Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to an active matrix type liquid crystal display device in which a peripheral drive circuit portion is formed as a pair in addition to a display screen on which pixel electrodes and switching elements are integrally formed. More specifically, the present invention relates to a seal structure in which a driving substrate on which pixel electrodes and a driving circuit portion are formed and a counter substrate on which a counter electrode is formed are joined to each other.
FIG. 4 is a schematic plan view showing an example of a conventional active matrix type liquid crystal display device. As shown, the liquid crystal display device has a panel structure in which a
In the conventional structure shown in FIG. 4, a seal area for disposing the
On the other hand, in the conventional example shown in FIG. 5, a seal area for separately disposing the
In view of the above-described problems of the related art, an object of the present invention is to provide an active matrix liquid crystal display device having a seal structure capable of reducing the chip size of a driving substrate. It is another object of the present invention to provide an active matrix type liquid crystal display device having a seal structure capable of improving the reliability of a peripheral drive circuit unit integrated on a drive substrate. The following measures were taken to achieve this purpose. That is, the liquid crystal display device according to the present invention has, as a basic configuration, one substrate having a central region in which pixel electrodes and switching elements are formed integrally, and a peripheral region in which a driving circuit unit for driving the switching elements is formed. And at least another substrate having a counter electrode. An adhesive member is interposed between the two substrates, and the two substrates are joined to each other via a predetermined gap. Liquid crystal is held in the gap. An interlayer insulating film made of an inorganic material for covering the drive circuit portion and a flattening film having a thickness of 1 to 2 μm for filling unevenness on the surface of the drive circuit portion are provided. As a characteristic feature of the present invention, the adhesive member is disposed in a strip shape along the peripheral region, and is arranged so as to overlap the drive circuit portion via the interlayer insulating film and the planarizing film.
Preferably, the flattening film is made of an organic material such as a resin and has a thickness of 1 to 2 µm. Preferably, the adhesive member contains fine pieces of glass fiber, and regulates the gap between the two substrates to a constant value. On the other hand, the drive circuit section is located on the upper side of the peripheral area and performs a column drive of the switching elements arranged in a matrix. The driving circuit section is located on the left side and the right side of the peripheral area and simultaneously operates the switching elements from both sides. And a pair of vertical drive circuits for performing the row drive. In this case, the adhesive member is disposed continuously and in a band shape over the vertical drive circuit on the left side, the horizontal drive circuit on the upper side, and the vertical drive circuit on the right side.
According to the present invention, the adhesive member that joins the pair of upper and lower substrates to each other is disposed in a strip shape along the peripheral region of the substrate, and is disposed so as to overlap the drive circuit unit formed in the peripheral region. I have. In other words, the drive circuit portion and the seal portion on the substrate are used as the same space, and the panel size of the liquid crystal display device is reduced. At this time, the surface of the drive circuit portion is covered with a flattening film to fill the irregularities, and then an adhesive member is formed. Therefore, the drive circuit can be effectively protected, and the gap between the two substrates can be controlled to be constant. Further, even when the adhesive member contains a fine piece of glass fiber and the gap between the two substrates is regulated to be constant, there is no fear that the fine piece of glass fiber damages the surface of the drive circuit section. In addition, a pair of vertical drive circuits are arranged on the left and right sides of the horizontal drive circuit on the upper side in the peripheral area, and the drive circuit section is generally arranged in a U-shape. This arrangement provides a stable base structure for the adhesive member, and the gap size of the substrate can be controlled to be constant. That is, the other substrate is held horizontally on the basis of the peripheral drive circuit portion arranged in a U-shape with respect to the one substrate.
According to the present invention, the adhesive member is provided on the peripheral drive circuit portion, and the drive circuit portion and the seal portion are used in the same space. As a result, the size of the driving substrate can be reduced as compared with the conventional example shown in FIGS. 4 and 5, and the size and cost of the panel can be reduced. Further, by interposing a flattening film between the adhesive member and the drive circuit section, the drive circuit section itself can be protected and the gap size between the pair of substrates joined to each other can be controlled to be constant. Further, since the liquid crystal is removed from directly above the drive circuit section, no DC voltage is applied and the reliability is improved.
Hereinafter, preferred embodiments of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the drawings. FIG. 1 is a schematic plan view showing a basic configuration of an active matrix liquid crystal display device according to the present invention. As shown in the drawing, the present liquid crystal display device has a panel structure in which a lower substrate (hereinafter, driving substrate) 1 and an upper substrate (hereinafter, opposing substrate) 2 are overlapped with each other. On the upper end side of the panel, the drive substrate 1 is extended beyond the counter substrate 2, and
(4) The
FIG. 2 is a plan view showing a specific configuration example of the drive board 1 shown in FIG. As shown in the figure, a
The
As shown in the figure, the driving
FIG. 3 is a schematic partial cross-sectional view showing a specific configuration example of the active matrix type liquid crystal display device shown in FIG. 1, in which a
(4) The
{Circle around (1)} On the other hand, a
As a feature of the present invention, the
