Abstract

Cast iron cooling plates for metallurgical furnaces contg. cooling tubes with a different coefft. of expansion from the cast iron are produced by dividing the mould by two partitions near the inlet and outlet connections for the tubes in three parts. The partitions are formed by compensating spacers (asbestos) and the centre part is cast first. After it has cooled down to the ambient temp. the two end sections are cast. This eliminates casting stresses in the tubes and prevents their carburisation (due to the shorter time of contact with the hot cast iron). Thermal stresses arising in operation have less effect, and the life of the cooling plates is longer.
