Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a glide head and a glide head assembly used when performing a glide inspection of a protrusion defect of a magnetic disk. The present invention also relates to a method for manufacturing a magnetic disk including glide inspection.
With the increase in recording density of magnetic disk devices, the flying height of the magnetic head has been reduced in order to reduce the distance between the magnetic head and the magnetic film of the magnetic disk. Protrusion defects on the surface of the magnetic disk may prevent the magnetic head from flying and may cause the magnetic head to crash and wear. It is important to eliminate and inspect minute protrusion defects with a height of several to several tens of nm. It has become a technology. Conventionally, a glide inspection is performed as a method for inspecting the above-described protrusion defect in a final inspection process of a magnetic disk.
In the glide inspection, for example, as described in FIG. 1 or FIG. 6 of
As described in the above-mentioned conventional example, the slider's flying surface is generally provided with two left and right floating rails, or a floating pad that generates negative pressure and positive pressure by photoresist processing or the like. It is. The rail or pad width at the outflow end of the air bearing surface is preferably wider in order to reduce the inspection time, and the flying height of the left and right rails or pads is preferably equal.
Since the glide head as described in
In the glide head described in
The width of the rail or pad at the outflow end of the air bearing surface is preferably wide in order to reduce the inspection time, but if it is too wide, the glide head will float too much and the projection detection accuracy will be reduced. However, if the rail or pad width at the outflow end is narrowed, the inspection time becomes longer and the number of protrusion defects per rail is determined by the relationship between the head feed pitch and the rail or pad width. If the width is narrow, there is a problem that the probability of allowing the projection defect to pass through increases and the inspection accuracy decreases.

The step of inspecting the protrusion on the surface of the protective film includes rotating the magnetic disk at the stage of applying the lubricant, floating the glide head on the magnetic disk, and rails on one side of the outflow end rail of the glide head. It is desirable to move the magnetic disk in the radial direction at a feed pitch such that the contact between the protrusion and the protrusion is at least four times per protrusion.

Further, according to the present invention, it is possible to provide a glide head assembly with high detection accuracy of protrusion defects.
Furthermore, according to the present invention, a method for manufacturing a magnetic disk with few protrusion defects can be provided.
Hereinafter, embodiments of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the drawings. 1A, 1B, and 1C are diagrams showing a configuration of a glide head according to an embodiment. FIG. 1A is a view from the air bearing surface side, FIG. 1B is a view from the air outflow end side, and FIG. 1C is a side view. It is. FIG. 2 is a side view of the glide head supported by the suspension. 3A, 3B, and 3C show a configuration of a glide head that is conventionally used as Comparative Example 1. FIG.
1A, 1B and 1C, a
The
The
The
FIG. 2 shows a
A glide head 30 (Comparative Example 1) shown in FIGS. 3A, 3B, and 3C is a type of glide head in which a
The glide test was performed by flying (scanning) the
The configuration of the magnetic disk used for the glide inspection is shown in FIG. The
FIG. 6 shows the outputs of the
Further, when comparing the output width corresponding to the rail width of each glide head, the embodiment is wider and corresponds to a slider width of 240 μm, but in Comparative Example 1, the width corresponding to a rail width of 150 μm. It has become. When the head feed pitch is 60 μm, contact is observed 4 times / rail in the example and 2 times / rail in the comparative example 1.
Next, FIG. 7 shows the result of comparing the output between the example and the comparative example 1 while contacting the same protrusion. It can be seen that the output of the example is about three times the output of Comparative Example 1. In the case of the embodiment, since the cross-cut processing is performed, the flying posture of the head stands, the pitch angle is large, the distance between the protrusion defect and the
Next, the relationship between the piezo element output and the output fluctuation at the time of protrusion contact was analyzed in detail. The contact signal is measured from the small to large piezoelectric element output at the time of projection contact with the glide head of Example and Comparative Example 1, and the output fluctuation amount when the single projection is contacted (piezo from one projection contact) The standard deviation of the element output) was determined. The results are shown in FIG. In FIG. 8, solid symbols indicate examples, and white symbols indicate comparative example 1. There is no difference in the tendency between Comparative Example 1 and Example, and in both cases, the output fluctuation increases as the output of the piezo element increases. For example, in the case of 500mV output, the output fluctuation is about 150mV. That is, the piezo element output detected by contact is observed with such an output fluctuation, and this becomes an error in protrusion detection, and the inspection slip is allowed with a certain probability. FIG. 9 shows an estimation of the protrusion detection slip-through error when the protrusion detection threshold value and the protrusion detection average piezo element output average value are the same.
In FIG. 9, the horizontal axis represents the number of protrusion contact times, and the vertical axis represents the slip-through probability. When the number of protrusions is one, the probability of slipping is 50%, and when it is two, 0.5 2 = 25%. When the feed pitch of the glide head is 60 μm, in Comparative Example 1, the head output unbalance is large and the rail width is narrow, so that the projection contact signal is observed twice, but the slip-through error is as large as 25%. In the embodiment, there is no output imbalance of the glide head, and the rail width is larger than that of Comparative Example 1. Therefore, the inspection can be performed under inspection conditions in which the left and right sliders are in contact with the
In the glide head according to the above embodiment, rails (pads) 8 are formed on the left and right sides on the outflow end side, but an example in which the
As described above, the glide head according to the embodiment of the present invention is effective in improving the accuracy of glide inspection of a magnetic disk, and enables glide inspection of a magnetic disk suitable for high density recording.
