本発明は、面発光装置及び液晶表示装置に関するものであり、特に面発光装置に太陽電池を備えることによって面発光装置または液晶表示装置の消費電力を低減させる技術に関するものである。

【従来の技術】
従来から、フロントライトパネルまたはバックライトパネルなどの面発光装置に液晶表示パネルを重ね合わせ、面発光装置から発した光を液晶表示パネルに照射して液晶表示パネルの輝度を高めるように構成した液晶表示装置が使用されている。

上記の液晶表示装置を構成する液晶表示パネルや面発光装置の消費電力については、従来と比べて各々の消費電力がかなり低減されているが、液晶表示装置全体としては依然として消費電力量が大きい。消費電力量の大きさは、特に、液晶表示装置が携帯型情報機器等に用いられる場合に問題となることが多い。即ち、液晶表示装置を含めた携帯型情報機器の使用時間は、液晶表示装置の消費電力量と内蔵バッテリの容量とのバランスに大きく左右されるが、最近の液晶表示装置の高輝度化の要求の高まりにより、消費電力が増大する一方で使用時間が短くなる問題がある。
従って、表示の高輝度化と同時に長い使用時間を達成するには、液晶表示装置の更なる省電力化が要求される。省電力化を図る解決手段としては、従来から、下記特許文献1、2に記載された技術が知られている。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】
しかし、携帯型情報機器は常に小型化や薄型化が要求されるので、表示装置自体についてもさらなる薄型化が望まれている。

ところで、上記の面発光装置は、一般的に、光源と該光源の光を内部に導入して出射面から出射する導光板とから構成されるが、従来の面発光装置では、光源から発した光のうちの10〜30%が出射面以外の部分から漏れて利用されないという欠点がある。この漏れ光を再利用できれば、面発光装置の消費電力をさらに低減できる可能性がある。

本発明は、上記事情に鑑みてなされたものであって、面発光装置から漏れる漏れ光を再利用することにより、消費電力量を相対的に低減することが可能となり、しかも形状が薄型である面発光装置及びこの面発光装置を備えた液晶表示装置を提供することを目的とする。

【課題を解決するための手段】
上記の目的を達成するために、本発明は以下の構成を採用した。
本発明の面発光装置は、光源と、該光源の光を一側端面から導入し、内部を伝搬する前記光をその出射面から出射させる導光板と、前記導光板に隣接して前記導光板から漏れた漏れ光を電気に変換する太陽電池とからなることを特徴とする。

【発明の実施の形態】
以下、本発明の実施の形態を図面を参照して説明するが、本発明は以下の実施形態に限定されるものではない。また、本明細書において参照される各図面は、面発光装置や液晶表示装置の構成を説明するためのものであり、各部の大きさや厚さや寸法などは実際の面発光装置や液晶表示装置とは異ならしめてある。

図1は、本発明の実施形態の面発光装置の一例を示す側面図である。図1に示す面発光装置1は、透明な導光板12と、この導光板12の一側端面12aに配置された発光素子11を備える棒状の光源13と、導光板12の下面に対向して配置された太陽電池パネル14(太陽電池)とから概略構成されている。
また図2には、図1の導光板12に光源13を取り付けた状態を斜視図で示す。

図1及び図2に示すように、導光板12は、光源13からの光を内部に導入して出射面全体から均一な光として出射させるものであり、透明なアクリル樹脂などから構成されている。図1に示すように導光板12の図中上面は、光源13からの光が出射される出射面12bとされており、この出射面12bと反対側(導光板12の図中下面側)は、導光板12の内部を伝搬する光の伝搬方向を変えるための反射面12cとされている。
導光板12を構成する材料としては、上記アクリル系樹脂のほかポリカーボネート系樹脂、エポキシ樹脂などの透明な樹脂材料や、ガラスなどを用いることができる。

導光板12の出射面12bは、光源13からの光を面全体から均一に出射させるために、表面粗さ10nm以下の平滑な面とされている。この出射面12b上には、導光板12の内部または外部からこの出射面12bを通過する光の反射を防ぐための反射防止膜が設けられていてもよい。

反射面12cには、導光板12の内部を伝搬する光の一部を反射させてその伝搬方向を変えるために出射面12bに対して傾斜して形成された第1の斜面部16と、この第1の斜面部16より緩やかな傾斜角度を有して形成された第2の斜面部17が交互に連続して複数形成されている。この反射面12cにも上記出射面12bと同様に反射防止膜を設けてもよい。
第1の斜面部16の出射面12bに対する傾斜角度は、40〜50度程度とすることが好ましく、第2の斜面部17は、出射面12bに対する傾斜角度を5度以下として出射面12bと概ね平行とすることが好ましい。これは、第1の斜面部16が、導光板12の内部を伝搬する光の伝搬方向を出射面12bに向かう側に変える作用を供するのに対して、第2の斜面部17が導光板12の内部を伝搬する光を反射させて光源13から遠ざかる方向に送る作用を供するものであるからである。
また、上記第1の傾斜部16は、出射面12bにおける輝度の分布を均一にするために100μm〜300μm程度の間隔で形成されていることが好ましく、その導光板12の厚さ方向の幅は、出射光量を大きくするために3μm〜10μmとすることが好ましい。

尚、図1及び図2に示す導光板12では、反射面12cの形状を、2つの斜面部16、17が交互に連続した三角波状としているが、反射面12cの形状はこれに限られるものではなく、この他にも、特に限定されるものではないが、斜面部16、17によって形成されるくさび状の溝の間に出射面12bとほぼ平行な平坦部を設けた台形状が連続した形状としたものや、反射面12cに球面の一部を成す凹部を複数形成した形状、あるいは球体の一部を成す凸部を反射面12c上に複数形成した形状などを挙げることができる。

次に、図1及び図2に示すように、光源13は、導光板12の一側端面12aに光を照射する棒状の光源であり、具体的には棒状導光体13aの一端面または両端面に白色LED(Light Emitting Diode)などの発光素子11を備えたものが好適に用いられる。棒状導光体13aは発光素子11、11から出射された光を導光板12に照射させるために光の照射方向を制御するためのもので、内部に光を屈折するための図示略のプリズム面が形成されている。この棒状導光体13aは、アクリル系樹脂、ポリカーボネート系樹脂、エポキシ系樹脂などの透明な樹脂材料から構成され、場合によってはガラス製であってもよい。
尚、光源13は導光板12の一側端面12aに光を導入しうるものであれば問題なく用いることができ、例えば導光板12の一側端面12aに沿って発光素子を並べたり、棒状の冷陰極管を用いたり、白色LEDの代わりに有機EL素子を用いたりするなど、導光板12の一側端面12aに均一に光を照射することができるものであれば、いずれのものも好適に用いることができる。

次に図1に示すように太陽電池14は、導光板12に隣接して導光板12から漏れた漏れ光を電気に変換するパネル状のもので、出射面12bと反対側の反射面12cの全面に対向して配置されている。太陽電池14は、例えば、単結晶Si太陽電池、アモルファスSi太陽電池、化合物薄膜太陽電池などを用いることができる。
図1の破線矢印で示すように、導光板12の内部に導入された光は、その大部分が反射面12cにより反射されて出射面12bから出射されるが、一部の光は反射面12cから導光板12の外部に漏れる。この漏れた光が太陽電池14によって電気に変換される。

上記の面発光装置1によれば、反射面12cから漏れた漏れ光を太陽電池14が受けて電気に変換するように構成されているので、漏れ光を電気に変換して再利用することができ、面発光装置1の消費電力を相対的に低減することができる。
また、パネル状の太陽電池14を備えているので、面発光装置1を薄型にすることができる。

次に、図3及び図4には、面発光装置の他の例を示す。図3及び図4に示す面発光装置21は、透明な導光板12と、この導光板12の一側端面12aに配置された発光素子11を備える棒状の光源13と、導光板12の他側端面12dに対向して配置された棒状の太陽電池25とから概略構成されている。
尚、図3及び図4に示す導光板12及び光源13は、図1及び図2で説明した導光板及び光源と同一構成のものなので、以後の説明では、導光板及び光源に関して図1及び図2の説明と重複する説明を省略する。

図3及び図4に示す光源13は、棒状導光体13aの一端面または両端面に白色LEDなどの発光素子11を備えたものが好適に用いられる。
棒状導光体13aについてさらに詳細に説明すると、この棒状導光体13aの側面のうち、導光板12と反対側の面には、図1及び図2にて図示を省略したプリズム形状のプリズム面13bがあり、発光素子11、11から棒状導光体13aに導入された光をこの面で反射させることで、導光板12側へ光の伝搬方向を変え、導光板12の一側端面12a側に発光素子11、11から出射された光を照射するようになっている。

太陽電池25は、導光板12に隣接して導光板12から漏れた漏れ光を電気に変換するする棒状のもので、他側端面12dに対向して配置されている。太陽電池25は、図1及び図2に示した太陽電池14と同様に、単結晶Si太陽電池、アモルファスSi太陽電池、化合物薄膜太陽電池などを適用することができる。

棒状導光体13aによって伝搬方向を変えられた光の大部分は、導光板12の一側端面12aに対してほぼ垂直な角度で導光板12内に入射し、反射面12cで反射されて出射面12bから出射される。
ところで、一側端面12aに対してほぼ垂直な角度で入射された光の一部は、面発光装置1の場合と同様に反射面12cから外部に漏れるが、この他に一側端面12aと反対側にある他側端面12dから漏れる光もある。この漏れ光も以外に割合が多く、15〜20%に達することがある。
即ち、図3及び図4の矢印で示すように、導光板12の内部に導入された光の一部が、反射面12cに一度も当たることなく直接に他側端面12dまで到達し、そこから外部に出射されて漏れ光となる。この漏れ光は太陽電池25によって電気に変換される。

以上のように、上記の面発光装置21によれば、他側端面12dから漏れた漏れ光を太陽電池25で電気に変換するので、漏れ光を再利用することができ、面発光装置21の消費電力を相対的に低減することができる。

次に、図5には、面発光装置のその他の例を示す。図5に示す面発光装置41は、導光板12と、この導光板12の一側端面12aに配置された発光素子11を備える棒状の光源13と、導光板12の別の側端面12eに対向して配置された棒状の太陽電池45とから概略構成されている。
尚、図5に示す導光板12及び光源13は、図1〜図4で説明した導光板及び光源と同一構成のものなので、以後の説明では、導光板及び光源に関して図1〜4の説明と重複する説明を省略する。

尚、上記の面発光装置41では、図5の破線で示すように、側端面12eと反対側の別の側端面12f側に太陽電池46を設けても良く、更に図3の場合と同様に他側端面12dに太陽電池47を設けてもよい。更に、図1の場合と同様にパネル状の太陽電池を反射面12cに対向配置させても良い。

次に、上記の面発光装置を液晶表示装置に適用した例について説明する。
図6には、面発光装置をバックライトパネルとして適用した液晶表示装置の一例を示す。この液晶表示装置31は、バックライトパネルとしての面発光装置30と、液晶表示パネル50とから構成されている。

液晶表示パネル50は、いわゆる透過型の液晶表示パネルといわれるのもので、液晶層53を挟持して対向するガラスなどからなる第1の基板51と、第2の基板52をシール材54で接合一体化して構成されている。第2の基板52の液晶層53と反対側の面が表示面50aとされている。
第1の基板51の液晶層53側の面には表示回路56が形成されており、第2の基板52の液晶層53側の面には表示回路57が形成されている。このように液晶表示パネル50は、外部から入射した光を透過する透過型の液晶表示パネルとされている。
表示回路56および57は、図示されていないが液晶層53を駆動するための透明導電膜等からなる電極層や液晶層53の配向を制御するための配向膜等を含むものである。また、場合によってはカラー表示を行うためのカラーフィルタなどを有する構成であってもよい。

面発光装置30は、透明な導光板32と、この導光板32の一側端面32aに配置された棒状の光源33と、導光板32の下面及び他側端面に対向して配置された太陽電池34、35とから概略構成されている。

第1の基板71の液晶層73側の面には半透過反射板75と表示回路76とが順に積層されており、第2の基板72の液晶層73側の面には表示回路77が形成されている。

半透過反射板75は、透明の基板上に薄膜の反射膜を積層して半透過性としたものや、透明の基板上に多数の開口部を有する反射膜を積層して半透過性としたものを例示できる。この半透過反射板75は、15〜30%程度の光透過率を示すもので、周囲光を利用して反射型のモードで表示をする場合、70〜85%の反射光が表示面70a側に反射されて表示が行われる。しかし、面発光装置60が点灯されると、面発光装置60から受けた光のうち、15〜30%程度の光を表示面70a側に透過させ、残りの70〜85%の光を面発光装置60側に反射させる。

次に図8には、面発光装置をフロントライトパネルとして適用した液晶表示装置の一例を示す。この液晶表示装置81は、フロントライトパネルとしての面発光装置80と、液晶表示パネル70とから構成されている。
