Abstract

1425640 Welding by fusion E A ANDRIOLA and A A RUBIO 20 Feb 1973 [26 Feb 1972] 8202/73 Heading B3R [Also in Division H5] In a non-consumable (tungsten) electrode inert gas (helium or argon)-shielded arc welding torch, e.g. for use in welding titanium, the shielding gas emerging from the torch is shrouded by a quartz or heat-resistant glass nozzle 2 and the torch is water cooled. As shown, the torch comprises a barrel 1 and handle 5 of plastics material. The barrel encloses two nested members 7, 8 welded together and providing an inter-member cooling chamber 13-15. A slotted collet 10, pressed by a nut 10<SP>1</SP> into engagement with a guide 6 retains a tungsten electrode rod 3. Cooling water is circulated through a handle duct (20), ducts 18, 16, the chambers 13-15, a duct 18<SP>1</SP> and a further handle duct (21), and gas is fed through a handle duct (20<SP>1</SP>), a duct 19, an annular space between the member 7 and the collet 10 and slots 11 in the guide 6 into a bulbous portion (51) of the nozzle 2. The duets 20, 20<SP>1</SP>, 21 are connected to flexible pipes. The return water duct 21 also serves as a current feed being connected to a cable within its corresponding flexible pipe. The outlet of the nozzle 2 may be circular or elliptical to suit the welding effected. The nozzle bulbous portion (51) engenders turbulence to prevent breaking up of the gas-shield when a filler rod is introduced. [GB1425640A]
