Abstract

1368061 Coating glass fibres IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 5 Aug 1971 [5 Aug 1970 30 March 1971] 37801/70 and 8165/71 Heading D1P [Also in Divisions B2 and B5] A process of producing a continuous or discontinuous polymer coating on a glass fibre comprises (i) applying to the glass fibre a dispersion of film-forming polymer in an organic liquid in which the polymer is insoluble, the dispersion having been prepared by polymerising a monomer in an organic liquid to form a disperse polymer insoluble in the liquid, in the presence in the liquid of a stabiliser which is a block or graft copolymer containing at least two types of polymeric component, one type of component being solvated by the liquid and another type of component of different polarity being relatively non-solvated and associated with the disperse polymer particles, and (ii) removing the organic liquid from the fibre. The glass fibre, which may be of fused silica or of lime-alumina-boro-silicate, may be in the form of an individual filament, a plurality of filaments drawn together, or a strand. The dispersion may be applied to the fibre by spraying, immersion or padding. The treated fibre may be freed from organic liquid at one temperature and then heated at a second higher temperature, e.g. up to 350‹C to coalesce the polymer. The glass fibre may be pre-treated with an aqueous dispersion of poly (vinyl acetate) and a coupling, agent, e.g. an organosilane for improving adhesion between the fibre surface and the polymer coating. Alternatively the dispersion may contain the coupling agent, either as a separate component or as a group present in the solvated component of the stabiliser. The organic liquid may comprise an aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon. The disperse polymer may comprise an addition polymer such as polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene or polypropylene, or a condensation polymer such as a polyamide or a saturated or unsaturated polyester. The condensation polymer may be cross-linkable. The organic liquid in which the polymer dispersion is made may be modified for the treatment of the fibre by adding to it, after the preparation of the dispersion, one or more other liquids miscible therewith, e.g. a coalescing solvent or swelling agent for the polymer. Specifications 1,122,397, 1,095,932, 1,095,931 and 941,305 are referred to. Specification 1,268,132 is disclaimed. [GB1368061A]
