An aid' for a physically handicapped person comprises a frame 1 adapted to serve as a seat or as a base to support a seat, the frame being pivotally mounted on a support 4 for movement between horizontal and raised positions, tension springs 16 urging, the frame to the raised position, the length of the frame 1 and/or the height of the support 4 being adjustable. As shown in Fig. 1, tubular members 7 to which the frame 1 is pivoted are axially adjustable in legs 6 of the support 4. The members 7 are locked in adjusted position by passing pins 9 through selected aligned holes in the members 7 and legs 6. The tension of the spring 16 may be adjusted by engaging one end of the spring ondifferent pins 14, Fig. 3. In a modification shown in Fig. 4 the tip-up frame is adjustable in length, a U-shaped member 18 being slidable in the side limbs 1 of the frame and secured in desired position by screws 19. The springs 16 are engaged in housings 20 each provided at its lower end with a pin 21 to engage one of a series of slots in plates 22 provided on the legs 6. This allows the tension of the springs 16 to remain unaltered when the tubular members 7 are adjusted in the legs 6, the slots in the plates being the same distance apart as the holes in the members 7. In a further modification shown in Figs. 9 and 10 a tip-up frame comprises a U-shaped member 18 engageable in the open rear ends of side limbs 1 which are welded' to plates 32 pivoted at 33 to lugs 31 formed on rods 30 which slide in the forward ends of a chair frame 27. On releasing springs 16 and removing U-shaped member 18 the chair may be folded, Fig. 9.
