Abstract

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To lower the emission rate of nitrogen oxide(NOx) in spite of a low- temperature state that the activity of catalysts is low. SOLUTION: First monoliths 12 and second monoliths 14 having cross-sectional surfaces of a honeycomb shape are interposed in series in an exhaust passage 10 of a diesel engine from its upstream side to its downstream side, and a fuel adding device 16 for adding fuel as hydrocarbon is interposed on the upstream side of the first monoliths. The first monoliths 12 are coated with rhodium-deposited zirconia catalysts which induce a steam reforming reaction (CmHn+mH2O→mCO+(m+n/2)H2) and on the other hand, the second monoliths are coated with platinum-deposited zeolite catalysts or silver-deposited alumina catalysts which clean exhaust gases by reacting hydrogen and hydrocarbon with the NOx in the exhaust gases by the following formulae. NOx+ H2→N2+H2O, NOx+CmHn→N2+CO2+H2O.

2. Description of the Related Art Conventionally, there has been known an exhaust gas purifying apparatus for reducing and purifying NOx in exhaust gas by a monolith type catalyst provided in an exhaust passage for purifying exhaust gas of a diesel engine. In this case, as a reducing agent for reducing NOx, hydrocarbon (hereinafter referred to as “H
C ”) is used, but the amount of N
Since it is smaller than Ox, a technique for adding HC such as fuel to the upstream side of the catalyst has been proposed.

That is, two monoliths are interposed in series in the exhaust passage, and a noble metal-supported catalyst is applied to the upstream monolith, while a metal-supported zeolite catalyst is applied to the downstream monolith, and a reducing agent as a reducing agent is provided between the two catalysts. It is configured so that HC is supplied.
After the catalyst applied to the upstream monolith converts nitrogen monoxide (NO) to nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), the catalyst applied to the downstream monolith converts the converted nitrogen dioxide into nitrogen ( N 2 ), carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and water (H 2 O).

With this configuration, when the exhaust gas discharged from the diesel engine is introduced into the exhaust gas purification device through the exhaust passage, the exhaust gas mixes with the hydrocarbon added by the hydrocarbon adding means, and the exhaust gas and the hydrocarbon are mixed. Is formed. When the air-fuel mixture passes through the monolith and comes into contact with the first catalyst, a steam reforming reaction occurs to generate hydrogen. Then, when the mixture and the hydrogen come into contact with the second catalyst, the nitrogen oxides contained in the exhaust gas react with the hydrogen and the hydrocarbon, respectively, resulting in harmless nitrogen, carbon dioxide and water (steam).
