Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to the structure of an electrode such as a fuel cell and the configuration of the fuel cell, and more particularly to an electrochemical element using a porous electrode using a noble metal alternative electrode catalyst and a method for manufacturing the same.
With the growing interest in global environmental issues, resource saving and energy saving are being promoted. Development of energy sources and systems that use renewable clean energy as energy resources is underway. In particular, fuel cell systems that generate energy through chemical reactions using hydrogen as an energy source have a wide range of applications such as alternative technologies for automobile engines, distributed power sources, and cogeneration technologies. In addition, with the widespread use of mobile terminal devices such as mobile phones and laptop computers, they are also expected as power sources for them.
A fuel cell is mainly composed of a fuel electrode that reacts with fuel such as hydrogen from fuel to generate electrons and protons, an electrolyte that transmits the generated protons, and oxygen that reacts protons and oxygen with electrons that have reached through an external circuit. It consists of poles. The reaction of H 2 → 2H + + 2e − and O 2 + 4H + + 4e − → 2H 2 O will proceed at the fuel electrode and oxygen electrode, respectively. A porous electrode carrying a noble metal catalyst such as platinum on the body is used.
The electrolyte is composed of a material having proton conductivity, such as a fluorine polymer film having a sulfonic acid group in the side chain, a hydrated oxide such as tungsten oxide or molybdenum oxide, or a solid acid such as polyphosphoric acid or polytungstic acid. A complex or the like can be used. In general, a Nafion membrane using SO 4 F groups for proton transfer is often used as one that causes little reduction in cell efficiency due to diffusion of fuel or the like into the electrolyte. Further, as another electrolyte material, a heteropoly acid using an H 3 O + group for proton transfer has also attracted attention (see, for example, Patent Document 1).
However, in the conventional structure, it is not an easy technique to form an electrolyte coating film in the catalyst layer on the catalyst surface in the pores of the thick catalyst layer so thin that the gas diffusion characteristics are not impaired.
Therefore, it is not easy to produce a high-performance battery with a conventional electrode in which an electrolyte is applied to a catalyst layer with a large low concentration polarization.
In addition, since noble metal catalysts used for porous electrodes are rare and expensive, an inexpensive alternative catalyst has been demanded in consideration of general-purpose popular batteries such as mobile applications.
The present invention solves the above-mentioned conventional problems, and an object thereof is to provide an electrochemical element that does not cause a voltage drop at the interface between an electrode and an electrolyte.
In order to solve the conventional problems, the electrochemical device of the present invention includes an electrode in which a catalyst is supported on a porous body, and an electrolyte that conducts protons between the electrode, and the electrode and the electrolyte. In either case, the constituent material has at least a heteropolyacid. With this configuration, it is possible to reduce the voltage drop at the interface, and it is not necessary to use an expensive noble metal catalyst.
According to the electrochemical element of the present invention, it is possible to reduce a decrease in battery output due to a voltage drop, and to configure the constituent materials of electrodes and electrolytes with inexpensive materials.
Embodiments of the present invention will be described below with reference to the drawings.
(Embodiment 1)
FIG. 1 is a configuration diagram of a fuel cell according to Embodiment 1 of the present invention. In FIG. 1, reference numeral 1 denotes a fuel electrode that reacts with a fuel such as hydrogen to generate electrons and protons. The fuel electrode 1 and an
The electrode catalyst in each of the fuel electrode 1 and the oxygen electrode 2 is considered to become more efficient as the amount of the surface on which the reaction occurs to increase the reaction active point and the specific surface area of the catalyst are increased. For this reason, it is necessary to reduce the catalyst particle size, for example, to control the size of the nano-particle, and to use a porous body for the support to increase the reaction surface area, particularly nanometer-sized nanopores with voids on the nanometer level. It is desirable to use a porous body. In general, nanoporous materials are composed of a conductor that easily conducts electrons, such as metals, carbon, and conductive oxides, in order to supply electrons used for electrode reactions to reaction active sites. It is considered excellent. However, if the catalyst particles are nano-sized and form a conduction path, electrons can be tunnel-conducted, so the porous body on which the catalyst particles are supported is an insulator such as silica. It doesn't matter.
Further, unlike the fuel electrode 1, the oxygen electrode 2 needs to secure a transmission path of protons, electrons, oxygen, and water, which is a product of these, accompanying the electrode reaction. Furthermore, in order to increase reaction active sites, it is desirable that the porous body is composed of a low-density nanoporous body, and finely divided catalyst particles are efficiently dispersed therein.
In the above, in the combination of the oxygen electrode 2 (or the fuel electrode 1) and the
Therefore, in the present embodiment, heteropolyacid is used as the main material constituting the catalyst particles and the
Here, the heteropolyacid is a metal cluster represented by a typical molecular formula H 3 MaMb 12 O 40 (Ma and Mb are a first element and a second element, respectively) and oxygen atoms arranged in a regular arrangement. It is a group of substances used as structural units, and is a generic name for condensed acids containing oxygen and two or more elements, and is a compound for isopolyacids. The first element is selected from the group consisting of phosphorus, silicon, and germanium. In particular, the first element may be phosphorus.
In addition, examples of the second element include molybdenum (Mo), tungsten (W), vanadium (V), niobium (Nb), and tantalum (Ta).
Furthermore, a part of hydrogen of the heteropolyacid may be substituted with a third element. The third element may be one type, two types, or more. The third element is cesium (Cs), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), titanium (Ti), cerium (Ce), samarium (Sm), ytterbium (Yb), iron (Fe), copper ( It is good to be selected from the group consisting of Cu).
The above heteropolyacid uses a solution growth method as one production method. A sodium hydrate salt composed of a metal element constituting a target product is reacted in a solution under control of reaction temperature, degree of stirring and reaction time. Separation from by-products such as sodium chloride can be performed by recrystallization using the difference in solubility of the substance in the organic solvent, and as a result, a powdery target substance can be obtained.
Among the above heteropoly acids, it is preferable to use polymolybdenum silicic acid (H 3 SiMo 12 O 40 ) having excellent catalytic activity as catalyst particles in the oxygen electrode 2 (or the fuel electrode 1). On the other hand, as the
As described above, in the present invention, voltage drop can be suppressed by configuring the oxygen electrode 2 (or the fuel electrode 1) and the
Furthermore, reduce the volume ratio of the heteropolyacid from the electrolyte to the electrode side, or modify the interface by substituting elements from a heteropolyacid species with high proton conductivity to a heteropolyacid species with high catalytic ability. It is effective to change the composition or composition ratio at the interface. This facilitates the movement of protons and the movement of water through the hydration layer in the constituent material, and can reduce the voltage drop at the interface, thereby constituting a battery having output power characteristics that exceed conventional ones. Can do.
By the way, it is thought that the water produced | generated by the oxygen electrode 2 is maintaining the gaseous water vapor state with the produced | generated heat in the operating temperature range (for example, 80 to 120 degreeC) of the solid electrolyte of the conventional fuel cell. Therefore, as shown in FIG. 10, the periphery of the oxygen electrode 2 other than the interface between the oxygen electrode 2 and the
Also, depending on the battery usage environment, all of the generated water may be liquefied when used in the temperature range near or below room temperature. In this case, conventionally, there is a higher possibility that the heteropolyacid catalyst fixed to the porous body of the oxygen electrode 2 will be washed away by the generated water and discharged out of the system. For this reason, high utility arises in preventing discharge | emission of heteropoly acid by coat | covering the surroundings of the electrodes 1 and 2 which consist of porous with the coating layer 5 as mentioned above. At this time, the generated water tends to propagate as water vapor to the
The coating layer 5 used here is a porous film imparted with water repellency, and is a film that allows gas such as oxygen, air, and hydrogen to pass through but does not allow water and water vapor to pass through due to water repellency. A fluororesin represented by polytetrafluoroethylene and a water-repellent carbon black represented by acetylene black are desirable. Furthermore, a film in which carbon fluoride is diffused in acetylene black is desirable in order to further prevent permeation of oxygen gas or the like.
Hereinafter, the formation method of the coating layer 5 is demonstrated. As an example, commercially available acetylene black and polytetrafluoroethyl vinyl ether, which is a fluororesin, are mixed and sintered at a weight ratio of 1: 1 to produce a porous film having a thickness of 0.5 mm. In order to further impart water repellency, a fluorine gas diluted to 10 mol% with nitrogen at a fluorination temperature of 400 ° C. is supplied at a flow rate of 1 liter / min and fluorinated for 0.5 hours to form a water repellant film and heat roll It may be covered with.
Note that the film is not limited to acetylene black and polytetrafluoroethyl vinyl ether, and may be any film as long as it is a mixture of fluororesin and water repellent carbon black and has excellent water repellency, and the production method is not limited to sintering. Also, the coating method is not limited to the heat roll.
Further, since the periphery of the porous electrode is coated and packaged with the coating layer 5, the disadvantage that the heteropolyacid is a strong acid and corrodes the battery constituent material can be eliminated.
In addition, a heteropolyacid can be used as an electrode catalyst for the fuel electrode 1, but as with the oxygen electrode 2, a more efficient battery can be constructed by using the electrode covered with the coating layer 5. . In this case, the hydration of the fuel electrode catalyst can be maintained by supplying moisture from the air electrode side via the electrolyte. As a result, the catalyst of the fuel electrode 1, the

It is desirable to use a heteropolyacid that is a hydrate as the filled material, but it may be a gel containing water in a space such as a water-soluble crosslinking position.
With the above configuration, the buffer layer 4 functions to prevent water from passing through by filling the holes of the hydrophobic porous film with a hydrophilic material to form a nonporous film having substantially no holes.
