Abstract

864,558. Hydraulic brakes. BRINK, VAN DEN, W. J. Jan. 19, 1960 [Jan. 19, 1959], No. 1829/60. Class 103 (1). An hydraulic brake system comprises a master brake cylinder having two bores 2 and 3 in which pistons 4 and 5 linked to a brake pedal are movable, and a compensator in the form of a double-ended piston 27 movable in a compensator cylinder, one end of which is connected to one of the bores 2 through a first valve means 32, which is substantially hydraulically sealed when the compensator piston is at one end 34 of the compensator cylinder and the other end is connected to the other bore 3 through a second valve means 33, 35, which is substantially hydraulically sealed when the compensator piston is at the other end of the cylinder. The valve means preferably comprise needles 32 and 33 on both ends of the compensator piston, each of which co-operates with an orifice at the ends of the compensator cylinder to form a needle valve. It will be clear that in the event of breakage of a pipe connected to one end of the compensator cylinder, the piston therein will be moved by pressure at the other end to seal off the defective pipe.
