Abstract

Apparatus comprises a base plate 10, a clutch plate holder 20 and a misalignment adjuster 60. The clutch plate holder 20 consists of a tail stock 22 having a running centre 24, and a head stock 26 having a running centre 28. Rotation of handle 30 turns the screw thread 32 and thus moves running centre 28 towards or away from running centre 24. Misalignment of a clutch plate may be corrected using the misalignment adjuster 60. To adjust a clutch, the cross- slide 66 is advanced until the clutch plate is located between fingers 68 of the tool 70. Rotation of handle 72 rotates a screw-thread 74 which moves the tool 70 to the left or right.

Description

APPARATUS FOR DETECTING AND CORRECTING MISALIGNMENT OF CLUTCH PLATES / \ The present invention relates to apparatus for detecting and correcting misalignment of clutch plates.
For clutch plates to operate effectively, they must, when rotating, be running true within a small tolerance usually in the range of 0.05 to 0.15 mm. Thus when manufacturing or reconditioning clutch plates it is necessary to test and if necessary correct the misalignment of clutch plates.
The object of the invention is to provide an apparatus which may be used to perform both functions.
The present invention provides apparatus for correcting misalignment of clutch plates comprising a clutch plate holding means having a pair of running centres, means for adjusting the distance between said centres so as to accommodate plates of different thicknesses and a misalignment adjuster comprising a gripping element for gripping the edge of a clutch plate and means for moving said gripping element so as to correct a misalignment of a clutch plate.
The invention will hereinafter be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings which show, by way of example only, one embodiment according to * the invention. In the drawings: i - 2 Figure 1 is a side view of apparatus for detecting and correcting misalignment of clutch plates according to the invention, and Figure 2 is a plan view of the apparatus.
Referring to the drawings, the apparatus for detecting and correcting misalignment comprises a base plate 10, a clutch plate holder 20 and a misalignment adjuster 60.
The clutch plate holder 20. consists of a tail 10 stock 22 having a running centre 24, i.e. a centre mounted in bearings 25 in the tail stock and thus freely rotatable, and a head stock 26 having a running centre 28. Rotation of handle 30 turns the screw thread 32 and thus moves running centre 28 towards or away from running 15 centre 24. In this way clutch plates of different thicknesses can be accommodated in the clutch plate holder .
When a clutch plate is mounted on the holder 20, an operator spins the clutch plate by hand. A skilled operator can detect whether or not any misalignment is present in the plate by observing the rotation of the plate. If necessary, however, a reading dial (not shown) as used in machining operations may be used with the apparatus. The magnetic base of the reading dial may be attached to the base plate 10.
If any misalignment of a clutch plate is detected; then the misalignment may be corrected using the misalignment adjuster 60 which is mounted on a base plate 61. A slot 11 is provided in the base plate 10 and into \ which locate attachment elements 62 of the base plate 61. y A slot 64 is provided in the base plate 61 perpendicular to slot 11. The adjustment cross-slide 66 is located in this slot 64 and clamped in position. To adjust a clutch, the cross-slide 66 is advanced until the clutch plate is located between fingers 68 of the tool 70. Rotation of handle 72 rotates screw-thread 74 which moves the tool 70 to the left or right as shown in Figure 2.
A different sized tool 70 may be used simply by removing locknut 80 to allow the tool to be changed.

Claims (2)

1. Apparatus for correcting misalignment of clutch plates comprising a clutch plate holding means having a pair of running centres, means for adjusting the distance 5 between said centres so as to accommodate plates of different thicknesses and a misalignment adjuster comprising a gripping element for gripping the edge of a clutch plate and means for moving said gripping element so as to correct a misalignment of a clutch plate. 10 2.
