This toner image is transferred onto the transfer paper P by the transfer section 54 below the photosensitive drum 51. Then, the transfer paper P pressed onto the photoconductor drum 51 is separated by the separation unit 55. The transfer paper P separated from the photosensitive drum 51 enters the fixing device 58 via the belt conveying means 57, and the toner image is fixed by heat and pressure. The transfer paper P on which the image formation is completed in this way is discharged onto the paper discharge tray 70 by the discharge roller 65.

FIG. 5 is a side view showing the belt conveying means 57 and its periphery, and shows the structure between the photosensitive drum 51 and the fixing device 58 in the conventional image forming apparatus.
Further, FIG. 6 is a plan view in which a portion of the belt conveying means 57 is reduced. In an image forming apparatus such as a copying machine or a printer, the toner image on the photosensitive drum 51 is transferred onto the copy paper P by the transfer section 54 and separated by the separation section 55. The transfer paper P on which the toner image is transferred is sent to the fixing device 58, and the fixing roller 59 including the heating roller 591 and the pressure roller 592 heats and melts the toner to fix the toner. Then, the transfer section 54 to the fixing device 58 is usually conveyed by using the belt conveying means 57.

The transport belt 575 has a large number of through holes, and while driving the suction fan (not shown) connected to the transport duct 577 to suck the inside of the belt transport means 57, the drive roller 572 can be moved to the position shown in FIG. When driven to rotate in the direction of arrow,
The transfer belt 575 is rotationally driven, and the transfer sheet P separated from the photoconductor drum 51 by the action of the separation unit 55 is adsorbed by the transfer belt 575 and is transferred to the fixing device 58.

By the way, when the image forming apparatus is downsized, the belt conveying means 57 is also downsized,
Since the conveyor belt 575 is also shortened, the suction force is also reduced. On the other hand, for small size transfer paper such as postcards, the photosensitive drum 5
The length of the transfer sheet P in the transport direction is smaller than the distance from the nip portion N1 between the 1 and the separating portion 55 to the nip portion N2 of the fixing roller 59. Then, as shown in FIG. 5, the transfer paper P is not gripped by either of the nip portions N1 and N2 on both sides during the conveyance. In particular, when the transfer paper is thicker than a normal transfer paper like a postcard, the transfer paper P may be curled upward, and the transfer belt 575 has a weak suction force. Therefore, the transfer paper P is not absorbed by the transfer belt 575. It is transported as it is. Then, the leading end of the transfer sheet P reaches the entrance guide 581 of the fixing device 58, and the nip portion N of the fixing roller 59 is still formed.
Before the number reaches 2, the rear end of the transfer paper P becomes the photosensitive drum 5
1 and the nip portion N1 between the separating portion 55 are separated from each other. Then, no transfer force is applied to the transfer sheet P, the transfer sheet P is stopped before entering the fixing device 58, and the transfer sheet P is bridged in an arch shape, which causes a bridging jam.

BEST MODE FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION Embodiments of the present invention will be described in detail below with reference to the drawings. FIG. 1 is a diagram showing a structure around a belt conveying means in an image forming apparatus of the present invention. It corresponds to FIG. 5 showing the conventional example. FIG. 2 is a plan view of the belt conveying means and corresponds to FIG. The same components as those in the conventional example are designated by the same reference numerals, and different components will be mainly described.

The belt conveying means used in the present invention comprises the conventional belt conveying means 57 and the auxiliary conveying means 80. The auxiliary carrying means 80 is provided at the front end of the belt carrying means 57 in the carrying direction and in the center of the belt carrying means 57. By providing it at this position, even the smallest size transfer sheet can be brought into contact with the auxiliary transporting means 80.

The auxiliary conveying means 80 includes a driving roller 81 coaxial with the driving roller 572 and having the same diameter, a driven roller 83 protruding from the tip of the belt conveying means 57, and an endless auxiliary belt 82 wound between them. And a bracket 84 extending to both sides thereof and bent at 90 °, and an L-shaped link 85 having one end rotatably connected to the bracket 84.
And a piston 86 connected to the other end of the L-shaped link 85. The drive roller 81 is a drive roller 572.
Since it has the same diameter as the auxiliary belt 82, the auxiliary belt 82 rotates at a surface speed that matches the surface speed of the conveyor belt 575. Further, it is not necessary to separately provide a drive source for driving the auxiliary transporting means 80. The bracket 84 is rotatably supported by the drive shaft 571, and supports the driven roller 83 so as to revolve around the drive shaft 571.

However, when the transfer paper is of a normal size, it constantly interferes with the passing of the transfer paper if it is constantly projected upward as shown in FIG. Therefore, as shown in FIG. 3, the auxiliary conveying means 80 is retracted to the same height as the sheet surface a or downward.

That is, the auxiliary conveying means 80 can be moved to both the use state shown in FIG. 1 and the retracted state shown in FIG. In FIG. 1, the piston 86 descends to the right in the figure and pushes the tip of the bracket 84 downward, whereby the drive roller 81 rotates around the drive shaft 571 and rises, and the tip of the auxiliary belt 82 moves to the conveyor belt 575. Is projected above the sheet passing surface a. Further, in FIG. 3, the piston 86 moves to the left in the figure and pushes the tip of the bracket 84 upward, whereby the drive roller 81 rotates in the opposite direction about the drive shaft 571 and descends, and the auxiliary belt 82. The leading end of the sheet is set to be the same as or lower than the sheet passing surface a of the conveyor belt 575. A solenoid can be used as the piston 86.

At the use position shown in FIG. 1, a small size transfer paper P such as a postcard is fed, both ends of the transfer paper P are separated from both the nip portions N1 and N2, and the transfer paper P is transferred by curling. Even when the paper P is not adsorbed to the transport belt 575, the auxiliary belt 82 of the auxiliary transport unit 80 contacts the transfer paper P and the transport can be continued. Therefore, the leading edge of the small-sized transfer paper P is also the nip portion N2 of the fixing device 58.
It can be reliably fed until it reaches, and bridging jams can be prevented. Switching between the state of FIG. 1 and the state of FIG.
When the user selects a target small-sized transfer sheet (for example, a postcard) on the operation unit of the copying machine, the state is automatically switched to the state shown in FIG. Alternatively, the state shown in FIG. 1 may be automatically set by the user setting a postcard-sized transfer sheet and pressing the start key. Then, when the printing operation is completed, the state of FIG. 3 is automatically restored. Further, the state shown in FIG. 3 is set even when the power is turned off, a paper jam occurs, or the machine goes into an abnormal state.

As described above, according to the present invention,
An image forming apparatus provided with a belt conveying means provided between a sending side nip part of a transfer sheet and a receiving side nip part and having a sheet passing surface below a surface connecting the sending side nip part and the receiving side nip part. In the above, since the belt conveying means is provided with the auxiliary conveying means projecting above the sheet passing surface of the belt conveying means, even if the transfer paper has a length shorter than the distance between the sending side nip part and the receiving side nip part, The transfer paper can be sent to the nip portion on the receiving side, and bridging jam can be prevented.

If the auxiliary conveying means has an auxiliary belt and the auxiliary belt is driven by a driving roller having the same diameter as the driving roller of the conveying belt, the auxiliary belt is driven in the same manner as the conveying belt. It can be driven axially and at the same surface speed, eliminating the need for independent drive means.
