Abstract
Description
【0001】

TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a printing device and an ink cartridge.
[0002]
[Prior art]
As one form of a printing apparatus such as an inkjet printer, there is a printing apparatus to which a plurality of ink cartridges can be attached. Ink is stored in each ink cartridge, and the printing apparatus receives a supply of ink from the mounted ink cartridge and executes a printing operation.
In such a printing apparatus, it is necessary to prevent the printing process from being interrupted due to running out of ink contained in the ink cartridge during printing. From such a viewpoint, the control unit provided in the printing apparatus main body manages the used amount or the remaining amount of the ink. In addition, a non-volatile memory that stores information indicating the used amount or the remaining amount of the ink is provided in the ink cartridge. This nonvolatile memory cannot have much information due to downsizing and cost reduction. Therefore, after information indicating the used amount or the remaining amount of the ink is stored in the memory of the printing apparatus main body, only the information is appropriately written in the non-volatile memory provided in the ink cartridge.
[0003]
However, if the power is suddenly turned off for some reason, such as when the outlet is suddenly disconnected, the information indicating the used or remaining amount of ink stored in the memory of the printing apparatus main body is deleted. Resulting in. When such a situation occurs, the printing apparatus cannot accurately manage the used amount or the remaining amount of the ink, and may cause inconvenience such as running out of ink during printing. On the other hand, if the printing apparatus frequently writes information to the nonvolatile memory, the printing speed is reduced.
Therefore, the ejection amount of the ejected ink is integrated, and when the integrated value reaches the threshold value, the information is written to the nonvolatile memory provided in the ink cartridge in which the integrated value has reached the threshold value.
[0004]

[0005]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
Conventionally, it has been considered that the timing at which the integrated value reaches the threshold value and the timing at which a predetermined amount of ink in the ink cartridge is used coincide. However, since the amount of ink droplets ejected varies depending on the use environment (for example, the temperature and humidity in the use room), the timing at which the integrated value reaches a threshold value and the timing at which a predetermined amount of ink in the ink cartridge is used are determined. Shift occurs between them. Therefore, the timing of writing information to the nonvolatile memory is shifted, and accurate information may not be written to the nonvolatile memory.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It is an object of the present invention to effectively manage information on each ink cartridge by writing accurate information to an element (non-volatile memory) provided in the ink cartridge.
[0006]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a carriage including a plurality of cartridges each including an element capable of writing information, a detachable carriage, and a head mounted on the carriage for discharging ink from the cartridge. A writing member for writing information to the element, wherein the ink consumption is measured for each cartridge, and when the consumption measured for a certain cartridge reaches a threshold value, the element provided in the cartridge And a printing device in which the writing member writes the information. The printing apparatus can detect that the amount of ink in the cartridge has reached a predetermined amount, and set the threshold value to a predetermined value before detecting that the amount of ink in the cartridge has reached a predetermined amount. After detecting that the amount of ink in the cartridge has reached a predetermined amount, the threshold value is set based on the consumption amount measured until the amount of ink in the cartridge reaches a predetermined amount. Set.
Other features of the present invention will become apparent from the description of the present specification and the accompanying drawings.
[0007]
BEST MODE FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION
=== Disclosure Overview ===
At least the following matters will become apparent from the description of the present specification and the accompanying drawings.
A carriage capable of attaching and detaching a plurality of cartridges having an element capable of writing information,
A head for discharging the ink of the cartridge mounted on the carriage,
A writing member for writing information to the element;
With
Measuring the consumption of the ink for each cartridge,
When the consumption amount measured for a certain cartridge reaches a threshold value, a printing device in which the writing member writes the information to an element provided in the cartridge,
The printing device,
It is possible to detect that the ink in the cartridge has reached a predetermined amount,
Before detecting that the ink in the cartridge has reached a predetermined amount, the threshold is set to a predetermined value,
After detecting that the amount of ink in the cartridge has reached a predetermined amount, the threshold value is set based on the consumption amount measured until the amount of ink in the cartridge reaches a predetermined amount.
According to such a printing apparatus, information about each ink cartridge can be effectively managed by writing accurate information to elements provided in the ink cartridge. That is, the timing of using a predetermined amount of ink in the ink cartridge can be matched with the timing of writing information to the element.
[0008]
In this printing apparatus, it is preferable that a threshold value before detecting that the amount of ink in the cartridge reaches a predetermined amount is set based on information read from the element. According to such a printing apparatus, the threshold value set first can be set to a threshold value corresponding to the cartridge.
[0009]
In such a printing apparatus, after detecting that the amount of ink in the cartridge has reached a predetermined amount, the printing apparatus measures the amount of ink until the amount of ink in the cartridge reaches a predetermined amount. It is desirable to set the threshold based on the consumed amount. Further, it is preferable that the printing device obtains the predetermined amount based on information read from an element provided in the cartridge. Further, the printing apparatus calculates the actual amount of the ink droplet based on the predetermined amount and the consumption amount measured until the ink in the cartridge reaches the predetermined amount. It is preferable to set the threshold value according to the amount of the ink droplet. Further, it is preferable that a threshold value set after the sensor detects that the amount of ink in the cartridge has reached a predetermined amount decreases as the actual amount of the ink droplet increases. According to such a printing apparatus, the threshold value can be set according to the actual amount of ink droplets, so that the timing of using a predetermined amount of ink in the ink cartridge and the timing of writing information to the element are matched. be able to.
[0010]
In this printing apparatus, it is desirable that the consumption amount corresponds to the driving amount of the head. Further, it is preferable that the driving amount of the head corresponds to the number of ink droplets ejected by the head. According to such a printing apparatus, it is possible to calculate the amount of ink droplets actually ejected from the head. Further, it is preferable that the driving amount of the head includes at least one of a driving amount of a head for forming dots and a driving amount of a head for preventing nozzle clogging. Since the head is driven to eject ink when printing or performing a flushing process or the like, according to such a printing apparatus, it is possible to calculate the amount of ink droplets actually ejected from the head. .
[0011]
In such a printing apparatus, it is desirable that the consumption amount corresponds to the amount of ink sucked from the outside of the head. Since the ink is consumed not only when the head is driven but also when the ink is sucked from the outside of the head, such a printing apparatus can measure the amount of ink actually consumed. It is.
[0012]
In such a printing apparatus, when detecting that the amount of ink in the cartridge has reached a predetermined amount, the writing member sets the information regarding the predetermined amount as information regarding the amount of ink in the cartridge, and It is desirable to write to the element provided in the device. According to such a printing apparatus, accurate information can be written to the elements provided in the cartridge.
[0013]
In a cartridge that can be attached to and detached from the printing apparatus main body and that can store ink,
An element for storing information;
A sensor for detecting that the contained ink has reached a predetermined amount,
Has,
The element is
Information on the amount of ink initially contained in the cartridge;
Information about the predetermined amount;
Information on ink consumption,
Is stored.
According to such an ink cartridge, since information for writing accurate information in the elements provided in the ink cartridge is stored in the elements, information on each ink cartridge can be effectively managed. That is, the element of the cartridge can have information for matching the timing of using a predetermined amount of ink in the ink cartridge with the timing of writing information to the element.
[0014]
In the cartridge, it is preferable that the cartridge has a plurality of the sensors, and the element stores a plurality of pieces of information on the predetermined amount corresponding to each sensor. According to such a cartridge, the element can store information for writing more accurate information.
[0015]
In such a cartridge, it is preferable that the sensor detects a position of a liquid surface of the ink in the cartridge. According to such a cartridge, the predetermined amount can be set according to the mounting position of the sensor.
[0016]
In such a cartridge, it is preferable that the sensor has a piezoelectric element, and the piezoelectric element applies vibration to the inside of the cartridge, and the piezoelectric element detects vibration remaining in the cartridge. According to such a cartridge, since the member that applies vibration and the member that detects vibration are the same member, the size of the sensor can be reduced.
[0017]
In such a cartridge, it is preferable that the information on the amount of ink consumption includes information on the amount of ink used or the remaining amount of ink in the cartridge. Because, before the liquid level of the ink in the cartridge reaches the sensor, “information on the amount of ink initially contained in the cartridge (for example, initial ink capacity information)” and “the amount of ink used in the cartridge or This is because “information about ink consumption” can be indirectly obtained based on information about the remaining amount (for example, the initial usage amount). In the cartridge, it is preferable that the information on the ink consumption includes information on a reset threshold value. Because, after the liquid level of the ink in the cartridge reaches the sensor, the information based on “information on the used amount or remaining amount of the ink in the cartridge (for example, initial used amount)” and “information on the reset threshold” is used. This is because it is possible to indirectly obtain “information about the amount of ink consumption”.

Before the ink amount in the ink cartridge reaches Q, the frequency of the residual vibration is low. Therefore, when the amount of ink in the ink cartridge reaches Q, the liquid level of the ink in the ink cartridge has reached the position of the

Conversely, if the amount of ink droplets actually ejected is greater than the ideal amount of ink droplets, the printer will indicate that the ink in the ink cartridge is empty even if the ink in the ink cartridge is empty. The body cannot be grasped. As a result, even though the ink in the ink cartridge is empty, the user cannot be prompted to replace the cartridge, and the recording head continues to be driven with the ink running out.

An example of calculating the actual amount of ink droplet will be described. When the cartridge is manufactured, information on the “initial ink capacity”, “ideal ink droplet amount”, and “ink amount Q” is stored in the element. Here, the “initial ink capacity” is a capacity for 200,000 drops of an ideal amount of ink drops. The “ideal ink droplet amount” is 2 picoliter. Further, the “ink amount Q” is 20% of the initial ink volume (that is, when 80% of the initial ink volume (160,000 ideal ink droplets) is used, the

After the threshold resetting process is completed, the printing apparatus performs the writing process when the drive amount reaches the newly set threshold. When the threshold value is reset, the timing at which 0.5% of the initial ink capacity of the ink cartridge is used substantially coincides with the timing at which the bit data corresponding to the “initial usage amount” is incremented by one. Therefore, by resetting the threshold value, information substantially matching the actual ink amount in the ink cartridge is written into the elements provided in the ink cartridge.
[0077]
FIGS. 15A and 15B are graphs showing the relationship between the actual amount of ink in the ink cartridge and the amount of ink written to the element in the present embodiment.
FIG. 15A is a graph when the actual amount of ink droplets is larger than the ideal amount of ink droplets. First, since the actual amount of ink droplets is larger than the ideal amount of ink droplets, the actual amount of ink in the cartridge is used earlier than the timing of incrementing the bit data corresponding to the “initial use amount” by one. Is done. Therefore, the information written in the element deviates from the actual ink amount in the ink cartridge. However, in the present embodiment, when the

FIG. 15B is a graph when the actual amount of ink droplets is smaller than the ideal amount of ink droplets. First, since the actual amount of ink droplets is smaller than the ideal amount of ink droplets, the bit data corresponding to the “initial use amount” is incremented by one, rather than the amount of ink actually used in the cartridge. Timing is early. Therefore, the information written in the element deviates from the actual ink amount in the ink cartridge. However, in the present embodiment, when the bit data corresponding to the “initial use amount” reaches the data corresponding to the ink amount Q, the bit data is not incremented until the
[0079]
When a plurality of liquid level sensors are provided in the ink cartridge, information relating to a plurality of “ink amount according to the position of the sensor” is stored in an element provided in the ink cartridge. In this case, each time the liquid level of the ink in the ink cartridge reaches each liquid level sensor, the amount of ink corresponding to the liquid level sensor and the driving amount of the head until the liquid level reaches the liquid level sensor are determined. The threshold is reset based on the threshold. This allows the printer body to write more accurate information into the elements provided in the ink cartridge.
[0080]
Assuming that an ink cartridge that has already been used is to be mounted again, information relating to the amount of ink consumed, for example, information relating to the “drive amount of the recording head” is recorded in the element provided in the ink cartridge. There is a need. However, it is not necessary to directly record the “drive amount of the recording head” on the element. If the liquid level of the ink in the cartridge does not reach the sensor, the “initial use amount” becomes information on the “print head drive amount”. This is because the product of the “initial use amount” and the “first set threshold value (this value is obtained from the initial ink capacity information)” is substantially equal to the “print head drive amount”. After the ink level in the cartridge reaches the sensor, the “reset threshold value” and “initial use amount” become information on the “print head drive amount” (the ink consumption amount). Information). This is because the product of the "reset threshold value" and "initial usage amount" is substantially equal to "print head drive amount". After the liquid level in the cartridge reaches the sensor, the element stores “reset threshold value”. In this way, even if a cartridge that has already been used is mounted on the printer body, the drive amount (ink consumption amount) of the recording head for that cartridge can be continuously integrated. Thus, when the liquid level sensor of the cartridge detects the liquid level, the threshold value can be reset based on the continuously integrated drive amount.
[0081]
=== Other Embodiments ===
As described above, the printing apparatus and the like according to the present invention have been described based on several embodiments. It does not do. The present invention can be changed and improved without departing from the gist thereof, and it is needless to say that the present invention includes equivalents thereof.
[0082]
In the above embodiment, a non-contact IC chip was used as an element. However, the element is not limited to such a configuration as long as it can store information. For example, an element integrated with an antenna or the like It may be.
The ink cartridge may be configured to be capable of storing ink and detachable from the printing apparatus main body. For example, the ink cartridge may further include an ink discharge head and the like in addition to the ink storage unit. Is also good.

[0083]
In the above-described embodiment, the ink consumption is measured based on the “print head drive amount”. However, the method of measuring the ink consumption is not limited to the method of integrating the “print head driving amount”. For example, since the ink in the cartridge is consumed even when the
[0084]
The integrating means for integrating the ink ejection amount for each ink cartridge is not limited to the CPU and the program read by the CPU, but can also be realized by an electronic circuit dedicated to integration.
Writing information to the element is preferably performed in a non-contact state, but may be performed in a contact state.
The position of the printer body antenna serving as a writing member is not limited to the position (left non-printing area) described in the embodiment, and may be, for example, a right non-printing area.
[0085]
The selection based on the integration result of the integration means is not limited to the CPU and the program read by the CPU, but can also be realized by a dedicated electronic circuit for performing the selection.

[0086]
Instead of writing information indicating the used amount to the element, information indicating the remaining amount may be written. Also, the information indicating the usage amount or the remaining amount may be written, and the information to be written does not need to be the usage amount or the remaining amount itself. Any information may be used as long as the amount can be grasped directly or indirectly.
[0087]
The threshold value may be a value referred to in the comparison, and its unit may be liter, picoliter, or the like.
When the threshold value is set according to the capacity of the ink cartridge, the threshold value is not limited to 0.5% of the capacity. For example, the threshold value may be set in a plurality of steps having a predetermined range (large capacity, medium capacity, Threshold) may be set for each stage.
[0088]
Further, the inkjet printer according to the above-described embodiment may have some of the functions or mechanisms of the computer body, the display device, the input device, the flexible disk drive device, and the CD-ROM drive device. For example, as a configuration in which the printer has an image processing unit that performs image processing, a display unit that performs various displays, and a recording medium attaching / detaching unit for attaching / detaching a recording medium that records image data captured by a digital camera or the like. Is also good.
Further, in the above-described embodiment, an ink jet printer is used as a printing device. However, the present invention may be applied to, for example, a copying machine, a facsimile, a textile printing machine, etc. using an ink jet system.
[0089]
Although various invention components are disclosed in this specification and the accompanying drawings, it is essential for a printing apparatus that an ink cartridge provided for an element be detachable and information can be written to the element. It is a component, and it is an essential component of the ink cartridge to have an element. It goes without saying that various inventions can be realized by adding other components to these essential components arbitrarily in combination or independently.
