Abstract

An emulsifiable polymer is produced by oxidizing a high density ethylene homopolymer or copolymer with an alpha-olefin, said polymer having a density of 0.935 to 0.970 and a melting point of 115 DEG to 137 DEG C., the oxidation being in the solid phase at a temperature of at least 100 DEG C., but below the melting point of the polymer and carried out until the product contains 0.20 to 2.0 milliequivalents of carboxyl groups per gram and the ratio of the milliequivalents of carboxyl groups to the square root of the melt index of the oxidized polymer is above 0.008. Stable emulsions of the products may be obtained by vigorously mixing with an emulsifying agent and a base (which neutralizes the carboxyl groups). Conventional additives also may be present, e.g. phenolic or amine stabilizers.
