Abstract

1361879 Benzoyl esters of 1,8,9-anthracenetriols STERLING WINTHROP GROUP Ltd 23 Nov 1972 [26 Nov 1971] 54927/71 Heading C2C [Also in Division A5] Novel substituted-benzoyl esters of a 1,8,9- anthracenetriol are prepared by reaction of an appropriate 1,8,9-anthracenetriol with a benzoic acid or a functional derivative thereof (preferably the acid chloride) in an inert solvent, in the presence of a catalyst (preferably a nitrogenous base) and under an inert atmosphere. The esters have the general Formula (I) in which each R is hydrogen or an X, Y-substituted benzoyl group and at least one R is the said benzoyl group. X is halogen, hydroxy, nitro, alkyl, alkoxy, aryloxy trifluoromethyl or an optionally substituted alkyl- or aryl-carboxy group, Y is hydrogen or X and R 1 is hydrogen or methyl. Compounds prepared are the tribenzoyl esters in which Y is hydrogen X is nitro, hydroxymethyl, acetoxy or chloro and R 1 is hydrogen and also 1,8,9-tri-(2-hydroxy-benzoyloxy)-3-methyl-anthracene and the mono- or di- (2-acetoxy-benzoyl)esters of 1,8,9-anthracenetriol. These anthracene derivatives are useful in treating inflammatory conditions of the skin and form with a suitable vehicle a pharmaceutical composition which may be administered topically. The composition may also contain salicylic acid and/or hydrocortisone. [GB1361879A]
