Abstract
Description
【0001】

このようにして構成された液晶パネル140の液晶モードとしては、TNモード、STNモード、ECB(Electrically Controlled Birefringence)モード等が望ましい。
【0139】
表示部105の液晶モードとしては、TN(Twisted Nematic)モード、STN(Super Twisted Nematic)モード、ECB(Electrically Controlled Birefringence)モード等が好ましい。

TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a display device and an electronic device including the same. In particular, the present invention relates to a display device and an electronic device having a structure capable of switching a display screen between a display mode and a mirror mode.
[0002]
[Prior art]
2. Description of the Related Art Conventionally, there has been known a display device configured to be able to switch between a display mode in which a normal display can be performed and a mirror mode in which the entire display surface is in a mirror state (for example, see Patent Document 1).
[0003]
In this display device, if the liquid crystal panel of the display switching unit is in a state of transmitting without changing the polarization axis, the first polarized light emitted from the display unit passes through the reflective polarizer and enters the liquid crystal panel. However, since the first polarized light is transmitted through the absorption polarizer and observed, the display mode of the display unit can be visually recognized. This is the operation in the display mode.
[0004]
Further, if the liquid crystal panel is in a state where the first polarized light is changed to the second polarized light and transmitted, the first polarized light emitted from the display unit passes through the reflective polarizer and enters the liquid crystal panel. The first polarized light is changed to the second polarized light by the liquid crystal panel and further absorbed by the absorbing polarizer, and the display mode is not visually recognized. At this time, when external light enters the device, the external light passes through the absorbing polarizer and becomes the first polarized light, and passes through the liquid crystal panel to become the second polarized light. Then, the light passes through the liquid crystal panel to change to the first polarized light, and passes through the absorbing polarizer. Therefore, the display surface is visually recognized in a mirror state. This is the operation in the mirror mode.

[Problems to be solved by the invention]
A display device capable of realizing both the display mode and the mirror mode as described above is very convenient because a device for displaying information can function as a mirror as needed. However, when this display device is used as a mirror at night or in other dark environments, there is a problem that the mirror image is dark and difficult to see, making it difficult to use. The present invention has been made in view of the above-described problems, and has as its object to provide a display device capable of realizing both a display mode and a mirror mode so that a bright mirror image can be recognized even in a dark environment. .
[0005]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
(1) In order to achieve the above object, a first display device according to the present invention includes a polarized light that transmits a first polarized light and reflects a second polarized light having a polarization axis crossing the polarization axis of the first polarized light. Selection means, display means for supplying the first polarized light to the polarization selection means, auxiliary lighting means for emitting light to the observation side of the polarization selection means, and display mode for emitting the first polarized light from the display means And a control unit for selectively realizing a mirror mode in which the first polarized light is not emitted from the display unit.
According to this display device, the polarization selecting means is configured to transmit the first polarized light and reflect the second polarized light. Therefore, when the first polarized light is emitted from the display means, the first polarized light is transmitted. Polarized light passes through the polarization selecting means and is emitted to the outside. Further, the first polarized light included in the external light passes through the polarization selecting unit and is incident on the side opposite to the observation side, and the second polarized light included in the external light is reflected by the polarization selecting unit.
[0006]
Here, strong light among the external light generally enters from a direction different from the direction in which the observer visually recognizes the light, so that strong regular reflection of the external light hardly enters the eyes of the observer. For this reason, in the display mode in which the display light is visually recognized from the display means through the polarization selection means, the display mode based on the display light emitted by the display means can be visually recognized.
[0007]
On the other hand, when the operation mode of the display device is in the mirror mode under the control of the control means, the first polarized light is not emitted from the display means, so that light does not reach the viewer from the display means. For this reason, the surface on the observation side of the polarization selecting means is visually recognized as a mirror surface by the reflected light of the external light.
[0008]
In the present invention, since the auxiliary illumination unit that emits light to the observation side of the polarization selection unit is provided, by turning on the auxiliary illumination unit in the mirror mode, even when the surroundings are dark, the observation side surface of the polarization selection unit is provided. A bright mirror image can be recognized.
[0009]
(2) Here, it is desirable that the auxiliary illumination unit is disposed on the observation side of the polarization selection unit. With this configuration, the auxiliary lighting means can be attached to the display device without changing the internal structure of the display device, which is preferable in terms of structure.
[0010]
(3) Further, it is desirable that the auxiliary illumination means is disposed at a distance of 0.3 mm to 10 cm, preferably 2 to 3 cm from an edge of the polarization selection means in a plane viewed from the observation side. The auxiliary lighting means is used as an illumination source when the display surface of the display device is used as a mirror. If the position of the auxiliary lighting means is too close to the display surface, the mirror is more difficult for the operator to see. It is possible. On the other hand, if the auxiliary lighting means is arranged at a certain distance from the display surface as described above, the display surface does not become difficult to see.
[0011]
(4) In the display device configured as described above, it is preferable that the control unit stops emitting light from the display unit in the mirror mode. This eliminates light leakage from the display surface functioning as a mirror surface, so that the quality of the mirror surface in the mirror mode can be further improved.
[0012]
(5) In the display device having the above-described configuration, it is preferable that the polarization selection region in the polarization selection unit is wider than a region overlapping the display region of the display unit. If the polarization selection area by the polarization selection means is wider than the area overlapping with the display area of the display means, the display means, for example, an electro-optical panel such as a liquid crystal panel, generally has a structure that extends beyond the display area. Since a portion, a so-called frame region, is required, in the range overlapping this structural portion, it is possible to enlarge the polarization selection area of the polarization selection means without increasing the planar dimensions of the display device. Therefore, it is possible to effectively use the internal space of the display device, and it is possible to relatively widen the range that can be visually recognized in a mirror mode in the mirror mode, that is, the area, with respect to the outer dimensions of the display device. it can.
[0013]
(6) In the display device of the present invention, it is preferable that the amount of light emitted in the normal direction is the largest with respect to the emission angle distribution of the display light of the display means. This makes it possible to increase the proportion of the display light that contributes to the display that can be seen by the observer, so that the influence of the external light reflection by the polarization selector can be reduced, and the display quality can be improved. be able to.
[0014]
(7) In this case, it is desirable that the display light is mainly distributed in an emission angle range of 0 ° to 40 °. In this range of the emission angle, the amount of incident external light is relatively small, so that display quality can be improved without being affected by the reflection of external light.
[0015]
(8) Further, it is desirable that the display light is not more than 1/50 of the amount of light in the normal direction within a range where the emission angle exceeds 45 °. Since the light in the range where the emission angle exceeds 45 ° hardly contributes to the display, the display mode can be efficiently configured by reducing unnecessary light.
[0016]
(9) In each of the display devices described above, it is preferable that the display unit is configured by an electro-optical device. In this case, a thin structure can be achieved, and a display device that can be applied to a portable device or the like can be realized. In particular, the display device of the present invention can be configured as a mirror-like display screen in the mirror mode by switching, and thus can be used as a hand mirror by a portable device.
[0017]
(10) Next, the second display device of the present invention includes a first polarization selection unit that transmits the first polarization and reflects a second polarization having a polarization axis that intersects the polarization axis of the first polarization, A transmission polarization axis changing unit that can convert at least a part of the third polarized light into the first polarized light and emit the fourth polarized light; and a fourth polarized light that transmits the third polarized light and has a polarization axis crossing the polarization axis of the third polarized light. And a supplementary illumination unit that emits light to the observation side of the first polarization selection unit.
[0018]
According to this display device, the external light is reflected by the first polarization selection means disposed on the observation side, for example, the reflective polarizing plate, so that the display screen is set to the mirror mode when there is no light emitted from the liquid crystal panel. Can be On the other hand, when there is light emitted from the liquid crystal panel, the display mode can be set. Here, the external light generally has a large amount of light obliquely incident on the observer, so that strong regular reflection light generated in the first polarization selecting unit due to the external light is not visually recognized by the observer. For this reason, the display quality in the display mode can be ensured by increasing the light emitted from the liquid crystal panel to some extent.
[0019]
Further, in the present invention, since the auxiliary illumination means for emitting light to the observation side of the polarization selection means is provided, by turning on the auxiliary illumination means in the mirror mode, even when the surroundings are dark, the observation side of the polarization selection means is provided. A bright mirror image can be recognized on the surface.
[0020]
In addition, it is preferable that the first polarization selection unit and the second polarization selection unit are arranged such that the polarization direction of the first polarization and the polarization of the third polarization are parallel or orthogonal to each other.
[0021]
(11) Also in the display device having this configuration, it is desirable that the auxiliary illumination unit is disposed on the observation side of the polarization selection unit. With this configuration, the auxiliary lighting means can be attached to the display device without changing the internal structure of the display device, which is preferable in terms of structure.
[0022]
(12) In the display device having the above configuration, it is preferable that another transmission polarization axis changing unit, for example, a liquid crystal panel, is not arranged on the observation side of the first polarization selection unit. If a variable transmission polarization axis such as a liquid crystal panel is arranged on the observation side, the contrast is reduced due to interface reflection, coloring due to the optical characteristics of the display switching unit, the viewing angle characteristics are deteriorated, and the displayed image is blurred. And the like, there is a possibility that the display quality is deteriorated. On the other hand, if another transmission polarization axis changing unit is not arranged on the observation side of the first polarization selection unit as described above, it is possible to avoid inconveniences such as a decrease in contrast caused by interface reflection as described above. . In addition, if another transmission polarization axis changing unit is not arranged on the observation side of the first polarization selection unit, a simple structure can be achieved without the need for a double panel structure. Weight can be reduced.
[0023]
(13) In the display device having the above configuration, a third polarization selection unit that transmits the first polarization and absorbs the second polarization is provided between the first polarization selection unit and the transmission polarization axis changing unit. Preferably, they are arranged. The polarization selectivity of a member available as a first polarization selection unit, for example, a reflection type polarizing plate, is generally lower than the polarization selectivity of an absorption type polarizing plate. However, by arranging the third polarization selecting means, for example, the absorption type polarizing plate, the polarization selectivity can be improved, and the display contrast can be increased.
(14) In this case, an illuminating means is provided on the back side of the second polarized light selecting means, and the second polarized light selecting means transmits the third polarized light and absorbs the fourth polarized light. It is preferable that a fourth polarization selection unit is provided between the illumination unit and the illumination unit, and the fourth polarization selection unit transmits the third polarization and reflects the fourth polarization. By doing so, the contrast and brightness of the display can be further increased.
[0024]
(15) In the display device having the above configuration, an illumination unit is provided on the back side of the second polarization selection unit, and the second polarization selection unit transmits the third polarization and absorbs the fourth polarization, A λ / 4 plate and a cholesteric liquid crystal layer between the second polarization selector and the illumination device, wherein the cholesteric liquid crystal layer transmits a predetermined polarization component and has a polarization component different from the predetermined polarization component; It is desirable to reflect light. In this case, the efficiency of using light from the lighting device can be improved.
[0025]
(16) In the display device configured as described above, the second polarization selection unit may be a device that transmits the third polarization and reflects the fourth polarization, for example, a reflection-type polarizing plate. Accordingly, when the liquid crystal panel is illuminated from the back side, light that does not pass through the second polarization selection unit out of the illuminating light can be reflected back to the back side, so that the reflected light is polarized by scattering or reflection. Can be changed and then returned to the observation side again, so that the display can be brightened.
[0026]
(17) In the display device configured as described above, it is preferable that a surface on the observation side of the first polarization selection unit is flat. With this configuration, the mirror surface state of the mirror mode can be realized more favorably, and scattered light other than the specular reflection light of the external light that enters the observer's eyes in the display mode can be reduced, so that the visibility of the display mode can be improved.
[0027]
(18) In the display device configured as described above, it is preferable that a transparent protective film is formed on the surface on the observation side of the first polarization selection unit. With this configuration, it is possible to prevent the surface of the first polarization selection unit on the observation side from being directly scratched or adhered with dust. In this case, it is desirable that the surface of the protective film be subjected to a curing treatment, or that a transparent hard film be formed.
[0028]
(19) In the display device having the above-described configuration, it is preferable that the illumination unit that emits light is disposed on the back side of the second polarization selection unit. By providing the illumination means in this manner, an image display state in the display mode can be reliably realized.
[0029]
(20) In this case, it is preferable that no light reflecting element that reflects external light toward the observation side in a manner contributing to display be disposed between the first polarization selection unit and the illumination unit. . Accordingly, since the light-reflecting element is not disposed inside the display body, a transmissive display body is formed. Therefore, the efficiency of use of the illumination unit for displaying light can be increased, and the first polarization selection unit can be used. Thus, even if there is reflection of external light due to, the display mode can be surely visually recognized. Note that the light-reflecting element includes a reflective layer or a reflector disposed in a pixel region where the reflected light can contribute to display, but does not include a metal light-shielding film or the like that generates reflected light that does not contribute to display. .
[0030]
(21) When the illumination means is not lit, it is preferable that the transmission polarization axis changing means does not emit the first polarized light. The mirror mode can be realized by turning off the lighting means or setting the display body in the light blocking state. However, by setting the lighting unit to the non-lighting state and setting the display body to the light blocking state, light leakage can be further reduced, so that the mirror surface state in the mirror mode can be configured more favorably.
[0031]
(22) In the display device having the above-described configuration, it is preferable that the polarization selection region of the first polarization selection unit is wider than a range overlapping with the transmission polarization axis variable region of the transmission polarization axis variable unit.
[0032]
The transmission polarization axis variable means, for example, a liquid crystal panel, generally requires a transmission polarization axis variable area, that is, a display area, a structure portion that protrudes more than the periphery, a so-called frame area. Therefore, it is possible to enlarge the polarization selection area of the first polarization selection means corresponding to the above-mentioned structure without increasing the size of the display device. As a result, the space inside the display device can be effectively used, and the range in which the display device can be visually recognized in a mirror mode in the mirror mode, that is, the area, is relatively increased with respect to the external dimensions of the display device. Can be.
[0033]
(23) In the display device having the above configuration, it is preferable that the amount of light emitted in the normal direction is the largest with respect to the emission angle distribution of the illumination light of the illumination means. By maximizing the amount of light emitted in the normal direction, it is possible to increase the ratio of the light contributing to the display to the observer's eyes among the illuminating light in the display mode. The influence of reflection can be reduced, and display quality can be improved.
[0034]
(24) In this case, it is desirable that the illuminating light of the illuminating means is mainly distributed in an emission angle range of 0 ° to 40 °. In this output angle range, the amount of specular reflection of external light is relatively small, so that display quality can be improved without being affected by the reflection of external light.
[0035]
(25) Further, it is preferable that the illumination light of the illumination means is not more than 1/50 of the amount of light in the normal direction within a range where the emission angle exceeds 45 °. Light in the range where the emission angle exceeds 45 ° hardly contributes to display. Therefore, by reducing unnecessary light, the display state in the display mode can be efficiently realized.
[0036]
(26) In the display device having the above configuration, it is preferable that a color filter is disposed on the back side of the first polarization selection unit. By arranging the color filter on the back side of the first polarization selection unit, color display can be performed in the display mode.
[0037]
(27) In the display device having the above configuration, it is preferable that a retardation plate is disposed between the first polarization selection unit and the transmission polarization axis changing unit. This retardation plate can be used as an optical compensator for reducing coloring or the like, or as a viewing angle compensator for improving viewing angle characteristics.
[0038]
(28) In the display device having the above configuration, it is preferable that a transparent member is disposed on the observation side of the first polarization selection unit, and the first polarization selection unit is directly or indirectly closely contacted with the transparent member. By closely contacting the first polarization selector with the transparent member, the surface of the first polarization selector on the observation side can be protected, and the first polarization selector can be reliably positioned and held.
[0039]
(29) In this case, it is preferable that the first polarization selecting means is bonded to the transparent member via a transparent material.
[0040]
The mode in which the first polarization selection means is fixed to the transparent member may be a case in which only the first polarization selection means is fixed to the transparent member, or the case in which the display means or the transmission polarization axis changing means is used together with the first polarization selection means. Fixation. In the latter case, it is preferable to fix to the transparent member via a transparent adhesive layer having elasticity. Thereby, the influence of external stress, for example, impact, on the display means and the transmission polarization axis changing means can be reduced, and the impact resistance of the display device can be improved.
[0041]
(30) Preferably, the surface of the transparent member on the side of the first polarization selecting means is flat. Thus, by flattening the surface on the back side of the transparent member, the surface on the observation side of the first polarization selecting unit which is in close contact with the surface can be configured to be flat. In particular, since the first polarization selection unit is often obtained as a flexible sheet material, the surface on the back side of the transparent member is configured to be flat, and the first polarization selection unit is brought into close contact with the surface. Since the first polarization selecting means can be kept flat by bonding or bonding, the quality of the mirror surface state in the mirror mode can be improved.
[0042]
(31) Further, it is desirable that the surface on the observation side of the transparent member is a curved surface. This allows the transparent member to be used as an optical lens, so that the display screen can be visually recognized in an appropriately enlarged or reduced state.
[0043]
(32) In the display device having the above-described configuration, it is preferable that the lighting unit is in a lighting state in the display mode, and the lighting unit is in a non-lighting state in the mirror mode.
[0044]
(33) In the display device having the above-described configuration, the transmission polarization axis changing unit has a normally black structure that blocks light when an OFF voltage is applied, and an OFF voltage is applied to the transmission polarization axis changing unit in the mirror mode. It is desirable to be done.
[0045]
(34) Next, an electronic apparatus according to the invention includes the display device having the above-described configuration. As described above, this display device is configured to be switchable between the display mode and the mirror mode only by arranging the polarization selection unit on the observation side of the display unit, so that deterioration of display quality can be avoided. At the same time, size and weight can be reduced. Therefore, it is preferable to be configured as a portable electronic device such as a mobile phone or a form information terminal.
[0046]
(35) An electronic apparatus according to another aspect of the invention includes the display device having the above-described configuration and a display driving unit that drives the transmission polarization axis changing unit. This display device can switch between the display mode and the mirror mode as described above without disposing another transmission polarization axis changing means on the observation side, so that the display quality in the display mode can be improved. In particular, since the display device can be made thinner and lighter, it is preferable that the display device be configured as a portable electronic device such as a mobile phone or a portable information terminal.
[0047]
(36) Further, the electronic apparatus according to the present invention includes a display device including the illumination unit, a display driving unit that drives the transmission polarization axis changing unit, and an illumination control unit that controls the illumination unit. It is characterized by. In particular, if the display driving unit and the illumination driving unit are configured to operate in conjunction with each other, it is possible to set the illumination unit to a non-lighting state and, at the same time, control the transmission polarization axis changing unit to set a light blocking state. . Therefore, light leakage can be reduced in the mirror mode, and the mirror surface state can be configured in a better mode.
[0048]
(37) Further, the electronic device according to the present invention includes a display unit capable of emitting light, and the display unit has a polarization axis that transmits the first polarized light and crosses the polarization axis of the first polarized light. A polarization selector for reflecting the second polarized light is provided on the observation side thereof, and the first polarization is emitted from the polarization selector to the observation side, and the first polarization can be observed on the observation side of the display unit. It is possible to switch between a transmissive display mode and a mirror mode using the polarization selection unit as a mirror on the observation side of the display unit without emitting the first polarized light from the polarization selection unit to the observation side. An auxiliary illumination means for emitting light to the observation side of the one polarization selecting means is provided.
[0049]
(38) Also in this electronic apparatus, it is desirable that the auxiliary illumination means is disposed on the observation side of the polarization selection means.
[0050]
(39) Next, another electronic apparatus according to the present invention includes a main body, a display body that includes a display unit and is foldable with respect to the main body, and a display device having the above-described configuration. The first polarization selection unit, the transmission polarization axis changing unit, and the second polarization selection unit that constitute the display device are provided in the display unit, and the auxiliary illumination unit that constitutes the display device is the main body unit It is characterized by being provided in.
[0051]
(40) Further, in the electronic device, the electronic device further includes an input unit which can operate an operation of the display device or an input unit which can input data to a display of the display device, and operates the input unit to operate the input unit. Preferably, the transmissive display mode can be switched between the mirror mode.
[0052]
Since the transmission display mode and the mirror mode can be switched by operating the input unit of the electronic device, either the transmission display mode or the mirror mode can be realized at any time as desired by the observer. Here, examples of the input unit include various operation buttons such as a data input key button, various operation switches such as a power switch, and operation members such as an operation dial.

(Tenth Embodiment of Display Device)
Next, an embodiment of a display device provided with a backlight which is preferable when applied to the embodiments shown in FIGS. 1 to 8 will be described. The configuration of this embodiment can adopt any of the configurations of the embodiments shown in FIGS. 1 to 8.
[0130]
FIG. 11 is a graph showing the emission angle distribution of the luminance of the backlight. In the present embodiment, in order to enhance the visibility of the display image, the display image has high luminance in a low emission angle range centered on the normal direction (emission angle = 0 °) of the display image, and has a high brightness away from the normal direction. A backlight having a low luminance in an emission angle range is desired. Here, the low emission angle range refers to, for example, a range in which the emission angle is 0 ° to 40 °, and the high emission angle range refers to, for example, a range in which the emission angle exceeds 40 °. In the example of FIG. 11, when the light with an emission angle of 0 ° is viewed, about 2000 cd / m 2 Is obtained, but for light having an emission angle of 50 °, 20 to 30 cd / m 2. 2 Brightness has decreased.
[0131]
As in the present embodiment, in the emission angle distribution of the illumination light from the backlight, which is the illumination means, the light amount is large in the low emission angle range and the light amount is small in the high emission angle range. Since the amount of the transmitted light T entering the eyes of the observer can be increased at the time of, the decrease in the visibility of the display screen due to the reflected light R2 can be further suppressed.
[0132]
Here, in order to improve the visibility of the display screen in the display mode and to suppress the amount of light of the backlight to reduce the power consumption, the light emission characteristics of the backlight must be adjusted to a high emission angle exceeding 40 °. It is preferable that the luminance (light amount) is equal to or less than 1/5 of the luminance (light amount) in the normal direction in the angular range.
[0133]
The emission angle distribution of the illumination light of the backlight as described above is appropriately determined by the shape of the
