996,748. Measuring temperature electrically. BAILEY METER CO. May 16,1962, No. 18935/62. Heading G1N. A resistance thermometer comprises a tube 76 filled with a compressed insulating powder and containing electric conductors 84, 86, 88, 90, and a cylindrical ceramic insulator 80 provided with longitudinal bores 104, 106, 108, 110, of which two house helical resistance elements 44, 46 and two contain supporting wires 112, 114 which engage the ends of the insulator 80 and position it longitudinally relatively to a metal sheath 78, itself closed by a plug 102, packed with insulating powder and welded to the tube 76, which is swaged to reduce its diameter and so to compress the powder. Tube 78 is tapered and is biased into engagement with a thermometer pocket 52 by a spring 66 compressed by screwing a pipe 56 into the pocket 52 and head 59. The temperature-sensitive resistance wires 44, 46, connected in series, form one arm of an automatically balanced bridge circuit (Fig. 1, not shown.
