these print registration conditions. The print position can be adjusted with higher accuracy.
The method for calculating the print alignment condition is not limited to this method. Based on these multi-value density data and the information on the print alignment conditions used for pattern printing, numerical calculation using continuous values is performed, and the discrete values of the print alignment conditions used for pattern printing are exceeded. The print alignment condition can be calculated with a high accuracy.
For example, as an example other than linear approximation as shown in FIG. 10, using these density data for printing, an approximate expression of a polynomial using a least square method for a plurality of print alignment conditions is obtained, and the expression is used. Thus, the condition that best matches the print position may be calculated. Moreover, not only polynomial approximation but spline interpolation etc. may be used.
Even when selecting the final print alignment conditions from the multiple print alignment conditions used for pattern printing, by calculating the print alignment conditions by numerical calculation using multiple multi-value data as described above Therefore, it is possible to align the print position with higher accuracy against variations in various data. For example, if the point having the highest density than the data of FIG. 10 is selected, the point corresponding to (e) may have a higher density than the point corresponding to the print position parameter (d) due to variations. Therefore, if the method of calculating the intersection point by calculating the approximate straight line from each of the three polints on both sides of the point with the highest concentration, the effect of variation is reduced by calculating using the data of three or more points. Can do.
FIG. 11 is a flowchart showing a process for determining a defect in the measurement result.
Dmax−Dmin<x
The defect determination of the measurement result is performed as follows. Of the print position parameters, the highest point density is Dmax (step S111), and the lowest point density is Dmin (step S112).
Dmax−Dmin <x
At this time, it is determined that the measurement result of the ink color is defective. (Steps S113 and S114). That is, it is assumed that the light cyan ink is not correctly detected by the

Meet.
FIG. 12 is a flowchart showing the processing of the print alignment condition determination means.
The faulty ink color is already known by the fault judgment means of the measurement result.
If there is a defect in the light cyan ink, the measurement result of the cyan ink having the same color tone is applied to the light cyan ink (steps S121 and S122). This is because the components such as pigments are the same, but the ink discharge speed change characteristics (changes in the speed at which the ink ejects from the print head, etc.), which is a major factor in the displacement of the print position, are almost the same. This is to show the same tendency. As a result, although the accuracy is lowered, it is possible to prevent the print position from being set far from the normal value.
Similarly, if there is a problem with the light magenta ink, the measurement result of the magenta ink having the same color tone is applied to the light magenta ink (steps S123 and S124).
Thereafter, an appropriate print alignment condition is obtained from the measurement result (step S125). This method is as described above.
