[Also in Divisions F1 and F2] A bascule bridge 2, Fig. 1, is raised and lowered about a pivot 3 on an abutment 5 by a hydraulic drive system (Division F1) having a pair of piston and cylinder devices 7, 10 connected to a pivot 11 on the bridge and a fixed pivot 8. A brake is associated with each device and is normally engaged to retain the bridge in its raised or lowered position and is released by hydraulic pressure when the bridge is to be raised or lowered. A counterweight 6 is provided to reduce the effort required to move the bridge. In another embodiment, a bridge 103, Fig. 7, without a counterweight, may be raised or lowered by a pair of hydraulic cylinders 100, 101 connected together at a pivot 106 and to a pivot 102 on the bridge and a fixed pivot 104. A third hydraulic cylinder 105 is connected to the pivot 106. One or other of the cylinders 100 or 101 may be replaced by a solid linkage. Specification 997,816 is referred to.
