6B shows a cross-sectional structure of FIG. 6A, and FIG. 6C shows a structure in which a flexible wiring board is bent. The liquid crystal display panel 1 displays characters and images. A pair of transparent substrates 1a and 1b on which display electrodes are laid are opposed to each other at an appropriate interval, and a liquid crystal material is injected into the interval, and the transparent substrate It is configured by sealing the periphery with a sealing material. The lower transparent substrate (also referred to as an array substrate) 1a is formed to be wider than the upper transparent substrate 1b, and a plurality of liquid crystal display panels 1 are provided in a portion protruding to the outside when superposed on the transparent substrate 1b. The flexible circuit board FC is used for connecting the transparent circuit board 1a and the circuit board (printed wiring board) PC for controlling the operation of the drive circuit element IC. An electrode terminal (group of electrode terminals) is provided on the transparent substrate 1a, and a film-shaped or paste-shaped anisotropic conductive resin film (Anisotropi

Electrode terminals 8 are provided in a portion connected to the liquid crystal display panel 1 and a portion connected to the circuit board PC. A cover film 9 is attached and the wiring pattern 7 is protected except for the connection portion where the electrode terminal 8 is provided. Such a flexible wiring board FC is mounted by thermocompression bonding using the anisotropic conductive resin film 10,
It is often used by being bent on the back surface side of the liquid crystal display panel 1 (see FIG. 6C). Further, a plurality of flexible wiring boards FC are connected to one side of the transparent substrate 1a of the liquid crystal display panel 1 at a predetermined interval (lower side in FIG. 5).
However, one flexible wiring board FC may be provided with electrode terminals 8 at a plurality of locations and may be connected to a plurality of locations on one side of the transparent substrate 1a.

The wiring density in FC tends to increase.

Therefore, there are problems that the cover film 9 and the base film 6 are torn or the wiring pattern 7 is fatigued and cut by repeated bending. This tendency is particularly noticeable when bent with a small bending radius r in order to reduce the space for storing the circuit board PC and the like.
If the cover film 9 and the base film 6 are made thicker or harder to increase their strength, the boundary portions B1, B
As a result, the stress applied to the wiring pattern 2 increases, and the wiring pattern 7 is often damaged.

In the connection structure of C, while the screen size is increasing, the area occupied by the peripheral circuits is required to be further reduced (narrow frame). Therefore, the circuit board PC itself is multi-layered at the same time as the area is reduced, and the connection area with the flexible wiring board FC is becoming smaller. For this reason,
When the flexible wiring board FC is bent and used in a U-shaped or L-shaped cross section, the connection strength will decrease.
Since the bent flexible wiring board FC has a large force (repulsive force) to return to a flat shape, the connection portion is peeled off, and there is a mechanical structure for firmly fixing the circuit board PC to the back surface side of the transparent substrate 1a. It was necessary.
Further, the flexible wiring board FC is warped or stretched by the heat applied when the flexible wiring board FC is connected to the transparent substrate 1a or the circuit board PC by using the anisotropic conductive resin film 10, so that the flexible wiring board FC is bent. There was distortion in the shape of the connection part. As a result, the connection strength is reduced and the connection part is peeled off. Therefore, in the conventional liquid crystal display device, it is necessary to develop an adhesive having high connection strength, reinforce the connection part with resin, or separately hold down the support part with a support in the connection part of the reduced flexible wiring board FC. The intervals 9a and 9b of 1 are equidistant on the sides 9c and 9d, respectively. In the present embodiment, since the flexible wiring board FC and the cover film 9 are rectangular,

It is used by bending d into a U-shaped cross section (Fig. 2). At this time, since the groove 11 is formed on the surface of the cover film 9, the cover film 9 can be easily bent with the groove 11 having a smaller thickness than the periphery as a fulcrum. In addition, in the present embodiment, since five grooves 11 are formed, the stress due to bending is dispersed at five points. Moreover, since the intervals 9a and 9b of the groove 11 are formed at equal intervals on the sides 9c and 9d, respectively, the stress is evenly distributed in the region where the groove 11 is formed, that is, the region where the stress is applied. Accordingly, when such a flexible wiring board FC is bent into a U-shaped cross section or the like, the force required for the bending is small, and the stress due to the bending can be appropriately dispersed without being concentrated at one place. Further, since it is easily bent, the repulsive force that attempts to return to the original flat shape is suppressed, and sufficient connection strength is maintained at the connection portion thermocompression-bonded with the anisotropic conductive resin film 10. However, if the stress (bending stress) applied to the flexible wiring board FC is concentrated in a too narrow portion due to bending with a too small radius r, cracking of the base film 6 or bending of the wiring pattern 7 may occur. It is preferable to form a smooth curve such as a rounded shape.

It is formed shorter than (9c <9d). Distances 9e, 9f, 9g between the grooves 11 at the left and right ends and the boundaries B1, B2,
9h has a length different from the intervals 9a and 9b of the groove 11, but is formed so that the sides 9c and 9d have equal intervals (9a and 9b are constant). As a result, even when the side to which the transparent substrate 1a is connected and the side to which the circuit board PC is connected are not parallel (the connecting portion of the circuit board PC is irregular, etc.), twist is applied to the sides 9c and 9d to be bent. The flexible wiring board FC can be bent without bending. Further, as shown in FIG. 3B, the intervals 9a and 9b of the groove 11 are changed, or the widths 11a and 11b of the groove 11 are changed as shown in FIG. When the wiring board FC is mounted by twisting, it is possible to easily bend the wiring board FC. In any case, by forming a plurality of grooves 11 in a portion where a large amount of bending stress is applied and keeping the intervals 9a and 9b between the grooves 11 constant, the bending stress can be appropriately dispersed without being concentrated. .

なる。According to the flexible wiring board and the liquid crystal display device having the flexible wiring board of the present invention, a plurality of grooves are formed in the cover film so as to extend over two sides of the flexible wiring board that are bent, and Since the two sides that are bent have equal intervals, it is possible to suppress the force required for bending and the repulsive force that attempts to return to the original flat state. Therefore, by the grooves formed at equal intervals, the stress due to bending is dispersed without being biased, and damage to the flexible wiring board due to the concentration of stress can be suppressed. Also,
Even flexible wiring boards such as trapezoids that have different lengths on two sides that can be bent are mounted on differently shaped circuit boards by forming grooves at equal intervals on the two sides that are bent in accordance with the bending and twisting directions. Even when the flexible wiring board is twisted and bent after mounting, the stress due to the bending can be dispersed. Further, it is assumed that the heat applied when connecting the flexible wiring board to the array substrate or the circuit board as described above causes warping or stretching of the flexible wiring board, and thus the shape of the connection portion of the flexible wiring board is distorted. However, since the repulsive force for returning to the original flat shape is small, it is possible to maintain sufficient connection strength only with the adhesive force of the anisotropic conductive film. Therefore, unlike the conventional case, in order to supplement the connection strength, it is not necessary to develop an adhesive having a high connection strength, to reinforce the connection portion with resin, or to separately press the support structure. Also, because the flexible wiring board is stable when folded, the circuit board can be fixed to the back side of the array board with a simpler structure than the conventional one, facilitating manufacture as a liquid crystal display device. .
