Abstract

An aluminium object is manufactured by means of a process including conversion coating of the aluminium object to chromate, the sequential application of a basecoat to the outside surface and the subsequent application of a basecoat forming the substrate, vacuum metal coating of a metal which has a tendency to corrode the basecoat to form "islands" of metal which are covered over with a transparent resin layer to encapsulate and isolate the islands. These have a thickness of less than one thousand angstroms and a mean diameter of less than three thousand angstroms. The island structure is etched after the metal has accreted as a deposit between the stage of nucleation and that of channelling, forming an electrically conducting film.
