Campo della tecnica Field of technique
The present invention relates to the use of a white copper-based alloy for the production of naturally antibacterial products, which at the same time have excellent mechanical resistance, easy workability, high ease of cleaning and an aesthetic appearance that is easy to that of stainless steel. The invention also relates to a production method for such products.
Stato dell'arte State of the art
It has been known since ancient times (ancient Egypt) that copper has disinfectant properties. More recently, copper and its alloys (brass) have been investigated for their bactericidal properties on some pathogenic microorganisms [H. T.
Michels, ASTM Standardization NEWS, Ottobre 2006, pagg. Michels, ASTM Standardization NEWS, October 2006, pp. 29-31] and compared with stainless steel, on the surface of which the same pathogens that manage to survive on copper and its alloys for only a few hours, can instead survive 30 or more days, in the absence of disinfectant treatment. US-EPA approved tests have demonstrated the antimicrobial capabilities of copper and brass against Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacter aerogenes, E.Coli 0157: H7, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus).
However, copper and brass have aesthetic and technological characteristics generally considered unsuitable to represent a valid substitute for stainless steel, for example in the construction of artifacts such as sanitary items, sinks, tables, work surfaces for canteens or laboratories, basins for use sanitary ware, cabinets, both because the mechanical characteristics are typically much lower than those of stainless steel, and because they do not have white color, but colors ranging from red, to pink, to yellow. For all these reasons, the use of copper and its alloys in the sanitary field has for the moment been restricted to those components that are not intended to remain in sight, for example hydraulic or air conditioning systems, such as finned heat exchangers.
White copper alloys, such as copper and nickel alloys, are also known for the manufacture of jewelry with an appearance similar to silver and for the manufacture of accessories for clothing, such as buttons and zippers. less and less used for the allergenic effects of nickel, and the so-called "white brass", copper and zinc alloys, with the addition of manganese and / or aluminum, which have progressively replaced the previous ones, such as the alloys described in EP1306453B1 or in US6863746B, in the latter case the alloy described being used to weld objects made of white gold.
Although manganese can have a whitening effect on copper similar to that of nickel, the only known white alloys, non-nickel based and non-brass, are the so-called "manganins", used for the manufacture of electrical resistors due to the low conductivity that the manganese imparts to the copper in the alloy, already starting from a few percentage points.
The purpose of the present invention is therefore to allow the replacement of stainless steel for the manufacture of products intended for use in the health and / or food sector or for which the intrinsic antibacterial properties are in any case important, with a material that is of aesthetic appearance similar to that of stainless steel, has little aptitude to get dirty, is easily cleaned with common cleaning products and, above all, has intrinsic antibacterial characteristics, so as not to require frequent disinfection operations which, instead, requires the 'stainless steel when used in sanitary and / or food applications.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a method of manufacturing manufactured articles, in particular intended for use in the health and / or food sector, which are naturally, or intrinsically, endowed with antibacterial properties, so as not to require frequent disinfection. of the exposed surfaces.

According to the preferred embodiment, the alloy contains manganese in a weight percentage ranging from 15% to 40% and does not contain aluminum and, preferably, not even zinc, except as impurities.
Furthermore, the first and second predetermined percentage of section reduction are of the order of 90% and the annealing step of complete recrystallization of the cold worked is carried out at a temperature between 550 ° C and 750 ° C and for a time of about 4 hours, if done in a static oven, or for a total time of about 45 minutes, if done in a passage oven.
An abrasive brushing phase is carried out in order to remove a surface layer of the annealed cold worked with a thickness of about 4 microns.
In this way, according to the invention and substantially without waste or almost complex artifacts such as sinks, basins, tubs, table worktops, furniture tops, plates, details for bathrooms, or even pipes, bars or wires, can be obtained. for example to make handrails, handles, knobs, sieves etc. having the appearance of stainless steel and at the same time endowed with strong natural or intrinsic antibacterial properties, which make the usual sterilization operations with disinfectants substantially useless, or at least redundant. Analogous stainless steel products are usually subjected to these disinfection operations, among other things with increasingly less effective results as numerous bacterial strains have developed considerable resistance to disinfectants and antibiotics in common use and have therefore become a constant danger, in particularly in a hospital environment, such as MRSA or E.Coli 0157: H7.
Furthermore, according to what has been experimentally ascertained by the Applicant, the antibacterial properties of copper alloys, properties experimentally demonstrated on numerous different bacterial strains, are probably due to the surface migration, and therefore on the exposed surfaces of objects made with these alloys, of copper atoms, migration which is blocked by the presence of aluminum alloy.
Therefore, according to the invention, the presence in aluminum alloy, unless this is present only as an impurity (the presence of impurities is in any case unavoidable) must be avoided.

The plate is subjected to a hot lamination process bringing it to 740 ° C for 3.5 hours and is subsequently laminated obtaining in successive steps a section reduction of about 90%; in particular the thickness is reduced from 115 mm to 10 mm in 8 steps, reaching a final temperature of about 660-670 ° C; the hot laminate is allowed to cool down to about 350 ° C before being forced to cool with water to room temperature.

Subsequently, the hot rolled product, after the milling operation and consequent removal of the oxidized layers and with manganese depletion, is subjected to a cold rolling operation, again obtaining a section reduction of about 90% (from 10 to 0.7 mm thick) in successive steps, with consequent work hardening and increase in hardness. The cold rolled product is subsequently subjected to an annealing heat treatment in a static oven in a reducing atmosphere at 600 ° C for 4 hours for recrystallization. This treatment was chosen on the basis of a series of laboratory tests at different temperatures, in order to detect the optimal treatment, as shown in table 4.

As can be seen, the depletion involves a layer not exceeding 4-5 microns, which can be easily removed with a usual abrasive brushing operation after the heat treatment.
From the comparison between the various materials, it is also clear that the CuMn20 tested alloy is suitable for replacing stainless steel in any application, such as the construction of furniture, tools, worktops, etc., presenting high hardness and high mechanical resistance. , far superior to those of brass.
ESEMPIO 2 EXAMPLE 2
The antimicrobial properties of three different copper alloys are compared, namely the CuMn20 alloy (alloy 3) according to the invention, previously prepared according to the previous examples, a CuSn6Zn6 alloy (alloy 2) and a CuZnlO alloy (alloy 1), with two different reference materials and precisely copper DHP and AISI 304 steel (stainless steel).
Three different pathogenic microorganisms are used for the tests, namely E. coli, MSRA and Listeria monocytogenes.
Flat sheet metal specimens, made in the alloys under test and in the reference materials, each with a size of about 5.5 cm2, are treated with 10 microliters of a suspension of microbial cells in water, having a concentration of about 108 cell units per milliliter .
Subsequently, the specimens are incubated at 37 ° C. The test is repeated 6 times, varying the contact time in incubation. Each specimen is tested with the following times: 0, 5, 10, 20, 40 and 80 minutes.
After the end of each incubation phase, the specimen is recovered and treated with an aqueous solution to remove the pathogens; the solution is subsequently diluted and incorporated into agar and finally the microscopic count of the surviving microbial cells is carried out.
The results obtained are shown in the graphs of figures 2, 3 and 4.
As can be appreciated, the anti-microbial activity of the previously prepared and machined alloy, CuMn20 is substantially very close to that of DHP copper towards all tested pathogenic microorganisms, while stainless steel is substantially devoid of it. The antimicrobial activity of the CuMn20 alloy is also comparable (or better) with the same copper content, than that of the other alloys tested, which, however, have a mechanical resistance and a hardness that make them unsuitable to replace steel. and, above all, they do not have a color comparable to that of steel, while the CuMn20 alloy according to the invention has a metallic white color comparable to that of steel.
ESEMPIO 3 EXAMPLE 3
Four cylindrical ingots with a diameter of 305 mm are prepared using standard copper ingot molds with internal graphite insert in order to reduce the drasticity of the cooling of the metal in the mold and thus avoid the formation of shrinkage cracks. The metal is brought into the melting furnace at a temperature of 1140 ° C and, after the analytical checks to verify the adherence to the nominal composition, it is transferred into the holding furnace; casting began when the metal reached a temperature of 1100 ° C.
L88277 80 .9 19.04 0.025 0.032 <0.01 <0.01 L88278 79.8 20.10 0.012 0.028 <0.01 0.01 L88279 79.5 20.40 0.017 0.039 <0.01 0.01 L88280 79.7 20.20 0.020 0.035 <0.01 <0.01 Subsequently, the ingots are extruded with wires with a diameter of 26 mm double hole, with a 4000 ton press in an extrusion temperature range from 770 to 800 ° C, investing the outgoing wires with water coming from special sprayers to limit the oxidation of the alloy and / or the depletion of Mn. In these conditions the power absorbed by the press, expressed in tons, varies from 2000 to 2300 due to the high mechanical characteristics of the Cu80Mn20 alloy. From a metallographic point of view, the best results, both as regards the average diameter of the grain and as regards its homogeneity, were obtained with an extrusion temperature equal to 780 ° C. Still subsequently, the extrusions are rolled up to a diameter of 20 mm and an annealing is then carried out at 650 ° C for 3 hours in a reducing atmosphere. Various cold plastic deformation operations (drawing) are then carried out, passing from a semi-finished product with a diameter of 20 mm to a wire with a diameter of 2.08 mm, with execution of an intermediate stage of milling from 5.70 to 5.30 mm to remove the oxidation and depletion layers in Mn, whose depth is lower than that found for the analogous layers of Example 1 for the laminates. Finally, after a complete recrystallization annealing carried out at 650 ° C for 3 hours in a reducing atmosphere, the wires are subjected to a final phase of cold drawing with a diameter of 2 mm or 1.80 mm, in order to obtain a hardening of 7 , 4% or, respectively, 25% and thus give rise, with the same alloy, to a final material in wire in a semi-hard or hard physical state. As a final step, any brushing ensures the absence of superficial oxide layers or layers affected by Mn depletion.
The values of the mechanical characteristics obtainable through the drawing operations, according to the different possible hardenings, are shown in the table Tab. 10 Synoptic table of the average values of Rm, Rp and HV measured during the cold plastic deformation cycle as a function of the ™ Percentage hardening suffered by the Cu80Mn20 wire.

ESEMPIO 4 EXAMPLE 4
Cu80Mn20 alloy billets are extruded underwater into tubes with a diameter of 110 mm, wall thickness 11 mm, in order to limit the formation of surface oxides and / or layers affected by Mn depletion.
The extrusion of the billet in the form of a tube is carried out in an extrusion temperature range between 790 and 805 ° C. In these conditions the power absorbed by the press, expressed in bars, was about 290, which is an acceptable value considering the high mechanical characteristics of the Cu80Mn20 alloy.
Subsequently, a cold plastic deformation processing is carried out using a pilgrim pitch rolling mill set at 70 strokes per minute with an advance of 11.11 mm until obtaining pipes with a diameter of 45 mm for 2.25 mm of wall thickness and still later, the semi-finished products thus obtained are subjected to a single cold straight drawing operation at a diameter of 35 mm for a thickness of 1.90 mm and subsequent annealing at 650 ° C for 4 hours in a reducing atmosphere. Subsequently, a series of coil drawing operations are carried out (with spinners) up to a diameter of 9.52 mm by 0.45 mm of thickness and final annealing at 650 ° C for 4 hours in a passage furnace with a reducing atmosphere. Any final brushing ensures the absence of superficial oxide layers and / or layers affected by Mn depletion.
