Description
Tank for the bioconversion of organic waste in industrial systems based on the use of scavenger insects.
Some applications are known to the state of the art in which larvae of various types of insects are used for the treatment of solid urban waste.
In the international patent application WO2012029041 an automatic plant and a method for the biotreatment by means of insect larvae of organic waste of various kinds by means of a bioreactor capable of accumulating inside the compost produced by the waste treatment is described. The same document describes the use of one or more species of diptera in the larval stage for the application of the biotreatment method, to be chosen according to the matrix or combination of organic matrices to be treated. The system configuration described also allows you to adjust the operating cycle according to the habits and life cycle of the living organisms used. The described method can also be used for the treatment of waste categories for which satisfactory treatment techniques are not known in the state of the art.
In the United States patent US5759224 an apparatus and a method for the continuous treatment of waste by means of fly larvae are described. The cited document describes a plant consisting of a conveyor belt, a means for distributing the shredded waste into grains on the conveyor belt, a means for depositing the larvae on the waste itself, a means for removing the larvae from the waste at the end of the digestion process and a means of removing the waste itself from the conveyor belt. The invention applies to the treatment of "large quantities of rotting wet waste". The method described consists in depositing the waste in a specific area of the conveyor belt and depositing the larvae (or their eggs) on it.
In the American patent US6391620 a further method is described for the continuous bioconversion of putrescible waste whose characteristic is that while a living organism bioconverts the putrescible waste in the superficial part of the waste accumulation, the underlying part already treated is removed by means of a system digger. In patent US6579713, a system for the removal of water from waste and a drainage system is added to what is described in the document just mentioned. The system for moving the waste is formed by a blade integrally linked to a chain moved by a motor.
There are also some state-of-the-art applications aimed at treating small quantities of waste by means of Hermetia illucens larvae. In US patent US6780637 a domestic waste treatment system is described, consisting substantially of a substantially round container for the collection of waste (sewage or wet waste) inside which there is an inclined surface (ramp type) which is traveled uphill by the larvae of Hermetia illucens which then slide, by means of a special conduit, into a container for the collection of the larvae themselves.
Some of these applications known to the state of the art are limited, as they only allow the continuous treatment of waste, with the need to have spaces for the storage of the compost produced continuously by the plant awaiting transport, which economically it can only take place once a certain amount of treated waste has been reached.
The only systems that provide for a “batch” treatment, ie with the periodic filling and emptying of the container in which the waste is treated, are documents WO2012029041 and US 6780637.
Patent WO2012029041 provides for a method of introducing the wastewater to be treated functional to the development stage of the larvae used and for this characteristic it can be used in industrial batch treatments. US patent 6780637 is addressed to domestic applications and, due to its configuration, if applied on a large scale, has the disadvantage of the manual management of a large number of containers with evident limitations on the quantity of treatable waste. All the large-scale use systems presented in US6780637 (Figures 7 to 10) in fact provide for the use of a larvae collection system common to a plurality of containers. A further limitation of the device described in US6780637 is that it does not provide for the possibility of actively influencing the cycle of waste treatment and collection of larvae, with obvious repercussions on the overall efficiency of the process.
The present invention relates to a tank for the treatment and bioconversion of organic waste and organic waste matrices by means of insect larvae, optimized for the exploitation of the ethological behaviors of diptera in order to improve the efficiency of the process and allow its exploitation. for industrial purposes.
The tank, equipped with several layers or casings, as described in detail later in this document, is also optimized for use in industrial plants for automated or semi-automated storage, in which considerable quantities of waste are treated, allowing a considerable reduction. of the necessary overall dimensions, since the systems that use the tank according to the invention can develop in height.
The present invention therefore provides a tank for the treatment of waste by means of scavengers comprising at least one inclined ramp that connects the base of the tank with the lateral surface of the same and at least one opening made in the lateral surface of the tank at the top of the tank. said ramp, characterized in that said tank has a plan shape comprising at least one corner and said at least one inclined ramp is positioned at said corner.
These and other advantages will be evident from the detailed description of the invention which will refer to the attached figures 1 to 10.
It should be noted, for the sake of clarity, that in the present application the term module will refer to the set of a tank (1), an external shell (2) and a lid (3) as described in detail below. .
Figure 6 shows an axonometric view of the tank (1) for the treatment of waste according to the present invention. It is a substantially rectangular shaped basin, open at the top.
The tank (1) is configured to accommodate a certain amount of waste that will be treated by means of diptera larvae suitably inserted in the tank at the beginning of the treatment, and its shape and configuration are optimized to exploit the ethological mechanisms of the diptera saprophages, in order to induce, at the right moment, the dipters to move away from the bed of waste treated inside the tank (1).
During the development of this device it has been observed that the larvae used in the waste digestion process, when they intend to exit from a pile of waste that is inside a container with a substantially rectangular base, walking along the edges of the container tend to accumulate in the corners of the same. This spontaneous behavior of the larvae, not known in the state of the art, has been exploited to create a waste treatment tank optimized for use in industrial plants, in which the use of containers with a shape other than rectangular it would not allow an optimal use of space.
In particular, the tank (1) has a substantially rectangular plan shape, as can be seen for example in Figure 3, and is equipped with at least one ramp (11) in correspondence with at least one corner (12) of its base. Preferably the tank (1) is equipped with ramps (11) at all four corners (12).
For the sake of clarity, it is specified that evidently the presence of the ramps modifies, from a geometric point of view, the base rectangle of the tank (1). It is also quite evident from the analysis of the figures that the term rectangular refers to the shape that the tank would have in the absence of the ramps, and that the presence of the ramps means that the shape of the base side of the tank is in fact that of a rectangle with rounded corners.
The ramps (11), as evident from the detail view in figure 6 and from the sectional view in figure 2, are inclined surfaces which, near the corners, connect the base (14) of the tank (1) with the relative edge ( 15).
The inclination of the ramps must not be excessive, in such a way as to allow the larvae to climb on them without sliding downwards, and at the same time must be sufficiently steep, so as to allow to cover the height (h) between the base (14) of the tank (1) and the top of the ramp (11) subtracting the smallest possible amount of volume useful for waste treatment from the tank (1). For this purpose, ramps with a maximum inclination, defined by the angle α in figure 4, of 60 ° can conveniently be created.
According to a first preferential embodiment, the ramps (11) are flat surfaces; according to a further preferential embodiment, the ramps can have a curved shape instead of a planar one, in order to connect, as far as possible, their surface with that of the side walls (16,17) of the tank (1) and further facilitate the ascent of the larvae along the edge between the wall and the ramp itself.
At the top of each ramp (11) there is an opening (18), from which the larvae will come out on their way away from the heap of waste.
It should be emphasized that, if the ethological behavior of the larvae described in the present patent application had not been observed, no technician would have positioned the ramps for the exit of the larvae at the corners of the bio-treatment tank, since this choice requires decrease the useful width of the ramps (11) and, above all, the size of the opening (18) located at the top of each ramp.
Conveniently, the tank (1) can also be equipped with protection means (19), configured so as to allow access to said opening (18) only by following the ramp (11) in an ascending direction. This prevents the possibility that part of the waste introduced into the tank (1) from the upper opening can end up in the opening (18) and then be collected in the outer shell. Said protection means (19) may include gates having the same inclination as the ramp (11) and protruding with respect to the opening (18). Preferably said protection means (19) are of the removable type.
In order to collect the larvae that come out of the opening (18) of the tank (1) located at the top of each ramp (11) and the leachate deriving from the digestive activity of the larvae that comes out of the tank through the openings (10) for the purpose present on the bottom of the tank (1), as well as to allow effective storage of the tank (1) in controlled climatic conditions, the tank can be associated with an external shell (2) structured so as to contain the tank (1) inside. Said shell (2) is preferably insulated, in order to limit heat exchanges between the inside and outside of the module.
Said openings (10) are preferably protected by grids or, in any case, are of such dimensions as to allow the escape of liquids but not of waste or larvae. Possibly the bottom of said tank (1) can have a slight slope towards said openings, to facilitate the outflow of the liquid.
A lid (3) is also preferably associated with the tank (1) and the shell (2). The lid (3) or the shell (2) are associated with means (31, 33) for the distribution and recovery of air from inside the tank (1). Said means are preferably associated with the lid (3), as shown in figure 7, and comprise one or more ducts configured to be associated with external ventilation and air conditioning means.
Since the means of ventilation and air conditioning are known in the state of the art, they will not be further described in this application. We simply say that these are air recirculation means capable of moving the air and controlling its temperature and humidity. It is also specified that in an industrial plant comprising a plurality of modules of the type described, the ventilation and air treatment means are preferably centralized, meaning that they are capable of serving a plurality of modules by means of suitable ducts of the air.
Furthermore, temperature and humidity sensors are preferably installed on the air intake ducts near each tank to monitor the conditions inside the tank. Preferably but not limitingly, said sensors are installed in the part of the pipelines that remains bound to the system when the module is moved. The signals detected by these sensors are used to control the means of ventilation and air treatment in order to maintain the optimal conditions for the treatment cycle inside the tank, as described below. Similarly, each module is preferably associated with means (32) for introducing liquid into the tank, possibly nebulized, in order to control the humidity inside the tank.
A sectional view of the shell (2) containing the inner tank (1) is shown in figure 2.
The outer shell (2) is configured in such a way as to collect the larvae which, on their way away from the heap of waste treated inside the tank (1), come out from one of the openings (18) located at the top of the ramps (11 ).
The tank (1) and the outer shell (2) are also preferably configured so that the top of the side walls of the tank (1) is lower than the top of the side walls of the shells (2) by a height h1, as shown in figure 2, in order to further improve the confinement of the space inside the tank (1) with respect to the external environment.
This measure serves to significantly reduce the likelihood that some larvae can escape from the system. In fact, the larvae that should climb over the upper edge of the internal tank (1) not in correspondence with the openings (18) but in generic positions along the edges of the tank, would be collected by the external shell (2), similarly to what happens for the larvae that enter the openings (18), without the possibility of escape.
Eventually the outer shell (2), at the upper edge (210) of the four inner faces (21), can be equipped with an electrified fence (E), schematically shown in figure 8, consisting of a conducting metal filament that runs uninterrupted on said faces, so as to prevent the larvae from insinuating themselves beyond the containment margin of the external tank and, possibly, escaping from said shell.
It is known in the state of the art that environmental conditions can induce the larvae to migrate outside the pile of waste they are feeding on, in particular when the temperature rises or when the oxygen concentration decreases.
For this reason, the treatment module according to the present invention preferably comprises, in addition to the tank (1) and the outer shell (2), also a lid (3), of the removable type, suitable for closing the outer shell (2). The cover is shown axonometric in figure 7 and in section, installed on the module, in figure 2.
The application of the lid, in addition to allowing the maintenance of a controlled climate throughout the process, can be functional to induce a massive, spontaneous and synchronized removal of the larvae from the waste heap. In fact, when, at a certain stage of the treatment process, the flow of air is interrupted or the lid (3) is positioned to close the outer shell (2), the oxidation of the heap of organic waste causes a lowering of the concentration of oxygen inside the tank (1) and induces the larvae to move away.
In fact, the separation between the internal tank (1) and the space between the internal tank (1) and the external shell (2) causes the carbon dioxide resulting from the oxidation of the waste to accumulate in the internal tank before it the external one. The internal tank (1) and the external shell (2) communicate with each other, as already described, only at the upper edge and the openings (18) located in the four corners. Therefore the carbon dioxide, which is produced in the system starting from the bottom of the internal tank, must reach the upper edge of the internal tank before invading the external tank.
In fact, in the space between the tank (1) and the shell (2) there are no significant quantities of waste that can, oxidizing, cause the concentration of oxygen to drop, and therefore in the shell (3) there is a greater concentration of oxygen than in the tub (1).
The shell (2) can also, if necessary, be equipped with grilled openings towards the outside, of such dimensions as to allow a change of air in the space between the shell (2) and the tank (1) but not the escape of the larvae .
Having described the components of the system, it is now possible to describe how they are functional in optimizing the treatment of waste and organic matrices by means of diptera larvae.
In a first phase of treatment, the waste is introduced into the tank (1) contained within the shell (2), and an appropriate amount of diptera or diptera larvae is deposited on them. In the first phase of the treatment it is necessary that there are no substantial variations in the concentration of oxygen available to the larvae, therefore either the lid (3) is not installed to close the tank (and in this way a natural exchange of the air is obtained) or the cover (3) is installed and the air exchange is obtained by means of the ventilation means already described. In this phase, the diptera bioconvert the waste, using it as a growth substrate. As just mentioned, since the tank is open in this phase, no significant variation of oxygen is observed inside the tank (1). Alternatively, during the first treatment phase, the tank (1) can be closed by the lid (3), and the means of ventilation and air treatment can be used to keep the concentration of oxygen inside the tank substantially constant.
In a subsequent phase of the treatment, the lid (3) is placed on the tank (1) or, if the lid was also present during the first phase, the ventilation means are deactivated.
Upon application of the lid (or when the ventilation equipment is switched off), and due to the subsequent drop in oxygen concentration in the tank (1), the larvae spontaneously begin to move away from the waste heap along the edges of the tank (1), until reaching the edges where the ramps (11) are located which allow the larvae to leave the heap of waste by exiting the tank (1) by means of the openings (18) positioned in the corners and accumulating in the outer shell (2) .
In this phase, therefore, the ethological behavior of the larvae, which was not previously known, is exploited and which has allowed the present invention to be developed. In fact, as anticipated, during the development activities of this device it was observed that the larvae used in the waste digestion process, when they intend to exit a pile of waste that is inside a container with a substantially rectangular base, walking along the edges of the container they tend to accumulate in the corners of the same The outer shell (2) can be configured in such a way as to recover both the liquid manure of insects in bioconversion activity on the bottom, and the liquid leaked from the waste not yet treated and introduced into the basin.
According to a further preferential embodiment, the device according to the present invention can comprise means for transmitting vibrations to the internal tank (1). The vibrations create a condition of discomfort in the larvae, which are then stimulated to move away from the internal tank. Means for the transmission of vibrations known in the state of the art can be used to transmit vibrations with frequencies up to 200Hz to the internal tank, and preferably up to 50Hz.
With reference to the outer shell (2), as already described, it must be configured to perform the functions of:
- Contenere la vasca interna (1); - Contain the internal tank (1);
- Raccogliere il liquido percolante dalla vasca interna; detto liquido, che può essere utilizzato per modificare l’umidità dei rifiuti all’interno della vasca (1) può provenire dalla rete idrica oppure essere costituito da percolato che può provenire da una vasca utilizzata per la ricezione dei rifiuti nell’impianto di trattamento (che diversamente dovrebbe essere smaltito come rifiuto speciale) e/o dallo svuotamento periodico dei moduli; - Collect the percolating liquid from the internal tank; said liquid, which can be used to modify the humidity of the waste inside the tank (1), can come from the water network or be made up of leachate that can come from a tank used to receive waste in the treatment plant ( which otherwise should be disposed of as special waste) and / or by periodic emptying of the modules;
- Raccogliere le larve che abbandonano il cumulo di rifiuti in trattamento; - Collect the larvae that leave the heap of waste being treated;
- To act as an insulation casing for the internal tank in storage systems where the air conditioning is distributed to the individual tanks and these are isolated from the storage environment itself.
- Optimize the overall dimensions when a plurality of modules such as the one described are used in industrial storage systems similar to automatic warehouses.
To this end, according to a preferential embodiment, the shell (2) has a shape that can be substantially approximated to a parallelepiped.
According to a further preferred embodiment, the shell (2) is equipped with means to facilitate its use in rapid handling systems. Said rapid handling means can comprise wheels, rollers and guides for sliding on rails and / or jibs for lifting by fork-lift trucks or alternatively handling systems with shuttles or alternatively handling systems by means of bridge crane or by means of catenary or belt systems. .
The shell can also conveniently be equipped with shock absorbers, capable of preventing direct collisions between the tanks in the aforementioned handling systems.
A plurality of modules of the type just described, each comprising an internal tank (1), an external shell (2) and a lid (3) can be used inside industrial waste treatment plants, in which the modules can be stored on metal carpentry structures, equipped with a plurality of housing for the modules.
From their positions the individual modules can be extracted and moved individually, for example by means of forklifts, in order to insert the waste for treatment, remove the compost obtained from larval digestion at the end of the treatment, recover the larvae from the outer shell and proceed to washing the modules themselves.
Eventually the modules can be configured so that the cover of each module remains anchored to the metal structure when the module is moved. In this way, there is no need to couple and uncouple the means of ventilation and liquid supply for handling.
Preferably but not limitingly, the contact area between the lid (3) and the outer shell (2) can be equipped with an inflatable seal, installed on the lid itself and configured in such a way as to be able to exercise an air seal, if inflated, between the shell (2) and the cover (3). In this way there is therefore no need to move the shell (2) until it comes into complete contact with the lid (3), but it is sufficient to position it under the lid at a distance less than that which can be occupied by the gasket when it inflates. , to allow you to close the tank and carry out the treatment as described.
