Abstract
An adhesive composition which hardens in the cold comprises an acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymer, an unsaturated polymerizable polyester, an aliphatic ester of methacrylic acid, a readily volatile solvent, a radical-forming polymerization catalyst and a compound which activates the catalyst. The ratio by weight between the acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymer and the unsaturated polyester is preferably from 1 : 1 to 1 : 4 and preferably 1 to 4 parts by weight of aliphatic methacrylate are used per part by weight of the unhardened unsaturated polyester. The molar ratio between acrylonitrile and butadiene in the copolymer thereof is preferably from 20 : 80 to 50 : 50. Readily volatile solvents mentioned are vinyl acetate and vinyl methyl ether. Conventional unsaturated polyester resins, catalysts and activators are used. The adhesive composition may be made by forming two or three groups of the components which are combined immediately prior to use of the adhesive. In the Examples: (1) Components (A), (B) and (C) are mixed together, component (A) consisting of an acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymer dissolved in vinyl acetate, an unsaturated polyester formed from maleic and phthalic acids and propylene glycol and dissolved in vinyl acetate, a solution of cobalt octoate in dioctyl phthalate and finely divided powdered silicon, component (B) containing lauroyl peroxide and a solution of dimethyl aniline in styrene and component (C) being methyl ethyl ketone peroxide in dimethyl phthalate; (2) components (A1), (B1) and (C1) are mixed, component (A1) consisting of the copolymer in vinyl acetate, an unsaturated polyester formed from fumaric and tetrachlorophthalic acids and propylene glycol and dissolved in vinyl acetate, cobalt octoate dissolved in dioctyl phthalate and silicon dioxide, component (B1) is methylmethacrylate and component (C1) is methylethylketone peroxide and benzoyl peroxide in dimethylphthalate; (3) components (A11) and (B11) are mixed, component (A11) being the same as component (A1) plus component (B1) except that the polyester is formed from maleic and isophthalic acids and diethylene glycol and component (B11) being the same as component (C1).
