Abstract

1347081 Extrusion coated filters BRITISHAMERICAN TOBACCO CO Ltd 2 March 1972 [12 March 1971] 6693/71 Heading B5A [Also in Division A2] An extruder cross-head die 37 is used for applying a plastics wrapper 2 having ribs 3 to a continuous tubular assembly 10a of spaced plugs 5 within a continuous tube of smokefilter paper 1, as a stage in the manufacture of tobacco-smoke filters (see Division A2). Plastics material is fed under pressure through a feed duct 38, a divided tapering distribution duct 38<SP>1</SP> extending forwardly around a nozzle carrier 39, and annular passages 40, 40<SP>1</SP>, to an annular die outlet 41 formed between an outer nozzle element 42 and an inner nozzle element 43. The assembly 10a passes co-axially through the die by way of bores 44, 44<SP>1</SP> leading to the outlet 45 of the nozzle element 43. The bores 44 are of larger diameter than the assembly 10a and compressed air is blown into said bores to facilitate passage of the assembly through the closer fitting bore 44<SP>1</SP> and to provide a cooling effect there. The ribs 3 are produced by longitudinal grooves formed at 46 in the outside surface of the nozzle element 43. The die body is heated by electrical elements, one of which is seen at 48.
