Abstract

999,287. Hot-water supply systems. ELSY & GIBBONS Ltd. Sept. 24, 1962 [June 22, 1961], No. 22711/61. Heading F4A. A combined supply and storage tank assembly for hot water which facilitates the rapid heating of a small quantity, e.g. 3-5 gallons, of water in addition to the more lengthy heating of a larger quantity, say 25 gallons, comprises an open-topped main tank 1 supplied with water through a connection 9 from a ball-cock controlled cistern 5 and a smaller totally enclosed tank 4 which is located below the level of water in tank 1. The tank 1 is connected from an upper level by means of internal and external pipes 11, 12 to a low level of the small tank 4 and both tanks 1, 4 are provided with means 15, 16 for fitting electrical immersion heaters. The smaller tank 4 is provided in addition with a vent pipe 13, a supply branch 14 and bottom union connections 21, 23 with an internal riser pipe 22 from the connection 23. If the tank assembly is used in conjunction with an external solid fuel-fired boiler, flow to the boiler takes place from a connection 20 in the bottom of the tank 1 and the connection 23 and pipe 22 in the smaller tank form the return flow connections from the boiler. The upper part of the tank 1 is recessed to accommodate the cistern 5 and the gaps 17, 19 between the tanks may be filled with thermally insulating material. In a modification (Fig. 4, not shown), the tank 4 is located wholly within the larger tank 1. In a further modification (Fig. 5, not shown), the tank assembly is used in conjunction with a gas-fired heater and the outlets 20, 21 of both tanks are connected to a three-way valve, allowing both tanks or only the smaller one to be connected to the heater.
