Description
【0001】

TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a calibration method and a printing apparatus, and more particularly, to execution of calibration in a printing apparatus having a power saving mode.
[0002]
[Prior art]
Many printing apparatuses such as printers and copiers have a power saving mode (or sleep mode) for suppressing power consumption during a period when the user does not use the apparatus. This power saving function stops or partially reduces the power supply required for these units by stopping or suppressing the heating of the fixing unit, the rotation of the fan, or the operation of the CPU and various sensors. It is.
[0003]
However, if such a power saving state continues for a certain period of time, changes in environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, etc.), a decrease in the temperature of the fixing device of the printer engine, a change in the charging state of the charging device, and the like accompanying the power saving mode. , The print characteristics of the printer engine may change. When printing is performed in a state where the characteristics are changed, a result different from a desired result is obtained, for example, a gradation property and a color in a printed image are not reproduced from those of the original image. For this reason, before finishing the power saving mode and performing printing, color adjustment processing (calibration) is often performed. More specifically, the calibration is generally performed after shifting from the power saving mode to the printing standby state.
[0004]
A conventional example of executing calibration in the power saving mode will be described with reference to FIGS. 10, 11, and 12. FIG.
[0005]
FIG. 10 is a diagram showing a procedure of processing from reception of print data in a sleep mode to completion of printing in a conventional example, and FIG. 11 shows processing performed between a video controller and a printer engine in the processing shown in FIG. FIG. 12 is a diagram showing details of the calibration process performed, and FIG. 12 is a diagram showing details of a print control process similarly performed between the video controller and the printer engine in the process shown in FIG. In the description using these drawings, the power saving instruction and the power saving state are referred to as a sleep instruction and a sleep state, respectively, and the power saving releasing instruction is referred to as a sleep releasing instruction.
[0006]
As shown in FIG. 10, when the standby state continues for a predetermined time in the printer, the video controller turns off the panel display and instructs the printer engine to sleep, whereby the printer engine enters a sleep state (S1000).
[0007]
When data is received from the host in this sleep state (S1001), a sleep release instruction is issued to the printer engine (S1002), and the LCD controller, the LED display on the panel, and the video controller such as CPU full operation are released (S1002). S1003). On the other hand, the printer engine that has received the sleep cancel instruction performs a warming-up process for starting printing by controlling the fixing device, the charging device, the fan, and the like (S1004). During this time, the video controller analyzes the data sent from the host, performs image processing, and generates image data used for printing by the printer engine (S1005).
[0008]
When the warm-up is completed, the printer engine issues a calibration request to the video controller (S1006), whereby the calibration process is executed between the video controller and the printer engine in S1007. Then, when this calibration process is completed, the printer is brought into a printable state. That is, it takes time T from the reception of the data in step S1001 to the point where printing is possible. Next, in step S1008, print control processing is performed between the video controller and the printer engine based on the image data generated in step S1005 (S1008), and a printing operation is performed in this processing.
[0009]
Next, the details of the calibration processing in step S1007 will be described with reference to FIG. The video controller executes a density control execution instruction (S1101) and a density control data transfer (S1102) with a calibration request from the printer engine as a trigger, and the printer engine executes density control processing in response to the instruction to execute the density control processing for each color. A reference value for the maximum density is determined (S1103). The determination of the reference value relates to the adjustment of the maximum density that can be realized for each of C, M, Y, and K colors in the printer engine. Normally, a target maximum density at the time of design is determined in a printer engine, but the density fluctuates due to aging or the like. For this reason, in this step, a toner image of a patch is formed on the drum based on the maximum density gradation value data transferred from the video controller for each color, and these are measured by a sensor to obtain the C, M at that time. , Y, K are obtained. If the maximum density value has changed from the reference value, the developing bias value of the drum is controlled to make adjustment to obtain an appropriate maximum density. When this reference value is determined, a density control completion notification is sent to the video controller (S1104), and the density control processing is completed.
[0010]
In response to the completion of the density control, the video controller issues a density measurement execution instruction (S1105) and transfers density measurement data (S1106), and starts a density measurement process. In response to this, the printer engine forms a toner image of a patch for each of a predetermined number of gradation values for each color on the drum, as described above, based on the predetermined number of gradation value data transferred from the video controller, The densities of these patches are measured using a sensor (S1107). When the measurement is completed, a notification of the completion of the concentration measurement is given (S1108). Upon receiving the completion notification, the video controller obtains a measurement result measured by the printer engine (S1109), and based on the print density characteristic of each color as the measurement result, the characteristic is linear with respect to the gradation value data. A conversion relationship (for example, a γ table) for correcting the tone value data is calculated so that the relationship is obtained, and the result is stored in a predetermined memory so as to be used in image processing when actually printing, and the calibration process is completed. I do.
[0011]
Details of the print control processing in step S1008 are shown in FIG. As shown in the figure, first, the video controller performs various settings such as a paper size, a print mode (print speed, color, etc.), a paper feed port, a paper discharge port, and the like for the printer engine (S1201), and sets the page ID. A print reservation is made by designating the print job (S1202). This is because, if the printer engine performs high-speed printing, the control processing for each page cannot be performed in time, so that a reservation for a plurality of pages is necessary in advance. Upon receiving the reservation instruction, the printer engine performs control such as driving the scanner motor and raising the temperature of the fixing device, and transitions to a printable state (S1203). When the printer engine is ready, the printer engine starts paper transport and feeds the paper to the registration adjustment position, which is the reference position for transporting the print paper (S1204). Note that the paper feed timing varies depending on the printing method of the engine and the specifications of the paper feed port. For example, paper feed may be performed after printing is started.
[0012]
The video controller issues a print start instruction (S1205), performs data transfer in synchronization with various signals (S1206), and executes printing (S1207). When printing is completed and the paper reaches the discharge port, the printer engine notifies the completion of discharge and ends the processing of the page (S1208). Note that the sheet discharge completion control may be performed by checking the sheet discharge by a sheet discharge sensor or by predicting the sheet discharge completion timing by a timer based on the sheet size and the transport speed.
[0013]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
As described above, in the return from the conventional power saving mode, the warm-up process and the calibration process are performed after the print command is issued and before the printing is started (see FIG. 10). Equivalent processing will be performed. For this reason, it takes more time (Т in FIG. 10) to return from the power saving mode to start printing than to start printing from the standby state, and the time related to printing as a whole becomes longer. In addition, the user may feel that this time is particularly long in the waiting time in the printer.
[0014]
In addition, the return from the power saving mode to the printable state is generally performed using a user's panel operation or data reception as a trigger. In the case of a printer, the printer often returns from the power saving mode by a trigger due to print data reception. In this case, before completing the calibration, image data used for printing is generated (see FIG. 10). For this reason, the generated image data is data generated by image processing using an old conversion table that may not correspond to the print characteristics at that time immediately before the calibration is performed, and as a result, In addition, there is a possibility that a desired gradation and color cannot be obtained in a printed image.
[0015]
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention has been made to solve the above-described conventional problems, and an object of the present invention is to provide a printing apparatus that starts printing by the time required to execute calibration when returning from a power saving mode. It is an object of the present invention to provide a calibration method and a printing apparatus that can prevent the time until the printing time from becoming long.
[0016]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
Therefore, according to the present invention, there is provided a calibration method for setting printing characteristics of a printing apparatus that performs printing based on input print data, wherein the calibration is performed while waiting for input of print data. Is performed, and when it is determined that the calibration is to be performed, the calibration is performed before the print data is input.
[0017]
A printing apparatus that performs printing based on input print data and performs a calibration to obtain predetermined print characteristics. A determination unit for determining whether or not to execute the calibration, and an execution unit for performing the calibration before the print data is input when the determination unit determines to execute the calibration. Features.
[0018]
According to the above configuration, in the printing apparatus, while waiting for the input of the print data, it is determined whether or not to execute the calibration. Since the calibration is performed before the print data is input, for example, when the print data is transferred from the host device when the print device is in the power saving mode, the print data is input, and the print operation is to be started, the calibration is already performed. Is running. Thus, when print data is input and printing is to be started after returning from the power saving mode, it is not necessary to execute calibration before printing is started, and the actual printing can be started earlier.

The processing shown in the figure is substantially the same as the processing described with reference to FIG. 10, and the same steps are denoted by the same reference numerals and description thereof will be omitted.
[0053]
The difference is that the process of the present embodiment executes a process of storing the calibration execution time used in the process of checking the execution timing of the calibration in step S501 shown in FIG. That is, in the last step S601 of the processing procedure, the execution time of the calibration executed in the previous steps S1101 to S1109 is stored in the nonvolatile memory. This time is used as information for determining the next calibration execution timing. Note that the print control processing in step S1008 in FIG. 5 is exactly the same as the processing described in FIG. 12, and a description thereof will be omitted here.
[0054]
FIG. 7 is a flowchart showing the details of the processing in step S501 in FIG. 5, that is, the processing in which the
[0055]
When this process is started, in step S701, the timer is checked to know the current time, and the elapsed time from the current time and the previous calibration execution time stored in step S601 is obtained. Then, in step S702, the obtained elapsed time is compared with a predetermined threshold to determine whether or not the elapsed time exceeds the threshold. Here, when the elapsed time does not exceed the predetermined threshold, the present process is terminated, and when it is determined that the elapsed time has exceeded the predetermined threshold, a sleep cancel instruction is issued (S703, S1002 in FIG. 5). Thus, the process described in FIG. 5 is started. Note that the above-mentioned predetermined threshold value is determined based on how much elapsed time that the influence of a change in the characteristics of each element of the printing unit such as the photosensitive drum and toner on the printer engine on the printing result is recognized as deterioration of print quality. Can be determined by the following conditions.
[0056]
As described above, according to the present embodiment, when in the sleep state, the calibration can be executed before receiving the data relating to the printing from the host and instructing the printing, and therefore, after the printing instruction is given. Calibration does not have to be performed before printing is started, and thus, in FIG. 5, the time T from data reception in step S1001 until printing becomes possible is the same as the conventional time T (see FIG. 10). ) Can be shortened. In addition, since the calibration is performed relatively shortly before the printing is instructed, the contents of the resulting γ correction table almost reflect the printing characteristics of the printer engine at the time of executing the printing. It will be. That is, image processing for generating image data is performed using the gamma correction table.
[0057]
Note that, in the above-described conventional example, the calibration is performed after the sleep is released, regardless of the elapsed time from the previous calibration. It is determined whether or not the threshold value is exceeded, and when the threshold value is exceeded, the calibration may be executed. It takes time. Even if it is determined that calibration is not to be performed, the elapsed time is counted as much as the sleep time in the determination of the elapsed time, so the calibration is performed during printing, including before the start of printing. And the overall printing time is increased.
[0058]
(2nd Embodiment)
In the above-described first embodiment, the
[0059]
FIG. 8 is a diagram illustrating a procedure of a process from reception of data in the power saving mode according to the second embodiment to completion of printing, and illustrates a process similar to the process illustrated in FIG. 5 of the first embodiment.
[0060]
The difference is that the
[0061]
The steps after these steps are the same as those in the processing shown in FIG. This process is also a process that is started at predetermined time intervals, similarly to the process shown in FIG.
[0062]
FIG. 9 is a flowchart illustrating a method in which the
[0063]
When the present process is started, in step S901, similarly to step S701 in FIG. 7, the timer is checked to know the current time, and the elapsed time from the current time and the previous calibration execution time stored in step S601. Ask for time. Then, in step S902, the obtained elapsed time is compared with a predetermined threshold to determine whether or not the elapsed time exceeds the threshold.
[0064]
Here, when it is determined that the elapsed time has exceeded the predetermined threshold value, a calibration execution request is notified to the video controller 103 (S905). On the other hand, if it is determined in step S902 that the elapsed time does not exceed the predetermined threshold, the process proceeds to step S903, where environmental sensors that detect temperature, humidity, and a charging state are checked. If any one of the sensors detects a change exceeding a predetermined threshold value indicating a change in the print characteristics of the printer engine, a calibration request is notified to the
[0065]
As described above, the printer engine determines whether or not to execute the calibration, so that not only the determination based on the elapsed time but also a more accurate determination of the execution of the calibration by various environment sensors can be performed.
[0066]
(Third embodiment)
In the first and second embodiments, the change in the print characteristics of the printer engine in the power saving state is determined based on whether or not the elapsed time from the previous calibration execution time exceeds a predetermined threshold. This threshold value may be changed according to information such as a place such as a country or a region where the printer is used, a season, a climate, and an installation environment. As a result, it is possible to more accurately determine the execution of calibration according to the installation environment of the printer.
[0067]
(Fourth embodiment)
In the first and second embodiments, the panel display and the status notification to the host computer are kept in the sleep state, and only the internally necessary parts are returned from the sleep state to execute the calibration. Similar to the calibration, a panel may be displayed, and the host computer may be notified of the calibration state.
[0068]
As described above, by notifying the status accurately, the user or the host application can accurately determine the calibration execution timing, and it is easy to determine that the calibration process and the print instruction are bad and printing is delayed.
[0069]
(Fifth embodiment)
In the above-described first to fourth embodiments, the execution of the calibration when returning from the sleep state has been described. However, for a printing apparatus which does not have the sleep function or operates with the setting not to shift to the sleep state, processing such as warm-up is performed. When printing is completed and print data is transferred, the printing operation can be started immediately. In the standby state, the same operation may be performed for calibration.
[0070]
That is, in the embodiment in which the calibration execution is determined based on the elapsed time, when the elapsed time reaches a predetermined threshold value in the standby state, in the related art, similarly to the sleep mode, immediately after the print instruction is issued and immediately before printing. Calibration is executed, and as a result, a problem that printing start is delayed occurs. However, this can be solved. In addition, the problem that the calibration is not reflected in subsequent printing can be similarly solved.
[0071]
(Sixth embodiment)
In the above-described first to fifth embodiments, all the calibration processing has been described as processing in the printing apparatus. However, the printing apparatus can send a calibration request to the host computer by enabling bidirectional communication between the printing apparatus and the host computer. The calibration execution instruction may be issued from the host computer by notifying a server such as a computer.
[0072]
In a printing device such as a printer, a trigger of a print instruction is usually an application operation on a host computer. From this point, instead of the determination based on the elapsed time or the like, the user may know the print instruction based on the operation of the application on the host computer and execute the calibration in accordance with the instruction. For example, the host computer detects operations such as activation of a print setting screen, setting of the number of copies, and setting of a paper discharge destination in the application, and the host computer transmits a calibration execution instruction before printing is started, using this as a trigger. According to this embodiment, calibration upon returning from the sleep state can be executed before returning from the sleep state. As described above, the calibration control can be performed not only by the closed control in the printing apparatus but also by the application on the host computer.
[0073]
(Other embodiments)
As described above, the present invention can be applied to a system including a plurality of devices (for example, a host computer, an interface device, a reader, a printer, etc.) or to an apparatus including one device (for example, a copying machine or a facsimile machine). May be.
[0074]
FIGS. 5 to 9 for realizing the functions of the above-described embodiment in a device or a computer in a system connected to the various devices so as to operate the various devices so as to realize the functions of the above-described embodiments. The present invention also includes a computer program (CPU or MPU) of a system or an apparatus that supplies the program code of software described in, for example, and operates the various devices according to a stored program.
[0075]
In this case, the program code itself of the software realizes the function of the above-described embodiment, and the program code itself and a unit for supplying the program code to the computer, for example, a storage storing the program code The medium constitutes the present invention.
[0076]
As a storage medium for storing such a program code, for example, a floppy (registered trademark) disk, hard disk, optical disk, magneto-optical disk, CD-ROM, magnetic tape, nonvolatile memory card, ROM, or the like can be used.
[0077]
When the computer executes the supplied program code, not only the functions of the above-described embodiments are realized, but also the OS (Operating System) in which the program code runs on the computer, or other application software. It goes without saying that such a program code is also included in the embodiment of the present invention when the functions of the above-described embodiment are realized in cooperation with the above.
[0078]
Further, the supplied program code is stored in a memory provided on a function expansion board of the computer or a function expansion unit connected to the computer, and then, based on an instruction of the program code, a CPU or the like provided on the function expansion board or the function expansion unit. It is needless to say that the present invention includes a case in which the functions of the above-described embodiments are implemented by performing part or all of the actual processing.
[0079]
【The invention's effect】
As described above, according to the present invention, in the printing apparatus, while waiting for the input of the print data, it is determined whether to execute the calibration, and when it is determined that the calibration is to be executed based on the determination. Since the calibration is performed before the print data is input, for example, when the print data is transferred from the host device when the printing device is in the power saving mode, the print data is input, and the printing operation is to be started. Thus, the calibration has already been executed. Thus, when print data is input and printing is to be started after returning from the power saving mode, it is not necessary to execute calibration before printing is started, and the actual printing can be started earlier.
[0080]
As a result, it is possible to prevent the time required for executing the calibration when returning from the standby state such as the power saving mode to the printing operation from being lengthened by the time required for starting the printing.
