Abstract

1389246 Extrusion coating wires LYNENWERK KG 3 March 1972 [28 Oct 1971] 10072/72 Heading B5A In an extruder crosshead die for applying plastics sheathing and reinforcing or strain relieving elements to conductors, two sheaths, e.g. of polythene are formed and reinforcing threads, e.g. glass filaments, are fed between the two sheaths via converging feed channels 24 symmetrically spaced within members 15, 16 and 17 forming a cone secured within the die body 2. Plastics material is fed by a screw extruder through passage 10 and is deflected into annular passage 26. Part of the plastic melt flows down conical passage 34 to form the outer sheath between a die 5 and member 15. The remainder is diverted through radial slots 29 passing between channels 24 carrying the reinforcing threads into converging passages 30 leading to an annular cavity 31. The melt passes from cavity 31 between member 15 and a nipple 22 to form the inner sheath directly on the conductor passing through passageway 1. The nipple 22 is attached to a tube 21 adjustably mounted in a tubular extension 18 of member 16. Between the members 16 and 17 the channels 24 carrying the reinforcing threads pass through an annular chamber 39, 40 to which vacuum is applied through passages 38 to prevent bubbles forming within the sheath. The die is heated by electrical heaters 12, 13 and 14 and the channels 24 may have heated rearward extensions. The channels 24 have ceramic entry bushes 25 and the holder 6 for die 5 is adjustable by centring screws 9. [GB1389246A]
