Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a developing device and an image forming apparatus that develop an electrostatic latent image formed on an image carrier with a developer, and in particular, the developer is transported using a traveling wave electric field to be formed on the image carrier. The present invention relates to a developing device that visualizes a developed electrostatic latent image, and an image forming apparatus including the developing device.
As a developing device applied to an image forming apparatus using an electrophotographic process such as a copying machine or a printer, a non-contact type which performs development without bringing a developer carrier into contact with an image carrier (photoreceptor) at present. A developing device has been attracting attention, and a powder cloud method, a jumping method, or a method using an electric field curtain (traveling wave electric field) has been proposed.
As an apparatus using an electric field curtain, for example, a power source that generates a plurality of types of alternating voltages having different phases from each other, and a plurality of electrodes arranged at predetermined intervals on a substrate are supplied with an alternating voltage from the power source. There has been proposed a developing device including a developer transport member that transports a developer toward an image carrier by forming a traveling wave electric field by application (see, for example,
In addition, regarding the technology using the traveling wave electric field, the applicant of the present invention sets the relationship between the developing gap d between the developer conveying member and the image carrier and the pitch λ between the electrodes in the developer conveying member as d> λ. A developing device for improving image uniformity (see, for example, Patent Document 3), and an appropriate setting of a developing gap, an image carrier film thickness, a developing potential condition, etc. for the purpose of reducing the edge effect and improving image quality (For example, refer to Patent Document 4).
By the way, when the developer is transported in a cloud state by a traveling wave electric field and development is performed in a non-contact state with the image carrier, the following problems occur depending on the developer transport conditions and the development gap setting. .
In recent years, high-quality image forming apparatuses comparable to photographs typified by ink jet printers and the like have been developed, and higher image quality is also required in image formation using a developer. In addition, in order to save energy in the fixing process, reduce running costs, and further reduce the size of the apparatus by reducing the volume of the developer container, attempts have been made to reduce the consumption of developer while maintaining the necessary concentration. ing. One technical approach to achieve this is to make the developer particles smaller and to increase the content of colorants (e.g., carbon black, organic pigments) in the developer and record. There is a trend to form higher quality images by reducing the thickness of images on paper. In forming such an image, it is necessary to uniformly develop a thin layer of a smaller amount of developer than in the past in the stage of forming a developer image on the image carrier.
As a result of research conducted by the present inventors, a new problem has been found that arises by developing a thin layer in an amount approximately corresponding to one or two developer layers. The amount of developer on the image carrier during thin layer development here is about R × 0.1 (mg / cm 2 ) or less, where R (μm) is the volume average particle size of the developer. Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 2004-259259 describes an idea that mainly suppresses a phenomenon in which a developer gathers at an edge portion of an electrostatic latent image and a contour of an image becomes thick when a development gap is too wide. In the case where the amount of developer to be developed is relatively large, this basically gives a good result by setting conditions in the direction of narrowing the development gap.
However, as described above, in the development of a thin layer, even in the proper range, under the relatively wide development gap condition, the vicinity of the edge of the image is not developed, and the contour portion of the image can be lost. 4 may exhibit the opposite behavior to the technique described in 4.
As a measure for reducing the thinning phenomenon of the edge portion of the electrostatic latent image when this thin layer development is performed, it is effective to set conditions for further narrowing the development gap. On the other hand, in the above-mentioned
Therefore, the present invention has been made to solve the above-described problem. From the viewpoint of high-speed printing, a method of narrowing the development gap without setting the pitch between the electrodes of the developer conveying member narrow. An image forming apparatus capable of suppressing the thinning phenomenon of an electrostatic latent image edge portion without using the image forming apparatus, and an image forming apparatus that achieves both high-speed printing and high image quality by including the developing apparatus. It is.
As described above, the developing device using a traveling wave electric field for transporting the developer includes, as described above, a developing device having only a developer transport member having a traveling wave generating electrode, the developer transport member, and the developer. The developing device is roughly divided into a developing device that includes a belt member that covers the surface of the conveying member and moves on the surface in the developer conveying direction. The developing device of the present invention can be configured as any of these developing devices.
First, in the developing device of the present invention having only the developer conveying member, the electrostatic latent image formed on the surface of the moving image carrier is visualized and developed as a developer image by the developer in the developing area. A plurality of traveling wave generating electrodes arranged at a predetermined interval on a substrate, and a plurality of types of alternating voltages having different phases are applied to each traveling wave generating electrode. In the developing device including the developer transport member that transports the developer to the development area by the traveling wave electric field formed by the image forming apparatus, the image bearing member is disposed on the downstream side of the development area in the moving direction, and An image correction member to which a voltage including a voltage component is applied is provided, and the electrostatic latent image is rearranged and developed by an electric field generated by the image correction member with the developer attached to the developer image. Yes. In the above developing device, the image correction member is preferably disposed on the downstream side in the developer transport direction.
According to the above-described developing device, it is possible to suppress the edge thinness of the developer image, which has conventionally occurred due to the influence of the electric field around the edge of the electrostatic latent image on the image carrier. That is, in the developing device described above, an image correction member is disposed on the downstream side in the developing region in the moving direction of the image carrier, and an alternating voltage is applied to the image correction member, thereby developing the bias toward the electrostatic latent image edge portion. The agent image is peeled off once, and again adhered to the image carrier, and the electrostatic latent image is rearranged and developed. At this time, the developer can be attached to the electrostatic latent image edge portion by the action of a strong alternating electric field by the image correction member, and the image defect of the electrostatic latent image edge portion can be corrected. In addition, effects such as uniform image density and removal of ground cover are also produced.
Vmax=|VDC|+1/2VPP
Vmin=|VDC|−1/2VPP
X=(Vmax)−|VL|=(|VDC|+1/2VPP)−|VL|
Y=|V0|−(Vmin)=|V0|−(|VDC|−1/2VPP)
In the above developing device, when the peak-to-peak voltage of the alternating voltage component of the voltage applied to the image correction member is V PP and the DC voltage component is V DC ,
The maximum absolute value of the voltage applied to the
The minimum value of the absolute value of the voltage applied to the
It becomes. Therefore, the potential of the non-image part on the surface of the image carrier is set to V 0, and the potential of the image part on the surface of the image carrier is set to V L.
X = (Vmax) − | V L | = (| V DC | + 1 / 2V PP ) − | V L |
Y = | V 0 | − (Vmin) = | V 0 | − (| V DC | −1 / 2V PP )
Then, it is preferable that the peak-to-peak voltage V PP and the DC voltage component V DC of the alternating voltage component of the voltage applied to the image correction member are voltages satisfying X> Y.
The above X is the maximum potential difference between the image portion where the electrostatic latent image is formed on the surface of the image carrier and the image correction member, and Y is the static potential on the surface of the image carrier. This is the maximum potential difference between the non-image portion, which is a portion where no electrostatic latent image is formed, and the image correction member. By satisfying the above X> Y, the electric field in the developing direction can be strengthened with respect to the developer having a desired polarity when the rearrangement development is performed with the developer adhering to the developer image. Can be prevented. If X> Y is not satisfied, the amount of the developer adhering to the developer image on the image carrier moves to the image correction member increases, and the amount of developer used for development in the development region decreases. This is because the image density tends to decrease.
In the developing device, the image correction member has a cylindrical shape and the axis thereof is arranged substantially parallel to the surface of the image carrier, and the moving direction of the surface of the image carrier and the image carrier in the image correction member It is preferable that the moving direction of the surface facing the surface is rotated in the opposite direction. By doing so, scattering of the developer flying between the image correction member and the image carrier can be suppressed.
The developing device may include a removing member that removes the developer attached to the image correction member. In this way, the developer attached to the image correction member can be collected and reused.
Next, the developing device of the present invention including the developer conveying member and the belt member can be configured by including the belt member in the developing device of the present invention including only the developer conveying member. . That is, the developing device of the present invention including the developer conveying member and the belt member covers the surface of the developer conveying member in each of the developing devices of the present invention including only the developer conveying member, and A belt member that moves in the developer conveying direction on the surface, and a developer layer is formed on the belt member, and the belt member is formed in a region where a traveling wave electric field is formed by the developer conveying member; The developer of the developer layer is configured to be transferred.
In the developing device of the present invention including the developer conveying member and the belt member, the image correction member is cylindrical and the axis thereof is disposed substantially parallel to the surface of the image carrier. The moving direction of the surface and the moving direction of the surface facing the surface of the image carrier of the image correction member are rotated so as to be opposite to each other, and are arranged in contact with the belt member. Also good.
By doing in this way, the adhesiveness of a traveling wave generation electrode and the belt of a belt member can be improved, and stable developer conveyance can be performed.
Further, in the developing device of the present invention provided with the developer conveying member and the belt member, a collecting electrode is provided at a position facing the image correction member via the belt member, and the development adhered to the image correction member. The agent may move and adhere to the belt member by the electric field generated by the collecting electrode.
By doing so, the developer attached to the image correction member can be attracted toward the belt member, and the developer attached to the image correction member can be easily removed. Fixing can be prevented, and the life of the image correction member can be extended.
In addition, an image forming apparatus can be configured using each of the developing devices of the present invention. In this image forming apparatus, in the developing device used in the image forming apparatus, the edge of the developer image on the image carrier is suppressed, and the decrease in the amount of developer used for development in the developing area is suppressed. In addition, a decrease in image density can be suppressed.
According to the developing device of the present invention, the image correction member to which a voltage including an alternating voltage component is applied is disposed on the downstream side in the moving direction of the image carrier in the development region, and the image correction member is Since it is disposed on the downstream side in the developer conveyance direction, the edge of the developer image, which has been often caused by the influence of the electric field wrap around the edge of the electrostatic latent image on the image carrier, has been conventionally known. Stable image formation can be performed without disturbing the state of transport of the developer before the development process.
In the present invention, the peak-to-peak voltage of the alternating voltage component of the voltage applied to the image correction member is V PP , the DC voltage component is V DC , the non-image portion potential of the image carrier is V 0 , and the image portion When the potential is V L , X = (| V DC | + 1 / 2V PP ) − | V L |, Y = | V 0 | − (| V DC | −1 / 2V PP ), X> Y is satisfied. Thus, when rearranged development is performed with the developer attached to the developer image, the electric field in the developing direction can be strengthened with respect to the developer having a desired polarity, and development used for development in the development area A decrease in the amount of the agent can be suppressed, and a decrease in the image density can be suppressed.
In addition, according to the image forming apparatus of the present invention, in the developing device used in the image forming apparatus, the edge of the developer image on the image carrier is suppressed and development used for development in the developing area is performed. Since the decrease in the amount of the agent can be suppressed and the decrease in the image density can be suppressed, an image forming apparatus that achieves both high-speed printing and high image quality can be realized.
Hereinafter, embodiments of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the drawings.

例えば、ABS(アクリロニトリルブタジエンスチレン)樹脂等を挙げることができる。
The

The
Further, the
A voltage obtained by superimposing alternating current on direct current is applied to the
By applying this voltage, the following effects can be obtained. Conventionally, as shown in FIG. 5, the developer image of the electrostatic latent image formed on the surface of the
The voltage applied to the
Vmax=|VDC|+1/2VPP
Vmin=|VDC|−1/2VPP
X=(Vmax)−|VL|=(|VDC|+1/2VPP)−|VL|
Y=|V0|−(Vmin)=|V0|−(|VDC|−1/2VPP)

Further, the potential of the non-image portion on the surface of the
X = (Vmax) − | V L | = (| V DC | + 1 / 2V PP ) − | V L |
Y = | V 0 | − (Vmin) = | V 0 | − (| V DC | −1 / 2V PP )
Then, V PP and V DC are set to voltages that satisfy X> Y.
For example, the rotation speed of the
By satisfying the above conditions, the following effects can be obtained. That is, the above X is the maximum voltage between the image portion that is the portion where the electrostatic latent image is formed on the surface of the image carrier and the

In the first embodiment, the
Further, as described above, the surface of the

Next, as another example of the developing device of the present invention used in the image forming apparatus X of
First, in the case of the developing

The
As shown in FIG. 9, the
The
The
The
The developer layer is formed on the
For example, a thin developer layer (approx. 0.2 to 2 mg / cm 2 ) is formed on the
As a method of forming the developer layer on the
In the developing
The

Furthermore, in this example, in order to make the

Further, the

Further, the position where the
In the case of the developing
In the second embodiment, the
In this case, the
In the second embodiment, as shown in FIG. 11, the collecting
In this case, if the voltage applied to the collecting
Further, by providing a difference between the voltage applied to the collecting
