TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an improvement in a seal ring for closing an open end of a rolling bearing unit for supporting, for example, wheels of a vehicle (automobile) on a suspension device. Specifically, the sealing performance, that is, the performance of preventing foreign matter such as muddy water from entering the internal space where the rolling elements are installed and preventing the grease sealed in the internal space from leaking to the outside is improved. At the same time, the friction and the wear are reduced. It is another object of the present invention to improve the running performance of a vehicle, mainly fuel efficiency and acceleration performance, and to simplify maintenance and management of the rolling bearing unit.
[0002]
[Prior art]
Rolling bearings such as ball bearings, cylindrical roller bearings, and tapered roller bearings are incorporated in the rotation support portions of various types of mechanical devices. Sealing rings are incorporated in such rolling bearings to prevent grease sealed in the internal space of the rolling bearings from leaking out, and to prevent various foreign substances such as rainwater, mud, and dust existing outside from rolling bearings. To prevent them from getting inside. FIG. 20 shows a structure for rotatably supporting a drive wheel of a vehicle on a suspension device as an example of a rolling bearing unit with a seal ring having such a seal ring.

By the way, in general, muddy salt water adheres to the sliding portion between the leading edge of the seal lip and the mating surface because of rolling with a seal ring mounted on some vehicles used in snowfall areas or coastal areas. This is the case of the bearing unit. Therefore, it is conceivable to mount a seal ring having a large sliding resistance instead of having excellent sealing properties only on the rolling bearing units of some of the vehicles. In this case, the rolling bearing unit of the remaining vehicle is provided with a seal ring having a small sliding resistance instead of a slightly inferior sealing property, so that the performance of the vehicle, mainly the acceleration performance and the fuel consumption performance, can be improved. However, such a situation is not realistic because not only does the manufacturing operation of the vehicle become extremely troublesome, but also the use state cannot be grasped at the stage of manufacturing the vehicle.
In view of such circumstances, the present invention provides a seal ring that can obtain a good seal performance even under severe conditions such as exposure to muddy salt water while suppressing an increase in friction torque in an initial state. The present invention has been made to realize a rolling bearing unit with a seal ring incorporating the seal ring.
[0017]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
Of the seal ring and the rolling bearing unit with the seal ring of the present invention, the seal ring described in
In particular, in the seal ring of the present invention, the seal lip has a sub-seal portion in addition to the main seal portion provided on the leading edge thereof and slidably in contact with the mating surface over the entire circumference. It is. The sub-seal portion is provided closer to the base end of the seal lip than the main seal portion, and at least in an unused state, closely opposes the mating surface without sliding.
[0018]
Further, the rolling bearing unit with a seal ring according to the fifth aspect has an outer ring having an outer raceway on an inner peripheral surface and an inner ring on an outer peripheral surface, similarly to the above-described conventionally known rolling bearing unit with a seal ring. An inner ring having a raceway, a plurality of rolling elements rotatably provided between the outer raceway and the inner raceway, and a space existing between an inner peripheral surface of the outer race and an outer peripheral surface of the inner race. A seal ring for closing the end opening.
In particular, in the rolling bearing unit with a seal ring according to the fifth aspect, the seal ring is the above-described seal ring.
In the rolling bearing unit with a seal ring, a raceway ring that rotates during use with one of the outer race and the inner race is a hub that couples and fixes the wheels during use. A so-called hub unit, which is a stationary wheel supported by a suspension device, includes a so-called hub unit which does not rotate when used in the other race.
[0019]
[Action]
Since the seal ring of the present invention configured as described above operates as follows, it is possible to secure good sealing performance and improve durability while suppressing an increase in frictional resistance. Hereinafter, the reason will be described.
In the case of the seal ring of the present invention, in the state immediately after the start of use, only the main seal portion of the main seal portion and the sub seal portion provided on the seal lip is in sliding contact with the mating metal surface. In this state, since the sliding portion relating to the seal lip is only one portion of the main seal portion, the frictional resistance is suppressed low, and the rotational torque of the rolling bearing unit with the seal ring incorporating the seal ring increases. Can be suppressed. In addition, as described below, when the sliding contact portion related to the main seal portion is worn, the auxiliary seal portion contributes to ensuring the sealing performance. It is not necessary to set a large value in consideration of the above. For this reason, the surface pressure of the sliding contact portion between the main seal portion and the mating surface can be reduced, and the frictional resistance can be further reduced. Further, the sealing performance of the seal lip provided with the sub-seal portion can be secured based on the presence of the sub-seal portion. For this reason, it is possible to reduce the number of seal lips other than the seal lip provided with the sub-seal part, and to reduce the interference thereof. Resistance can be reduced
.
[0020]
The mating surface and the sub-seal portion, in the state where the main seal portion is exposed to a muddy salt environment, the mating surface and the main seal portion are worn, and the interference of the main seal portion is reduced, Sliding contact for the first time. That is, when the sliding contact portion between the main seal portion and the mating surface is exposed to a muddy salt environment, the main seal portion and the mating surface wear due to the abrasive wear as described above, and The sealing lip is displaced in a direction in which the leading end thereof approaches the mating surface while the interference of the seal lip is reduced.
Then, in a state where the wear of the main seal portion and the mating surface has progressed to a certain extent, not only the main seal portion but also the sub seal portion starts to slide on the mating surface. In the state where the sub-seal portion and the mating surface have started to slide, the sub-seal portion and the mating surface are not worn. That is, in this state, the sub-seal portion has the shape (properties) immediately after the formation of the seal lip, and the mating surface remains the smooth surface immediately after processing. Therefore, the state of sliding contact between the sub seal portion and the mating surface, which has newly started sliding contact, is good, and the sealing performance of the portion is improved, and further intrusion of muddy salt water is prevented.

In each of the above-described examples, the number of sub-seal portions provided on each seal lip is at most one or two. However, the number of sub-seal portions provided on one seal lip may be three or more. If the number of the sub-sealing portions is increased, the sealing performance of the sealing lip can be further improved. In short, the number of the sub-sealing portions is determined in consideration of the space inside the seal ring and the required sealing performance. In addition, the number of sub-seal portions provided for each of the seal lips may be determined in consideration of the space inside the seal ring and the required sealing performance, and is not limited to the illustrated embodiment. 【The invention's effect】
The seal ring and the rolling bearing unit with the seal ring of the present invention are configured and operated as described above, and can prevent the deterioration of the seal performance due to the wear generated at the sliding contact portion between the tip of the seal lip and the mating surface. . For this reason, the initial tightening margin of the seal lip does not need to be excessive, and, for example, when applied to a rolling bearing unit with a seal ring for supporting a wheel of a vehicle, the fuel consumption and acceleration performance of the vehicle are mainly adjusted. The running performance can be improved, and the durability of the rolling bearing unit with the seal ring can be improved.
